This is the best UA-cam video EVER! Short and to the point. And it worked! Saved me from going insane. All the other videos and written descriptions were flawed and/or overly complicated. While doing your fix I saw my pump had been mounted vertical not horizontal. Fixed that which also fixed the kink in the input supply line. It's running better than it was from the factory! Thanks!
Thank you for making this video. Mine was rebuilt with replacement parts just last year. It worked fine until I got a leak in my utility bay. The leak has been corrected, but the pump still continuously runs. There's great water flow into the RV, and no air in the lines, so finding this video is golden if adjusting the pressure switch corrects my continuous run issue.
Thanks so much for this video. It saved me from having to take my travel trailer to a RV repair center. The filter bowel was completely full of gunk. Cleaned it and put it back on.....the pump started pumping water immediately....worked beautifully!! Thanks again!!
You just saved me from spending a couple of days with Shureflo customer support. All I needed was to make an adjustment on the shut-off. My new pump worked fine for a few days then would just purr and not shut off. Adjusting the shut-off with the little screw did the job, so far. I liked and subscribed to show my appreciation.
I want to thank you for this video. I have a version of pump that has a vole on it. That’s a white colored plastic instead of clear. I don’t think that makes a difference, but they had the bowl installed from the factory in the down position. I turned it up and clean the screen, even though it looked clean, and now it works perfectly, and does not run on after shutting off, the water
Really good video and the first time I have seen any information about how to orient the strainer. Even the Shurflo/Pentair manual shows the strainer oriented with the plastic cover on the lower side, but it makes perfect sense that it be on the top to make priming easier.
I wish I found this video 20 hours of troubleshooting ago. Nailed my problem perfectly. I spun the filter so I could get a bit of water in. Worked like a charm but would only draw water from the winterizing hose, via a bucket full of water. Wouldn't draw from the fresh water holding tank. Then I realized I didn't spin the filter back to where it was to tighten it up. It was drawing air and a slow drip clued me in to that. Thank you SO MUCH.
LEGEND! Thanks a million! We've been having water pressure issues and hammering in our van for weeks now. We weren't even aware of the filter. Had the van 1.5 years and found it was almost completely blocked with dark, tarry gunk from bad water. Removed and scrubbed and cleaned the filter and now we have our pressure back and no hammering. We've been travelling full time the past 4 months and another 6-8 months to go so you have saved us any further grief or costs for servicing too!:-) Thanks again!
We’ve looked at dozens of videos on our water pump for our camper. This by far has been the very best short to the point super detailed visual helpful! Thank you thank you thank you!

Hola buenas tardes! Muy buena información sobre la bomba shurflo, yo tengo la 4008 y el problema que no apaga la pero gracias al tutorial se como regularla desde la llave alem . Saludos desde Argentina!
Super helpful..... Our strainer was upside down and the re-priming it worked like a charm... Thank you for saving me $250.00 i was ready to get a new one installed.
Hey! I've been struggling with a newly installed temperamental pump that i could not get to cycle off- checked wiring, connections, regulators, everything- this is the first troubleshoot i saw that told me to flip my strainer! Worked asap, thank you!
Thank You! Heading to Big Bend National Park in Texas. After winterizing I thought the pump died. Just lost its' prime. I would have never thought of that. Happy Travels!
Thank you Sir, you saved my butt. My strainer container points down. In the up position it leaks but I was able to live with the leak long enough to prime the pump. Tightened it back down and good to go. Much appreciated.
Thank you! This is the best troubleshoot video I have seen. It helped me fix my pump, which the store I purchased if from could not do. Much appreciated.
Thanks Reace. Good timing this video. Just found out today that my new pump (replaced the original 6 weeks ago) is letting the fresh water tank fill while on city water. I thought it might be the very hard water here in Arizona. I’ll try your suggestion of letting the pump try to flush out the valve before taking it apart. Cheers.
Hi, while your explanation of taking out the diaphragm at 7:15 is correct you left out a safety caution(a big one). The rest of the pump assembly can fall(and did) right off the motor assembly and unlike the diaphragm orientation you DO have to have the motor pump assembly oriented correctly, and while they do give orientation markings I couldn't see how to get the shaft to move so they could be oriented correctly. But as they say second time's the charm(or it was with me anyway). I was worried for a bit there, but I just needed to adjust the check valve spring(make sure you have a good set of allen wrenches as I used another key that worked just fine) and I was good to go. I wouldn't have attempted it without this video's help but it did bring up this issue if anyone else is going to try this at home. '
thank you... saved me from replacing pump. I had no idea. I basically pulled a plant out of the filter. I guess my old camper never had this feature or I was just lucky after 20 years.
