I bought a 2010 golf gti 3 years ago and I can honestly say its the best car ever. its fast enough, reasonably economical, and great fun to drive. I usually change cars every couple of years but this car is staying.
Excellent video! I’ve had my 14 gti for a year and ABSOLUTELY love it! I’m at 89k miles and not a single issue except ignition coils and a PCV replacement. The biggest thing I have to say with these cars is CHECK THE OIL FREQUENTLY! Every 900-1000 miles mine goes down a little past half a quart. It’s like clockwork. Second big one is to check the PCV, every fill up. I personally check around the PCV for leaks. You can tell it’s bad by starting it, and unscrewing the oil cap. If it starts to idle rough and you feel the cap being sucked back in, then it’s bad. It’s very important to replace it soon or it blows the rear main seal. These cars get such a bad rep for reliability when all it comes down to is preventive maintenance and research. The only 2 things that will fuck your day and your bank account on this car is the timing chain tensioner grenade, and the bipolar mechatronics unit. If you get the DSG, change the oil every 30k miles. Trust me...it says 40k, but mine was low after 30k. This is the main reason the Mechatronics unit fails. If you’re lucky the clutch pack will fail before it does. Lastly, I’d like to reiterate to new mk6 owners...once again...please keep an eye on the oil. If your lifters sound louder than normal, check the oil, if you have any doubt, check the oil. Don’t be that guy/gal who ends up browsing eBay for used 2.0 TSI engines. FAQ: Whats the clear fluid leaking from the passenger side of my car? AC draining... EPC light flashing, car spuddering, what’s wrong with it? Check the Ignition coils. I feel a noticeable loss in power and less gas mileage, why is that? You may need a carbon cleaning. Pool of oil near the middle of my car, what’s wrong with it? Rear main seal may have gone. What’s the slick oily dirt around my engine? Valve cover may need to be reglued. You heard that right, the Mk6 doesn’t actually use a gasket it uses a glue. Why??? Because German. 😂 Those are just a few issues I’ve seen from personal experience. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask me! 😎

Too funny, I love it. I had a 2010 GTI in gray, sold it years ago. (Sold the Euro tails separately). It was APR Stage 1. Recently I bought a white 2011 GLI. Both manual. The GLI had 174k miles, bought it for $2200 (USD). Jakob (lol) I did the stage 1 chip, short throw, APR intake system, a little heavier clutch and it is my favorite daily driver. Next step will be wider rims next year so I can put the power down properly. The airbox and stage 1 tune really opens these cars up. Feels like how they should have been from the factory. I don't like loud cars, so I am hesitant to do stage 2 where you open up the exhaust flow, maybe when this exhaust rusts off. I LOVE that it's already pre-beat up. I don't mind parking it anywhere.
I went an APR intake and AWE downpipe ( one hi-flo cat, no o2 “cel” problems) & kept the stock mufflers- no drone, great intake noises, more throttle response & power. 2010 manual. Lighter wheels & sticky summer tires really help starting/stopping/turning.
@@philiporeilly9662 Tires and brakes are no brainers for me on all cars. I have summer and winter wheels respectively. If you look at the price for the APR Stage 2 w/ high flow downpipe, the gains are minimal. Almost laughable gains considering the cost for the downpipe & tune vs. Stage 1 gains. That's my issue. Do I need to upgrade the whole exhaust to get a better return on investment for APR Stage 2 w/ downpipe? ~250HP on a FWD car feels fast. I need wider tires (8.5/9.0 width all around?) to put that, or any more power down anyway. Did you see/feel significant gains in HP/Torque going from just Stage 1 to adding the downpipe?
Definitely a good choice in car and in looks to be in great condition. I'm a bit biased, having owned 4 VW in the past however. I love how happy you are when talking about the car. Definitely a true car and now VW enthusiast!
I find it awesome that they make headunits for retrofitting them to old cars. I was looking online and they even had headunits from VW that work in Mk IV Golfs and such.
I’m currently a senior in high school and this is my exact car but it’s a stick and has 4 doors. It’s a great car and has sick wheels. Pretty badass. Also knock on wood mine does not have the check engine light on.
