I was 17 when Stevie died. I knew of him but didn't listen to his music. About 5 years ago I rediscovered him and was blown away. Man, I wish I would have made it to a concert before he passed. He is THE G.O.A.T. No one compares. React to Life without you at The Capital theater great performance.
You brought joy to my soul watching you see this first time. SRV was one of our best guitarists and human beings. Austin City Limits shows with him are primo.
This man WAS his guitar - and the guitar WAS him! There will never be another SRV. SO MUCH TALENT!! LOVE HEALY, TOO! RIP to them, BOTH - they are SO SORELY MISSED!
Nah. He was great but highly repetitive. This whole song he played the same licks over and over. He played them so well and effortlessly and they are great licks for sure but his playing was very predictable.
I started playing the screechy, hair guitar in 1985 when I was 15. Stevie came along a few years later and instantly had a fan. For anyone who questions if there's a God or a higher power, if you see this, it truly should answer the question. I've been playing for 35 years and can't play like that. Stevie truly is/was a very special person. To play like that truly is a gift. He was chosen, and that's why we only had him for a few years. You should really watch the entire El Mocambo concert. It's the standard for all of his other performances. That night was special. He was on fire. Unless you play and have seen hundreds of his performances, you may not know exactly what I mean. If God plays a Fender Stratocaster, he plays it just like Stevie plays his. 😁
Excellent reaction. It has been rumored that SRV never died, God just wanted guitar lessons! If you want to hear the essence of Stevie Ray Vaughan, treat yourself to Stevie Ray Vaughan “Tin Pan Alley” with Johnny Copeland. Both artists were on fire that session. The respect shown on that stage was quintessential Stevie Ray Vaughan.
"Stevie was an endless, open channel that music just poured out of. He made people who'd never touched a guitar in their life want to pick one up and start playing, and he made those of us who'd played live onstage with him before want to quit.".....................Eric Clapton.
Talk about a mega-talent gone way too soon. I saw him live playing a side stage at a fest waaaaay back in the day. No idea who he was, never heard of him. From the first song, I was blown away. My friends walked away at the end of his set and we were all speechless. A timeless legend.
“When I play, I play sort of like talking, you know, syllables, you say a sentence here, a sentence there and then, I’ve to stop and think for something else to keep my conversation going. But his didn’t seem to be that at all. It was fluent, he flowed when he played. He could get something going and it was like a song and it would just go on and on. Ideas continuously flowed, I don’t have that. There is not a lot of people that I hear that have that but Stevie had it.” - BB King Anything from this Live at El Mocambo concert is the epitome of blues guitar playing.
Yes. It's like breathing to him. Great way to put it. BB King said most great players play in phrases while Stevie speaks sentences. (Or something like that) :-)
Oh, girl! This is one of his best live performances.. SRV the GOAT of blues... (I love watching first-time viewers .. esp. when he puts it behind his back.. and THEN steps up to SANG-lol) appreciate your listen & reaction! (p.s. Jeff Healey! YES!)
SRV ~ 🎸🐐 The goatiest goat in all of goatness For the next two in the trinity of must-see SRV vids: **Life Without You at Capitol Theater** **Voodoo Child at Austin City Limits 1989**
Now you CAN'T POSSIBLY have never heard of SRV!!!! It is IMPOSSIBLE!!! Dude singlehandedly revived the blues in the early 80's! Just a genius who gave tribute to those blues artists before him. NEVER forgot his roots. Through him I learned of Albert King, Freddie Collins, Lonnie Mack, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy and of course BB King and Muddy Waters! Just good ol tasty bluesmen!
SRV's soul and fingers were one with his guitar. You need to watch his performance of "look at little sister " from Austin City Limits. He does something that will blow your mind.
"Come On", is right. What a master, and even when the music got quiter Stevie was able to ratchet up the intensity, by playing slower and using his fingers to pick. The skin against the strings changed the whole dynamic. What a player !! Mosr guitarists play notes, Stevie played MUSIC !!
I’m cracking up watching your expression when he started playing his guitar behind his back. Every reactor has the same open mouthed speechless look on their faces. Too much fun! He really was exceptional.
You have a lot of wonderful experiences in store. SRV does a nice cover of Jimi Hendrix's classic Little Wing. It would give you another perspective on his playing. BTW, to show his versatility, Stevie was lead guitarist for the entire Let's Dance album by David Bowie. Your reaction choices lately have really been synced up with my musical interests, RTM. Looking forward to the next one!
Little Wing is my #1 Fav cover of his. Best guitar player, next to Prince and Eddie Van Halen. So happy I was on the planet when they were still here, and got to see 2 perform live in person. Was too young to catch SRV, but was obsessed in high school, as a guitar player myself. “Pride and Joy”, “House Is A Rockin” and “Mary Had A Little Lamb” are used in movies pretty frequently.
