They're misleading on purpose. Diablo 3 sold like 14 Million copies in the 1st months. Lets say they made around 70$ per copy. That would be around 9-10 Million. Good for them. Seeing how many of these live service games are funded based on the microtransactions, it's good to see the game will keep going with good funding which is what I care about.
My biggest problem with the game is that i really like the leveling process and how the classes play, but everytime when i hit max level and my build is more or less pretty viable, then the hard grind begins for pushing the pit or infernal hordes or whatever is the flavor of the season, then i lose interest, because that takes a lot of time and just so i can say "hey i beat max pit levels" and spent hours and hours grinding for better stat rolls isn't enough for me. When they would give me say at pit 65 completion a cool set, and then at 85 and for a 100 clear cool wings, i would play waaaay more and have fun and a sense of accomplishment.

I think there is almost no way Blizzard is not disappointed with those MTX numbers. When you compare it to how much the MTX in Overwatch 1 did and other Acti-Blizz titles do, that's very low. I also don't think the Expansion is going to sell anywhere near as well. I know myself and a lot of other people that bought the base game hoping for a new Diablo experience were disappointed by what we got and have stopped playing. The game is not an RPG. It's an Arcade game that shoehorns in some RPG trappings. It's not what I was looking for at all. And the greed in the cosmetic shop on top of the extremely high base game price is a real disappointment. Especially since the cosmetics you get in game are just awful. The weapons and armor look dumb unless you bust out that credit card to buy something that doesn't look stupid. So $0 spent on MTX for me and I won't be buying the Expansion. We've already heard the team lead dial back on the "Yearly expansions" promise... I don't think D4 is going super well.
Not going to buy the addon on release, it doesn't hype very much and with poe2 and Titan Quest 2 coming out soon I don't think Diablo 4 can hold up lol. I will maybe grab the addon when it is on a dscount which won't take too long considering their base game already got on discount after only 2 months after release. Also the game turning more and more into Diablo 3.5 is making it less and less appealing.
I know I would actually buy a skin if that was the case......then again the last time I even bought a skin in any game was MHW and it was on sale for $1.49 and it was just to have a laugh. The handler walking around in the snow in a bikini while complaining about how cold it is is hilarious to me.....I need help. I just can not easily justify spending any more then that on a skin when any game that adds DLC comes with many more skins (armor and sometimes cosmetics) for less then most games now charge for a single skin. Look at MHW:I EVERY single gear piece you could get in game could be used as layered (cosmetic) armor and cost what $40 (too lazy to look up cost at launch) so why would I spend $20-$30 if not more for A SINGLE SKIN??? Sorry about the rant, got carried away.
If their team said "Hey, we ran the numbers and analyzed the data. We think we could make more money if we made it this price" then they would do it instantly. They know what they're doing and how to maximize profits.
I literally just said this out loud to my fiance before I saw your comment. It's absolutely true though... The prices for cosmetics are unreasonable and unacceptable, imo.
Doubt it. Blizzard and other companies that do this aren't stupid. There is a price point that brings in the most money and they know what it is. They have tons of data from the games that King puts out. They know this market better than anyone.
D4 is far from a shitty game. It’s mid, it has good graphics, a decent story, has minimal glitches and practically no performance problems. All the data and well let’s just say it the facts say the game a 7-8/10 which is far from a bad game. Just because you have a hate boner for a game and can’t look at it from an unbiased view doesn’t make your opinion fact. You don’t decide what is or isn’t a good game the collective rating the public gives it decides that. even on steam it’s sitting at a 72% which is great for a blizzard game on steam considering there’s a bunch on terminally online weirdos like you with pronouns in your bio who will blindly dislike bomb any game they make. Like it or hate it the general public liked the game and the majority of people thought the game was ok. These are objective facts, cope.
It's fine if the game isn't for you, but can it really be a shitty game if it's made so much money? You may not like it, but clearly the game is something people are willing to spend money on.
@@WarTalonX the more yall miss the joke the funnier it is lol. Google hyperbole xD Comedy is hard for D4 fans. You should look into fiscally successful failures. Sales don't mean the product is good, it means consumers are willing to consume that product. Those aren't the same concepts.
If they are like 10 bucks each would be better. I bought a few cosmetics but only the “sale” versions. And I got a bunch platinum with the expansion pack
Good. I'm glad it's doing well. They have worked with the community and the game is MUCH different and MUCH better than at launch. Excited for the future.
Game has been bad since first giant nerf, season 2 I think.. dungeon layouts were and are still crap.. endgame and more is turning into Diablo 3... No thanks on Blizzard games.
I was actually quite surprised that the cosmetic sales were as low as they were as a ratio to game sales, but then I realized that they have only scratched the surface of things. While I think that some of the "low" sales is due to the prices being too high (greedy execs often misunderstand the balance between margin and volume), there is also the issue that the cosmetic right now are ALL based on your outfit. There are no skill/spell MTX, no footstep MTX, no pet MTX... yet. So I think there is a lot of upward mobility for their MTX revenue by moving to other types of MTX. The other thing this will do is allow them to put more and more earnable outfits in the game that look great without sacrificing store revenue. I will say that there are definitely some outfits that are just flat out better in the shop, but for most classes, there are really cool items and outfits that drop natively. Some of my preferred necro pieces are dropped items.
As long as it's not P2win items and also not predatory random lootboxes, they can charge 500$ for them for all I care. I've never paid a single dollar on cosmetic items.
D4 is irrelevant. It's a financialized game run by marketing execs wearing the hollowed out skin suit of a formerly great franchise. The sooner most people realize this, the better.
I don't think they will realize it, because addicts gonna addict. A cursory read through this comment section reveals tons of people rationalizing corporate greed in a way that makes it seem innocuous.
@@k-3402 Then they'll continue to waste money on bad games as is their right. In meantime, people like me will continue to save my money for more worthy games.
