Vermona E2010 Graphic Equalizer - A Studio Secret from behind the Iron Curtain

- In which I explore the beauty of the filterbank that is the vintage Vermona E2010.
The not very well known Vermona E2010 has been a staple of my studio for years. Its a very moogy looking graphic equalizer built around an LC filterset, the likes of which you don't see anymore. It adds vibe to anything you run through it and allows for creative bending of any audio material. Here I show what it adds to synths, drums and a full mix.

...it was a great idea. But they are turning into die stasi!
I get the "joke", but do you really think 2 days will be enough for your patrons to get this rare beauty on the 2nd hand market? I was following a couple of markets for weeks to find one... & that was 5 years ago.
I used to day trade stocks over 10 years ago... before the terminators co-located at the exchange. We used to watch Jim Cramer Mad Money on CNBC and buy whatever he said seconds after he mentioned it while the slow traders were still logging in. It was good for about 1/4% avg ROI per day. Sometime you'd get burned and there was never all that much volume to it. I miss those days.
@@dachanist HAINBACH is my Jim Cramer :-) So if any one wants my Vermona EQ, hit me up.
s33k3r3000 Im interested :)
RIP second hand prices, why is it that I always need more gear after seeing your videos. I just can't unerstand how you make me want gear I didn't know I needed in my life. Thank you for that, amazing stuff.

I had just assumed Vermona was some new boutique company that made cute synths. I learned something!
All from Klingenthal, Same as Goldon, whom I covered in a my toy piano video.
Telekom Electronic Beats visited the Vermona factory a year ago. Their video is worth checking out!
ua-cam.com/video/fFwEy4ilMdI/v-deo.html
This Equalizer has change my Live! It was a dirty Present from a "Proberaumkeller". Now looks like new! I used them to equalized my Streichfett.
I am so happy, that my dad bought one back then, keep it in good condition and gave it to me a few years ago. That EQ is incredible.
I was very Lucky to get one of these for 12 Euro on a flewmarket. Also in very good condition, because it was owned by the gdr statesecurity and checked every few years. Thanks alot for the video, till today it was just an EQ for my vintage hifi , now ill definitly bring it back to my Studio to warmup some digital tracks made with caustic in my phone! 🍹
RIP second hand prices. I have a VERMONA synthesiser (which I know very little about except it was made around 1980, the key bed is a little knacked up, but it sounds great), so I immediately pricked up my ears when I heard that HAINBACH was doing a video about a product from the same company at around about the same time of production. As always, great video HAINBACH. I love these old bits of gear. They don’t make them like they used too!

Coils for filtering? That’s fascinatingly old school. Gives a really interesting coloured sound too. I may have to investigate a diy alternative
If you do please share!
HAINBACH Yes I will! I know how to make filters by calculating an rc constant but I’m sure I’ve read a similar calculation for coils so I’ll have to investigate
@@ChrisLodyMusic Here's the schematic. just request it and they'll email it to you. www.radiomuseum.org/r/klingentha_vermona_graphic_equalize_2.html?language_id=2
@@Mechotronic thanks so much!
@@Mechotronic I don;t suppose you'll ever see this... Any ideas on the value of the inductors?

