Luffy was also trying to be nonchalant about the Merry so Usopp wouldn't feel guilty about losing the money. He was acting like it was no big deal, so he wouldn't pile onto Usopp's troubles. The reaction wasn't what he was expecting though, because he never saw Usopp in the way Usopp saw himself(useless, weak, etc)

235 is the episode that took OP from a 9/10 show to an all-time great for me. We've spent so long with the crew at this point, with Oda slowly building that relationship, that when they break apart it has an emotional impact that goes beyond any other show. It feels like your own family breaking up.

When they landed in Drum Kingdom and were asking for a doctor to help treat Nami, Vivi got shot and Luffy got mad. Vivi stopped him and told him that : "he is a failure as a Captain. Acting rashly will solve nothing."
Luffy was insisting the shipwrights to fix the unfixable Merry but Iceberg told him: "and you call yourself a ship's Captain?"
Luffy learned what a Captain should act in their journey and Iceberg reminded him that.
Luffy was thinking about the safety of the crew and tried not to hurt Usopp's feelings, but yeah he said something idiotic and hurtful in the heat of the moment which he later apologized for.
While Usopp's emotion, insecurities, immaturity, etc got the better of him. It clouded his mind, didn't want to accept the truth, acted irrational and was not thinking about the safety of the crew. No matter how Luffy relay his decision to abandon the Merry and move on to him, he'd still act the same way. He assumed Luffy gave up on Merry so easily and said so many things to him. Luffy told him he's not the only one who feels pain over it, but Usopp still denied Luffy's feelings towards Merry.

Its not just about pride in this fight.
Luffy here must act like captain to make sure the journey is safe for everyone, since going mary cannot be repaired.
But in the other side, ussop take it on personal because he think he has no contribution for the crew except the ship. So when luffy decide to change the ship, ussop thinking that luffy someday will replace him too.

Luffy versus Usopp is a complicated situation. And it reminds me of how young all the Straw Hats are; they've all been through a lot, but they're still inexperienced in a lot of ways, including Luffy when it comes to being a captain.
And sometimes, there are situations with no good resolutions. Usopp was going to take the news about the Going Merry badly, no matter what; while Luffy's choice of words and reaction didn't help, I'm not sure there was anything he could have said or did to make things right in that moment, not with Luffy's own emotions running as high as they were.
Our protagonists are flawed, and sometimes those flaws lead to situations like this.

I think it's normal to empathise more with the emotional party, especially with someone like Usopp who laid his insecurities out open. However, it's obvious Luffy himself was putting on a facade as well, it was a tough decision for him but after seeing the consequences of Usopp with the Franky crew he realised that his crew's safety should be prioritised first, which is why he chose to let Merry go as captain's decision. Albeit his delivery could be worked on, but I like to think it's his first few times too stepping up as a leader.

Luffy and Ussop are same age. it is to show that they both are not matured enough.
-Luffy is still not that mature a captain, and yet to learn a lot about handling situations, having conversations, ... etc. (and he is learning by dealing various situations, like Vivi taught him in Drum Kingdom)
-Ussop kind of lost his focus; what's most important to him? -the journey? -his friends? -the ship?
... ... they both let their emotions take over ....
on contrary, Sanji and Zoro understood the circumstances better and quicker, and kept their composure