I had a 2013 GTI Autobahn edition. Even had the same OEM euro taillights.. I loved that thing to death but I sold it last year and now haul my family around in a compact SUV. I'm a huge fan and seeing you guys review this gave me a weird mix of feelings but mainly joy. Hope your wife enjoys the car Yuri. Now paint those side markers and you will love it more. I've watched pretty much all your videos but this is my first comment. I always hit thumbs up though. Keep up the great work guys.
I brought a preowned MkVI GTI and it has been nothing but good to me. Keeping up with maintenance and dealing with the usual issues is inevitable but for the price it's a great vehicle! Keep up the good work StraightPipes!
Cool review, good choice! I have a 2014 Mk6 GTI Drivers Edition (5 door) - the final batch built in Wolfsburg. Original owner with 116K miles and still a blast to drive. Had to replace the intake manifold at around 90K miles due to known issues around carbon build up (some VINs covered under extended warranty). Otherwise, it’s been a great car, even with a family. I even did a personal review of it on my channel. My other car is a Chevy SS sedan, fun pair of cars!
White 2010 GTI 5 door, Detroit wheels, black leather, sunroof, and... H-pattern manual. Puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. And it fits 4 kids plus school bags, so passes the practicality test with flying colours.
I had a 2010 GTI 2 door black dsg as well, fantastic car. I did put in a downpipe and a stage 2 tune that made the car pretty hilarious but unusable in snowy or rainy weather. No issues when I owned mine but I moved into a 2016 GTI that's about to hit 100k miles completely stock with zero issues as well. Nothing but good things to say about all 4 of my GTIs I've owned.
Matthew Ferrin yep they eat through them and it goes catastrophically bad in this era of the EA888. Better off with a MK5 GTI or the MK6 Edition 35 which both use the more reliable EA113.
@@jameslove888 yeah get an MK5 so you can replace the cam follower every oil change or your high pressure fuel pump eating through it!! Goodbye mr. Camshaft, hello about a grand or 2!!🤣🤣🤣

@@jameslove888 Only cheaper if you catch it in time though, They do have two generations of drive chain mechanism because the first generation was faulty and didn't last.
22chachalaca mk7 TSIs have been fairly reliable so far. According to my knowledge the biggest reliability issues have been related coolant leaks and water pumps. The humble mechanic and shopdap are two channels have all the answers your looking for. 👍
Got my 2014 Wolfsburg with basically all the same features and manual trans I totally love it. Only minor complaint I can think of is the suspension is a little tight and you feel a lot of bumps and have to have a slow approach on inclines other than that it’s a fun daily driver
I just sold my 2010. Be sure to update the upper timing chain tensioner if it hasn't already been done. Great car. I miss mine. Carbon build up was an issue, so stay on top of that. Mk6 GTIs were German-made as opposed to mk7 and mk7.5s so they feel better put together despite feeling older. I compared it to my wife's MK7 GSW all the time.
@@egorlike1324 not that I know of. The mk7 Golf R was built in Germany, but I believe the mk7 GTIs were built in Pueblo, Mexico. Check the door sill for manufacturing build location though.
I have a Wolfsburg Edition. DSG. Deep Black Pearl paint. It makes me smile every time I drive it. It feels like a big go kart. It has enough power to always excite you, but not enough to get you in trouble. As for the reliability issues, as long as you know the car and do some research, you'll be ok. Drive one and you'll fall in love!! It has so much character.
Daily driven my for 150k miles, 75k with the k04 turbo (+40% power and +80% torque) and all I've had to do, apart from mod support, is replace front sway bar mounts, endliks, a MAP sensor and an O2 sensor. The O2 sensor was probably mod related though! Really it's been very reliable for me.
The 5 buttons in front of the shifter: ESP, TPMS (Euro version you reset), W (Winter tire mode), Parking Sensors on/off (Euro version), and Suspension or Auto Start/Stop (both Euro version only)....depending on options.
My 2011 has been Giac stage 2 for over 75k miles and is still going strong. No serious problems and I frequently get 33 mph cruising around town. Also walked a new charger R/T from a dig. Stage 2 all the way.
