Our new thumb release device is meant to make active retention a little easier to live with for some people, as some users found some difficulty with the other design of thumb release. We have revised our design to make actuating the thumb release lever a little easier, a little smoother.
If you wanted a bit smoother release for your Alien Gear retention holster, this is the thumb release that you've been looking for.
Our revised design makes for a smoother depression stroke. The detent inside the holster, which catches the trigger guard for the utmost in holster retention, withdraws smoothly and quickly with drastically less pressure being required to engage the release mechanism. This allows you to deactivate the active retention a little more quickly and draw your pistol.

Both thumb release styles will be available from Alien Gear Holsters, however, for the ShapeShift Modular Holster system. You can select which one you prefer, or both in case you like to have your options. Many customers find they prefer the previous release style, so you may find that you do as well.

My holster is arriving today. i havent seen it yet. this is the first holster ive bought. i hope its all its hyped up to be.. i contacted customer support to inquire about the thumb release. when i ordered mine i called and asked if this was all the bells and whistles included , and was assured i got all their latest gadgets.
Thank God!!! I got the shapeshift for my Shield when it was for preorder and it had the thumb release that was a small cut above hot garbage. Can't wait to give this a try!!!
Yeah, the previous design for the active retention button was absolutely awful; the only bad aspect about the ShapeShift holsters, honestly. I hope they'll allow previous customers to receive this part for free as part of the warranty. The old design was 100% useless and flexed while depressing so that it wouldn't properly disengage.
I was able to receive this part under a warranty exchange. The old design was simply not up to their quality standards and I'm happy to be able to use this function in the future.

Is the thumb release compatible with IWB holsters?
Really need to add new guns to the shape shift line up, be great to add a gun I actually have so I can buy a holster!

100% agree with this guy and I hope that your company can ramp up production on the more common concealed models sold. It seems kinda silly to prioritize an M9 over a Gen 5 G26 corrected shell, or a VP9SK shell, but -- what do I know? Maybe there are enough maniacs out there trying to IWB an M9? :|

How does the thumb release fit the appendix carry or IWB? it does not appear to have a place after the trigger guard is placed.

Do you have any videos and/or still shots of this retention being used IWB (not appendix)? It seems like it might be a bit "sticky" or "clunky" if riding against the body.

You'll notice that the addition of the passive retention unit adds no extra depth to the overall shell.
Please, please! make a new slid on clip for the appendix carry holster of the kit..I would deeply thank you.. allowing it to ride much lower is a great option for people with my body type.
The holster foe 3 o'clock rides (on its deepest setting hooks at top) about where the new clip should be IMO.. if you're reading this thank you for taking the time. I believe many men such as myself would purchase those clips, giving us yet more concealability with this already unique system..

I won the appendix holster and had the same problem with it riding too high. I ordered the belt slide clips to make it OWB and now its my #1 holster. It sits super tight to my hip & is more concealable. I can wear more of my normal shirts and dont have to wear Dickies work shirts.

I have the whole Shape Shifter kit..It tool me losing a few lbs before I could enjoy it like I do now.. if they had a clip for the appendix holder which would allow it to ride lower would be phenomenal.. I find myself using different appendix holsters that I do not prefer for comfort.. I would love to use the Alien Gear appendix holster if I could get it to ride lower.
I completely agree with you. They made the improved thumb release maybe they can do some more R&D on a better clip if more people requested it. I cant wear at appendix at all. I am a little heavier than i would like which makes it difficult but i also had major surgery (stomach cut open) that makes putting anything by my stomach impossible. Do you get jabbed in the thigh wearing appendix?
How do you remove it? I looked at mine. Not exactly sure how you unscrew it.
A little late, but maybe this will help someone. I actually came to this video to see if they explain it before I had an epiphany.
You have to separate the two parts of the shell using the twist locks, and on the internal side of the half with the thumb retention is the part that can be unscrewed with a hex key.
Yeah mine got some dust in it and it’s not operating smoothly anymore. I can’t figure out how to disassemble it
I'm still waiting for the ShapeShift kit for the S&W M&P 9mm 2.0. Any word when that will be released? Yall have it for the Sheild 2.0 and the 1.0

I bought my shapeshift a few weeks ago. Did it come with the new design or older design? The thumb release on mine feels a bit sticky.

Finally got the correct part sent to me as a warranty exchange (they accidentally mailed me an older button at first, hah). The new button - which now says 'EZ Draw' along the side - works so much better than the previous design. It's still a little wobbly for my preferences (the mechanism is too far away from the button to not be), and requires a bit too much downward force to release, in my opinion.
I compared the old design with my wife and she asked: _"Wow, is this one broken?"_ in regards to the old design, if that tells you anything. The new one is so much smoother, and if you trained enough with it, I could see it being okay.
That said, I would still recommend a holster dedicated towards that sort of paddle / OWB configuration if you're wearing it as a duty gun (something which works every single time with basically minimal 'training' in regards to how the mechanism needs to be manipulated to release), but it's nice to have options from a relatively affordable holster. If you wore your ShapeShift as a duty holster in the OWB configuration and just wished the button was better -- this one is better.
Personally, I'll likely be keeping my shells for my Alien Gear Holsters in IWB configurations (where I think their products stand alone -- especially for first-time CCW/CPL customers).
But again, shoutout to Alien Gear on their warranty. I couldn't be a happier customer and I think the 4.0 is an outstanding product. And as much as I love the 'value' of being able to easily reconfigure things (especially without many tools), I honestly wouldn't mind it if Alien Gear put out a sort of Safariland competitor that was a dedicated OWB holster done their way.