Hey, nice video! Really like how you disassembled the pump and showed how to trouble-shoot the darn thing! One note though, I double checked with Pentair/Shurflo and they don't recommend installing the strainer upside down like that... The sediment that is collected in the strainer would then dump back down into the pump itself the next time you opened it. Perhaps Escape Trailers are different from my KZ Durango, my pump is mounted horizontally vs. vertical like you have here. Thanks again for the great video, really enjoyed it.
Mine is horizontal and has the strainer on the bottom. Your explanation of what would happen to strained material makes complete sense. No longer worried mine is installed incorrectly. Thank you.
Thank you! Soled my problem!! However I do have 1 quick question, I noticed that our screen (filter) is not orientated up the same way as yours. Ours is sideways and I can't twist it on the thread any further. Do you think this is likely to cause us any issues?
I noticed you have your pump motor installed on the bottom. Is there any chance water could leak out of the pump part into the electric motor and fry the motor? I have always installed my pump with the motor on top in case of a leak the water doesnt go into the electric motor.
Could I ask why you have the strainer that way up?? We use these systems for window cleaning and as standard the pumps and strainers are set up upside to your set up, any help appreciated
Question for you. Water tank is full, turned on water pump and it is pumping water out through the city water connection. I am guessing that the check valve is failing at the pump. Trailer is 14 years old, should I just replace the pump?
Good video, but I believe your installation is upside-down; you don't want fluid flowing down to the electric motor. I also think your filter is upside down. Shurflo manual - "The pump may be mounted in any position. However, if mounting the pump vertically, the pump head should be in the down position so that in the unlikely event of a leak, fluid will not enter the motor."
my pump is mounted horizontally, and the filter pump is not directly attached to it but down the way a bit further and I am unable to spin the direction, it is also facing horizontal, in this case how can I circumvent that?
We had the "plastic shavings in the diaphragm" issue!!!! Why don't they deal with this/ clean out the fresh water tank after drilling... at the facility when building the camper???
The pump in my 2022 camper that I purchased in January 2022 will only prime by filling the hose with water and then raising the hose up above the pump to get the pump to pull in water. I have never been able to pump water into the camper when the bucket was below the pump. Also the pump will lose its prime when I move the camper. Once primed the pump does stay primed until I move the camper. No leaks, all water connections are tight. Any idea why this is happening?
Just today my pump began running for a second or two each minute. No leaks in the trailer. Can the pump depressurize back into the fresh tank this causing it to run? Any thoughts would be hepful.
Mine as well! I will bee adjusting it as soon as I get a chance. It runs when the faucet is off, just as in the video, so I’m getting mine in properly adjust it.
Hey, I’ve just had one of these installed on my food truck to run taps and coffee machine. Worked for a few hours then when I took the water supply bottle out to top up it stopped working. Now it seems to work for a couple of minutes it I tap the side of the pump with like a screw driver, quite hard, then it cuts out again. Any ideas….it is an old pump from an older van I am re-using so not brand new.
Thank you so much, but my Shurflo 4008-101-A65 has the strainer on the side, neither top nor bottom, and it doesn't have an opening to pour water in when connected to the line. Neither top or bottom. How do I prime the pump then? Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Hi, just viewed this video. My strainer is also on the side. I wonder if get an answer on how to prime. Would appreciate if you can share info. Thanks.
@@vidflick the problem turned out to be the output of the tank, and the pump was just fine. The line was bent at the output, and it was stopping the flow of water.
what causes the pump to be loud,, I removed the diaphragm and ran the motor which was very quiet. reassembled the pump and it is loud, do I need to replace the diaphragm?
Hi Steven, It would be best to contact our parts and service departments as they can help you troubleshoot the issue. partsandservice@escapetrailer.com
My pump is installed horizontally, and recently we emptied our water for a freeze week. Then we refilled and ran the water and noticed a leak coming from the bottom red wire. Any clue on what’s wrong? We tried to adjust the pressure but it only stops leaking at minimum water pressure. No debris in our filter either. And the way it’s installed is on the bottom.
The clear cap needs to be at the top because it stays filled with water and will help prime the pump. If the cap were facing downwards the water would stay in the cap and during winter it will freeze and crack. The water pushes through the filter and will catch all debris.
So my pump is installed up side down compared to yours. I guess I can’t turn it around based on where the water input is vs output. That said should the strainer still be “on the top”?

Ok, easy enough....but my pump is on the floor, filter covered with 1/2 dozen pipes, it's not pointed up; it's sideways so it can't be primed, no way to get allen wrench in because the the adjustments is against the wall! I've been a technician for years, retired as an aircraft electrician and nothing, Nothing mechanical is made for the fixer!!
