Question - did you notice a problem when shooting in higher ISO, as some people experienced? Just like here : ua-cam.com/video/-X9cui785Jw/v-deo.html
No, it seems to be JPEG issue, it doesn't happen with RAWs as you can see in the ISO testing section.
nice to see you back with lumix stuff. and nice to see lumix adding some really attractive stuff to their linup
Great to see Panasonic recognizing your status among reviewers by bringing you in for this camera.
Yes, it is nice that they have also invited some smaller channels.
@@TheHybridShooter I think Panasonic marketing can see that even though you don't have the followers of the really big UA-camrs, you are a serious reviewer with a loyal following. People pay attention to your reviews.
Bro - I asked you if I should pull the trigger on the s5 a little while back and you told me to wait a little bit. Now I know why! So glad I waited, got my s5ii preordered. Thank you so much!
My pleasure!
I was going to hold on on potential Z8 release, but that will be quite a bit more $$$. This looks like the option to update my G9!
@Clickumentary had the g9 Def miss it. But this will be a big upgrade.
Panasonic finally did it. 👏
They should have released phase detect with gh5 and it would have kept micro 4/3 alive
Delighted to see you reviewing it early and you’re the first review I watched. Great job and and camera looks amazing :)
Thank you!
Looks like a great camera. Looking forward to phase detect in the next GH camera now, I’ll probably move to it.
That is not guaranteed, considering that the GH6 doesn’t have Sony sensor.
@@TheHybridShooter owww man 😭
I was wondering about that and one hypothesis could be that the first LUMIX MFT camera to have PDAF might be a replacement for the G9 with a different sensor, perhaps that used by the OM1. Thoughts?
Although I note that the S5II uses essentially the same sensor as the S5 so presumably they can create PDAF and non-PDAF versions of a sensor (esp if it is a Sony sensor)?
Very nice review, thanks!
How do you compare it to Sony A7IV or A7C in terms of video eye AF?
Thank you!
There will be a video about that available very soon.
Was waiting for your review. Glad they invited you out to Japan :)
Whole UA-cam industry has to find new points in their videos because of the phase detection AF :D . Great to have it!
Finally they did it 🎉
Panasonic with auto focus!? It is over, Panaboy has the high ground! This is the first camera I've seen release that does not have a major drawback for me.
Casey needs a quarter in the jar every time I see someone dropping *Panyboy* 😅
Phase detect! This is the one thing that stifled Panasonic from competing with Sony And Canon for video. I feel like they were ahead of everyone with 4K 60, no record limits, 10-bit video, & industry-leading IBIS with the GH5. And after taking so long to finally change, they’re now playing catch-up. But I think they are the leaders in video innovation and have an opportunity to really compete again.
Yeah, they will have to pick up the pace, and introduce more products, but it is a good starting position.
@@TheHybridShooter For sure!
If they crack the code with ibis and internal nd filters...the S1hii could be the greatest camera under $5000 ever made!!
@@TheHybridShooter Hopefully the S5ii sells well enough it will enable them to invest more into the system and bring out either innovative cameras or at least parody Sony's best offerings. The SH2 could compete with the A7Siii (and the A7Siv when ever that releases) They can make a higher res S2r for the photo side and then start working on this new form of small cine camera with a competitor to the FX3, or even a new take on a small cine camera, similar to a c70, full frame with mini xlr inputs built in and also compatibility with the xlr adaptor if one cant be bothered mucking around with the adaptors but better ergos and without a flip screen the breaks from regular use... or something along those lines. Lumix is in a situation where they really could just start releasing competitive cameras, with class leading video features and very nice photo abilities they some of the best in the industry.
@@jockslifeatliftvideoproduc8528 I'm afraid that it is the other way around, Panasonic has to invest a lot into Lumix S line first if they want to gain market share.
What was it like going to Japan with all the other camera UA-camrs from all over the world? Did you get to chat or hang out with anyone like Jordan Drake, Chris Nicholls, Gordon Laing, Julia Trotti, Richard Wong, or anyone else?