  • @tintedpalette653
    @tintedpalette653 4 місяці тому +5

What’s sad about the fight is that both Luffy and Usopp were underestimating each other’s emotional baggage with the situation. Luffy thought Usopp’s problem was feeling bad about losing the money, when in actuality it was about losing a crewmate in the Merry and the perceived threat of being the next crewmate to be abandoned. Usopp thought Luffy was not valuing the Merry and is a captain who would throw away the weak links of the crew, when in reality Luffy was doing what he thought would keep the crew in lighter spirits after such a loss.
Usopp’s reaction is easier to understand when you look at it from his perspective. He already feels like a liability from day one he joins the crew, and after just losing all that money cause he couldn’t defend himself, he is watching his captain (seemingly) nonchalant attitude in getting rid of the Merry once its a liability to the group. Usopp sees the Merry on the same level as the human crewmates, so this sequence of events no doubt worsened his insecurities while also making him disillusioned with Luffy. His insecurities and disappointment overwhelmed his usual rational head and he went to the point of no return. Though while it was reckless, it is an impressive feat to stand up to Luffy despite knowing what his captain is capable of. It showcases the consistent trait of Usopp’s, which is his outstanding courage when he is compelled into action.
Luffy on the other hand, who is usually an emotionally intelligent character, can’t see what’s happening with Usopp internally because Luffy has never seen Usopp as a liability or burden. Usopp is a valued crew member and it probably never even crossed Luffy’s mind that Usopp or any crewmate would be on the chopping block if they didn’t meet expectations. They’re family to him, but sadly this means he may also neglect the thoughts who feel less secure in the crew as a result. Luffy no doubt was sad about leaving the Merry, but he had to toughen up as captain so the others would not waver. Luffy was also not aware of the things Usopp knew about the Merry. So when Usopp lashes out at Luffy, questioning his authority as captain, it pisses Luffy off because it seems totally out of nowhere. Luffy went out of his way in conversation to address the situation more meticulously than basically any other action as captain he’s done up till now. I think the last time we’ve seen Luffy reel himself in as captain (at this point in the story) was when Vivi was around to teach him about restraint. Luffy is not a guy built for restraint, so that quickly deteriorates when he gets mad. Luffy ended up saying some harsh things he did not mean due to Usopp pushing his buttons. It shows how Luffy has grown a lot since the start of the show, but he’s still feisty and impulsive.
This argument is one of my favorite moments in the entire story. It’s so amazingly written and built up to, as though every arc was to lead up to this moment. It involves both the flaws of the two characters while also showcasing how much they’re grown from the start.

Also the duality of how Ussop and Luffy spent their time getting prepared for their duel is so interesting it shows their respective strengths.
Ussop probably spent all his free time gathering supplies, crafting, strategizing, expending time and energy into something that would aid him later whereas Luffy simply decided to rest both his mind and body and was very conservative with his energies saving it for when he really needs it.

If Ussop fought The Franky Family or anybody else for that matter the way he fought Luffy here confident, serious, prepared, and ready to do what it takes to win,he would never get beaten in the first place and Luffy knows Ussop is completely capable and doesn't see him the way Ussop see's himself.

@@LonelyOceanThe thing is, he has two advantages in this fight he doesn't usually have: The time to setup and foreknowledge of the opponent. I think most people are on Luffy’s side. Luffy was trying to lay it onto Ussop without upsetting him and when he tells him the truth it upsets him to the point that he takes it personal. This was much more than about the Mery it was about Ussops insecurities. Yes Luffy was saying dumb stuff heated up but he apologized right away.
Instead of going to get cooled off Ussop decided to fight Luffy and I think that’s the most messed up part. When you argue with a friend you don’t just throw death blows and a friking duel.
Ussop let his insecurities go to his head.
I think if Luffy gave it to him straight and easier on Ussop I think it would have still have the same outcome, these are two teenagers trying to navigate letting go of their home and moving on.

@@xXFoiXx at no point in the whole situation Usopp treated Luffy as the actual captain of the crew, though, and that's critical when it comes to big decisions like this.
Insecurities or not, Usopp treated Luffy like he has no awareness whatsoever of his own decision-making (and sure, Luffy is simple minded, but Usopp at this point should be well aware that the rest of the crew is there to keep that in check so that final decision was far from being a "heat of the moment" one), showing no trust in the crew and, worse, in the captain.
While not the strongest, Usopp was never as big of a liability as in this exchange: he was willing to go against everyone who is travelling with him endangering them against everyone's judgement, which is way worse than losing money to a bunch of stronger dudes.