I was waiting for the ol' "kicking myself". People always say 'How'? after the jaw drop. You gotta see "Tin Pan Alley"(a performance with Johnny Copeland). You're gonna fall in love with Stevie! ☮️
I've seen many great reactions to this.. This is in my Top 5. As calm and restrained as she was, her facial expressions spoke loud and clear. The look of trying to process what you're seeing/experiencing is priceless. Stevie has so many jaw dropping performances, but this one seems to get everybody. SRV was unreal. He was next-level special. It pains me to this day that he had to move on. 😞💔 Thank God he left us these gems to continually appreciate. GOAT ✌
Glad you discovered Stevie Ray! When his first album got a little airplay in '83 it was like teak or mahogany had just gotten introduced to a musical world made of Styrofoam. I got to see him at the Universal Amphitheatre in LA in '84. We got a stunning but short run from an amazing player. I'm glad I was somehow on the planet at exactly the right time.
It was a stinkin' hot evening in Toronto, I was lucky enough to be there, it was broadcast live on either CityTV or MuchMusic, The Elmo is a legendary bar, some great acts have played there. Stevie Ray gave Colin James his big break when the opening act didn't show up in Saskatoon, Colin got the call to fill in and ended up touring with him.
@@tomroome4118 Ya it was those simulcasts they would do with CHUM FM from the 70's til' the early 80's and it was always on the wknd's from one of the dive's downtown.
Hey Charlene......Charlene here. The El Mo was an old haunt of mine during the 70's & 80's. When you mentioned about "kicking yourself" it reminded me of missing that SRV date. Like you I wasn't tuned into his music, so I passed. Aaargh!! Thanks for your reaction & promotion of our amazing & sadly missed Jeff Healey. Cheers!
Highly recommend "Stevie Ray Vaughan Tin Pan Alley (with Johnny Copeland)" next! A beautiful showcase of his voice and playing, as well as how respectful and deferential he is when he shares the stage with another legend! Along with this rendition of Texas Flood, it is my top favorite live performance of any artist, anytime!
The El Macombo was a revered musical venue in Toronto, Canada. Rolling Stones and many others played and hung out there. SRV met Jeff Healy when he was 20 and he became his sponsor. SRV and Jeff became good friends and Jeff was there cheering him at Stevie’s last concert before he left on the helicopter on that fateful night. Jeff was heartbroken for years 😢
If you are looking for another surprising live guitar performance: "25 or 6 to 4" by Chicago, and you want the Live at Tanglewood version from (I think) 1970. The lead guitarist, Terry Kath, was another legend we lost too soon.
The G.O.A.T. If you watch him carefully, he almost NEVER looks at the fretboard or the strings. He knows where every inch of that guitar is. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
"Mary Had a Little Lamb"-live. "A kids poem? What?" Then "Wow" By thew way, a lotta great guitarists have used teeth, over the head, etc. but he PLAYS it in all these positions!
Most guitar soloing, is playing sections of scales, matching the chord in the progression of the song. Guitarists early on learn to practice their scales over and over to the point where the fingers get the muscle memory of when and where they should be,. Whether playing in front of the stomach, or behind the back, the positions and scales are all the same. Looking at them does not help to play. The hardest part of playing behind the back is not letting your butt or shirt touch the strings while playing. Stevie put his 10,000 hours in on those scales and plays them faster than anyone. Probably, the best guitarist in blues and rock that ever existed.
According to Tommy Shannon (bass) in his book he notes that this was the best performance of Stevie's career that was captured on tape. However, he and Stevie were also shoulder deep in a cocaine addiction. 1 hour before this very show, SRV was in a coma backstage from cocaine, and had to have medical personnel rouse him with vitamins, and IV fluids. Hence the extra extra sweat and notes.
You MUST listen to SRV's "Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up On Love" live at the Capitol Theater, Passaic, NJ. The passion is incredible... what he communicates through the guitar, AND the vocals makes this performance of the song one of my favorites! My favorite part is where a smile comes to Stevie's face, mid-song, at the audience response, feeling the warmth, the connection. I will always be in love with the music and the man. So full of truth, soul, spirit, generosity, humility, authenticity, a creative flow that is truly organic, genuine passion, and great love! Be sure to watch "Life Without You" and other performances from this same concert, too. As you wondered, SRV has many sides to explore through his music, in original pieces and covers. Everything from the blues to rock to jazz. Pensive, joyous, aggressive, rollicking, tongue-in-cheek, heart-warming, ethereal... all Stevie... communicated so sublimely and honestly. You will so enjoy going down this rabbit hole🕳️. Welcome to an artist who is strong enough and vulnerable enough to show you his real self and amazing heart. ❤️ 🎸🕊️ 🎶🐐
I don't know why everybody goes for the El macambo performance because a few years later he was on Austin City limits and he dominates this performance of Texas Flood there which this one's amazing too. But the second one is just outrageously good

Once you've familiarized yourself with Stevie's body of work, I'd suggest listening to his brother Jimmie, too. Jimmie was an original member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, who had a top 10 in 1986 called "Tuff Enuff". From his solo career, just as a starter set, I'd suggest "Just a Game" and "Hey Yeah"; there is also a banging cover version of the latter by the Steve Miller Band.
