      I wanted to include it as a classically disturbing movie but when I watched it, it was not in the right setting so it didn’t feel fair!

      Same. Particularly I watched it when I myself was 19, in college, and home alone at like midnight. I had literally no idea what was in it regarding plot and when I heard that the main character was basically me but a girl I was uneasy the entire time and the entire night

    This made me realize that a lot of horror movies I’ve enjoyed are not disturbing, or maybe not even horror.
    The only movie I’ve seen below the iceberg is hereditary, and I was able to handle that one because it only had one really disturbing moment. I found hostel far more disturbing than that because rather than one (truly) shocking moment, it was a whole movie of depraved people.
    Seeing the original Reddit list and 100 days of sodom being towards the top, there’s no way in hell I’m watching anything on that list!

    I really like that you did this. The funny thing about the OG disturbing/horror movie iceberg or other peoples similar ones, is that the farther down you go, the worse the movies get. I don’t mean worse as in violence and disturbing stuff, I just mean the movies get more bad and unwatchable. A lot of them are laughably bad. Also the further down you go the more pornographic they get and I feel like some people are just watching them for that, which is weird, because the internet exists and there are better ways to see that stuff without mixing disturbing violence(unless that’s your thing). It’s also just the quality of film is worse with smaller budget and little to no story. I love an indie film but these just aren’t it. I guess, like you said at the beginning, lets cut out the crap and make an actual “watchable” iceberg. Where the movies are at least decent and not embarrassingly bad.

    honestly, i thought you were gonna put talk to me somewhere. for me, it was definitely one of the most disturbing films i have ever seen. like you said, not necessarily for the gore, but just the whole atmosphere, the absolute dread... i was physically upset, i spent the whole movie just desperately wanting to get up and leave. i havent processed it yet, i was so traumatised that my brain just... dissociated, i feel like i dont even remeber the film. dont know when ill feel like rewatching it

    For me the Poughkeepsie tape’s definitely got to me as someone who can watch horror and forget about it after (and not have nightmares) this one I couldn’t forget. It really hit me that this is something that can and does happen and it really bothered me for a long while plus the actress who play Cheryl just played her character so well and I feel like that’s what really helped it be so disturbing to me

    It's kinda funny that this mirrors the 'classic' iceberg - the more real it is, the deeper down it is. In the case of the classic there's actually literal 'real' stuff, whereas this of course is just mimicking reality. Just an interesting parallel and it makes sense to me.

    So refreshing to see a horror iceberg that isn’t chock full of things that would make me want to set myself on fire after watching. When I was trying to be a teenage edgelord many many years ago I unfortunately also watched a Serbian film and I really wish I never had. Never seen Megan is missing and I never will. And I think for me part of what makes the human centipede 2 so disturbing is how unsanitary it was.

    I really like this idea… got me thinking what would be in my iceberg. I recently watched When Evil Lurks and I feel like that would be in tier 5 or 6 for me. It was surprisingly cruel. I did like it a lot as a movie but wow it was intense. Also would put the vengeance trilogy around there, which I also love. Then Ichi The Killer which I didn’t like as much as I thought I would but it would 100% be on this list!!

    Def agree that sinister wasn’t too disturbing, I think it does “dread” really well (at least for me) so it doesn’t surprise me that it would cause higher heart rates. I remember watching it for the first time and just feeling on edge the entire time.

  • @LittleBeeMadi

    I love seeing how other people rank movies based on their perception of what is disturbing for them, it really fascinates me! I CANNOT watch Tusk because the body-horror aspect is just too much for me and really freaks me out, but Sinister is one of my favorites because it scares me in the right way and amount that I usually look for in a horror movie. I am surprised to see it was ranked as the scariest. I can't handle much horror at all but that movie is perfect for me.

    The last house on the left scene is extremely disturbing. I skip it when I watch it now. That being said, I think how disturbing the scene is actually is important! I feel like it draws attention to a serious subject matter in a shocking way which raises awareness of the severity, brutality, and horrors of such incidents.

    • @mermaidscooter
      @mermaidscooter Місяць тому

      I heartily disagree. I don't think those movies raise awareness of anything. How many people are unaware that violent SA is severe, horrible or brutal? If anything I think that they contribute to the idea, that only SA THAT bad actually *counts* as being horrible. Also, some ppl watch movies with scenes like that, because they enjoy those scenes in particular. There have been A LOT of horror and non-horror films with violent SA scenes, usually featuring women and girls as the targets, and I think I would struggle to find any evidence that they've helped at all.

    Awesome Iceberg, I understand every layer here. The original disturbing movie iceberg is just edgelord's flexing. Once it becomes gore media compilations it is no longer of interest. Surprises for me, seeing Lake Mungo so high up, that film unsettled me... a few films lower down that I've not seen yet and probably should (Mad God!). I sort of wonder which tier Frontier(s) would come in at... it's a lesser discussed French New Extremity film which I found jaw dropping... similarly Calvaire (the ordeal).

  • @w.m.8126
    @w.m.8126 11 місяців тому

    Ya know when I watched Terrifer 2 I really did not expect what I saw lol (and just for reference I'm a pretty big no gore person and personally get more creeped out by conceptional or paranormal or real-life mimicking horror)
    Edit: Human Centipede at 12 years old, definitely very disturbing. Human Centipede at 12-13 years old, mainly the SA was the most disturbing but generally felt tame(?) compared to the first for me. SAW franchise or anything known for lots of gore or SH, nope. Haven't watched most of Sarah's iceberg because films intending to be disturbing horror are not my thing. Concept, symbolic, occult/religious ish, and like classic horror? All about those personally. Would probably watch Clown, Snowtown, Mother! (again; liked it the first time), Green Room, Green Inferno, and The Hills Have Eyes.

    The Hills Have Eyes remakes are soo much more horrific than the originals, especially the second one! I'd give the originals at least one watch. I also just watched the original The Last House on the Left last night and same thing! I think I'll be watching the original over the remake from now on because majority of the SA and violence was actually off screen so it makes the entire movie more bearable than the remake and I actually somewhat enjoyed the remake but the original was surprisingly mellow. The music was also fairly upbeat too 😅

    As someone that’s gotten to level 4 on the original iceberg, by that point they stop being films trying to tell stories. I remember watching those movies as an exercise in “how far can I push myself” and “how much can I take”. I was no longer watching to see a film with a plot. I like your list a lot more.
