This cuts down to Usopp's growing insecurity that he shared with Nami. He knows he's weak. He fears the stronger and stronger enemies they will encounter on the Grand Line. But this sudden (from his perspective) decision to leave Merry after what he believes to be "she's useless, leave her and go" draws a direct line to his heart and mind. He feels they'll soon enough do the same to him. Never fails to make me cry, and it's such a great dynamic to start this roller coaster of two arcs.
@@kiseijuu7420 It also helps that he was the first one who realized that the Merry was actually alive. They all saw the ship as an important member of the crew, but, in his mind, if they're going to start getting rid of one thing that's useless, then he's probably next.
5:22 There's one thing this anime episode didn't seem to notice. Holy crap... I did not notice that! I got chills realizing that to Sanji, stopping Luffy from saying those words was on the same level as life-or-death!
One of the great things about this arc is this fight. It hurts, cause the conflict feels incredibly real and well-managed. They don't fight for a stupid thing, they fight because the conflict was growing around them with no one -even them- noticing it. And it is not a seinen, it is a shonen. These things hardly happens in this genre.

He is out and they have one less partner, that's the chain of command. That's the rules... The whole thing is like two trains colliding in slow motion.

I understand Usopp's position, but he crossed the line. Why would Luffy do that? Luffy also traveled with the Merry, so he asked her to repair the Mary to continue sailing again, but experts said the Merry was no longer a navigable ship. But why do they go against the law? No matter how relatively horizontal the relationship is, Luffy is definitely the captain. A sailor shall obey the captain. Even if it's a bad decision, the captain is responsible. Such a tough part to get through in a great arc. Zoro keeping calm for Luffy and his decision, Nami and Chopper being emotional to Usopp's decision, and Sanji being the middle man to it all, seeing both sides and acting a way that many don't give much credit to, especially with all the shenanigans he put Usopp through in Skypiea. Luffy delivered the news like this to ussop for a reason he doesn't want him to feel responsible for anything or feel like it's a big deal that's just why
@@Chiefshieldathat’s the point luffy thought being casual will lessen usopp’s pain but it had the opposite effect. Since usopp has been battling feeling insecure for awhile esp when he lost the money and luffy casually changing ships = usopp being easily replaceable
It specifically became really tough to watch one piece after this because it was the longest that Luffy went on without a single smile on his face…. This shows how it was tough on Luffy to have a fight with his best friend and lose him. Can’t wait to see more of your reactions on this amazing arc of one piece where people get super hooked on the series.
Even though I know the story like the back of my hand, these episodes are seriously hard to make it through. My heart is grabbed and squeezed with each word and action.
This is a really hard moment in the series because even though Usopp's clearly in the wrong, you really understand where he's coming from. First of all, Merry was given to them by Usopp's love interest, so it has a special place in his heart. Secondly, his role up until this point has been pretty much taking care of the ship, and he sucks at that. Third, he's the one who lost the money. And last, but not least, he's the weakest of the group, and he knows this, so on top of feeling really guilty about them losing the Merry, he's also dealing with his own insecurities. If they are willing to give up on Merry just because someone says Merry can't sail anymore, what assures him that they won't leave HIM once they suddenly realize he's useless. He's clearly on the wrong, of course, and he's letting his personal issues get the better of him, but you understand where this guy's coming from. At the same time, Luffy's in a real tough position because Usopp's arguably his best friend, but he can't let this just fly. He's the Captain, and they are a crew. And regardless of the love they have for each other... Usopp needs to respect that, not just for Luffy but for the rest of them too. Usopp can't just duel Luffy for the ship and then act like nothing happened, because if he can't respect the crew here, why should they trust him moving forward? They're not playing, they're aiming for the top, and they need to be serious about it. I love that you notice that Zoro's always backing Luffy down because that's why he is the second in command. He understands this isn't a game.
