      So sad to hear your story, glad to hear shows like Voyagers helped you through tough times. I watched it on NBC in 82. Then in syndication then on TV Links. I loved the PSA segment promoting literacy. "Take a voyage to your local library. It's all in books!" I still do. I still do.

    • @joegongora2200
      @joegongora2200 Рік тому

      They were promoting reading for everyone because anyone that loves to read. Is actually living life to the full because it's a privilege to know how to read and write. In those days the Internet didn't exist but one needs to develop the appreciation for reading. At the end of that show they were promoting something positive especially for children. I certainly wished that show would've continued for a couple of more seasons. Perhaps Jon-Erik Hexum might've had a different outcome.

    Voyager's rocked! I loved that show... And I really think it probably could have had a couple more seasons, given the writing improved and a time slot change happened and as far as Jon Erik Hexum goes.. I truly believe he could have done so much more in his career had he lived he was the Channing Tatum of the '80s but with a lot more savvy! This show really really was awesome when you were a kid, it gave everything you wanted to see on TV when you were young, glad you did this video!

    • @paxhumana2015
      @paxhumana2015 5 років тому +5

      He did not burn out, some moron on the props fucked up, Hexum did not know that the fuck up had happened, and he died needlessly, all because someone did not do their job properly. However, because of that incident, as well as the accident that claimed the life of H. B. Halicki, better standards were crafted to prevent needless deaths on movie and television stages and shoots.

    This show was indirectly responsible for my discovery of science fiction literature. I was watching it one day when my father commented that "Phineas Bogg" seemed to be a rip-off-of/homage-to the character "Phileas Fogg" who was the protagonist in Jules Verne's "Around the World in Eighty Days". I was naturally curious, especially since I had never seen my father reading a novel. He showed me his dusty old box of sci fi paper backs, which included not only Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, but Asimov, Clark, Bradbury, Niven, and others. I have not been the same since.

    • @robertbell3765
      @robertbell3765 4 роки тому +6

      This is from memory: The time traveler appeared outside the kid's window in a high rise apartment. He broke through the window to save himself from falling to his death. To protect the kid, his dog lunged at the time traveler and locked onto the time traveler's guide book. In the struggle to get the book free, the time traveler knocked the kid out the window. The time traveler jumped out the window after the kid, grabbed him and traveled into the past to save the kid from falling to his death. The kid's father (I think) was an expert in history and taught him everything he knew about it. The time traveler promised to return the kid to his own time, mostly in an effort to retrieve his guidebook.

    • @christopherjahn2044
      @christopherjahn2044 4 роки тому +4

      That is correct. Phineas Fogg lost his book, which he didn't read, believing he could figure out the stuff on his own. But since he had no grasp of history, he couldn't figure out what the problems were. The kid was a genius who loved history, and travelled with Fogg to help him identify what needed to be corrected. Like the time Edison quit work on the light bulb after the 900th attempt.

      On the first day of my European History class in freshman year our arrogant instructor, a middle-aged Russian-American Ph.D in history, tried to demonstrate to the class just how little we knew about the subject. He said, "I will bet that none of you can tell me what event sparked the beginning of the Thirty Years' War." There were several seconds of silence until I said meekly, "Um, was it the Defenestration of Prague?" Well, IF LOOKS COULD KILL! To his credit, he covered with, "Well, yes, of course YOU knew it, but I wanted to make it clear that nobody ELSE did, you see, that's the point!"

    I recall looking up to Hexum's character as a kid, and was saddened when he died. IIRC he was just pretending to blow his brains out as a gag, sadly unaware that the wadding in the blank can cause serious harm when it's fired at close range. Maybe the stunt people told him and he forgot or maybe they never told him...either way, a tragedy. He may have portrayed a hero in front of the camera, but he was a real life hero in the end when he donated his organs to save the lives of others. If he had lived, I think he would've become one of the great stars of the 80s.

    The kid that was on the show that later became a high school history teacher was a rare sign of Hollywood actually influencing a person in a good way. Also, had Voyagers! aired on a Saturday morning, had its episodes split into two parts to make thirty minute episodes, rather than hour long episodes, and had Donald P. Bellasario come to work on Voyagers! instead of on Quantum Leap a few years later (and thus also potentially leading Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell, as well as the rest of the cast members of that show instead being a part of the Voyagers! cast), then I think that it could have lasted all the way into the 1990s, and especially if you cycled old Voyagers and trainees out, and put new ones in every season.

    I *loved* this show as a kid and was disappointed when it was cancelled. I would really love to see it come back in a reebooted more sophisticated and a bit more adult form. That being said for a good amount of years now I've been able to clearly see the various similarities between 'Voyagers" and a certain other sci fi show....this one from the U.K. (*Doctor Who*). Phineas was *The Doctor*. Jeffrey was his *companion*. The Omni was Phinea's *TARDIS*,and like The TARDIS was unpredictable and malfunctioned. He came from a planet of Voyagers that had the secret of traveling through time (*Time-Lords*) The episode with the Titanic featured a female Voyager (*Romana*). There was an episode where Phineas is put on trial for interferring/screwing up (*The War Games/Trial of A Timelord*) His prosecutor during the trial was an evil Voyager (*The Master*). The evil Voyager had a more advanced state of the art Omni than Phineas' (just like The Master's TARDIS was more sophisticated than The Doctor's) The evil Voyager would later return in an episode about Jack The Ripper when he tried to get revenge against Phineas. Still love this show though ! Gets a thumbs up from me !

    • @jondnz
      @jondnz 2 роки тому

      RE: "He came from a planet of Voyagers" that was a retcon for the TV movie. In the original broadcast Voyagers were actually humans plucked from history by the society of Voyagers in the future. It's more similar to DC's Legends of Tomorrow in that sense. Bogg had actually been a 17 century pirate(If you look as his "standard attire" that seems to fit) It also explains why in the Trial of Phineas episode they let Jeffrey continue on with Bogg as they realise Jeffrey is meant to be a Voyager based on historical evidence, albeit future "historical" evidence

    • @TRANZEURO
      @TRANZEURO 2 роки тому

      @@jondnz Okay then the idea that Phineas came from a planet of Voyagers may have been a retcon but that makes it even worse in that it was retconned to be even *more* like Doctor Who than it already was. I would say the two major differences between Doctor Who and Voyagers was that unlike The Doctor Phineas was not exactly a genius.The other is that in Voyagers they only traveled backwards in time in *Earth* history whereas in Doctor Who they traveled to other planets,space stations in the far future, parallel universes came across aliens etc.

    The only thing about it was how would they know time was wrong? Once the wrong time event happens it becomes the correct time event. They shouldn't know any other way. But that didn't really matter. You just accepted it and enjoyed the adventure.

      @Hannah D yeah, but that's my point. Omni shouldn't know, unless it is like the TVA guarding a sacred timeline. Once the timeline is altered, anyone in the future won't know anything is changed, because the change would become actual history.