Thanks for the fantastic review as always
My pleasure! It was a great event overall. I didn't recognize most of the people there, I don't watch UA-cam that much to be honest. I briefly spoke with Chris in the elevator and with Richard Wong during the event :)
@@TheHybridShooter That is so cool! I'm happy that you got to be part of that VIP experience, you certainly deserve it after all the hard work on your channel. 👍
Thank you!
Boze moj ! Lumix has finally done it ! PDAF ! Thanks for your comprehensive and extensive video, as usual !
My pleasure, thank you for watching!
Awesome review! This is an exciting camera.
Couple of questions:
1. On the S5, when you zoom into a photo during preview mode, it shows a low res JPG, so you can't really tell if the eye is in focus correctly. Does the S5-II still preview images like this?
2. For stills, when importing onto the computer and checking for focus, does the camera front focus on eye lashes, eye brows or glasses rims? DPreview is reporting that the S-II still has this issue, and Tony Northup is showing the same result in their Portrait tests. I returned my S5 because of this. As a glasses wearer yourself, it would be awesome to hear your input.
Thank you!
Thank you!
1. It looks fine on the S5 II, but I don't remember what it was like on the first S5.
2. S5 II has an option to fine-tune front / back focus for each lens in the menu, so even if it does that, you can fix it.
@@TheHybridShooter Thanks so much! 😁
@@TheHybridShooter thanks for this update!
Thanks for the review. Wonder how this compares to the new Fuji XH-2.
Great review! 4:41 was cool in that it found your face even before it was in focus, well done Panasonic! I am now just about ready to switch from Canon EF!
Great to see Panasonic competitive again
Fantastic review! Think this will be my next camera, but want to ask you, what camera is being held at the 14:19 mark?
Thank you! That is S1H
Super video, diky moc. Muzu se zeptat, ma to crop na 4k50 u S5IIx kdyz natacim na ssd?
Ďakujem. Áno, 4K 50/60p bude s orezom aj tak.
@@TheHybridShooter asi tendle jeden neduh zkousnu.... Zapada mi to rady GH5, S5 a ted S5IIx, tak az bude ke koupi vemu :) rad koukam na tvoje videa, jsou dobre zpravovane a detailni :)
Great review! How do you feel it compares to the X-H2 or the X-H2S? I was planning on buying a Fujifilm, but this Panasonic is really enticing me...
Thank you! The answer requires 20 min. long video, it will be available in about 2 weeks.
@@TheHybridShooter That's awesome! Really looking forward to it 🥳thank you for all your videos!
Hello, is it true that phase detection af does not work in 1080p 50 fps? It reverts back to contrast based af?
Ahah! I knew you wouldn't be able to resist the 16-35 forever.
Very keen to get the X since the Foveon is still a couple of years away.
Always enjoy your reviews the most. No bs just straight to the facts.
Thank you, I appreciate it!
I really wish they would have included the tilting/rotating screen from the GH6
I absolutely agree!
Do you think Panasonic will give this new phase detect autofocus to the Panasonic S1, Panasonic Gh5s, Panasonic Gh5 Mark 2, Panasonic Gh6, Panasonic S5, and Panasonic S1H and Panasonic G9 and Gx95
This is a hardware system. As far as I know those sensors were contrast based not phase detect.
One theory says that the S1 has PDAF but it is disabled. That is very unlikely though.
@@TheHybridShooter That S1 had a magical sensor. Too bad my gimbal would cry when I went I did walk and talk projects. I wouldn’t be surprised though that camera had so many pro features.
S1 basically used pretty much stock IMX410 from A7 III. I would be surprised, because having PDAF pixels actually causes some issues, so having them and not using them would be a cheap way to do it.
I'm really considering jumping from m4/3 to ff for this camera!
Can't blame you :)
Thanks for the review mate. I would really appreciate your input on its anomorphic capabilities if you could - in body desqueeze, etc... as well as your honest view on comparing it to Sony FX30 or A7R IV. Cheers
Unfortunately, I don't have any anamorphic lenses that I could you with this S5 II, so I am not able to do that. I will make a comparison with A7 IV, that is the closest match.
