Milwaukee finally added M12 charge capability to their heated gear adapter model 48-59-1201!
Thanks to Milwaukee and Home Depot for providing a review sample.
That's a dope little device. Especially being able to charge an m12 batt. via usb. I like that.
I always enjoy your reviews. I like the engineer's prospective on tools. Great job!
Thanks! Glad you don't mind when I nerd it up. :)
Thanks for clearing this up. Wasn't sure what the difference was initially
Great, thorough review. I just picked up a heated jacket which included this charger and your four year old review is very relevant to this day!
Great review (as usual).
Quick note though, the 10.8V number is nominal. At full charge, this battery chemistry hits 4.2V per cell or 12.6V pack voltage with 3 cells in series.
Hey there, do you know which size of DC port the Milwaukee jackets use? Is it 2mm pin or 1.75 etc?
Need to replace the cable.
Thank you for your time
Great vid bud. Keep up the reviews.
Thanks!
fantastic video , thank you!
Wow, this is a cool little thing. I'm equally into tech as I am doing small DIY projects with power tools, so I really like the USB out and especially being able to charge M12 batteries with USB. It's so much more compact than the standard M12 AC charger, and even if it charges slower, I would usually go days between short uses with power tools, so I don't think it'd be problem at all. This little thing is actually pushing me towards getting into the Milwaukee M12 system, instead of the Makita LXT 18v subcompact drill and impact driver I was originally looking at starting with. I honestly probably don't need full sized 18v batteries for what I do.
Super late reply here, but the M12 Line has been absolutely stellar for me as a service electrician for the past 6 years.
If you're not doing heavy duty work, these tools perform perfectly for half the weight. If you are doing heavy duty work....it takes a bit longer.
Highly recommended!
Damn, almost want 2 of these.
One for the jacket, one for the car. Good to charge the dead battery when using a backup battery.
I have two of these and have found if i drain a battery flat a lot of the time i try charge it with this usb charger and i just get red and green flashing lights. but the batteries charge fine off my wall charger. I don't think these usb chargers have any ability to charge an older battery that is run flat. As in the voltage is just a tad lower and the usb charger just throws an error.
thank you once again for the info :), I have one last question, can you tell me the size of the socket for the DC output connection
Anyway to heat the MILW jacket with a aftermarket slimline battery???
Great video once again thanks for posting. Think I'll be getting one since my girl took my m18 to charge her phone
Sounds like you need a One-Key version so you can track down where she left it! 😆
I've flown with these a few times. The tools, including my m12 drills are in the checked luggage. My two m12 batteries can be used to charge my phone, headphones, ect on the plane ride and when I land I can load up the drill with whatever juice is left and charge it with a USB cable from my laptop. It's a unique situation, but it has been nice to not have to pack a charger for the drill batteries and a power pack for my other devices.
These are awesome for travel. So convenient not to lug along a charger for use with the heated jacket on trips too!
Good video !
Just a friendly correction, single cell lithiums charge at 4.2 volts not 3.7 and lowering the voltage to charge the cell is performed by the phone itself's charge controller.
Good point, thanks.
The micro USB input makes this useful for travel, unlike the 20v USB power source options. I have the makita USB adapter, but if I'm on a trip that doesn't require power tools, I'm not wanting to bring the giant makita charger. I much prefer using the batteries I already own instead of buying dedicated USB power banks. The 18650 cells in power tool batteries tend to be less prone to catastrophic failure than lipo batteries used in power banks.
Yes - biggest plus is not having to bring along a bulky charger.
Another comment I wanted to ask if the 4 lights turn green at all as on the manual it shows that they do but ive charged mine for hours and its just 4 red lights or lower
You're looking at the wrong lights. The 4 red LEDs in a row are the "gas tank" level of the battery to let you know how much you've used up. Those will always be red. The green/red LEDs at the bottom near the micro USB port are the charging progress indicator lights that the legend corresponds to.
hello, please can you tell me the DC output (0.0 Amps???) with the m12 power source, I want to connect a 12 volt trail camera, it possible?
