Usopp has abandonment issues. His dad left him. His mom died shortly after. The only person his age that befriended him was dying just like his mother. His insecurities about being abandoned came out during this fight. He thinks because he's weak they'll leave him like the Going Merry. This was main channel worthy!

Fun Fact: When Usopp said, "I can no longer keep up with your strength anymore," only Chopper didn't quite understand his words. That's because Chopper has seen his strength so often in Arabasta and Sky Island.
As for why Usopp was so much more effective here, in most of his fights, he has to think on his feet and improvise, but here, he was able to plan things out and make preparations. Plus, he actually knows Luffy and what would be effective against him
Uspopp's attachment to this ship isn't only the result of it being given by Kaya, but also because he sees the Merry as a crewmember. If Luffy can throw away beaten and useless crewmembers "this easily" then surely Usopp himself will be the next one getting thrown out, that's why he became so aggrevated, he knew he didn't live up to the expectation thus far.

Usopp and Luffy both are right. He doesn’t want to abandon the ship because he was abandoned and feels Luffy will eventually abandon him when he does not need him. Luffy is right, as he doesn’t want to sail on a broken ship and risk all the crew life. That’s why I love this scene.

Luffy treated it seriously from the first second. But like Usopp said, he knows how Luffy fights and he prepared for it. Whenever Luffy tried something, Usopp already had a counter to it. But just having counters is not enough in a fight like this.

I don't know if you are going to read this comment but this moment was built from many arcs ago with small dialogues, where Usopp was the one who had to repair the boat but the key moment was when Aokiji appeared. At some point in that chapter, luffy gives them the order to retreat and wait for him to finish the battle with Aokiji, Sanji and Zoro understood it but Usopp didn't understand it, because even though it was a direct order from his captain, Usopp interpreted it as a friend, someone of the same level. Which is wrong in a crew. Also another key moment in that chapter was when Aokiji questioned luffy's position as captain, then when he went to repair the ship and Iceburg did it again about keeping the crew safe on an unseaworthy ship and finally Usopp when they argued about changing ships. Oda was slowly building this arc from way back. In the manga it's a bit more obvious because you have time to read the dialogues calmly but in the anime you miss these clues that Oda leaves.
The best 2 moments on the first half of One Piece are the moments that show Luffy's growth in maturity due to reality check. The first time in Water Seven / Ennys Lobby and the second time after Marine Ford.

A lot of great moments in one piece. For me. This was the one that elevated it to a masterpiece. Everything prior to this was a slow build of an optimistic knucklehead who could buckle down and kick ass when needed. But this was a fight Luffy did not expect to have to fight. He lost his cool in a way we've never seen before. It is a learning experience. Every time I think of these episodes. The aggravation usopp feels and how Luffy doesn't want to lose his friend but only knows to stay his course to be the king of the pirates. He grows and learns and shows depths we hadn't seen before. Usopp said that he was a useless friend, but when I think about how the Straw Hat Pirates might have been wiped out if it weren't for Usopp in the upcoming arc, I realize that there is no such thing as an unnecessary ability.

This is why it's really best to have a Angel's heart and a Devil's Mind..... Let me explain why I said it:- The scene where Luffy was about to say that like telling Usopp to leave the crew that's the scene where it proves Luffy's innocence even from mind....like he really was going say that and apologize later if Sanji would not have kicked him...and that's when he apologized asap..... that's the thing a person with Angel's Mind would do But if he had a mind of a devil means....he would have completely understand the situation and felt for usopp just like it happened but instead of going on a argument with Usopp....after analysing his side he would have faked more pain (the pain he was feeling for Going Marry) and would have never said that what caused all of this, what caused usopp to say all those stuffs afterwards and think bad about Luffy's character. Imo a little bit of manipulation like this is not bad at all.....but unfortunately that is so rare and that's why ppl go into arguments like this and break so many bonds 😞😞😫
Nickkkkkkkkkk you're finally here ...i've used to watch your one piece reactions the second they are out in patreon, and now due to medical exams , its been so long since I watched them, i'm so proud of you for coming this far, the story only gets better and better , be ready...oh and don't forget to prepare some tissues
Imagine a fight between them were Usopp has to predict with his [REDACTED] where Van Augur is going to appear, which would look to most like Usopp shooting into nowhere, but in reality it would stop Van Augur from having enough time to take aim. Since they're both snipers the fight should take over the entire island. What would be cool, could be if they were going to intervene in everyones fight, since they're all in range of those two. Imagine the final Luffy vs Kaido fight, but Usopp and Van Augur are there making it even a bigger mess.
As someone whos already caught up, I can say that Usopp reacted a little bit too sensitive. Of course the ship, which Kaya gave him, meant a lot to him and he saw it as a crewmember and he was also scared that he would be the next crewmember whos been sorted out, but AFTER ALL Luffy IS still the captain and when the captain makes a choice, EVERYONE has to follow them. ( Of course not every choice is right even If its from the captain but thats another topic) I dont deny the fact that It was also Luffys fault, but even as the captain he is still HUMAN and he has his problems too and he is not just the superhappy and goofy person, which we always see. In this arc Zorro was the GOAT. He reacted like he should as a vice-captain and took over when Luffy couldnt. Hes just the best written character :) -> Zorros also a great example of how a person should react in such situations. He kept a cool head, tought logically and didnt let his emotions take over. ( This all is just MY OPINION and it dosent mean that IT HAS TO BE RIGHT; If u think different about it thats great but this if how I see it!!) ^^
It's not just because of Kaya. Later on, Usopp described Merry as "terminally ill" after saying he knew what bad shape it was in. To use that wording... who else in his life abandoned a terminally ill person? I still think that Usopp's biggest lie is that he has no ill will towards Yasopp.
Usopp has abandonment issues. His dad left him. His mom died shortly after. The only person his age that befriended him was dying just like his mother. His insecurities about being abandoned came out during this fight. He thinks because he's weak they'll leave him like the Going Merry. This was main channel worthy!

