Being 26 years old, I unfortunately missed a lot of opportunity to see RUSH as I discovered them towards the end of their career. But the 1 show I did see, which was during their R40 tour in the Nationwide Arena in Columbus Ohio, was the best live show I have ever seen. Literally EVERYONE was there. Like you had Grandma and Grandpa there, you had mom and dad there, and you had the sons and the daughters there. You literally had the entire family completely engaged to the show and responding to whar Geddy was singing. It was truly an unforgettable live show. They were unlike any other band out there man. Working Man was off their first album and it was the song that first got them radio exposure (in Cleveland) and a record deal. It was a blues rocker with a lot of jamming in it. It became a regular in their concerts and they loved to have fun with it. I saw them at least 30 or more since '77, and it was ALWAYS a crowd favorite!

If you'd like an explanation for "Sausage Time", do a UA-cam search for "rush time machine intro". It will be titled "Great Rush Full Intro Spirit of Radio Time Machine Tour HD Marvelous". The thumb nail for the video should show a drum head that has RASH instead of RUSH printed on it, and in smaller print over that, "The 'Real' History of Rush". It's the video that was played on the stage screen for several minutes before the boys actually hit the stage, playing "Spirit of Radio". After the first intermission, they play another video before they return to the stage and play "Tom Sawyer" plus the rest of the Moving Pictures album. These videos show that they could have had a career as comedic geniuses, if they had quit music early on.

I'm sorry you never got to see RUSH. A good as the recordings and videos are, there was something magical at the live shows. My first ever concert was a RUSH show in 1977 and managed twelve shows over the years and each one was wonderful. I'll put in another pitch for "Manhattan Project" and raise you a "Hemispheres" (c'mon, an epic
that spans two albums!) Another commentor suggested a live video of "The Garden" which is a beauty as well (one of Alex's best solos IMHO) Thanks for doin what you do and spreading smiles.

Someone else may have already mentioned this in the comments, but Rush liked to dip their toes into different musical genres. Like The Police, they seemed to especially enjoy reggae vibes.
I recommend "The Spirit Of Radio" for a reaction. As with EVERY song by Rush, it would probably be best to start with a lyric video of the studio version, just to appreciate the poetry of The Professor. Then the version with animation is REALLY excellent. And then wrap it up with the live version from Toronto where they do a "Paint It Black" intro, and Alex rips open a new hole into The Upside Down when he absolutely SHREDS the guitar solo!

Both of you probably wondering why Rush recorded this concert live in Cleveland? Back in the mid 70's, Rush had a hard time to break in USA's music scene. Then a radio station with callsign- WMMS "The Buzzard" started playing Rush songs on the radio. Rush never forgotten that WMMS helped them in this country.

  • @garylogan3640

Working Man was Rush's first big break, Donna Halper, a Cleveland DJ started playing it and it picked up enough popularity to get the band noticed and signed to a record label. The original track was pure hard rock, the reggae intro was introduced as a way to change up a song that the band had been performing since at least 1974.

Heyyyy… it’s time for “MORE USELESS RUSH TRIVIA FROM KELLY!!”
If you’ve wondered why Rush has clothes driers onstage, it began as a beef between Geddy and Alex that Alex was using too many amplifiers on his side of the stage, while Geddy’s side of the stage only had ONE bass amp… so as a joke, Geddy brought in 4 clothes driers and had them placed on his side to balance things out., unbeknownst to Alex before the show…. Alex found it so humorous that it stuck and became the new stage setup.

During my high school days of 1976-1980, I was in 3 different rock bands, in 3 different states over those years, and EVERY high school rock band included "Working Man" as part of their set! This is the song that "put them on the map" in the US, but they were really discovered in Cleveland. This song was on their first album, and the drummer back then was John Rutsey (RIP.) John only appeared on their debut album. Needless to say, there was no reggae anywhere on that original album. In case you weren't aware, while the members of Rush were amazing musicians, the band were best friends, practically family, and they all had incredible senses of humor, so having fun (like doing working man like this,) was pretty typical. They were so funny, though Alex went off-the-scale to "goofy!" Check out Alex's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction speech! It's on youtube, and it's hilarious!