You don't even need this adapter for that since you want 12V output instead of the 5V USB. There are plenty of battery adapters on eBay and Amazon for the M12 batteries. Just solder on whatever connector you want. One thing to note, all 12V power tool batteries are 12V Max, but 10.8V under load. They'll probably run anything that runs off a 12V DC wall wart though.
Can this charger use USB PD 12V 3A with 2Ah battery for fast charge? Or only micro usb 5v 1.5A? Does it use BMS like wall charger?
It outputs 5V at 2.1A or 9V at 1.67A through the micro USB port, and 12V DC through the barrel jack for the Milwaukee heated gear. It will manage the cell balance when charging an M12 battery - Milwaukee wouldn't make a charger without that functionality.
I'm curious, Do you know if the USB Output support 9V loads? or could you test that?
In the operators manual it lists the USB output as 5V,2.1A and 9V,1.6A.
It should support 9V loads per the manual, but I don't think I have anything that's compatible to test it with.
@@DoresoomReviewsI think it's safe to assume it's likely quick charge compatible which is handy. I've seen the 9V output listed on the side of it in some video's. Great item to use with the TS80 Soldering Iron then which is what I intend to use it for now.
Silly to complain that it comes with a cable. I’m glad they do.
Man Milwaukee needs to step it up with these and update it with a fast charging usb c charger. Dewalt has theirs with a faster input charger than my full size Dewalt charger as well as have a very fast charging output.
Also wtf this thing was $50 with the cable? Can't even find them with the cable/outlet adapter included and they're $60 now. Pretty hard to justify buying it
They did some smart marketing on this because a piece of plastic with a small board and a couple of connectors is a ton of mark up. I would probably make one if I wasn't so busy. I guess that's where the genius comes in, they know for travel its a perfect fit.
I agree it's about $10-20 overpriced, but man is it convenient. I've used mine a ton since I got it.
I'm seeing it priced for $84.99 on Amazon.....
@@rudddude5294 Amazon isn't an authorized Milwaukee retailer, so that's probably someone who bought it at retail and is trying to rip off uninformed buyers.
Id love Milwaukee to make a M18 version of this. Using 100w USB C PD for the input it would match the charging speed of the standard (non rapid or supercharger) which maxes out at about 80-90w. I actually have a home made M18 to USB C PD adapter i made so i can use my big 12AH batteries as a 200WH powerbank for my macbook.
DeWalt just came out with a version for their 18V batteries. Let's hope Milwaukee isn't far behind.
Glad to have found this channel I wanted to know the charge time as I just got my second jacket as the first was the wrong size and I wanted to see how long it would take to charge and I learned more then I came for im quite happy
is there a reason to why not showing how to charge a battery with the older adaptor, which doesn't have the micro USB port?
Very simple reason that I mention only 0:20 seconds into the video. The older adapter doesn't charge batteries.
how many amps is the 12v out port? is it fuse limited? I'm thinking an easy power supply or jump pack for motorcycle.
They don't specify max amperage for the 12V jack. I know the jackets can come close to draining a 2Ah in a few hours, so it's likely at least 1A at 12V. You can empty those M12 batteries a lot faster than that if you're using a high demand tool though - I'd think the batteries themselves should easily be able to output around 15A at 12V.
Doresoom Reviews you should make a motorcycle or atv jump start adaptor. then test it... lol! it would probably need the new 6ah m12 battery.
Did anyone test this? I’m searching for this info too
Any idea how quick it charges an M12 battery like a 3.0 ?
It seems to scale linearly with respect to Ah capacity. So 50% longer than a 2Ah.
Why didn't you show it hooked up.
When you say the new charger is narrower, how much we talking. Like 1/2" or so?
I'd say closer to 1/4", maybe 3/8".
Could this run a m18 fan off a m12 battery? Why can I not find a M12 fan? Have tons of nice m12 batteries.
I don't think so. The DC barrel input for the M18 fan requires 18V. So even if you could find the right connector, the fan would only spin at about 60% speed - that's assuming it would run at all.