I could hear that change through my phone with the pocket operator fantastic!
Wow! I thought that I was the only one who made such a discovery))) passive equalizer on Lc filters. I experimented with inductors and got different filtering effects and one even better method, but I don’t want to talk about it, because this is my professional discovery, I can only share it with a musical equipment manufacturing company by signing a contract with them)))
as an multi bandpass filter and shaper. yeah thank you learned something new
Super, that is good to hear!
the loop starting at 13:29 is killer! and the vermona eq sounds fantastic!
OMG! That equlilizer is so dynamic!
Want one now . no idea - thought an EQ was just an EQ . THANKS AGAIN for the enlightenment
When hooking up the Roland TR-606 all I could do was just hum the guitar line to Big Black's Steelworker as it reminded me of that. The Vermona sure gives a nice muted texture to the sound even at its extremes. For €60, it was a steal.
The outro jam is so good. Looks like a fun and useful unit!
The way it transforms the 606... Oh my!
I had this a while ago. Had to sell a bunch of stuff and this went. Have wished several times since that I'd kept it. It was great.
After this vid price increases for around 300-350€ in Germany Bought one for 30€ many years ago still doesn't use it at all, packed in a box!! Sound is AMAZING
Nothing can beat the vintage hardware
Loved the end! I'm ready for your new minimal techno project Mr. Scratchy Pots.
Ah so good! I love that name.
Definitely way cheaper than any Moog modular 907A or 914 filter bank!!! And absolutely amazing with a digital signal like the PO one!
This sounds great. I found an old schematic online, in German of course. Not a lot of text, so that's not a problem. I have no idea if I could pull off a DIY 120 VAC build, I'm rusty with electronics.
Lovely to learn about this piece of equipment, thank you.
You are welcome!
capacitators :)
Yeah, Kondensator is the German word, that is why I mixed the two.
@@Hainbach those are simply Capacitors that enjoy kartofler!
Love Kondensator!!
@@Hainbach hey you know more languages than most of your USA fans at least, I wish I could have a 999/1000 correct rate on any other language :)
@@Hainbach Also coils pass lf, and caps pass hf. For example with a coil (actualy 200ohm winding of a little transformer) and parallel to dc input cap (= LC low-pass filter) I filtered out computer noise from usb power (dc is 0 hz) to supply fuzz pedal from usb without noise.
Recently got a Vermona Retroverb Lancet and it's a real good investment.
you: as you can CLEARLY, this white nosie already sounds a lot diffrent
youtube: cut at 10khz xd
me: uhhh
Damn. :-(
@@Hainbach it might be more audible if you were to use a sinewave per band. Listening with my laptop speakers I could only hear a difference on the first slider and then I could only hear a difference when every second slider was raised
TWO Quadraverbs because they are awesome.
Magical EQ!
THE HAINBACH HAS SPOKEN.
I wonder about using guitar pedals for line level sound. Is it better to step it down with a re-amp pedal? Then either step it back up to line level. Would you use an active DI for that? Or plug it straight into a hi-impedance input on a desk?
Beautiful knowledge. Thank you Sir
Have one because of u. ♥️
My dad has a Vermona Regent power amp/mixer. I think he still has it. It has the same scratchy sound problem with the faders haha. :D
Pretty inspiring !
But as the Vermona EQ is not below 200 € , wouldn't it be possible to do this with different EQ's as well?
AUDIOTHING BABY!!!!
Ok man, I got it. Your filter kicks asses, that's what it is :-)
hej hainbach, don't know if you're stumbling through your old works here, but I can't figure out how u patched it up. could you explain it please a little further? thank u!
Keep up the good work
I like how sometimes it adds a click sound to into the already existing sound. Peaking on certain frequencies? Old capacitators ?
hi , very interesting video , any idea of the Q factor for each band ? i'm interesting in making a ableton rack emulating this , thanks
I would like to try this Vermona E2010 mixer with my Vermona '14 and Vermona perFOURmer. @Hainback, great video!
Hi Hainbach! love your videos.
How come the white noise isn't flat on your EQ on your laptop? Isn't that the definition of white noise?
Thanks for all the great content!
Bought mine for 2€ on flea market ;) great piece of gear
That's a nice find
5:00 so relaxing af. RIP, and I mean RIP! Secondhand prices
AWESOME!
Interesting phase issues in the 8kHz and 16kHz bands. Sounds very cool.
Agree, especially on the hihats!
ASMR to the max
Ah, what a sexy beast of machinery!
Haha! I'm glad i bought 3 of them before this video :).
So now I wonder it sounds if you chain them all.
@@Hainbach I'll stay in touch then!
Please do!
Nice work
Thanks! Loved this eq since ages.
Good tune!
Love the sound of this EQ. Have you ever tried comparing it to an API 560? They both share the same frequencies, though the API predates the Vermona by a number of years. :) I use my API all the time for sound design and tone shaping, but would love to get my hands on this Vermona! Thanks for making these amazing videos and sharing them with us friend. You rock.
I love the API, it's one of the things I hope to have in my still rsthe empty lunchbox one day.
The rabbit is out of the hat now!
It was time I put it through its paces - the white noise test clarifies what I was hearing all the time when I was using it. White noise everything!
I have been trying to find one of these in the states for the past couple years with no luck, or at least in decent shape while maintaining all of my organs.
Yeah, in Germany you find them often in classifieds and locally. I feel east Germans have a healthy distrust of eBay, so you find stuff rarely there.
ever considered using a ruler to neutral your EQ?
Hardcover book - my wife does not like if I take and of course misplace her ruler.
@@Hainbach LOL :P
love it and still trying to buy one! :(
Nice, that you are here.
Did not work out? Sorry to hear!
I wonder what it would sound like if you add in for example bass on the first band and subtract it with the second - pultec style? :)
Its nicer two bands apart 😃
🐐
You obviously know about the hardware as you were working with it yourself as you mentioned, but I always wondered how much interesting gear you could pick up from yard sales (or the obvious modern choice, „eBay Kleinanzeigen“). Any useful tips, or something where I can get started? Is it more „trial and error“ or extensive research before you go into buying stuff like this?
I used to be very active in forums, lots of info there. Also, talking to fellow music makers. Then, trial and error.
is it just me or does the right side sound different from the left?
This thing has a great Stereo Image... it's not particularly wider in my ATH M50x. But it feels heavier, more dense... & this may sound odd, but it also sounds lower :P
Not quieter... but rather lower altitude-wise.
Need some Deoxit though :P ( as you later mentioned )
You are hearing the same thing as I do! It becomes more real. The digital mix of "The Heat" felt like it was in my head, but mastering through the Vermona it came close to me. More of a gut feeling.
@@Hainbach Win√
I already have one but I'm looking for a second for more craziness :)
You absolute madlad! There is another viewer here who has three.
You should team up for 70db filters!
3:20 how exactly are you routing the cables? I didnt quite understand :/
Signal to input L, Output L to Input R, Output R to Mixer

