Also, many of us expats could go there and enjoy these meals for a reasonable price compared to our home land but most of us have to be careful with our spending if we decide to live there. I actually can understand why some would live there and not care about travel and leaning a new culture. They are going there because they might be retirement age and can't afford to enjoy a nice lifestyle in their home country. They want comfort and can get that there at a reasonable price. I've been following Tom for quite a while after I found Roaming Hogan. I was extremely happy for him when he met Lay and could tell there was a spark between them from the very start. After 22 years in Switzerland with my husband, soon we are going back to philippines for good. After we settled there. We are planing to travel too, I never been to Thailand, Vietnam, Laos Japan, etc. That's our retired goal . Obcourse just slowly we are not young anymore like you and lay.
Kinda funny how so many ‘know it alls’ seem to know more about your life than yourselves. We probably see a fraction of your life on the channel and have no idea of the discussions you may or may not have had, or what financial position you’re in. Too many are too sensitive and jump to conclusions for sure. My biggest challenge in the Philippines is firstly the lack of quality restaurants and good food, secondly, toxic family/friends and people who are two faced. The foreigner must be patient/respectful/diplomatic while firm and enforcing his boundaries. While the Filipina must have the courage to back up her man and stop the push and pull of selfish/jealous people around her who always have something to say.

Tom, I can't believe some of the comments. I am like you, I lived 5 years in Bangkok and now 5 years in Philippines ( not including the pandemic) and the NUMBER 1 reason I am here is because of my GF! Thailand ( especially Bangkok my favourite city) is superior in many ways but I chose to live in San Juan La Union because of the beach , great bars , cafes etc ( you will love it here). The Filipino food is very mundane and boring to us foreigners, so here I source the food from all the shops that can satisfy my Foreign taste. We travel overseas a lot and avoid Manila like the plague. I UNDERSTAND YOU ENTIRELY. You can still maintain a relationship with Lay if she shares the same values and tastes like my gf- happy to travel overseas and eventually live back in my home country Australia. That was never going to be the case with your ex- she will always need to be close to her family, so your best move was to get out of that relationship!!! You two can and will make it work!
I agree much what you both are talking about staying in Philippines. Beyond what you are showing on youtube is just a piece of your daily encounter together. So just go on Tom and Lay and have fun together while you can.
Ask Filipinos from Visayas and Mindanao what they think of Manila and Luzon. They are not very complimentary. I've been here 26 years and travelled all over and Manila is not one of my favorite places. As Tom said you should come here to experience the culture. If you like overcrowded and busy expensive places then Manila is for you.
In marriage or any relationship, it's important to remember that it's not all about one person. You have to make space for the other person, just like you would on the road to let another car pass. If you don't, there will be a collision.
Hey Tom, I have visited the Philippines 2 times this year, coming from New Zealand population about 5 million Manila is a whole different world, I love it to visit but could not stay long term, you guys enjoy your travels. 😊
Thailand has many advantages over phillipines but the tourist areas are becoming over populated with long-term stay foreigners and loosing its tropical feeling.

I couldn’t live full time in the PI either but it’s not just the Food. The blackouts,rain,earthquakes and typhoons gets old quickly. Country wide infrastructure is a challenge.

I appreciate it! I've lived there when I was young, but after living in the United States for most of my life, I can relate to the inconveniences in Manila that you talk about. It's hard to adjust to it, although the people are wonderful and admirable as Manila is not easy city to live in. Being young and free is a privilege. It's amazing that you can travel and choose the country you want to live in. I often thought that way too, but I wouldn't know where to start. The thing is that many who believe Tom hates Filipino food have not watched the Roaming Hogan channel where he regularly hung out with locals and ate at local food places. He did not live in a Westernised bubble like most vloggers who are in the country for longer than a 14-30 day holiday. And just because they don't make videos on how they earn money does not mean they rely exclusively on UA-cam payments.
Lay, your physical attributes and personality will make you an asset to any airline industry. Although the salary is mediocre, the benefits will allow you to travel far and wide. It really comes down to your personal preference regarding where you want to be based. If you're someone who loves bopping around islands, is impatient with misunderstandings, and enjoys chatting with locals all day, the Philippines is a good choice as everyone there speaks English so no language barrier. That's if language matters to you the most. However, if you appreciate the food, convenience, decent infrastructure, and don't mind being patient with misunderstandings or learning another language and culture, then countries such as Thailand would be ideal. Each to their own.

