I met Rick after the 2023 Indianapolis 500 gala dinner. Had a lovely 5 minute chat with him when I thanked him for coming over to the UK in 1978 and enthralling the many with their presence.
I told him that I was a Brands Hatch marshal at that time and enjoyed every second USAC was there. Rick is a most gracious fellow!

Great interview, I believe this was “the best” time in racing period. Rick made it look easy and did it with class.

probably the best driver at Indy in the history of the 500, Vukie is right up there, Al Unser sr probably the smartest driver, Sam Hornish could have followed Meras until the stupid IDIOT goes to nashit!

This is awesome! Thanks for doing it and to Rick for sharing all these stories of a legendary life and career. I was a huge CART/Indy Car fan as a kid and lucky for me that was the Golden Era, which is still great to watch today, some of the best racing ever, anywhere. And all the great of the time (Mears, Rahal, Mario and Michael Andretti, Big Al and Little Al, Danny Sullivan, Fittipaldi etc) were gentleman too. A different time...

My introduction to IndyCar racing as a child was Mears 1982 Gould Charge. I don't know where I saw it back then I just remember I fell immediately in love with that car & paint scheme, I didn't know anything about Rick or IndyCar racing. It was a couple years later when he got hurt in Canada that I got an understanding of who he was and what IndyCar racing was & I was a diehard fan right away. I do believe that had the crash at Sanair not happened, he wins at least 10 to 20 more races & potentially 2 more CART PPG Cups. I was also sad for Danny in 88, the Miller High Life scheme is my all time favorite & it was a tearjerker when he hit the wall that day BUT I was happy Rick was able to win that. The 88 chassis was a very beautiful chassis, it very well shoulda won all 3 500 mile races that season. The 92 crash was scary & like everyone else, I also thought that was what led to the retirement announcement & I would have to say that the day Rick made that announcement had to have been the absolute saddest day in IndyCar history where a fatality was not involved. We miss you out there Rick even still 30 plus years later, I remember some minor rumors going around back in 94 that they were gonna see about getting Rick into a car just for Indy so he could run the BEAST & I was hoping but it was just that a minor rumor. I DO think had he drove in that race that he could have won it...

Not sure like if an editor failed to show up or what, came off rather unprofessional or amateurish. You have one of the greatest Indy drivers sitting down, which he rarely does and lights flickering, talking about someone who couldn’t make it, random pauses with direction. Rick was amazing but not sure why he agreed to this with so many professional options out there.

I don’t think you understand what’s going on here. This interview is nothing short of a pure blessing. This is nearly 4 hours, four freaking hours of Rick Mears, unedited, unfiltered, talking about his entire racing career. Try to find this anywhere else on the Internet, there’s nothing like it. I’ve watched this video several times from start to finish because in a strange way, the way this interview is being presented it almost feels like I’m sitting there with Rick.
It really is mind blowing how there is always somebody out there who just can’t see things for what they are and find something, anything to complain about.
Just enjoy this video for what it is and be grateful that it’s here for you to enjoy.
