I personally know many people who don’t need more than M4/3 sensor. And you’re someone that you need a larger sensor, then you just don’t buy this cameras. Simple as that. This camera will definitely find its client.

But most UA-camrs also film solo, autofocus is absolutely necessary in most scenarios, like vlogging. Making UA-cam videos, making films (kind of) for UA-cam and actual Filmmaking are three absolutely different genres with different approach and different need of equipment and these fields often overlap each other. Like the whole UA-cam cinematic videos concept was introduced to YTbers by filmmakers. I'm just greatful to all the things I got to learn cause of this platform. No conflicts, only Peace & Love should prevail.

@@Abhshkraj There is no real need for AF if you are shooting yourself for youtube. Single point and an app to control the camera can get almost everything done and some handheld closeups of products can cover everything else.
Af is really only necessary if you 1. Have a stationary camera, 2. Want to just throw things in front of the camera so that it focuses on them instead of shooting proper b-roll. 3. Move A LOT yet still want to maintain shallow dof (most likely because you cheaped out on lights and want to use a large aperture to make up for a lack of light)
My favorite is how that talk about critical focus and how it matters more and more with higher resolutions. It's as if they aren't happy unless they can make out every single pore in someone's skin and stitch in their shirt. They don't seem to accept or even realize that almost all media is consumed on phones, most video is streamed at like 480p because the 4g or 5g sucks everywhere on earth, and people aren't punching in to look at the smallest details. They talk about using the higher resolutions to crop in and reframe footage and such, but then you are just throwing away image quality because you didn't plan your shots properly.
Ultimately the camera is a tool, and image quality reached the point where humans no longer cared to notice improvements when 1080p was invented.

I got the Panasonic GH6 3 months ago. For $3000, since the 12-60mm lens came with it, it’s a good value. Especially for videos. I see it as a video camera first before it does photography, it can do that too and take nice stills, I didn’t buy it for photography. It does uncompressed ProRes videos, no other camera does that that I know of. The Sony a7siii doesn’t record that at all. I don’t use it myself, not economically feasible for me at the moment to do it. SSDs are still expensive and CFexpress cards are even more expensive right now to do that. So I’m forced to still edit off HDD to get a 5TB drive, those are slow when you’re talking editing 300mbps videos that I shoot with the GH6. It’s mainly a future proof camera, I’ll have it for a very long time, so ultimately, I will be able to do that ProRes mode as those things get cheaper and readily available. Sometimes, a crop sensor is a good thing, the subject can look closer, depending on what you’re looking to shoot. For workouts, I can use a 7-14mm lens and I don’t have to be so far from the camera to get a wide, close up shot of what I’m doing in the video.

    (Long read, but experienced use)
First, great review and perspective! I could've bet money which one was which. I have a GH4 that I've been using for so long (2014) as a military videographer. I've been waiting for this GH6. To preface, I own a 5D M III, RX100 M IV, and the GH4. I love the GH series. The differences: The GH series gives people a yellower skin tone than Canon. I knew what Canon was because it had the best color. I use my 5D mainly for bokeh shots and sitdown interviews (chef's kiss). The subject's face on the GH6 had more noise and was less sharp. Both your Canon and Sony are sharper and have better depth of field, but not enough for me to pay the extra.
The best part of the GH series is what it offers for the videographer's experience. The camera body layout and in-camera menu display are the BEST. It's simple and made for video shooting, saving so much time. My GH4 is the best run-and-gun camera, and the build is durable of all my cameras. Nothing has come apart, fallen off, scratched, or broken from this GH4. Whereas my 5D became easily scratched, and somehow the menu button was hard to press from my dried sweat. The menu is not bad but sucks compared to the GH4. I know my RX100 is a different form factor, but it gave me a glimpse of how bad the Sony menus are laid out 💀. Sony is so expensive in general. I opened the battery compartment one day, and two pieces that clipped the battery into place just fell out 🥲. There is no instant in-camera slow-mo mode. I've put my GH4 through worse than these two other cameras. I had to whip it out on speed boats, helicopters, and I've run through sand, rain, and muddy fields. It's been 100% intact since 2014. If you were to tell me that the day I opened that box and held it for the first time, I'd be hella surprised. The battery...lasts FOREVER. I can't say that for the GH6 though, cuz they changed the battery.
I could care less about AF. As a filmmaker, I was brainwashed to manually focus to make sure it's done correctly. I've never been in a situation where I needed AF. AF seems more useful for vlogging selfie-style.
The dynamic range is the #1 thing I care about Panasonic improving significantly. I DON'T like what they're offering. The GH series already has a noise problem, and bumping up the dynamic range slightly by compromising an increased ISO is not the answer for me. 2000 ISO...no. The other improvements I need are correcting the yellow skin tone and increasing low-light capability. I see the GH6 low light is better than my GH4 for sure, but who knows by how much when I use it.
My main worry from all these reviews so far from looking at the footage is the white horizontal streaks I see here and there from bright light 😬.