You should for sure order an RCD330 to replace the headunit. Gives you android auto and apple car play! supports all the steering wheel controls etc. I just put put one in my 2013 JSW TDI and its the best.
MK6 are notorious for having timing chain issues so if you do buy one, make sure to replace the timing chain tensioner ASAP!!! Otherwise these are great cars 👍🏽
There’s a recessed handle in the interior of the hatch that you can pull on so you don’t have to touch dirty exterior paint when you close the hatch. Also, the OEM stock shocks are probably long gone. The stock shocks are excellent Sachs units and they’re reasonably priced. Get some new ones and have some Audi S3 control arm bushings installed up front and you will absolutely love driving this car.
As a fellow mk6 gti owner, I'd like to help with the trunk unlock thing you mentioned. Press unlock once on the keyfob, pause for a second, press unlock a second time.

I just found and bought a 2010 MK6 GTI one owner car in United Greyhound Metallic with 14,000 miles on it. It’s virtually brand new. Very happy with it. Got the full leather package, dsg, and it’s the 5 door. Great car.
As a 10’ cc r-line owner I appreciate the love, interestingly enough my dsg doesn’t have launch control, and I’m jealous of the piped in sound to. These motors are too damn quiet even with intake & exhaust.
I found a white 2013 for sale, watched your review here and immediately left the house to go buy it. It’s such a fun car! I love the DSG! Thanks for the review.
I’ve had mine since 2013. Wolfsburg Edition. Bought it new. Tuned it with APR stage 1 @ 5,000 miles. Currently has 150k miles and has been trouble free the entire time. Just do your regular maintenance, get a carb cleaning every 40-50k miles and you’ll be golden.
You can get an OEM Apple CarPlay for $300 - look up “RCD330” - it’s an OEM touchscreen head unit that came standard on some Euro and Asian market cars. 100% straight fit to an MK6. Just get the right one - you need a 187b I believe
He mentioned that his wife can't drive stick, but if that wasn't an issue id say the Si is the best used deal right now. Super reliable car and fun as well.

My wife and I watch all of your reviews. You guys are the happiest car guys we know! Lol. We are enthusiasts as well. My wife recently purchased a 2016 fiesta st and we love it. We’re kinda disappointed that you haven’t reviewed it yet, as far as we can tell. I think the older fists look better than the new 3 cylinder versions. If you get your hands on one some time can you please do a review on it? We know you love the car. Haha. Props Bruthas.
I know mine is sitting in my driveway needing a new water pump and only some gtis get the recall but the oil from the head I think leaks oil and goes too water pump and fucks the seals
I bought a 2012 mk6 GTI and threw on the Revo stage 2+ ECU, KO4 turbo, Revo Big Brake kit, Revo intercooler, Revo intake, and had the 14 spokes off the mk5 GTI with Nexen N5000 plus tires on it. Loved that car to death, sadly I had the oil changed, and the company did it incorrectly and it caused the timing tensioner failure that those engines are prone to. So please make sure you don't blow it up, tensioners need to be checked about 100k miles so just trying to help a fellow GTI fanboy out. I hated to see my car go, but Im so glad you got one now so it brings back the memories with mine.

Definitely a good choice in car and in looks to be in great condition. I'm a bit biased, having owned 4 VW in the past however. I love how happy you are when talking about the car. Definitely a true car and now VW enthusiast!
The CEL comes on so much I had to put a CEL sticker on my back glass. "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine" lol
SOMEONE FINALLY DID MY CAR!!!!! i’ve been waiting for a legit review of a mk6.
The intro music is so fitting for a Euro/Gino car haha, love it
I love that you guys backed what you were saying with old clips 👍🏽
VW RCD330+ radio perfect OEM upgrade for Apple carplay and Android Auto 👌
Stuart Smyth I have that in mine works so nice
I find it awesome that they make headunits for retrofitting them to old cars. I was looking online and they even had headunits from VW that work in Mk IV Golfs and such.
Bought one for my 2012 and it's been fantastic. You lose satellite radio though but I guess you could just use the app + Apple Carplay
One of the best mods I did to my 2013 gti along with the tune and brakes/suspension
Would recommend without a doubt, Android auto has been fantastic
Have one in my mkv R32. Great radio!