    • @xXFoiXx

A duel in this context was for the ownership of the ship which he owns as the captain.
Usopp only treated him as the captain. He felt betrayed because he saw Luffy was not the captain he thought he was
the same way Zoro always demands that Luffy is physically stronger than Zoro and repeatedly says he only accepts Luffy as a captain as long as he is stronger
Usopp only accepts a Luffy who stands up for his friends for his Nakama.

I know yall are already arcs past this but I just found this channel today so I wanted to give my POV.
I've been reading/watching OP since 2002. One thing that comes to mind when the Luffy vs Usopp debate happens is yeah, a lot of people are seeing Luffy's side towards things but a lot aren't seeing Usopp's. One reason could be because they like Luffy more and Luffy's the captain and/or they dislike Usopp but another reason is they just can't see Usopp's POV. I've seen these episodes so many times and one thing that sticks out to me is that a lot aren't seeing that Luffy isn't trying or can't see Usopp's POV here, he just figured he he hid it things would be better when there's a thin line he can travel to make sure he isn't hiding it and yet he can get his true feelings out about it. Yeah they're teens but as a captain you gotta look at your crew's feelings regarding this and try to understand them more. Granted, Luffy's early on in his pirate journey here but still. At the end of the day both of them had their own sides and no matter what neither one of them was the right one. No matter what people be saying, nah.
    Overall amazing reaction!!

Oda has been building this moment for a long time. I think before skypea with small lines of dialogue but in the manga they are much more noticeable than in the anime. You could even say that since usopp joined the crew because usopp called himself the captain, based on this, usopp is the captain of the ship and luffy is the captain of the crew. But that will change after this arc, where luffy grows up and is now a ship and crew captain.

Sanji knows Luffy well enough to know that he would've instantly regretted telling Usopp to leave.
This fight - and this is a fight, not a squabble - was inevitable. This wasn't the first time Usopp felt useless and inadequate, not by a long shot. He's the only one who sees himself that way, everyone else recognizes his contribution both as a crewmate and a friend.
Even if they had gently broached the subject, this was still going to happen at some point. As he said, Usopp had been thinking about this for a while.
This is _not_ about pride. Luffy had to be a captain here. Friends are great, they're essential, but a captain is responsible for the lives of everyone on his ship. And when it comes to a decision that affects the lives of everyone on the ship, the captain's word is final. It has to be. Otherwise, what's the point?

  • @SenseofNoneYT
    @SenseofNoneYT 4 місяці тому +6

I think it's less of the debate of "the ship really can't be fixed" and more of just the fact that they're gonna leave Going Merry behind. It's a memento from Usopp's hometown and from Kaya. Usopp won't leave it behind, but Luffy made the decision to move on. Not as a friend, but as the captain of a crew.
Nothing about pride here. You can't talk this out unfortunately. There is no more discussion to be had between them. Going Merry isn't sea-worthy anymore and that's that. But on the other hand, Usopp is not going to leave Going Merry behind because it means too much to him personally. And there's probably no amount of discussion that can change his feelings about that.
So that duel is them agreeing to disagree. "We're moving on. If you don't like that then do what you want. Stay behind."

it was never about their pride tho.
luffy acted like a captain and prioritized the safety of the crew, instead of holding on to a ship that has passed its limits. he already told usopp his reasons (the shipwrights' assessment) and deep down usopp knew it too, but he has a hard time accepting the reality. especially since he blamed himself, thinking more money could've possibly saved the merry, despite luffy saying this was not the case. there was no more talking that could've persuaded usopp at that point, unless he saw the ship sinking right before his eyes. he was heavily resolved on not giving up on the merry. luffy understood that and agreed on usopp's terms, which led to the duel.
on the other hand, even tho all of them are attached to the merry and have always treated it like a part of their crew rather than just a ship, usopp is still understandably the one who treasures merry the most. it was a gift from kaya and a reminder of his village. not to mention it was always his job to repair the merry whenever it got damaged. among the scaredy-cats and "weaker" trio (nami/chopper/usopp), they all have core roles beyond combat - nami being the navigator, chopper the doctor, and usopp was the acting "shipwright" outside of being the sniper. hence if they were to get a new ship, he couldn't fill that role anymore and he felt as tho he'd have an even lesser contribution to the crew because he can't keep up with their monstrous strength. aside from that, usopp also has a memory of the merry that none of the other strawhats have experienced, which further adds to his attachment and why he's so adamant on not abandoning the ship here. you'll understand what i mean later.
they both had valid reasons that don't include their pride. but at the end of the day, there was no winner in this situation.