As you know I don't tend to comment all the time, but on this occasion I just wanted to say how well you deal with peoples somewhat negative comments. You both always have a smile on your face and genuine laughter, I love your content and so look forward to your next instalment , I have never had the opportunity to travel to Asia. But when I retire I will be doing so and watching your videos gives me many ideas, In April I spent a couple of weeks in Kenya visiting Nairobi & Mombasa. I had a fantastic time and everyone was so friendly, and as my first solo adventure really took me out of my comfort zone. SOme people have not traveled far and wide and have not experienced other countries and culture so they say what they say. I was born in Manila, raised in the province, got my college degree in Manila, traveled to different countries, I live more than 60 % of my life away from the Philippines. My husband and I were hoping to spend half a year of our retired life in the Philippines but NOT in Manila. I actually looking at the Visayas like Iloilo. It's so true about Manila, so crowded and traffic and takes a day to travel to find what you want. Don't mind the comments Tom....you do you.

I have been to Thailand & the Philippines "long stays", Thailand wins my Vote because of the food, Transport links & convenience of getting things done. I once spent all day in a Bank in the Philippines just sort out some money.
Good that you clarified everything. Sometimes there will be wrong interpretation. As a content creator it's challenging to foresee the comments and clarify the situation immediately in the first video.
Some of the comments I hear seen very extreme guys. It's like some have never ventured out of their own homes or towns. Narrow minded people Tom and Lay. I know what it's like to live on a small island like Camotes Island. Yes it's idyllic n not worry about the traffic but getting sick or injured is another issue. Limited resources at the hospital n they don't have the necessary equipment to look into your injuries so your sent to the mainland there for better health care. Anyway guys. I seriously think that Malaysia and Thailand are uniquely superior in terms of cheap local food. I encourage you to travel to other countries outside of Asia to see if any other countries can compare. I live in the US, and maybe some cities here can compare, but the US is so big and I think it would be hard to find such a city if one even exists in the entire USA. I don't know of any. In the US, cheap local food would be basically the "Chipotle" restaurant chain. It's a million times different from Malaysia.

I'm from Philippines living in Canada and we went to Thailand and they have a better stuff there than my own country some of it. The food , the structure, the hospital. EMS is free. and not all people speak English but stillyou can manage. The rent are cheaper in some places. If something break they'll fix it right away and not to far to travel to look for it. Im sorry it's not that I don't like my country it's just some of it that I disagree. I dont like sweet food. ang customer service pa ay not much good. medjo pag aralin pa kung paano ang customer service gamitin. yong iba hindi marunong sa customer service.

My God! I haven't watched you guys in a while and the first vlog I watch are basement bandits criticizing you! I actually feel sorry for those people who are so negative, they obviously have sad disappointing lives and like to judge people out of jealousy and disappointment in there own lives. Believe me if they could switch places with you they would in a heartbeat. I've been to the Philippines about five times and I do stay from one to two months at a time and I can tell you I will never stay in Manila again after my first month there even though I stayed in Azure Resort style living in Paranaque. I fly into Cebu now it's much better for getting around to island jump too. I know Tom makes decent money off his other channel so he is far from broke. The filipino food is not that good, let's be honest, compared to Thailand there's no comparison. Live your best lives and don't look back! YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE!

good morning guys from Detroit Michigan . USA. I have a recommendation, Perhaps you can live near Manila to avoid the overcrowded streets, but yet you can still go to Manila to get your needs. There are times of the day/weekends, when you can travel to Manila and the traffic is not so bad. Try Lebanese food sometimes..Maybe you will like it, God bless.
I have missed a month or so of your posts. Honestly I got bored with the Ireland trip (so I get it Lay) and I have also started my latest trip; 8 months touring SE Asia. I am in Ubud Bali Indonesia at the moment and will be here until I head to Singapore sometime in December. I travel like you Tom, to immerse myself in the local food and culture. People are stunned when I tell them I am not interested in ATV rides or volcano treks! 😂 I am not interested in dropping $400 usd in a resort drinking myself into a stupor when $400 a MONTH pays for my housing. Is it because I am broke? No, it is because it just doesn’t make good sense. I am not on “vacation” when I travel…I am living my life! Cheers to you two! I get it!

