  • Tales From My Spinner Rack! Episode 05 looks back on my favorite Silver Age Superman stories. In this sometimes-wonky era, edited by Mort Weisinger, Superman’s book-length “novels” took some surprising turns, including both good and evil doppelgängers, a brush with death due to a deadly virus, and the actual (but imaginary) death of Superman! All the stories are brilliantly illustrated by the Super-Artist Supreme, Curt Swan, and two of them are written by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel. It’s a fun, fact-filled foray into an era of Superman comics that totally sum up the character’s time in the Silver Age of Comics!

I'll always think of the 1938 Superman as the "real" Superman. But having grown up in the swinging '60s myself, I gotta say I think the Superman family stories from that time are some of the best kids' entertainment ever written. I still love to read those old stories.

Its a Wonder how so many great stories were produced during the 60s it kept going. Yet Batman sales fell down. Just think how Superman TV. Lasted in reruns.

In the UK American comics were seen as a `luxury` and not that easy to get. I did have a few `Superman` `Batman` and `JLA` when funds allowed (Spent most on UK weekly comics) Two Superman stories that I really enjoyed were (1) from about 1966 when he faced four humans turned into Elemental beings of `Earth` `Water` `Air` and `Fire`. Second, (In issue 209) was the story titled "The Clark Kent Monster" where a version of his own alter-ego threatened both Superman and the Earth.

During the 60s Superman was a hot item on Japan. Don't rember reading this story. Must have been in one of my tours in Vietnam. Mr.Swan was one the best people in DC.he helped to teach how to write comic scripts. And gave us Original Artwork at the 1964 Comicon.

This one is perfectly timed for me! The last few weeks I’ve been focusing on filling in my Silver Age Action Comics run (but I’m actually in the 10 cent era, so it’s the 50s; still…)

The 1960"s and Curt Swan drawn comics went hand in hand for my magical childhood. Throw in George Reeves, Worlds Finest, and the Legion of superheroes and my childhood was SUPER

I was always confused, even at a young age, by the Legion of Superheroes. Wouldn’t Braniac 5 already know the outcome of the Virus X story?

Would he, though? I mean would you really expect to find a note in a history book about the day Julius Caesar DIDN'T die?

The best story was when Superman was still a BABY on the planet Krypton. Since Krypton had a RED SUN at that time, the inhabitants did not have any superpowers at all, including of course the baby Kal-el. But then the villain Brainiac abducted the baby in order to ransom Jor-el. Brainiac brings the baby to his criminal hideout which turns out to be an asteroid that orbits a YELLOW SUN, so of course the baby gets Super-powers. Then the baby wreaks havoc on Brainiac's asteroid, although in an infantile way that babies would, which made it highly entertaining. Brainiac was so traumatized by the havoc that he brought the baby back to Krypton. lol

Actually I should have mentioned the issue where he was an Adult. But the reason why I posted the one where he was a Baby is because it included the planet Krypton. In other words, my favorites were the issues that centered on his alienness.
So my favorite where he was an Adult was the story "Three Nights in the Fortress of Solitude." Lois tries to prove that she can be a good wife to Superman by enduring three nights in the Fortress of solitude. But she never expected any of the bizarre things in the Fortress. Exceptional story.