Usoppe is not the captain and the captain is the one who makes the decisions. As long as Usoppe does not accept this, he has no place in this team! He needs to realize that! There is only one captain, even if Luffy is very open in all his decisions!
BTW: Usoppe had known for a long time that Mary wouldn't make it much longer! It was subconsciously clear to him that things couldn't go on any longer! He had repaired her himself so many times. He met the Klabautermann and it was clear that this was the end somewhere. Usoppe knew this too, but he just didn't want to believe it! He was fooling himself! He lied to himself, as he has done with everything in his life. He lies to avoid the truth!

Poor usopps got some self confidence problems man. He’d rather fight to prove himself a coward , than fight to prove himself a hero. Fighting luffy is harder than anyone else he could have faced . So he already proved himself . But he doubts himself so much.

It is easy to blame Luffy for how he delivers the news but try and think how would you deliver the news? And he is dealing with the consequences and thoughts of his own on how his actions lead to Usopp being taken, his home taken away, Robin missing, money missing and having to be the one making the decision and breaking the news. Whereas for me Usopp is the one to make the decision to leave everyone behind

Luffy really didn't fuck up. Both him and Usopp have been emotionally affected by the fact the Merry can't be saved. Usopp overreacted, and its understandable, but he instigated this fight, as well as Luffy's statement that he should leave. Like, Usopp has been very confrontational and rude up until before Luffy says that. It's almost like viewers tend to side with Usopp, just because, like Usopp, the viewer doesn't understand how this is affecting Luffy emotionally. Usopp is always the underdog, and Luffy is the mc, soin this scenario, where Usopp's shame is so much of a focus, we pity him and feel biased towards him.

  • @Rrz00

  • @NaouiGhassen
    @NaouiGhassen 4 місяці тому +1

There is no one that's right here in this situation. Usopp and Luffy both are right. Usopp holds Merry in height regards because it's a memory and a gift from his lover Kaya. The same thing could be said about Luffy's Strawhat. You can't blame him for getting angry at Luffy's decision and correlating it to him getting rid of useless or obsolete things which will soon mean that Luffy will get rid of him too. Yes, if he would take a breath and think for a second and say "He is Luffy, one of my close friends and my Captain. He wouldn't do that to me !" Things would be different. But that never happens when anger and insecurity takes over your thoughts. It's a realistic and accurate representation of what happens when your emotions take over.
On the other hand, Luffy is absolutely right. If he accepted Usopp offer, it will not only put the crew in danger in the next adventures they'll be having, but it will also break the image of the Captain that he is before his own subordinates. Luffy should've watched his tongue, and because he had the time to think this through, he should've concluded that "This is gonna be rough. But no matter what the outcome, I don't have to go back on my own decision. And at the same time, I already know how Usopp will react. And he has all the right to be angry and upset. If that happens, i should talk to him slowly and tell him that trying to repair the Merry would get us all killed. Yeah ! I should do that, but at the same time watch my tone too. Screaming and getting heated won't get us nowhere. And if things go South, we'll immobilize him until he cools off."
Both of them are correct. Usopp thinks of this situation emotionally, while Luffy thinks of it logically. Both of them are right. It's just a shitty situation that gets complicated quickly due to human emotions.