I’m currently a senior in high school and this is my exact car but it’s a stick and has 4 doors. It’s a great car and has sick wheels. Pretty badass. Also knock on wood mine does not have the check engine light on.
2 months later... what about now?
5 months later.... it definitely does now.
@@FTWdulaney almost 6 years on my jetta no check engine light but knock on wood though.
00:26 the check engine light is on, Truly VW
I had a 2013 GTI Autobahn edition. Even had the same OEM euro taillights.. I loved that thing to death but I sold it last year and now haul my family around in a compact SUV. I'm a huge fan and seeing you guys review this gave me a weird mix of feelings but mainly joy. Hope your wife enjoys the car Yuri. Now paint those side markers and you will love it more. I've watched pretty much all your videos but this is my first comment. I always hit thumbs up though. Keep up the great work guys.
How the Maple leafs stick to the grill on cliché corner...EPIC!
I actually enjoyed this review a lot. It was a pleasant surprise 😅
@TheStraightPipes please review a second hand car like this once in while.
Should have gotten [ST8PIPWF] as a license plate...
Bought this car last year after watching this video. I am deeply in love with it
I love these older car reviews. I cant afford anything new so this is right in my range.
White 2010 GTI 5 door, Detroit wheels, black leather, sunroof, and... H-pattern manual. Puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. And it fits 4 kids plus school bags, so passes the practicality test with flying colours.
Classic VW. Check engine light on. Keep us up to date on the reliability
Suuuuurrreeeeee!!!!!!
I feel sorry for those who buy one with more than 100k miles...
Does it have tune mix? Should I just crash it into a ditch right now? 😂🤣
Awesome review! Please do more older cars and or fan’s cars.
This video makes me so damn proud to own a MK6 GTI!
LOVE GTI from South Korea!!
I GOT MK7.5 GTI and love to drive my GTI
Just bought a 2010 with DSG. Can't believe I missed out on this car earlier............
I’m mostly likely going to pick up a 2013 one next weekend it’ll be my first car
So, did u get the GTI?
@@CourtneyKarl yea it’s the one in my profile picture I’m glad I got it haven’t had a single problem with it
@@allan8524 so how is it. U have any problems?
I keep reading: “I had”,”I Loved”..
i still HAVE a 92 VW GTI 16v. Bought in 99.
Keep your GTI!
Finally a review of a car I am likely to buy !
Not the W124 in your avatar? ❤️
I had one in manual and currently have a mark seven GTi. I’ll take the mark six any time, such a fun car.
I’d not recommend buying a used VW
Aleksandr I mean no I would not. I’m concerned about VW reliability and it’s a criminal enterprise tbh
Aleksandr I went with Korean this time as I always do Japanese and German is too expensive and American isn’t engineered well enough.
do your research on timing chains and the tensioner
Matthew Ferrin yep they eat through them and it goes catastrophically bad in this era of the EA888.
Better off with a MK5 GTI or the MK6 Edition 35 which both use the more reliable EA113.
@@jameslove888 yeah get an MK5 so you can replace the cam follower every oil change or your high pressure fuel pump eating through it!! Goodbye mr. Camshaft, hello about a grand or 2!!🤣🤣🤣
@@PeterFeltersnatch852 £30 part that can be changed in 15-20 mins, hardly a big job. Only needs changed every 40k miles or so, not with every oil change.
It is a flaw with the engine but an easier and cheaper one to fix than the tensioner on the EA888.
like for stage 3 on the gti
Aaaah, the swiss cheese wheels, the memories...
Blur at 4:01 whurrrrrr !! was a nice touch.
Wasnt mk7 gti still built in Germany?
My blew up. I put in a new engine and still love it. Still waiting on money from VW.
@@egorlike1324 not that I know of. The mk7 Golf R was built in Germany, but I believe the mk7 GTIs were built in Pueblo, Mexico. Check the door sill for manufacturing build location though.
@@Sijray21 if u see a 3 on your V I N it's a Mexican.