There's also the explanation of usopp projecting his insecurities onto Merry. He feels useless and that he's holding to crew back and feels as though he'll be left behind if he can't do simple tasks like guarding money. This insecurity becomes more possible in his mind when they plan to leave the Merry when he fails to do her job. I also notice that usopp has a small disagreement about the captain's orders when luffy sends zoro and sanji away to fight aokiji alone (may be some small foreshadowing)
Spoilers for around episode 250 You’re forgetting that Usopp was the only one who saw Merry’s klabautermann fixing the mast on Sky Island. Usopp later tells Franky that he felt like that was the spirit of Merry, and he was right. So in addition to the ship being a gift from Kaya, and him always being the one to take care of the ship, he’s also the only one of the strawhats who realizes that Merry is more than an object. Merry has an actual soul, yet they’re leaving him behind because he’s useless. If they can do that to Merry, would they do it to him? Those insecurities built up on the fact that they were all ready to ditch his precious ship which had an actual soul, and on top of that he found out that Merry couldnt be fixed anymore, and all of this hit him at once, he didn’t have time to process it like Luffy and everyone else
@@Rexasblast Yes his insecurities was a big part of his Anger & Frustration too but his Over-Attachment to 'The Going-Merry' was ALL only about his feelings for 'Kaya'. @@Lord_Cynrik 100% agree bro. Usopp's projected insecurity was the main source of this conflict -- which has been culminating since the earlier arcs. This is necessary for them to grow. The condition of Going Merry reflects the status of the crew. Hold on tight, there's more from where that came from. It's gonna get lower and lower and lower from here.
Usopp was not ready with Merry situation. When you lost someone in a brutal way you have several step like being delusionnal, angry, sad ... and i think Usopp felt guilty against himself to not be able to fight strong opponent. First time watching he was my least favorite mugiwara. I hated him SO much to be bad against strangers but good against Luffy with new attacks very interesting. But i was too implicated on the story ahaha 9
To be honest.. when I read this chapter in the comic.. I thought I'd just stop reading the OP.. it was too hard for me to digest.. luckily I kept going and it turned out to be one of the best arcs in OP.. 👍👍👍
people need to give Usopp more credit for this fight. Luffy was taking it seriously fro the very beginning, but doubted Usopps skills as usual. Usopp had this entire fight planned out. even taking Luffys punch just to bait out his bazooka for the impact dial the best weapon to use against Luffy. Still heartbreaking to see tho every time i watch it i think of how Luffy tells him to be serious and how often he used to tell people Usopp was just a liar. that defineitly didnt help his destroyed confidence
There’s always a weird reaction where people hate Usopp for fighting Luffy “trying to kill him” but no hate for Luffy when he attacks Usopp. I’ll never understand it. Also Luffy wasn’t holding back or trying not to hurt Usopp. He tried several times but Usopp countered every time. It’s moments like these where you can tell a lot about a reactor from this episode. Barring her weird interpretation of the fight, she gets a pass.
Why should there be any hate for Luffy? Usopp challenged him first, he attacked him with all he got and Luffy fought back. Luffy didn't hold back his attack, but he didn't give him 100%. If he really wanted to kill Usopp he'd already be dead.. Also there is the issue that Usopp is on the wrong on this instance. I don't say his reaction isn't understandable, but it's not reasonable either.. 😌
Bro ussopp was fully at fault here. Just because he was emotionally attached to ship doesn't mean he can disrespect his captain. Luffy did what a captain should do here. Luffy was not taking decisions emotionally, but by thinking. He had to think about his crews safety first, if they had travelled with merry they would've been stuck in ocean after some time. Luffy did what he had to do as a captain.
CAN you remember what I told you. The fight between Luffy and Zoro is pielepalle. Now you know why. But there is a better fight. One of three things is now solved. Now expect something you would think impossible.
I dont think Usopp really loves Merry more then the crew you get very angry on people you love then they do something you very much dont like! So in hes anger and disapointment [and also denial about Merry really is broken] he lashes out and is not thinking clearly and he will bitterly regret what hes done once he calms down. Also he did not try to actually kill Luffy only knocking him out (if possible)and he knows that Luffy can survive evrything he throws at him.
ah yes, the arc where you finally start to see the deeper dynamics of the group, the exact moment that one piece becomes more serious than a happy group of kid pirates