We probably see a fraction of your life on the channel and have no idea of the discussions you may or may not have had, or what financial position you’re in.
I’m here to enjoy the content & support you guys on whatever road you travel down.
Too many are too sensitive and jump to conclusions for sure. My biggest challenge in the Philippines is firstly the lack of quality restaurants and good food, secondly, toxic family/friends and people who are two faced. The foreigner must be patient/respectful/diplomatic while firm and enforcing his boundaries. While the Filipina must have the courage to back up her man and stop the push and pull of selfish/jealous people around her who always have something to say.
Don’t listen to these people, they hate themselves and their life and want everyone else miserable as well. You two are doing a great job and keep up with the great videos.😀
I just love you two. I have a philipina too, she's the best think that ever happened to me. We met in 2017 and she's from Iloilo and I stayed with her in CDO. Respect.

Tom, I can't believe some of the comments. I am like you, I lived 5 years in Bangkok and now 5 years in Philippines ( not including the pandemic) and the NUMBER 1 reason I am here is because of my GF! Thailand ( especially Bangkok my favourite city) is superior in many ways but I chose to live in San Juan La Union because of the beach , great bars , cafes etc ( you will love it here). The Filipino food is very mundane and boring to us foreigners, so here I source the food from all the shops that can satisfy my Foreign taste. We travel overseas a lot and avoid Manila like the plague. I UNDERSTAND YOU ENTIRELY. You can still maintain a relationship with Lay if she shares the same values and tastes like my gf- happy to travel overseas and eventually live back in my home country Australia. That was never going to be the case with your ex- she will always need to be close to her family, so your best move was to get out of that relationship!!! You two can and will make it work!

Ask Filipinos from Visayas and Mindanao what they think of Manila and Luzon. They are not very complimentary. I've been here 26 years and travelled all over and Manila is not one of my favorite places. As Tom said you should come here to experience the culture. If you like overcrowded and busy expensive places then Manila is for you.

In contrast, in Bangkok, you can enjoy a variety of delicious food even with just a small budget. In Manila, however, if you want high-quality food, you often need to dine at more upscale restaurants.

I've been following your vlog since you start dating, and enjoyed your contents. 😊 I've always been curious how life is in Manila, and you both kind of take us through that in a raw perspective. I appreciate it! I've lived there when I was young, but after living in the United States for most of my life, I can relate to the inconveniences in Manila that you talk about. It's hard to adjust to it, although the people are wonderful and admirable as Manila is not easy city to live in.
Being young and free is a privilege. It's amazing that you can travel and choose the country you want to live in. I often thought that way too, but I wouldn't know where to start. I'll just live bicuriously with vlogers like yourselves and enjoy the content you share. Good luck and hope you find the place/country you'll both enjoy.

The thing is that many who believe Tom hates Filipino food have not watched the Roaming Hogan channel where he regularly hung out with locals and ate at local food places. He did not live in a Westernised bubble like most vloggers who are in the country for longer than a 14-30 day holiday.
And just because they don't make videos on how they earn money does not mean they rely exclusively on UA-cam payments.
Lay, your physical attributes and personality will make you an asset to any airline industry. Although the salary is mediocre, the benefits will allow you to travel far and wide. I also love your attitude about the illogical /negative comments. They're also entertaining and add to your numbers. See you in Thailand.