I bought the battery not realizing that the charging cable does not come with it. It’s been plugged in with a random micro usb I have for more than 12 hours and the meter hasn’t changed from two dots. Is it really that big of a difference not using their respective usb cable??
Is the USB power source rated for 2.1A, or something less like 0.5A or 1A? It needs to be 2.1A minimum.
@@DoresoomReviews how would you know the amps on the micro usb cable
I want that! With an m12 3.0 compact battery!
How do i know if its fully charged? I have the 6.0 and its been on chargs for 4 hours and it still shows the red light....
It will show solid green when charged. It will probably be another 2 hours at least for the 6Ah.
@@DoresoomReviews its been plugged up for 4 hrs, how long do the 6.0 ones take?
Plan on about 1 hour per Ah. You're only able to charge at a rate of 2.1A@5V with the USB connection, so that's 10.5 Watts. With perfect efficiency it will take around 6 hours to charge a 6Ah battery (10.8V x 6Ah = 64.8 Wh)
is the DC port for outputting or for charging the batteries?
The 12V DC output port is for powering Milwaukee heated gear. The micro USB is for charging the M12 batteries.
I just bought one of these and im not an expert on electronics by any means. Would this thing be ok to charge my Chromebook with?
This can output 9 VDC at 1.6A or 5 VDC at 2.1A, both from the USB port. That's up to 14.4W. However, it looks like most Chrome books use 25W or greater chargers. So it might not work for that. I'd look into the M18 Top Off if you really need something to power a Chrome book: www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-M18-18-Volt-Lithium-Ion-175-Watt-Powered-Compact-Inverter-for-M18-Batteries-Tool-Only-2846-20/313297952
@@DoresoomReviews thaks for the extended information. I appreciate that.
Are you selling that m12 battery charger 3.0?
No, sorry.
Can I charge the battery and charge a mobile device at the same time?
No
Does it charge a Nintendo Switch?
Whats it mean when it only has one light blinking every time you insert a battery
Which light and what color? There's the 4 red LEDs that are a "fuel gauge" and the red/green LED that's the charging status indicator. If it's one of the 4 red LEDs that's flashing, then your battery is completely drained and you need to charge it.
I get my battery off the charger fully juiced up and insert into the the portable device as soon as I plug it in it it blinks one red dot on the power level of the portable charger and nothing happens when I try to power up but the battery’s fully charged
Is it true they have 21700's in the 3.0cp battery?
No, 21700 cells won't fit in the stem that goes into the M12 tools. All M12 batteries use 18650 cells.
Nice review. Is there an M18 equivalent of this product?
Yes but you can't charge it with a usb cable
Thanks! There is an M18 to USB adapter, model 49-24-2371, but it doesn't charge the M18 battery. It only powers the heated gear or USB devices.
Cool, thank you for your response.
Where can i buy this adapter from

How to charge jacket please????
The M12 heated jackets don't actually have an integral battery. This charger/power source can power the jacket using an M12 battery through the round port labelled "DC Out."
To charge the M12 battery with this charger, just insert the battery and plug a micro USB cable into the port labelled "IN."
Where did you get to Milwaukee phone cord
It comes with the 48-59-1201 charger/USB power source. Or you can buy it separately for $20 as model 48-59-1202
It comes with certain Milwaukee RedLithium USB products, such as the 2111-21 head light and 2110-21 flashlight.
I recently purchased a spare battery, by itself, with charging pack (for close to $40 ) and I regret it. I should have purchased flashlight for $15 more and would have gotten flashlight with it. You don't really need charging pack because you can plug head light into USB power source and it charges battery.
If you could use a flashlight or head lamp, I suggest spending a little more ($20 - $30) than to pay $20 for an USB cord by itself.
i still recomend the m18 usb power sorce over this m12 and to use the actual battery charger to charge it and you still can use it on a m12 heated jacket
The M18 batteries are way too bulky for use in the heated gear, but that's just my opinion. If you wear an XL or XXL you might not notice it though. I like not having to lug around a separate charger, especially if I'm going on a trip and trying to pack light. It's nice to have either option!