Hey! What's the name of that mixing console on your desk?
Hallo and thanks for the videos, just a little nerdy question on the side: what is this compact blue mixing console please?
Alan & Heath Mixwizard 14:4:2
Danke sehr :)
I wonder how this would compare with the Moog 10 band eq.
Hmm, I've always disliked graphic EQs because I think of those little 5 band mackie ones, or the 31-channel rackmount units with the mini micro faders, but this one actually looks fun to play!
Check Out the API one, that is another beautiful graphic eq
Cool! But I'm curious: If it was only supposed to be for the East German market, why is the labelling in English?
A lot of East German gear was also planned for export, as East Germany needed money badly, but it rarely ever made the cut. From what I read, even in East Germany musicians wanted Western gear. So these stayed mostly in Warsaw pact countries. Similar to Tesla Tape recorders.
@@Hainbach Ah, makes sense, thanks! I like that the logo is still the same, too!
Did it have that much saturation when it was used in a PA or are you just running it really hot?
Running it chained, so its much more extreme. In stereo it can do subtle well.
It makes it sound really... chewy? Kinda lo-fi but bright. Iunno. It's cool :)
I love your blue mixer. Name?
Alan & Heath Mixwizard 14.4.2.
I need to rewatch this with headphones. My mobile phone speaker doesn't cut it.
Or does it?
Probably not. :-)
Nice vid, I have learned something....ow , it's called a capacitor not a capacitator haha.
Don't worry my deutsch sucks too....
Why not take it apart and show us the inside m
Just shows how ingenious Germany is
Oh mein Gott ein echter VEB wie war denn der EVP ?
650 Ostmark!
why did they paint english words on this East German EQ?
LC network coils BLOCK or more accurately, impede hi-HZ. the inverse holds true for caps.
Export hopes.
Stuff by Vermona such as keyboards, amplifiers, guitars etc. looked just amazing comparing to the total crap made in the USSR at that time. I played Vermona Formation 1 electric organ.
Auratone 5C speaker(s) 👍
Sounds Mono or am I Crazy or is this case? Mainly Lack of Hard Separation.
Because I am running left into right to be able to filter more extremly. I describe that in the beginning.
@@Hainbach Thank You, Foolish me.
Hardware ist immer mehr Spass
I wonder what your electric bill is like. Hell, you have to have some industrial grade circuit breakers everywhere.
Ah, the water heater and the fan suck much more power than a rack. Not to mention the dishwasher.
you should have someone make a vst out of this
Hainbach Filters? Might be a good idea

Deoxit! Clean those pots!
Yes! Repair days have been delayed until May.
This is kinda like people giving away what records to sample to get the Nice drums and snares and etc . I feel you Should dig for these gems yourself . I bought this eq when i had no money at all for like 100 euro’s then i found out it was amazing . I think that is the joy of discovering gear like this .
What do you think ?
I don't like secrets in music. Secrets are no way to advance anything. That is why I share my techniques and gear I love openly. Knowledge needs spreading, else everything gets stuck.
I am personally grateful for anyone sharing knowledge - I only found this eq via post on muffwiggler five years ago, where someone wrote about how cool it was.
I think there's a fundamental difference between sharing music production techniques with one another and showcasing how equipment works, and then telling people exactly what they should be using for samples. Even then it's not about what you have, but how you use it.
I love Hainbach's stuff because whilst I don't really make all that much electronic music I still find it inspiring. He's actually the reason I finally took a plunge on some reel to reel tape machines, purely for making tape loops with.
Ok i understand what you guys are saying