But if he had a mind of a devil means....he would have completely understand the situation and felt for usopp just like it happened but instead of going on a argument with Usopp....after analysing his side he would have faked more pain (the pain he was feeling for Going Marry) and would have never said that what caused all of this, what caused usopp to say all those stuffs afterwards and think bad about Luffy's character. Imo a little bit of manipulation like this is not bad at all.....but unfortunately that is so rare and that's why ppl go into arguments like this and break so many bonds 😞😞😫
This fight was the first and only time one piece has made me cry
Even after all these years... Still hurts😢
This arc was so hard and painful to watch but necessary for the gang's growth. I can't stop crying when I remember those episodes.
Wait until you see the Man with the baby suit will make you cry :)
3:58 nic's hair looking like merry on the stick there.
ODA DOES NOT MISS
Nickkkkkkkkkk you're finally here ...i've used to watch your one piece reactions the second they are out in patreon, and now due to medical exams , its been so long since I watched them, i'm so proud of you for coming this far, the story only gets better and better , be ready...oh and don't forget to prepare some tissues
Usopp kept pulling stuff outta his ass like he was batman or sumthin
"where has thud usopp been?" friend this is usopp with prep time, something he never has with the straw hats fight on sight tactics
I swear if Usopp doesn't get a 1v1 fight in the final saga, I am going to riot! Van Augur, where are you?! Fall to the hands of God Usopp already!
Imagine the final Luffy vs Kaido fight, but Usopp and Van Augur are there making it even a bigger mess.
im only at thriller bark, but as of yet this is by far my favorite part of the show!
One piece took a huge turn from this Arc. GOAT water 7
"We're not playing the pirates"
As someone whos already caught up, I can say that Usopp reacted a little bit too sensitive. Of course the ship, which Kaya gave him, meant a lot to him and he saw it as a crewmember and he was also scared that he would be the next crewmember whos been sorted out, but AFTER ALL Luffy IS still the captain and when the captain makes a choice, EVERYONE has to follow them. ( Of course not every choice is right even If its from the captain but thats another topic)
I dont deny the fact that It was also Luffys fault, but even as the captain he is still HUMAN and he has his problems too and he is not just the superhappy and goofy person, which we always see.
In this arc Zorro was the GOAT. He reacted like he should as a vice-captain and took over when Luffy couldnt. Hes just the best written character :) -> Zorros also a great example of how a person should react in such situations. He kept a cool head, tought logically and didnt let his emotions take over.
( This all is just MY OPINION and it dosent mean that IT HAS TO BE RIGHT; If u think different about it thats great but this if how I see it!!) ^^
Usopp feels useless in this moment and feels like Luffy will abandon him like he is doing to Merry who is now useless
I don't think anyone predicted they would cry over a ship, but here we are. 😂
Usopp is like Batman, he's a god when he knows his enemy and has prep time.
Ofc he loves the ship, its from Kaya man!
One of the best arcs of one piece🔥🔥
It's not just because of Kaya. Later on, Usopp described Merry as "terminally ill" after saying he knew what bad shape it was in. To use that wording... who else in his life abandoned a terminally ill person? I still think that Usopp's biggest lie is that he has no ill will towards Yasopp.
Best arc of the anime, make sure to enjoy
He is not ready
This is why One Piece is on top imo
Usopp is very skilled, but he usually doesnt have time to prep for his opponents.
Yes the moment where we all cry for a boat
😭😭😭
Yeah, Water 7 is a massive turn for the crew, that's for sure.
You should make a playlist, I didn't even know you were up to this point