@@DoresoomReviews it’s actually not as bulky as you think
Can you plug it into itself to charge it
Since you asked, I gave it a shot: instagram.com/p/BcBlYE_l6BD/
Doresoom Reviews 10/10
Amazing
It spontaneously self-destructs
Would have been so much better if it charged from usb c. I'll wait when they make that version.
They did make a minor update that lets more USB cables work with it, but still no USB C though. instagram.com/p/BqSxUZ4ASX-/
@@DoresoomReviews still though. I only plan to use something like this to charge my m12 batteries in a more convenient way. 2-3 hour charge for a 2000mAH battery is way too slow. My phone is 3000mah and bc of usb c it fully charges in less than an hour.
Don't forget to account for Wh though. This is 2Ah at 10.8V, the phone is 3Ah at 3.6V. So that's 21.6Wh for the M12, and 10.8Wh for the phone. It comes out to pretty much equal charge rates.
I bought two of these chargers and they broke down within 2 months of each other. They would blink red and green. The batteries were fully charged, but the chargers refused to work.
Used a good charging source such as your vehicle. I use my deep cycle battery from my solar set up. I found that that red and green blinking light means that you may be using a poor source with low charge capacity. I plugged in my cellphone reserve battery to see what would happen. It flashed red and green. I suspect that was due to my reserve battery containing 1 18650 battery trying to charge my m12 battery with 3 18650s.
Literally just bought one and it just started blinking red and green just now as I got done reading this comment 😂
Only use these for my heated jacket. They both broke down in a month
Everytime i look at milwacky tool there is a comment like this. Pass
I really wanted one but internet is full of reviews of people saying these break down... 😢 Maybe don't include the USB cable and charge a lil more to make it work properly... Hire some Makita engineers to design one lol
2ah or 20,000mah. There is nothing quick charge about this setup. It takes me about 5 or more hours to charge just one. I wish the jacket would use micro USB
How many amp output is the 12v?
The max output for 12V isn't specified, but I know it's at least 1A, since the M12 heated jackets can drain a 2Ah battery in about 2 hours.
Don’t want to fall on it snowboarding/skiing!!!
So the 49-24-2310 doesn't allow you to recharge a battery via USB? This is literally the only reason I am watching this video, and you didn't mention it.
That's literally one of the first things I said - at 0:20 I mention that unlike previous versions, this one charges the batteries. The product name of the model you referenced is a "power source" not "charger." So no that one does not charge the battery.
@@DoresoomReviews You should have mentioned that explicitly at ~2:40. Why compare two items and not mention the single biggest difference between them?
If you want me to repeat what I already said, you could always watch the video again... 🙄
@@DoresoomReviews Ah, I skipped the intro and went to the comparison.
Nice review. I agree it is a handy device but Milwaukee is asking a bit much for the item.
I doubt it will ever get down to $30, since that's what the older 49-24-2310 that doesn't charge M12 batteries is going for, but $40 would be a nice compromise. Or they could drop the price on the old ones... but that's probably just wishful thinking on my part.
I got the knock-off n-12 version. Exactly the same and in the teens cheap.
Didn't come with a cord , but who cares?
Wow
Micro usb and nice doesnt belong in the same sentence unless you are talking about how nice it is that milwaukee has a release date for their type c charger.
You realize this video is 6 years old? And yes, a USB C version is long overdue.
Mine has been changing for 8 hours and is not charged
What's the power rating of the USB adapter and the Ah rating of the battery? A 0.5A USB port could very well take that long with a 6Ah battery. But if you're using a 2A USB port, it should only take a little over 2 hours for a 2Ah battery. (10.8V×2Ah = 21.6Wh, which a 5V*2A USB port will take just over 2 hours to supply.)
It’s a 3.0
It say 36 wh
I'd expect that to take around 3.5 hours with a 2A USB outlet, or up to 14 hours with a 0.5A USB outlet.
I just watched this video and charged my iPhone X from 5 to 100% with a Milwaukee charger and a 1.5 battery and the battery indicator on the charger still reads 4/4 (full) on the light up deal...