@@TheHybridShooter Please compare photo IQ, photo color rendering and photo dynamic range in the comparison! Maybe even throw in a Nikon Z 6 mark 2 or Nikon Z 7 Mark 2 for Sony has 33MP.
What are your experience with the 20-60 Kit lens?
Generally positive, optically decent, very versatile.
As always bro fantastic review :) I'm might wait till they bring something out with 120fps without a crop :) I'm so excited about this new AF system :)
I own 3 original S5s and I love my cameras. I think I'll get an S5II
From your perspective is the AF on this better than XT4?
Yes.
@@TheHybridShooter for video or photo?
Both.
@@TheHybridShooter thanks a lot!
@@TheHybridShooter thnx!
I don't understand, why 4K60fps needs a crop here.
Panasonic already did it without crop 5 (!) years ago in the GH5.
Are those few more MP (24.2 vs 20.3) really making it so hard to process?
GH5 only has 12-bit output and it processes much less data, which allows it to have faster read-out.
@@TheHybridShooter Ah, ok.
That might be another reason.
Have you tested it with the mc21 and sigma 18-35? I mostly shoot event videos and use that lens with my gh5. I’m curious how the AF works with this adapted lens.
No, I haven't. I would definitely recommend getting full frame lens instead of using a crop lens more than necessary.
@@TheHybridShooter I use 4k 60p a lot (70-80% of the time)… that’s my reasoning for my question… also at 35mm that lens just about covers the entire full frame circle. Standard full frame focal lengths just don’t make that much sense for me in particular. I might get my hand on this camera at the end of the month… till then… I just hope this camera-lens combo will work somewhat
That is a tricky topic, I'm not sure whether I would generally recommend this or other camera with cropped 4K 60p to mainly use it for 4K 60p, since you can't really use the full potential of the S5 II that way.
Should we get this one or wait for the X version? Is the all I format worth it? I don’t think I can wait until May.
I can’t give you a general answer to that. X offers a lot more than just ALL-I, so it depends on whether you need it.
Hopefully Panasonic won't forget to equip their future m43 products with the same AF system. 🙂
great review like always.. BEST 👏👏👏
Thank you!
Due to the openings from the fan(s). Is the camera still weather sealed?
Yes
@@TheHybridShooter it looks like water or debris are able to go inside easily.
@@Marty_McFatty The air tunnel isn't exposed to any electronics, it's a hollow internal heatsink
@@Vinterloft makes sense thank you for explaining that.
Would you recommend the 5ii or the X?
Depends on whether you need the extra video features of the X.
@@TheHybridShooter I’m worried about the long GOP codec and whether it’s ok for editing. I doubt ill ise prores or all intra or any raw… just need your opinion on long Gop please?
It is completely fine.
I’m so happy to see another competitor with a solid offering! So many great camera systems to chose from!
If Nikon, Canon and Fujifilm shared their lens mount protocols, it would level the playing fields and would make it easier to choose a body and a set of lenses that suited the consumer and their budgets better!
13:03 From what I remember on my S5 mk1, you can change the newer Q menu to the full screen approach in the q menu customization settings.
Yes, you can, now I realize that it sounds like the new one is the only option.
Actually no, you can't have the old Q menu on S5 II. You can have the old layout but only with black background. You can't have full screen preview with overlay.
@@TheHybridShooter crud. That sucks. Sounds like an easy fix via firmware
That seems to be their decision, not a bug, so I don't think that it will be fixed.
@@TheHybridShooter that’s unfortunate but for the autofocus fixes it is effectively not an issue
Riadna pecka že si bol v Japonsku :)
Áno, teším sa, že ma zobrali :)
These are going to sell like hotcakes!
Lets hope they bring this AF system to m43!
I hope so, but the chances are not great, considering that the GH6 doesn’t have Sony sensor.
Will you review sony a7R 5?
Yes, I will at some point.
Can you record to external SSD on S5ii like you can on the GH6?
Only with S5 II X.
@@TheHybridShooter GH6 does it
I know.
Excellent review. The colours are stunning.
Thank you!
Thank you 🙏 you went to Japan ?