yes ussop is stupid for not listening to luffy and luffy is stupid for acepting the duel, teenagers everyone
This is necessary for them to grow. The condition of Going Merry reflects the status of the crew. Hold on tight, there's more from where that came from. It's gonna get lower and lower and lower from here.
after WCI this shows how much luffy has grown up
A rough episode for sure.

このエピソードは初めて観たとき、胸が張り裂けそうでした。
仲間同士の喧嘩は、一番辛い😢
this is breakdown from oda " we are not just kids playing pirates, we are a true pirates"
It taught readers and viewers the author's intention that adventure is not only fun. This is a very precious scene in One Piece.
Lemon's emotional vulnerability shown while watching these episodes add a lot to the viewing experience :
"That's what it means to be a captain"...
Usopp was wrong and got the beating he deserved
one of the top 10 hardest episodes to watch.
If you hadn't read the manga and were watching it new when it aired, it completely breaks you.
Your reaction got me tearing up as well
This ones a classic episode!!
When I watched this scene, I didn't cry but I only cried at the Marineford arc so I dunno how well you're gonna handle that
ここ感動だよね〜
Keren banget wkwkwk
Usopp was not ready with Merry situation. When you lost someone in a brutal way you have several step like being delusionnal, angry, sad ... and i think Usopp felt guilty against himself to not be able to fight strong opponent.
First time watching he was my least favorite mugiwara. I hated him SO much to be bad against strangers but good against Luffy with new attacks very interesting. But i was too implicated on the story ahaha

Let metell you something, whenever i know a sad episode of one piece, i go straught ti ur channel hahaha 😅 love it! Keep it up
There’s always a weird reaction where people hate Usopp for fighting Luffy “trying to kill him” but no hate for Luffy when he attacks Usopp.
ugh
Bro ussopp was fully at fault here. Just because he was emotionally attached to ship doesn't mean he can disrespect his captain. Luffy did what a captain should do here. Luffy was not taking decisions emotionally, but by thinking. He had to think about his crews safety first, if they had travelled with merry they would've been stuck in ocean after some time. Luffy did what he had to do as a captain.
This arc is a bit sad. Greetings from Colombia.
XD
CAN you remember what I told you. The fight between Luffy and Zoro is pielepalle. Now you know why. But there is a better fight.
One of three things is now solved.
Now expect something you would think impossible.
I dont think Usopp really loves Merry more then the crew you get very angry on people you love then they do something you very much dont like!
So in hes anger and disapointment [and also denial about Merry really is broken] he lashes out and is not thinking clearly and he will bitterly regret what hes done once he calms down.
Also he did not try to actually kill Luffy only knocking him out (if possible)and he knows that Luffy can survive evrything he throws at him.
i bet the other supernov.... other pirates experienced this. lots disbanded and a few surpassed these trials. much respect to other crews.
I have watched this several times but shit is still hard to watch. This translation is different and mature than the one before
ah yes, the arc where you finally start to see the deeper dynamics of the group, the exact moment that one piece becomes more serious than a happy group of kid pirates
when the time we need it, it gone~~ LOL missing tissue is a problem
one of my fav fights!
I was waiting for it :000
And...here....we....go...
goodbye usopp kun
16:11 no that's not merry crying, that's just the water from the rain
Yeah, obviously. But it IS definitely shown like he's crying and symbolic.
"That's just the water, period" could be the driest comment I can think of from that picture.
@@Nikujaga4649 merry is crying from ussops gas, it hurting its eyes
@@atastycloud Now that's a great point of view