Hmm, with the iPhone X's 2.7Ah 3.6V battery that should have used about 9.3Wh. The 1.5Ah 10.8V M12 batteries have a 16.2Wh capacity. So it should have drained the M12 battery roughly to 50%. It's possible the phone's charge indicator is conservative to avoid draining the battery beyond minimum levels to preserve overall battery life.
Or it might be possible that you are not as smart as you think you are.. good luck with your smoke blowing.. also, how pissed was your wife for raiding the cabinets under the sink to decorate your UA-cam set with her tools?
Is this available for purchase yet?
I think it's scheduled for a September 2017 release.
HD has it up on their website now listed with two day delivery: www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-M12-12-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Charger-and-Portable-Power-Source-48-59-1201/301956778
Neat Product but a bit $$. It would be best to buy it along with a heated garment
I agree, I wish it was $10-15 cheaper on its own. It doesn't make sense to buy this as a power bank if you don't already own M12 batteries either, since there are cheaper options out there.
Can you use your your own phone charger instead of buy that 30 dollar cable and wall plug box??
This comes with the wall plug and the micro-USB cable. But you can use your own as long as it's rated for 2.1A or greater.
why not usb-c ajhhh
This came out a few years ago when USB-C wasn't as popular. It would be nice to see an updated version though!
You need to wear a microphone, cannot hear you.
Barry I
Pardon
Who doesn't have a micro usb cable? lol us Apple people, we dont have one haha.
Good content, bad audio. Get a mic.
I sorry, but I may think you be using this tool the way it wasn't intended to do... Great vid though..
How so?
And the chinese knockoffs are about 14 bucks!
I wouldn't risk it with my batteries. Do the knock offs have built in battery protection that stops charging when it's full?
This thing is such JUNK. Bought two of them. Returned next day. DOA
I have 3, all still working great after 5+ years.
Charging current /output too low !!
I mean, this is a seven year old product at this point. They've released/announced updated ones recently.
Thank you.
I am talking about the most recent one you showed here, unless they upgraded it to a higher output, but here in Europe that what we get as to be seen on EU official milwaukee website - it is called M12 TC.
One thing is annoying and confusing at Milwaukee: the models names differ from US to EU , as an example the 12V impact wrench 2555 is under the name of M12 FIWF12-0 ( IW= Impact wrench, 12= 1/2 anvil, 0= bare unit) Another example the HDD 3404 is here in EU under the name: M12 FPD2
- Returning the small charger: it is conveniently small and would nicely fit in my Dewalt Tstak 2 with foam insert, where I have the Millwaukee 3404, recently bought from Amazon US and the Dewalt dcd703 (with its interchangeable heads with battery and small charger) with one issue the normal m12 charger, the classic bigger one there isn't enough space left to fit it in, that's why it is important for me to have this Milwaukee small charger you showed here.
Here's the new one: www.acmetools.com/milwaukee-m12-top-off-power-supply-and-charger-48-59-1211/S0000000015032.html
@DoresoomReviews I ordered the newest one a few days ago and returned it - its output is only 1,5Ah
definitely not worth it lol
Thes charges suck
Duhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! I feel so much dumber for watching this video ! I need more simple explanation s ! Duhhhhhhhhhh
This thing is garbage. Just bought a brand new one. Battery pack and /or battery is shot..... look at the battery, made in Vietnam 🇻🇳. I'll be taking it back tomorrow in absolute disgust and researching a better manufacturer. Which is any manufacturer that can guarantee there product will work for at least 5 min. Milwaukee canot make that promise apparently
It's unfortunate you got a dud. But you're not going to find a higher quality 12V platform than Milwaukee. I have dozens of M12 batteries, some up to 10 years old. Never had a single one fail on me.
Привет! У моего телефона есть charger 20w, можно ли зарядить этим charger аккумулятор m12?
Yes, you can use any micro-USB cable and USB power supply to charge an M12 battery with this charger.
@@DoresoomReviews thanks!