My pleasure! Yes, I was there.
@@TheHybridShooter Ahoj z ČR, I´m so happy for you! I´ve been following your journey almost from the start... and now you are in the premium club in Tokyo 👍 Well deserved, congrats!
Ahoj zo SR! Thank you, I appreciate it!
Crazy to see that from a panasonic camera just wow
can it output video to ssd like ghh6?
Only the S5 II X.
Seems very good. However, various reviews notice some breathing on it still and also face exposure in low light/ backlit is poor. Hopefully can all be refined in firmware.
Breathing is a matter of lenses. If you use matrix metering, it doesn’t take faces into account, so that is a bit weird complaint, there is what the exposure comparison is for.
@@TheHybridShooter As I understand it, with face detection on it is under exposing faces compared to other cameras (side by side) and indeed other Panasonic cameras according to a couple of well known reviewers. I can see this in the footage they post.
Hi! What a great video! I have one question. What is the price of this camera? And what is the price of M2X?😅
Thank you! Depends on the region.
@@TheHybridShooter In Slovakia😅.
@@adamhoranic I think 2200 and 2500.
What a great option, sooo unlucky, that he doesn't have 4k 60fps uncrop😔. Will you do comparison to Sony fx30?😅
No, I will make A7 IV comparison, that is a closer match.
I stayed loyal and you did right by me Panny. Thank you
Now may they do the same for their m43 line. A g10, gx10 and lx100-3.
Won’t happen.
@@izmargad I wish they would for you friend but unfortunately it seems theyve moved on
I watched a Richard Wong video were he showed the rear screen of the A74 R6II and S5II in daylight the Panasonic screen was much brighter especially than the A74, good news if you need to work outside
Were all set to max brightness?
@@TheHybridShooter yes - he had them on a bracket - you could barely see the A74 screen
S5 II display is brighter, but the A7 IV is still completely fine even in direct sunlight, as long as you use sunny weather setting.
@@TheHybridShooter sunny weather setting is what he had it on, he made the comment because I think others had missed the screen has had a brightness bump.
Yes, Sony should make that default, other settings are quite useless.
Average Linux User, is that you :D? Nice review, man 👍
Thank you! No, I use Windows and Mac 🙂
Is the mark II using the same lens that the S5 uses?
yes
Wait, S5 II 4K 60p still uses the new Phase Detect AF correct?
The camera is MUCH MUCH faster using AF-S in situations like in 5:09 . The funny thing is in AF-S I think it uses only DFD. So if you don't need to track something and want quick snap use AF-S! In this camera it's like day and night in terms of speed.
I have just tried it and it makes NO DIFFERENCE whatsoever (with Panasonic lenses).
@@TheHybridShooter I can confirm this behavior using S50 1.8. Now I've tested 20-60 and there is no difference as you say. I have no other lenses to test with.
It makes a difference with Sigma, that is correct.
Are you talking about sigma lenses?
This makes Panasonic a viable alternative to Sony, Canon and Nikon!
The lens mount has a lot of potential, Panasonic has a lot of experience and expertise to bring in. We only needed them to make the full frame bodies with competitive AF system! Now they’re in the game! Welcome!
Fuji or Lumix?
Depends...
Finally!
👏👏👏
cause of no low pass filter, i can see Muaré on TV screen.
If you mean that sample with large screen, that is not very representative, even cameras with low pass filter show moire on screens.
Urob prosim ta video turu Blavou, z Lamaca az na Zlate ,centrum mesta .to by bolo skvele..

better value tahb fuji xh2 if u ask me . thnx!
Very different packages with different advantages. Both offer great value.
@@TheHybridShooter shure I really agree but otherwise I think tracking is better than fuji ( af in video). And fan is really smart implementation for panny, is there a huge diffrence in viewfinder? or do u think af in photo would be updated or is ti lenses taht are optimized for contrast based af?? thnx!
I will probably make a comparison video later this month.
@@TheHybridShooter that would be hefplfull with your really non biased reviews!
@@TheHybridShooter fuji xh2s agains panasonic would be great!

So do I. APS-C is the same thing.
