This race is why Atlanta stayed with its surface for so long. I remember back then I was coming home from school and got to see the last 20 laps of the race.
I remember driving on the interstate through Kentucky that evening, listening to the radio on a sketchy AM/FM signal. I had to pull over at a rest stop to make sure I kept the signal and compose myself in the name of road safety to hear the end of the broadcast.
Incidentally, the race with the highest field win total in history was the 1986 Coca-Cola 600. The field had a combined total of 973 wins and 30 championships. It was David Pearson's next to last race, had basically all of the old guard running, plus rare appearances from future stars like Martin and Jarrett. More recently, the fall Texas race in 2005 had 915 wins and 26 championships. That was thanks to having Hamlin and Truex in their pre-rookie runs, plus Elliott and Terry Labonte in their part-time schedules, as well as Rusty in his last season.
This was an awesome video! I would love to see some more in-depth recaps of historic races if you're ever up to do it again. I'm sure this was a TON of work.
My mind always goes back to the 2007 Goody's 500 at Martinsville, I was there and almost saw my fav driver Jeff Gordon win but Jimmie spoiled it for me. Still one of my personal favorite finishes of all time
Addendum: Assuming this was done before Joey Logano’s championship last night. By my count, yesterday should now account for 24 championships (and counting) among this roster. 7: Jimmie Johnson 4: Jeff Gordon 3: Tony Stewart 2 (2 drivers): Logano, Kyle Busch 1 (6 drivers): Bobby Labonte, Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr. Haven't counted the race wins either, but assuming this would likely put the combined win total of these drivers at 791 given that Logano's championship was also the result of a win.
If memory serves, that was a Racing-Reference original nickname. We called him that because from '08-'10, Reutimann was basically carrying MWR single-handedly.
The best cot race was the race at alanta better Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson when the cars actually had plenty of power and wire out track surface and shows what a real wheelman means

The greatest race will result in the greatest NBR video.
This Jimmie vs Jeff Gordon Battle was so Damn Awesome to watch. And this is coming from a JJ and Gordon Fan

Really cool, thank you
As you know, I thought that race was awesome. Sideways at 180 mph a master class in car control.
Also no stage racing.
My 2 all-time favorite Cup drivers!
Too bad I didn’t watch it because I had a family trip to Universal and Disney
What's amazing is this track configuration is still faster than the current configuration
And still have better racing then too

This race would be more talked about I feel like if it wasn't on a Tuesday and people had watched it live
I was expecting a Tree style roast fest of the 'greatest' race.
I am pleasently surprised

Great choice. Amazing to watch these two "friendly" rivals duke it out...What legends! Sideways half the time. Great racing.
19:45 - Dodge never should of left “NASCAR”
Great video. Lifelong Gordon fan. I actually watched the full race of this on youtube a month or so ago. Also greatly Allen Bestwick in the booth
Been binge watching all of your videos. Absolutely loving 'em, keep up the good work!
I was at this race when I was a kid. Best excused absence ever
This was good, but the 2008 fall Dover race was pretty good too. I think thats the best CoT race imo.

Jeff Gordon FTW
4:48 - I wish “THESE COT CAR’S WERE STILL” NASCAR’s “GO TO” !!!!!!
Great video. Keep them coming.
We talk about JIMMAY and Jeff battle but what about kyle and Jeff that was crazy too
To me, I think one of the best PLATE races ever in the COT era was either 2009 Aaron’s 499 or the ‘09 Coke Zero 400.
10:55 the franchise,is that from the arrons commercial?? Trying so hardto remember lol
If memory serves, that was a Racing-Reference original nickname. We called him that because from '08-'10, Reutimann was basically carrying MWR single-handedly.
The only franchise I know of is Shane Douglas in ECW
Great video sir
Great video!!!!!! Just like aways amazing work!
I also really love this race. I don't know if it's the greatest race, however it is my favorite race
I miss the races in the C.O.T. car. They could actually pass without getting screwed by dirty air
Huge Gordon fan! I think Jeff said not today Jimmie! Jimmie was so good it wasn't good for sport.
More fans on a 2011 Tuesday than 2022 Sundays at Atlanta
Too bad that tropical storm pushed it to Tuesday and I had to be back at school 🙄🙄🙄
I did not see the race because I was at Universal Studios Hollywood with my family
Back when racing was good at Atlanta
What's the name of the first song?
Much better races during this time. Nothing exciting besides restarts. There are definitely better races durung the COT era
And they kill the track by not repaving then no more awesome finishes then an awful restrictor track.
id say that the 2022 coke 600 was one of the greatest of all time. Or am i just crazy?
It was a good race and a crash fest, most crash fests are boring except for the crashes.
Gordon showing JJ who was the better driver
The best cot race was the race at alanta better Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson when the cars actually had plenty of power and wire out track surface and shows what a real wheelman means
290th
This race was mid and you know it. Everyone knows that the 2018 Coca-Cola 600 was better.
Unfunny
Great video but I can’t get over how you call it the “cot” instead of C o T.