It really comes down to your personal preference regarding where you want to be based. If you're someone who loves bopping around islands, is impatient with misunderstandings, and enjoys chatting with locals all day, the Philippines is a good choice as everyone there speaks English so no language barrier. That's if language matters to you the most. However, if you appreciate the food, convenience, decent infrastructure, and don't mind being patient with misunderstandings or learning another language and culture, then countries such as Thailand would be ideal. Each to their own.
Many people do not have the ability to travel! So keep doing what you love and have fun😊

Hey you two, I always enjoy both your honesty and down to earth attitude to life. As you know I don't tend to comment all the time, but on this occasion I just wanted to say how well you deal with peoples somewhat negative comments. You both always have a smile on your face and genuine laughter, I love your content and so look forward to your next instalment , I have never had the opportunity to travel to Asia. But when I retire I will be doing so and watching your videos gives me many ideas, In April I spent a couple of weeks in Kenya visiting Nairobi & Mombasa. I had a fantastic time and everyone was so friendly, and as my first solo adventure really took me out of my comfort zone.

SOme people have not traveled far and wide and have not experienced other countries and culture so they say what they say. I was born in Manila, raised in the province, got my college degree in Manila, traveled to different countries, I live more than 60 % of my life away from the Philippines. My husband and I were hoping to spend half a year of our retired life in the Philippines but NOT in Manila. I actually looking at the Visayas like Iloilo. It's so true about Manila, so crowded and traffic and takes a day to travel to find what you want. Don't mind the comments Tom....you do you.

Good that you clarified everything. Sometimes there will be wrong interpretation. As a content creator it's challenging to foresee the comments and clarify the situation immediately in the first video.
Some of the comments I hear seen very extreme guys. It's like some have never ventured out of their own homes or towns. Narrow minded people Tom and Lay. I know what it's like to live on a small island like Camotes Island. Yes it's idyllic n not worry about the traffic but getting sick or injured is another issue. Limited resources at the hospital n they don't have the necessary equipment to look into your injuries so your sent to the mainland there for better health care. Anyway guys. Hi Tom and Lay, this video was amazing and you responded to the comments so well. But I would like to try to offer you some perspective. I seriously think that Malaysia and Thailand are uniquely superior in terms of cheap local food. I encourage you to travel to other countries outside of Asia to see if any other countries can compare. I live in the US, and maybe some cities here can compare, but the US is so big and I think it would be hard to find such a city if one even exists in the entire USA. I don't know of any. In the US, cheap local food would be basically the "Chipotle" restaurant chain. It's a million times different from Malaysia.

I'm from Philippines living in Canada and we went to Thailand and they have a better stuff there than my own country some of it. The food , the structure, the hospital. EMS is free. and not all people speak English but stillyou can manage. The rent are cheaper in some places. If something break they'll fix it right away and not to far to travel to look for it. Im sorry it's not that I don't like my country it's just some of it that I disagree. I dont like sweet food. ang customer service pa ay not much good. medjo pag aralin pa kung paano ang customer service gamitin. yong iba hindi marunong sa customer service.

My God! I haven't watched you guys in a while and the first vlog I watch are basement bandits criticizing you! I actually feel sorry for those people who are so negative, they obviously have sad disappointing lives and like to judge people out of jealousy and disappointment in there own lives. Believe me if they could switch places with you they would in a heartbeat. I've been to the Philippines about five times and I do stay from one to two months at a time and I can tell you I will never stay in Manila again after my first month there even though I stayed in Azure Resort style living in Paranaque. I fly into Cebu now it's much better for getting around to island jump too. I know Tom makes decent money off his other channel so he is far from broke. The filipino food is not that good, let's be honest, compared to Thailand there's no comparison. Live your best lives and don't look back! YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE!

good morning guys from Detroit Michigan . USA. I have a recommendation, Perhaps you can live near Manila to avoid the overcrowded streets, but yet you can still go to Manila to get your needs. There are times of the day/weekends, when you can travel to Manila and the traffic is not so bad. Try Lebanese food sometimes..Maybe you will like it, God bless.
I have missed a month or so of your posts. Honestly I got bored with the Ireland trip (so I get it Lay) and I have also started my latest trip; 8 months touring SE Asia. I am in Ubud Bali Indonesia at the moment and will be here until I head to Singapore sometime in December. I travel like you Tom, to immerse myself in the local food and culture. People are stunned when I tell them I am not interested in ATV rides or volcano treks! 😂
I am not interested in dropping $400 usd in a resort drinking myself into a stupor when $400 a MONTH pays for my housing. Is it because I am broke? No, it is because it just doesn’t make good sense. I am not on “vacation” when I travel…I am living my life!