The main staple song off their first album who at that point had drummer John Rutsey. Neil Peart took over on the tour of their first record because Geddy and Alex wanted to play more progressive rock and Rutsey was more blues rock. Rutsey also had juvenile diabetes of which he succumbed to later in life. RUSH STAPLE SINCE 1974!

The little thing at the end was a special tribute to a song that did not appear on one of their albums. This was the closing song of the concert, and it was a "concept" concert ... they began with their newest music and went backwards to their first album. As they did so, they changed the stage behind them to reflect what it looked like at the time of the song. The last sixteen bars was the earliest song they've ever played on stage, as it did not appear on an album.

This was Rush's "new" live take on an old favorite from Rush's debut album that was done just for this concert tour to give the long time fans a fresh approach. But you MUST also listen to the original studio version of this song which is every bit, as incredible, both in different ways. The original studio version is very Led Zeppelin like and Alex goes insane on his guitar in it as well, again, in a totally different way.
One thing about the original studio version though is that it was recorded while Rush still had their original drummer John Rutsey. He's incredible on this song too, so you won't be disappointed, but he's no Neil Peart. So you will also have to listen to a live version of Working Man when Neil Peart is drumming, but sticks closer to the original studio version, but probably has extended solos from Alex and Neil, if not all three.
Also, an bit of trivia on a side note; you may remember that Geddy points and calls the audience "Best audience ever." A thing about Geddy and Rush in general is that they NEVER before ever said that to another audience at another show. And Geddy commented in an interview once that he never did that at a show because he saw other artist do it all the time with multiple audiences and it was very disingenuous to him. So when he said it this one time he really meant it (though by default as explained below), and hard-core Rush fans know this well. He did it at this specific venue though as a bit tongue-and-cheek too, which the audience knew, because they knew he never said that to any audience before, and because it was really in honor of the fact that it was the city of Cleveland and it's Radio station that introduced them to the United States and lead to their big break getting a record deal with Mercury Records and being picked by Gene Simmons of KISS, also on the Mercury label, to be their opening act on Kiss's big tour! So Cleveland has a special place in Rush's heart and Rush's fans hearts too.

Having big fun watching you two listen to Rush. Such brilliance being discovered is a true hoy. Now, I don't want to distract you, but there is a rather unknown, un-reacted to super-group that recorded a beautiful song named "Kayla" and for obvious reasons, I think you should hear it. The band is Flying Colors abd features Steve Morse (five-time winner of Best Overall Guitarist in Guitar Player Magazine) from Deep Purple, Dixie Dregs, Kansas and his own band; Dave LaRue (Steve Morse Band & Joe Satriani) on bass; Mike Portnoy (from Dream Theater and just about every band on the planet); Neil Morse (Spock's Beard founder plus many other bands) and Casey McPherson as singer and guitar. Had the privilege of seeing them for the first time on the permanent waves tour and the last with the R40 tour... Five times in total. And they put on an epic performance every time. Washing machines, time machines, rotisserie chickens instead of a regular bass amp rig. And then there is the back screen. They use it so effectively. I would suggest a live version of Tom Sawyer with the South Park introduction. When you see it you will know. Also some of the other videos they play after the intermission to introduce the next song. Absolutely hilarious. As is their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction speech. Alex lifeson will absolutely crack you up. Keep up the great work.🍻🎶🇨🇦

I was there. Floor on Geddy's side. My favorite of 20 times seeing them since I can relive it! And the start of this song is just something they did live for fun.