I agree with Jonathan. Love the concept but you don't make it for my new carry gun VP9-SK as a matter of fack you won't have the VP( until July is what I read.

what is the thumb release locking on to, is it the mag release switch and if so will that cause any harm to firearm also can this feature lock a Sig p320 compact in place. Cuz I saw a Video on youtube where it was not locking. Has this been addressed.
Hello Ryan, thank you for reaching out! Our thumb release latches onto the opposite half of the trigger guard that faces the holster without the adjustable retention unit. When you receive your shell, you will notice the trigger guard as part of the shell. The thumb release can connect to the opposite half of the trigger guard. I need a level 3 owb holster for my glock 27 for work by adding this feature to the holster would that makenit a level 3 or do you guys sell a owb level 3 holster ? Thanks

I called ang Allen gear DONT have one for my gun..I shot with my left and own a SAR 9X..can you substitute another finger holster for my gun ????..with the flashlight on the gun ... thank you .,....
I can’t get my thumb to work well with AIWB. It makes it interact with the body pad.
I just got my holster. I was very excited to open it and start using it until I've noticed that I cannot use my thumb release because the part that holds the holster to the padding doesn't fit over both peices. It will only fit if using the small trigger guard. Please tell me I'm doing something wrong. Cause if not then I will be sending mine back

If anyone purchases a shapeshift for the full size sig p320 m17 9mm, beware. I purchased one and the retention button is too short for a comfortable purchase on the pistol and easy release. Even after multiple replacements with their largest release, it’s still the same. I have to awkwardly move my hand deep into the left to reach and fully release the pistol from holster which makes for a bad draw and considerable readjustment of hold. After multiple replacements and and lots of time in the phone and chat, I was practically told that it’s a fault on my end and that all the shapeshift holsters use the same retention release button. But, it is way too short for a normal draw. After plenty of practice, I still get caught up and miss a quick fast draw due to the awkward angle I’m having to push in to draw. Love this company and their products but I think there needs to be a closer look to certain products for certain guns as this is an issue and my issue was not taken care of. I was just asked if I would like to return because there is no further help and that’s it’s basically my fault for improper use and that I do not how to properly use this system. So good luck. Hopefully it will be something that is fixed soon

Hello! The IWB ShapeShift 4.0 Holster doesn't come with a thumb release attachment. Technically, it can attach to the 4.0 holster it's going to be a little awkward because the 4.0 base gets in the way.
Is there a holster that fits the FN 509? I need one ASAP!
While we do have holsters for that firearm, it is not available for the ShapeShift yet. We're sorry for the inconvenience regrettably, we do not mold for that at this time. We do not have an exact time we can give for its release as the guns we mold for are contingent upon the volume of requests we receive for it. We do plan on increasing the size of that library as we move forward but it could be sometime before we mold to accommodate your firearm. We have added that to our "Gun Wish List" for you.
Does the thumb release attachment work with the 4.0 iwb hoster?
Yes it does, and it comes with every ShapeShift holster! Just unscrew it from the outside the waistband shell and attached it to the quarter shell covering the trigger guard on the back.
@@Aliengearholsters is there a video on this. I got the two outer and inner shell pieces together but cant lock it to the soft shell.
@@michaelallen3386 Just this one. Check on this video at 34 seconds. You can unscrew from the back full shell, and then screw it onto the smaller trigger guard cover that comes with the IWB holster. If that doesn't help, give our customer service team a call and they can walk you through it!

She said we will ship the right handed thumb break asap. Thanks for the great customer service and response. Definitely will recommend aliengear to fellow carriers.

This new thumb release is much easier to maneuver when it comes to using our Shapeshift configurations. Although both provide Level 2 retention, our original thumb release had a brief break in period where you would need to adjust to the muscle memory necessary to disengage the firearm. Does this work with the iwb holster?

Yes, this can work with the 4.0 and even Appendix carry holster. It attaches to the corresponding trigger guard to give you level two retention.
The connector lock doesn't fit over the holster with the thumb release on. If not for that it would work, but no, it does not attach properly because it increases the thickness where the connector lock is supposed hold the shell to the base.

Will this work with the owb slide?
Hello! The thumb release does work with the OWB Slide. However, it was designed for the full shell configuration. The base can get in the way of the thumb release when drawing the firearm. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

With the new EZ Thumb Release, the spring tolerance has been lowered. Customers will not have to push down on their firearm while depressing the Thumb Release. It will be slightly taller and have a wider thumb pad.

Well can’t be worse then old design. Old one I can’t even use because when installed my glock won’t even go into holster far enough to lock no matter how little retention I use.
Then if I convert to appendix or IEB I can’t get any retention at all. Not even with it turned all the way up.
Only good thing about the system is it’s comfortable to wear but does me no good without any retention.

@@Aliengearholsters thank you for the reply.I had one of your IWB holsters and It did not hold up.To be fair I carry every day and it is not uncommon for me to be on the ground while wearing it.I have since made changes in life where I think a shoulder rig would suit me better and live the Idea of positive retention and a thumb button.I will be trying this one out.

Will it fit a Sig p226?
Except it doesn't work with IWB or Appendix holster mounts...
The thumb release can actually be transferred and used with the majority of our ShapeShift Holsters, aside from the Pocket Carry and the OWB Belt Slide. Simply unscrew the thumb release from the other half of the shell and attach it to the inside of the trigger guard on the dominant hand half of the shell.

As for the Beretta 92FS shoulder holster, the thumb release is hot garbage. Too flexible and cannot get it to release the pistol.
AND, the thumb release can actually depress the mag release and cause the mag to fall out when drawing the weapon!!! Returned mine ASAP!
I found that out the hard way when I got mine, but at least you can remove it and use the passive retention knob. The holster itself is still awesome.