I have been c200 , Nikon D810 , D500 shooter . I got into an accident with c200 and had to sell it unfortunately. So looking to upgrade my gears totally, gonna sell my Nikon gears soon. What’s ironic is that a version of Panasonics Gh6 camera is actually Netflix approved. That isn’t true for any other handheld camera on the market to my knowledge. Also, Just an amateur opinion. But I’ve noticed that bokeh in someways hides from the true test of image quality in the sense that things look sharper in focus when the background is blurred. What I can appreciate about the GH6 is that the quality x cinematic image you get from it looks accurate x isn’t hiding behind the bokeh that technically fools the eyes. Studying neuroscience before getting into film I learned a lot about how the brain compensates with illusion in terms of what we see. I’d be interested to see how the Gh6 performs in low light. I’ve also learned that the Gh6 is amazing in terms of color grading. Great review!

At first I thought I could detect more noise in the GH6 shots, but then they showed even more shots where the R5 and A7SIII had similar noise to the GH6. It's crazy how the GH6 is pulling serious weight going up against full frame cameras like this. I don't own one, but I understand now why my local camera store said the GH6's were flying off the shelves and are back-ordered for months worth of deliveries. Despite any possible auto-focus issues, these are really solid cinema cameras at a relatively low price.

I loved the review and I love that Panasonic does ProRes internally. The issue for me with the comparison is the environment (perfectly lit scene). Attach some high end cinema lenses and focus wise the $2200 GH6 is on a level playing field to the $3500+ a7s II and R5. I picked C as being the Panasonic, mainly due to the depth of field. Were they are shot at the same T-Stop? I know you only had the GH6 for a few days, but did you think it recorded greater detail than the a7s III? The R5 would be the resolution king out of those 3, however record limits and overheating is just too much frustration for me.

@@HugoWill I used to beat myself for choosing the “wrong camera” because of its “horrible dynamic range,” but after using my R5 in the real world (and watching countless videos of people comparing cameras) for several months, I’m not convinced that the extra dynamic range of 1-1.5 stops from competitors is a deal breaker. Most people using these hybrid cameras are not doing Hollywood shoots or $10,000 gigs. They are shooting weddings or small commercials, in which I’d argue that the extra dynamic range wouldn’t matter. If I wanted max dynamic range for bigger productions, I wouldn’t even bring an R5 or an A7SIII; I’d rather bring dedicated cinema cameras for their 15+ stop of dynamic range and better audio inputs and such.
Long story short, I think cameras have gotten so good that youtubers have to find reasons to complain for likes and views. The R5 is an amazing camera, even for video, but it won’t compete with dedicated video cameras, and neither will it’s competitors such as the A7Siii and the S1H. There are far more things that make a dedicated video camera more usable than these hybrid cameras than Dynamic range. I’d argue anyone that does film work knows this already.

There are also a lot of people who aren’t making money yet, and this camera could be all savings to buy a tool that will help them step up and learn more.

@@HugoWill I agree again. That's why they are in different price sections. If we skip the budget part and we compare them just to see which one is better to get I get to the point I will trust Sony. Even if it doesn't have 120fps, 10 bit but it has phase detection AF or even without at least - true full frame experience for better low-light capabilities. That opens up so much situations that you can use and get colorized compositions where the MFT just dies. I was a user of Panasonic g7 and the only part that I liked was nice colors in a good light situation & easy to edit. I've then went to a7sII and that was a huge difference even without phase-detect af. But overall when I went for a Sony the things just became on another level. What about a7c.. still would go for it instead of gh6. I am pretty sure I will prefer even a6600 than gh6. I mean MFT & bad AF in that price range is that what just lost me in 2022 no matter if it is 10 bit n offers 120fps. But that's my personal experience. Now I am a happy owner of a7sIII and I know that I won't need upgrade in next 3 to 6 years just because it offers everything a solo video producer needs.

@@CHTFilms If that adjust the conditions you shot, it's perfect. As a filmmaker I couldn't care less about autofocus. And since all the shots I do are in controlled enviroment, low light is never an issue. Plus that I can throw a Speed booster, have a even larger field of view than a super 35 and 10 bit amazing quality. With the 1500 I save from Sony I can buy more ligths to control and shape the enviroments I shot in. Again, it's all about what you use it for. I can't even think of a situation that I will need to crank my iso to 12800 hahaha... not even with an ARRI.. so that comparision for me will make not difference. Now that IBIS which is probably the bet so far in a mirrorles camera, and all the codec features, those are real case uses for me.

lame comparison. the bokeh seems small on pana. you should use the same equivalent to FF lenses. the lens use in pana was cheap.

I am sorry, Hugo, not gonna lie, but this video was pretty bad. I honestly hated it -- you need to learn how to shoot in 4K quality better. The lighting and angle made it horrible. Way too flashy. I think the A7SIII is the best, period. Cut the rambling.
The color grading does not even follow typical realistic human eyes. By the way, what Picture Profile did you use? I am trying to figure out the best one for low light.

Totally disagree here....this was a very good comparison video, proving that the image quality is very close to its Full Frame competitors.
