Monitor Latency Test: SDI Cable Delays | Sony, SmallHD, Osee, Atomos, Holyland, Seetec

In this video, I test the monitor latency on several different monitors including Sony, SmallHD, OC, Atomos, Hollyland, and Seetec, all connected directly via SDI cable to the camera. After watching wireless video delay test by a Filmmakers Academy hosted by Shane Hurbut, I wanted to see how much delay these monitors might introduce on their own. While we often assume delays come from wireless ...

In this behind-the-scenes look at the making of our short film, we had no crew-just the DP, director, and actors. With only seven hours to pull it all together, I handled everything from camera, lenses, lights, to sound. Despite the tight schedule, we captured some striking visuals and creative angles, heavily inspired by the style of Mr. Robot. Watch how we navigated the challenges of a minima...

He also sounds like a gossiper whom the others avoid. So now his continues his laidback excuse at the coffee machine waiting for any bait to listen to his complaints about the corporate system rather than appreciating his job and do it well. Well, his excuse is the culture shock.
This honestly isnt really a punishment. its free money
So we saw they didn't take his phone away from him, bad move. See there is this thing called mobile data and phone chargers........ Yeah needless to say this wouldn't work as a punishment on young people.
Are you using the joystick when panning or are you simply twisting your wrist? Thanks!
@@Phocasa twisting arm. Joystick only for tilt ups and downs
@@HugoWill Thank You! I'm just starting out. Your stuff is classy. I like your style more than the trendy ramps and multiple quick cuts I see all the time. Reminds me of the movie Space Odyssey.
@@Phocasa thanks. yes, speed ramps get old. and whoever is watching the video are actually interesting in viewing the property, not cool editing tricks.
This felt like solitary confinement being in prison…. Even on his lunch break no one could talk to him. Actually I myself felt close in, isolated from everyoneI….. absolutely enjoyed this and the actor was very impressive too.❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Is your film critical of Japanese culture? It certainly seems to be.
Very helpful especially the 8k discussion
So it was punishment .. how come I don’t get it
I felt boredom and depression and claustrophobia immense rage and darkness any hopelessness with jarring emotions and honestly- I don’t think I would have made it through the first day.if I also had a family mortgage etc I would have tried to make it work somehow by going through the boxes and reading or sorting whatever was in them but This is something that would have definitely made me get on that rooftop with that guy. This felt so real. Like it was me who was in there. Brilliant work! Bravo!
Thank you 🙏
She’s awesome ❤🔥
Thanks for this test. What kind of camera is feeding the monitors?
@@modernhumantv red Komodo
@@HugoWill Thank you! While I've not tested the Komodo myself, all camera's SDI ports do introduce some latency, before the monitor and / or wireless TX/RX. The Alexa family is apparently the best at less than 20ms, which is what I read online, that's less than 1 frame of delay, if true. I tested my Varicam LT and I'm getting around 30-50ms, when I run in 60fps VF SDI mode. But I've heard Sony Venice 1/2 have around 4 frames, which would be around 160ms. For reference at 23.98FPS 1 frame = 41.70ms. Very happy that you compared Atomos to SmallHD, because I'm thinking of getting one of those and wanted to see if it was better than Atomos and it appears so. Anyway, Just some thoughts. Thanks again for doing the test.
@@modernhumantv interesting, I haven't thought about cameras actually could also send delayed signal. but makes sense. gotta test different cameras one day too

So true ' Culture shock is real.' Especially for those not accustmed to much traveling.
This premise reminded me of a documentary on Japan's prison system and how, as punishment while being held, you have to sit in the middle of a room with reading and writing materials (which are taken away if you move/stand). Honestly, things could be worse and for an introvert, it's not that bad.
so the books are in front of you but you arent allowed to read them?
tbh i wouldve just brought a hard drive or flash drive full of whatever entertainment just to pass the day. Catch up on shit you haven't been able to watch or learn while working PERMITTED that you can do what he can in that room alone.
Wow, this is amazing! How haven't more people seen this?
Well, the yt algorithm has been pumping vids like 6-7 years ago, so with the rate it's going, in about 1-2 years I'd say this vid will pop off. It was super well done and hope I get the recommendation in 2 years to rewatch it.
Good work bud.
For other viewers watching in a browser, use the , and . keys to move frame by frame to check the latency :)
Pretty much they all had a minimum 2 frame delay, with the monitors called slower being 3 frames.
great idea. thanks
This video is so good - I keep coming back to it for reference. Thank you!

Great! I would love to know your thoughts on camera placement/height of camera/various other methods of shooting comedy shows - I have recently gone on tour filming comedy and I was about 60% happy with the outcome - lots of unknowns to contend with
that very depends on a venue, the show itself and amount of cameras. but each camera has to support another. but as generic setup is two in the middle (wide and close), two on sides (closeups-medium), and then optionally camera on stage, camera behind, roaming camera and etc.
Hey I have the 6k version but wanted to know what codec do you use most for gigs. When I rented a 4D raw was unlocked but it was long converting 4tB of footage just to use Davinci resolve. But now I have my own I’m thinking if I need it. As I would rather use the money to get the flex and more gear.
@@patrickbaitmen9290 I don’t shoot raw at all since I use Davinci. I use a lot ProRes hq. When I use it on movies I shoot at 4444. And for long format recording like events or social media I use h264.
@@HugoWill thanks for swift reply you are not the first to say this but there isn’t many videos out there speaking about this so thank you again. Keep up the dope work.
Sorry one more question. As lens manufacturers have recently affordable and smaller cine lenses I was thinking of buying some cine primes as opposed to renting them. In your opinion and experience which do you feel has the best results “bang for buck”.
@@patrickbaitmen9290 the ones I mentioned would be best: DZO vespid primes and Nisi Athena
@@HugoWill thanks I wasn’t sure if there was much difference between them my rental company only has the dZO so I can’t compare. But thanks for the advice
bro your comparing the 8k to 6k and have no examples lol chilll.................
Agree on your wish list! More codecs and aspect ratios would be great, also in the 8k. I decided to go for the 8k, even though I will probably not use 8k resolution at this point in my career because of limited computer specs and hard drive space, but considering that the price difference isn’t that big when you add a few accessories to the kit like the 17-28, ssd etc. and the improvements with the OPLF filter, the DR expansion mode, no crop in 4K 120p and improved rolling shutter in normal mode made me go for the 8k. Great video!! Would love to see more of you with this camera.
In my country (Belgium), there's a huge price difference… 😅 It’s almost twice the price.. (6k: 6598€ - 8k: 11999€).
I suspected this camera was better than the 8k and you are confirming it. Who needs 8k really and the storage is horrendous. A lot of corporate clients barely manage with 4k, especially when it comes to sending footage by internet. I love that 4th axis stabilisation and ding know why it hasn’t taken off more. If they made a lighter version that would be great.
How was it confirmed when he showed no 8k images. Even the 8k down samples into 4k gives a better image and color science then the 6k. The dynamic range and boost is better an has better lowlight an olpf. So once again how did he confirm the 8k is better also the 8k grain is barely existent at dual iso
👍🏼
Why do you use H.265? I think it works well (not looking very compressed) on my R6 but curious as to why you would choose it specifically.
@@prismcollectionmusic h265 is way better compression, less artifacts, better color retention. h264 is old standard. Half bitrate of h264 is needed for h265 to match the quality
@@HugoWill That makes sense!! I couldn't find information about about it when I looked it up, but it matches what I've observed...