Watching your channel for the 1st time I think lol. I'm a super big RUSH fan. I've got all their CDs, seen them multiple times in concert before Neil passed away and love watching reaction videos for them, so thanks for this video. I'm from their hometown city of Toronto also.
You guys are awesome reactors and great to see how you react to their musical talent.
I once got up to the front row of a concert for them, right in front of Alex Lifeson ( the guitarist ) and it was a highlight in my long life. Also Neil always did a drum solo in each concert I saw, which is something everyone should experience at least once ( on TV now since Neil is gone R.I.P. )
Finally just wanted to compliment the lady reactor ( I think the name was Kayla ) as she was so full of energy in the reaction, which made it so fun....and she's super beautiful too!!❤
    Thanks and keep smiling👍🇨🇦

Lifelong member of the Rush army. Loving the reactions. On board with Natural Science for the next one. Future suggestion is "R30 Overture into Spirit of Radio". AKA the "Best Intro Ever". Another army that travels well is Tool. If you're not familiar, "The Pot" is a great place to start.

Just fyi, you are great at your pauses. It seems to happen quite a bit at a transition, which is what most people want. It's hard to plan for breaks with a band like Rush because you don't really know when the solos end or the changes occur.

Ahhh The Holy Trinity. I've seen them over twenty times and they've never disappointed. So much to choose from with over 20 studio albums. I think you'll like some of their newer stuff. Some of my favorites are Ghost Rider live in Rio, Working Them Angels, Half The World, and Headlong Flight. Those just came to mind.
I was born and raised in NorCal, and I must be the only one who has never heard "hella", because I've heard people say that before about it being a NorCal term🤔🤷🏻‍♂️
    Anyway, enjoyed the reaction ✌️

You've got to cut them some slack on this one because it was at the end of an almost 3 hour show and they are in their late 50's at this point. So they might've slowed down a little. The encore for this tour was La Villa Strangiato followed by Working Man. I see you've now done both! I saw them 27 times between 1984 and 2015. Each one was fantastic. I'd love to see Freewill from the Time Machine Tour. Or Driven from either Rush in Rio or Different Stages.

The studio version of Working Man is straight up a rocking song. And it was a program director in Cleveland for the radio station WMMS that first introduced Rush to America.
You should check out the instrumental YYZ from Rush In Rio. Hearing the crowd singing along to non existing words is simply amazing.

Definitely check out the studio version of Working Man. The reggae opening was unique to this live performance, so the studio version is, of course, the "original". It is the song that launched them on the radio, and Cleveland was the city where it first happened, hence why this performance was so special.

    Next Rush video?
For an instrumental, I suggest "Where's My Thing" live in Dallas. Incredible bass-playing by Geddy Lee, and a fantastic drum solo by Neil Peart. And a great song, of course.
For a video with lyrics, "Natural Science" is great. Not sure which version is best, I like the lyric video of the studio version.

Ya just can't go wrong with Rush. The reason he proclaims "BEST AUDIENCE EVER" is because Cleavland was the first U.S. city where they got time on the radio. Rush shows are always lots of fun, and both my sons have been to several shows, and the younger one was in tears after seeing the film Time Stand Still....their announcement of their retirement :/
To go a bit deeper, check out Cygnus X-1 where they fly into a black hole, and we had to wait for the next album's release to find out if our hero lives or dies!
Another thing you'd enjoy, along with all us fans, would be to react to one of their documentaries such as The Rise Of Kings, or Rush In Rio! (PLEASE??)

I HIGHLY recommend some quality head phones with the lyrics in front of you and the studio version of their songs FIRST. Then you can appreciate the energy and how closely they match their studio precision playing live. They are true artists. Some of the most creative of my lifetime. You can throw a dart at their discography and really can't go wrong with anything you hit. For something different from what you've heard so far, I might recommend 1985's "The Big Money" or Natural Science from 1980. 1976's "2112" - entire first side of the album is also a classic, as is 1978's "The Trees." Closer to the Heart from 1977 is also a classic. If you want to get "REALLY" crazy, you could do both part's of Cygnus X-1, spanning 2 albums "Book I: The Voyage" from 1977's A Farewell to Kings and Book II: Hemispheres from 1978's "Hemispheres." Then you could run through the "Fear Quadrilogy" which began in 1981 concluded 21 years later ua-cam.com/play/PLHAW90Opzq5BB8myQQStmlfKZPLLzVQjV.html