Great vid! Liked the comparisons as well. 👍 Would have been cool to compare the revenue earned with sizes of the companies, to get an even better picture.
I have bought one cosmetic since launch. I'd buy a bunch more if they weren't so expensive. The price makes me question whether it is a good use of money and at 1/3 the price of the full game, it's hard to justify
honestly one of the things thats lost in arpgs now days is watching ur character look better nad better over time from gear you found. d3 still had that and it was really cool getting a drop that was exciting just because it looked great. d4 kinda lost a lot of that if you compare it to its shop items. poe ofc has never had great looking drop items, but i excuse it as its a ftp game i guess. It is a shame though. I feel paid cosmetics effect an arpg a lot more than other types of games.
I agree with you about these outlandish price points! It's just greed. It's not showing any thank you to it's player base. Not all of us can afford these prices, being either to young, to old, disabled or retired on pensions you can barely live on, let along have much left over for fun. Or an escape route from your misery and worries. You would sell more longer at a lower price than a once in a while expense cash grab!
When the people left playing your game are the ones who are the most willing to look past the flaws of the game, you are left with an audience you can abuse even more.
The real questions are: Who the fuck is buying these types of cosmetics and what kinda job do they have that allows them to do this? ...are they hiring? I can email them my resume...
The thing that bothers me the most but probably most wont really get or wont admit to it is people would say “its my money i would spend it any way i like” its all cool and exactly how it should. Thats why its not a problem that said game or company gets absurd amount of money. But said way of spending money sets the bar of the quality you will get. The effort you get the amount of content and the price that comes with it.
The in game cosmetics are way to expensive for me to ever consider buying them. They would be smart to sell them at a lower price and rely on higher quantities of sales. Once you've swiped once, you're more likely to swipe again. A sale won't do it for me, as I am not entering the store to begin with. The entire pricing structure would have to change drastically for me to event consider opening the store. I doubt they would even consider a change though, so I'll just continue to ignore the store.
sometimes i forget the shop even exists. they did a poor job of driving people towards is. its just a small button at the top of the map screen that i never notice
Those price are high because people are actually buying it. For me, even at 5$ I won't buy any cosmetic, so probably the people that are willing to pay for cosmetic don't care about the price.
Hopefully some of that chedda will go twords adding more quality to the game. I do appreciate all the updates and look forward for the expansion for sure!
And that is why they made it an online only live service. It wasn't just an accident or a reimagining. It might not make people happy, but it is just good business. My problem with cosmetic sales is they do exactly what you said, they encourage developers to make included cosmetics bad. If i can get an equally good cosmetic with just the base price, why should i give them another $65? In my opinion D4 is doing this. POE also does this in my opinion but it is F2P.
I haven't spent much on the microtransactions because the amount it costs for what you get usually just isn't worth it, to me at least. I've bought 2 different armor sets, the first one only usable by a sorceress and the next one only usable by a druid, and I regret buying them. it's like being given a tiny breadcrumb of what is available for a third of the price of the game.
This is great to hear regardless of what you think about the cosmetics that shit is helping the game a lot and I think that is why the content seems to be constantly changing since like season 2.
In my opinion, the "expansion pack" should have been a normal seasonal update. That would have FOR SURE brought a lot of the playerbase back, including me, because it would have been such a interesting season to go back to, with a lot of new stuff and things to do. Instead, in Blizzard fashion, they paywall it. If every season was super interesting, then sure, expansion could be behind paywall, but in my personal opinion (and a lot others), the seasons have not been interesting enough to justify having the first interesting change behind paywall. I can't support this shit but the joke is on me for buying the game to begin with when it came out. I just feel like the team behind this have no shame in their work, or non-work rather and it annoys me as a developer myself. Yeah, maybe they are controlled by higher power in Blizzard which doesn't allow the developers to do all the stuff they would like to do. Granted, I am a PoE-andy where I am playing a free game and I am beyond excited every single league they release because I just KNOW they will deliver on all my expectations plus more. This last league for example was just insane in regards of balancing, new mechanics and more.
I do the season pass solely based on what the season cosmetics look like. I’ve paid for two season passes…. I bought 2000 of their points. I don’t even remember how much 2000 points cost but add that to two season passes is all the money I’ve spent. I haven’t even purchased the expansion yet…. I will. But not until it’s released.
Here in Canada the expansion is listed at 54$ Canadian dollars and the base game is around 65$. And all these numbers doesn't even include taxes so yeah I don't think I'm going to buy it when it's basically buying the game full price again.
Seems weird to basically throw your reputation away from for so little money. Imagine if they just made a banger ass game with no microtransactions, I'd honestly say they might have made even more in this time frame and retained a respectable relationship with their long time playerbase. (Myself and plenty of other people I know simply did not purchase the game because of the microtransactions).

You have no idea about what you're talking about and the way you tried to justify it made me chuckle, thanks.
They'd probably make more on the in game purchases if they were cheaper

All the data and well let’s just say it the facts say the game a 7-8/10 which is far from a bad game. Just because you have a hate boner for a game and can’t look at it from an unbiased view doesn’t make your opinion fact.
I've never paid a single dollar on cosmetic items.

honestly one of the things thats lost in arpgs now days is watching ur character look better nad better over time from gear you found. d3 still had that and it was really cool getting a drop that was exciting just because it looked great. d4 kinda lost a lot of that if you compare it to its shop items. poe ofc has never had great looking drop items, but i excuse it as its a ftp game i guess. It is a shame though. I feel paid cosmetics effect an arpg a lot more than other types of games.
