    Oh yeah, let me just sit here and avoid potential heart disease in 30 years while my intestines are bleeding NOW. In what world is this man living. Idk who Megan is or her background in veganism/reasons she went vegan, but she seems nice and like she is trying to keep the animal product intake as low as she can without harming herself while her health improves. I still can't get over the fact that his reaction to someone saying blood was pooling in their abdomen was "have you tried protein powder in pancakes and eating amaranth??"

      Megan is my favorite UA-camr in South Korea. Been watching her for 5 years. She is a very nice person who loved eating vegan and improving her health. She is always talking about health and showing vegan restaurants and dishes in South Korea. I feel like people who are saying bad things about this haven't watched any of her videos and don't care that she was in so much pain. This dude is talking out of his a##. Because there's literally not one medical entry which concludes that argument. In 60 years Si Ce that myth was introduced by certain companies who paid to advertise like they do, there's never been a study which backs that claim besides epidemiological papers which haha, if you believe epidemiogical findings... She clearly didn’t want to stop being vegan, but when your stomach is literally full of blood, I think you’re going to do whatever it takes to feel better. And she’s trying to still be as ethical as possible. It’s so rude for him to insinuate she’s not trying hard enough.

    Thanks for standing up for Megan...this dude seems totally tone deaf to her situation. At least she’s attempting to keep her animal consumption down. He should focus on people who are actually over-consuming and being irresponsible about their diet.
    He also clearly has no idea how food works in South Korea. Which is fine, but he shouldn’t be acting as if he knows what he’s talking about when he clearly doesn’t. Honestly it’s hard enough to be vegetarian here, let alone vegan. I’m actually amazed that she pulled it off at all. Turns out Im one of the people whos GI system HATES animal products luckily, but if roles were reversrd I would be horrified at people criticizing me for trying to stop my intestines bleeding!
      As someone whos struggled since birth with severe GI issues and has a feeding tube, I know how horrible GI issues are. It completely controls your life and ruins your relationship with food! Its really hurtful to hear people dismiss and judge people for doing what they need to do in regards to GI issues. Good point. We see patients pass on due to similar conditions. Note that this is an inflammatory condition and any allergy like this can become fatal. Furthermore, each time the intestines are becoming so inflamed that there is bleeding, an infection may result and lead to hospitalization. So many things are affected by our menstrual cycles! It can even affect immunogenicity, when we get a vaccine, where we are in our menstrual cycle. Unfortunately the vast majority of research has originally been done primarily on men, because of the possible risk of teratogenicity if a woman were to get pregnant during the course of the study.
      I've worked as a MRVS (medical research volunteer subject, "mervs") for years, but it's very hard to find women "guinea pigs" who are of childbearing age but who are also at zero risk of pregnancy (I'm asexual -- I don't want any sex, with anyone, anywhere, anytime, for any reason, ever.) So even nowadays, it's much harder for research studies to find enough women who want to sign up.

    I have endometriosis, which is one of the most painful conditions you can have (according to NHS research). When you eat food and it effects your body (with endo it can cause IBS like symptoms) you have to deal not only with the intense pain but also there is the mental health side of it. Chronic pain is a completely different ballgame and if you've never experienced it, it can be hard to understand how scary it is and how it effects your entire life. You start wondering about every single food you put in your mouth and if it will effect you. You don't know what is safe anymore for you, Esp when fruit and vegetables start effecting you, it's overwhelming because we're so often told they're "healthy" for you. It's not healthy for you if it makes you in immense pain.
    The way he dismisses her pain and implies heart disease is a bigger priority to mitigate is quite frankly disgusting and damaging. Chronic pain gets dismissed already by so many people, and it's a constant battle for people with it, every single day. I don't think he has any idea what people with chronic pain and chronic illness suffer from every single day, and all the elements they need to juggle to try and lower their symptoms to a liveable and manageable degree.

Nothing really helped her. I understand that it was a hard decision, but I think it was the right one for her. She really did not make this decision on a whim. It was hard for her. He clearly does not know how it works. Pea protein is bad for me. Lentils are terrible for my IBS. The dose is the poison for us. So you may be able to eat one small amount of one of them a day, but not enough to be able to get enough protein.

All mock meat is made with soy and a small percentage is made from flower. This guy has no idea what he is talking about. Even lentils are hard to find unless you are close enough to an Indian or Bangladeshi store (only in like Tokyo or Osaka), or buy them marked up on amazon. Thank you for continuing to talk about people with IBS with such compassion. I would love to be vegan if I could. I have a rather extreme case of IBS. If I hadn’t found a diet that worked for me I would have had to go on disability as I was unable to leave the house. Even the low FODMAP diet isn’t restrictive enough to control my symptoms. I have been careful with my diet for 7 years and I’m now able to replace some meat with eggs and whey protein. All vegan sources of protein need to be extremely limited or I will be in a lot of pain. I’ve tried to gradually go vegetarian or vegan and it has never gone well. Unless there is a major breakthrough in medication or probiotics or something I’ll have to wait until cultured meats are widely available in order to be vegan.
    Tips for aspiring vegans/vegans with IBS: find a diet that actually controls your symptoms for at least a few months before trying to reduce animal product consumption. Add foods back one by one and try to identify whether it’s the protein or carbohydrates in a given food that sets you off. Just don’t try to replace more than ten grams of animal protein with plant protein at a time. It might be that you end up like me, only able to eat a handful of vegan meals a month and five or so vegetarian meals per week. Something is better than nothing.

