Thank you so much for taking a look at it. As my favorite band I guess I am just looking for validation that he is a really impressive drummer. Sorry it was just a short warm up snippit. I was really torn what video to pick, or which song to pick that would show you all the aspects that I love about his drumming. I also don't know what would be impressive to a good drummer as I said I am a beginner drummer. But I hope all the Clutch fans find this video so you see how much support and views you will get if you do more Clutch videos. And maybe they will help suggest some videos and help me find some gems :D So idk what its called that I love. Is it syncopation? Is it playing the ands? I hope that as I learn the drums more I will be able to tell what it is that grabs me. But I love "Drink to the dead", "Soap makers", "Frankenstein" ,"DC Sound attack" -which has this cow bell style pattern ,but the singer gets involved with it which is really fun. But he has soo many interesting drum patterns like "Red horse rainbow". Only thing that sucks about having such a good favorite drummer is it feels like their songs are too difficult for me to learn :D
GREAT pick! And so glad to get to a completely new drummer. He's just got great control and a real nice feel/pocket. He looks super relaxed and can 'just let his hands go'. Can't wait to see the full band. Thanks for the support and the pick!
Clutch is one of my favorite bands. They cannot be defined by one song, one album or even group of albums. They cover a very wide spectrum. Hope you enjoy them.
I'm not a huge jam band fan(I know Clutch isn't a jam band. I'm a huge Clutch fan) but I always loved watching these guys go off on a 10-15 minute improvised jam at their concerts. I've seen them more than 20 times live and they never disappoint.
Jean-Paul Gaster is an extraordinary drummer. Someone recommended Clutch to me on an old message board back in 2004 or 2005, and I was instantly hooked after buying Blast Tyrant. They've been one of the best-kept secrets in rock'n'roll for 30 years. They have a loyal following, but they never really broke big. Blast Tyrant and Earth Rocker are my favorite albums by them by far. Calling JP a "drummer's drummer" is a very apt description...his pocket is so deep, you could steer an oil tanker through it.
they wont "break big" because they wont bribe the music industry to play their music on corporate radio and they dont work for any record label. those two things are why they never get any air play or promotion
literally one if the nicest guys ive ever had the pleasure of talking to. i was way too early to a concert once (all the trains happened to be on time and i didnt expect that) and the Tour bus was parked like 25 meters down the road and he came out for a smoke break or something and saw me standing there alone in front of the venue and came over for a couple minutes to chat.. i told him something like "when i listen to you i feel like dennis chambers got into bluesrock or stoner rock" and he thought that was funny. he's a really groovy and really down to earth rocker 😉
JP is more in the pocket than a joey. The drumming in the vid wasn't a million miles away from the grooves he plays in the band. They play heavy blues influenced rock for the most part.

Wow, that is a GREAT double bill! I wish I had seen that...I actually think I remember seeing that tour announced, but they played nowhere near where I live.
That’s a dream. Years ago Clutch had an opening band called the Mike Dillon Band. Mike Dillon played vibraphone for Primus on Primus and the Chocolate Factory.
So glad I found this channel. Love seeing the much deserved appreciation for JP. Love watching him play, love listening to him! With any luck, I'll score one of his sticks. I got Neil's pick at one of the last shows
GOOD MORNING FROM NEW ENGLAND...GREAT COMPARISON WITH MARIO DUPLANTIER DOING THOSE HI HAT BEATS...MY LEFT FOOT NEVER STOPS MOVING UNLESS IM USING IT FOR X2 KICK DRUM STUFF...OTHERWISE WISE THAT LEFT FOOT IS HOLDING DOWN THE 1....GLAD TO SEE YOU SURVIVED UR GIG ANDREW...PEACE FROM THE NORTHEAST
Can’t recommend Clutch enough, but JP is just interstellar with his ability. He’s literally the drummer that never stops playing-after their trailer is loaded out for gigs, he sets up a practice kit in said trailer and practices from sound check until showtime. The drummer’s drummers drummer.
JEAN-PAUL GASTER is my favorite 'Rock' drummer. I like Rock guys whop can groove with power and he grooves and has the feel down.. As a Bass player if I could pick only one drummer to jam with it would be Jean-Paul. He's a Rock Bass players dream drummer for sure.
JP having fun. Isn't that what it's all about? Great accents on the cowbell, because it sounds like he's playing 2 cowbells on the full song with rest of the band.
JP is amazing. He plays a simple 5 piece and plays the hell out of every inch of it. I wild to see the live. This big dude sits down behind this tiny kit and just goes ape shit, haha! As a Maryland boy, Clutch is one of our hometown heroes. I see them every time they come home. I'm not a drummer. I'm a guitar player/vocalist. Even as such JP is one of those drummers that just catches your attention. Groove is such an important part of Clutch's sound. There is a video on Meinl Cymbals website of him playing In Walks Barbarella. You should check that out.
If you really want to get into how groove/pocket-oriented JP is, listen to DC Sound Attack! off of Earth Rocker. His drumming is just mind-blowing...it's SO simple, but he nails the pocket of the song to such a degree that it can't be denied. Just so many tasty licks and fills...I know you will love it if you listen to it.
Please react to 2021 EM UMA MÚSICA - Lucas inutilismo (2021 IN A SONG) , it is a video of a Brazilian who put all the songs that were successful in 2021 in a song in an epic way, it's chilling all the time, you will liked
JP is one of my absolute favorites. He's a master at his craft. Amazingly relaxed drummer. I've seen him 3 times live at small shows, and I'm always amazed at his incredible time. Clutch doesn't wear in-ears with metronomes. That ain't rock!
you should look into the bakerton group, that's basically clutch doing space jazz with no vocals, I saw a two set evening with Clutch concert years ago and they played the El Rojo album. it's a ton of super awesome jazz jams
@@AndrewRooneyDrums if you're interested at all, you should check out any of the doom saloon videos. In one of them, they cover Sabbaths' master of this world.
Jean Paul is the closest to a modern day John Bonham. You gotta see him play live, and the intensity he has. He plays hard, and all wrist just like Bonham. And when the rest of the drummers are trying to see if they can do 200 bpm on double bass JP does just fine with a single bass drum. The number one thing about a musician: Do they sound good? JP sounds great and is the main reason Clutch kicks ass.
Almost a waste just watching a warmup video of him playing. As much as I like to hear him solo, he flourishes the most with the whole band. When they "click" the just transcend to another level!

Clutch live is the best! Seen them along with Primus! Maybe the best day ever!

Which drummer did you see for Primus?
Mienl cymbals has some great video of JP showing off some of his Meinl cymbals

That warmup is pretty telling of how the band sounds. The gogo style is very influential on their sound.

Clutch are fantastic. What other band has a song, and a good song, (“Hot Bottom Feeder”) that is recipe for making crab cakes?
not for crab cakes, but theres a few more or less recipe songs. Die Eier von Satan by Tool is a very special recipe for deviled eggs for example
HAHA! That's awesome Christopher
I only discovered Clutch 30 years too late about a year ago. Now one of my favourite bands and the rhythm section anchors it.