    I'm a first year medical student so I obviously don't know everything, but yeah... intestinal bleeding is way more serious and imminent problem than hypothetical heart disease in 30 years? Occult bleeds can cause serious anemia (which, where is Mic expecting her to get her iron without beans, soy, or wheat?) and if the bleed is left untreated can even lead to hypovolemic shock. I didn't watch her video but it seems like her bleed was maybe not so serious as to warrant an endoscope and could just be treated with diet (although she did say it could be serious if she had waited longer), but her continuing to eat legumes and aggravating her gut even more could lead to serious, acute complications. Really irresponsible of Mic.

    Im 30, been vegetarian since 14 and vegan for almost 10 years now.
    Ive always seen this im not vegan anymore videos and had Mic's and other vegan youtubers reaction. For the last 3 years Ive had random upset stomach episodes (pretty severe but they would pass in a couple of weeks). Until last year...... all of the sudden I havent been able to eat almost anything. Looked for help from vegan professionals (not easy to find well versed in the topic but im open to it) and seen several Drs and Gastros (which to be honest never asked WHAT I EAT!!!!! what if I ate big macs and ice cream everyday all day? ) Anyway.... its been a painful and a debilitating time... and scary with covid and all of it. Havent been able to work or leave the house on my own for one year because of the symptoms. I NEVER NEVER EVER EVER in my life thought I would go back to eating animals but at this point it seems to be my only option. My heart aches so much, as I said I havent had animal flesh in ove 15 years... animals are my favourite thing in the world. But what am i supposed to do? Spend another thousands of dollars I dont have and keep trying so many failed ways to try to get better? I spend all my days at home physically debilitated at this point and I havent turned 30 yet. I pray everyday that I dont have to do this forever. Im in mental anguish all the time about... I try as hard as I can to be an ethical and moral person in every aspect of my life and genuinely dont know how to deal with this. Not every ex vegan is fine what this decision... is beyond emotionally painful and distressing. Also once you are vegan and you have this mentality of 'animal products cause cancer and heart disease' the whole situation becomes even more distressing for the individuals. My mental health can obviously worsen the symptoms and being even MORE scared of getting another symptom or disease is scary and it doesnt help at all. Anyway... my point is... some people dont know what to try anymore and are not happy about eating animals they have loved and respected their whole lives.

      @scarlet8078 3 роки тому +5

      Friend, it is ok to eat the animal products for your own health & well-being. There are many people in your situation. We see such patients all the time, many with neuromuscular problems as a result of B-12 deficiencies from long-term veganism. We also see patients having digestive problems that appear to result from an overgrowth of bacteria in the intestines or sometimes from excessive fiber over a long timespan that seems to irritate the digestive tract in ways we don't fully understand.
      A vegan diet does not provide full nutrients without supplementation; therefore, all vegans become dependent on the pharmaceutical industry to meet their basic nutritional needs. Many others develop long-term health problems as a result of certain imbalances present in a vegan diet, e.g., the very high fiber content mentioned above. Still other people have bodies that do not absorb nutrients like iron and various vitamins from plant sources. We often see patients with diets that seem sufficient on paper, but the patient will have extreme deficiencies, be having muscle spasms, internal bleeding, etc.
      If your symptoms do not improve, you may find it helpful to go to a hospital that treats eating disorders. I realize you do not view your veganism as an eating disorder (& I'm not saying that it is - certainly some people can be healthy on a vegan diet). However, these facilities deal with many patients who have suffered results of restrictive diets and so we may be better able to diagnose issues related to a diet.

      Sorry about the other commenter here. I've been in a really similar situation for about the last year. I hope this doesn't seem rude, but have you considered reaching out to a mental health professional? Once my mental health started improving, my symptoms became more manageable, which, of course, won't be the same for everyone. But, either way it's nice to talk to someone about this stuff. I was also helped by joining some online support groups (not vegan-based, but based on certain diseases, syndromes, etc.). Because of COVID I have also really struggled to get adequate health care (and let's be real, this is a struggle outside of COVID times if you're in the US as well), and haven't gotten a diagnosis yet. But, it honestly helps to read and ask questions in forums of support groups for diagnoses that have similar symptoms as you. It seemed disingenuous to me at first, but there are a lot of people on there trying to figure out what diagnosis they have and I've never read anything that denounced anyone without a diagnosis for participating (and not like trolling or anything of course). Also, I'd be willing to chat if you ever want to vent (although I honestly can't think of a way to do so without putting my personal info on here-but I'll figure it out if you're interested!).

Also, when I'm flaring, while I can tolerate a 1/2 cup of canned lentils, I can't tolerate eating that at every meal or even every day. Whenever I see a vegan without IBS trying to make diet suggestions for someone with IBS, I always laugh. I'd love to see them try to eat a balanced diet on my restrictions for under $100 a month and keep it up for 30 or 60 days. Look, I'm not disputing the profoundly valuable moral aspect of veganism. But I wish vegans would more often admit that no, veganism will NOT work for everyone. No diet on the planet will work for anyone on the planet, veganism included. And ALL vegans keen on quoting research seem to conveniently gloss over the fact that the same research shows that yes, as bugging as it may be, plant proteins are usually less bioavailable and generally of a lesser quality (quality here referring to the representation of each amino acid in the source, not the sense we usually use the word for in common language), making sure hitting your targets, specially for athletes, is a bit trickier. Also, I wish they stopped invoking the seven plagues of Egypt because someone eats a couple eggs. It's fine, get over it (and woman are usually less prone to cardiovascular disease). If I as a 10 years+ vegetarian with extended stints of veganism can be put off by that, I imagine it's not really going to serve the cause with more convinced omnivores...