To avoid the carbon build up, give it some nice throttle every so often.
Daily drive this for a year to answer the title of the video -- what would your maintenance costs be?
Daily driven my for 150k miles, 75k with the k04 turbo (+40% power and +80% torque) and all I've had to do, apart from mod support, is replace front sway bar mounts, endliks, a MAP sensor and an O2 sensor. The O2 sensor was probably mod related though! Really it's been very reliable for me.
@@Nickersont88 same here
Provided you don't have the dreaded timing chain tensioner failure, they're pretty reliable. That's basically the one Achilles heal.
The 5 buttons in front of the shifter: ESP, TPMS (Euro version you reset), W (Winter tire mode), Parking Sensors on/off (Euro version), and Suspension or Auto Start/Stop (both Euro version only)....depending on options.
Watching this really made me want a mk6 gti then I remembered that I have one so that was nice
My 2011 has been Giac stage 2 for over 75k miles and is still going strong. No serious problems and I frequently get 33 mph cruising around town. Also walked a new charger R/T from a dig. Stage 2 all the way.
VW future owner: Is check Engine light on?
Dealer/Seller: Yes!
VW future owner: Shutup and take my money!
Your channel has this magical way of reigniting my enthusiasm and sparking my interest in cars that I previously didn't know/care about.
❤️
Nice grab Yuri! Now give that poor car a proper detail. I almost spit out my coffee when I saw that engine bay haha
I have owned my 2010 VW GTI since 2011, I've loved it ever since 🥰 APR Stage 2+
"I bought this for my wife to drive because the Prowler is a special car just for me." 😂
You should for sure order an RCD330 to replace the headunit.
Awesome car. I actually got one as my first car back in 2016, still running as standard and smooth today.
The lagunas are my favorite gti wheel
I have a 2018 gti pp but got a set of 17" dark grey Lagunas for my winter wheels. wasnt sure they would fit over my brakes but they just fit.. I love them.
So agree! I want to get some for my new used GTI. My last one had them. I'm just glad I have a GTI again!
Timothy Germann I have a white 2013 gti with the dark gray lagunas... Wouldnt want any other rim
My 60 year-old dad has one of these with 150k miles and an APR stage 1 tune. He drives it like a teenager and it makes him smile like a child :-)
I had my exhaust cutout set to one of those buttons, looked OEM
Gorgeous example, and mechanically sound car. The mk6 body style is going to age very well.
Figures I’m sitting in my TDI VW and the check eng is on too!
Classic VW
You can get an OEM Apple CarPlay for $300 - look up “RCD330” - it’s an OEM touchscreen head unit that came standard on some Euro and Asian market cars. 100% straight fit to an MK6. Just get the right one - you need a 187b I believe
I would say BRZ, Miata, or 350 Z are all also great choices. Civic SI also a good shout.
at this point 370zs are getting to a good price point aswell
He mentioned that his wife can't drive stick, but if that wasn't an issue id say the Si is the best used deal right now. Super reliable car and fun as well.
Zaid Kidwai those cars look like race cars tho lol
I got a 350z with the six speed manual. Totally recommend!
I bought this car a year ago except mine is manual. I love this. first youtube video I've ever lived
I was wondering wtf they were saying each time they said “shoatoat” then I realized they were from Canada and they were TRYING to say SHOUT OUT!

•Air intake
•Castles downpipe
•Cat back exhaust

•Get suspension mods/handling mods
•Colder spark plugs
•R8 ignition coils
•Oil catch can
• Intercooler
I’ve been saving up for one for a year and a half now. Buying one around March.
what year did you end up getting?
Please do more of these types of reviews! This is the best!
The GTI is one of my favorite cars on this channel
So nice to see you guys review my car!!!!! Have the 2010 candy white with APR stage 2 tune on it. Never looked back. Oh yeah and definitely get the apple carplay headunit.
Come to W-Europe Yuri, I'll you drive my forbidden American fruit VW, 2.0 TSI Scirocco
My brother in law had one. It only needed the water pump replaced 5 times!!!
The Laurins Stoo putting in trash parts
I know mine is sitting in my driveway needing a new water pump and only some gtis get the recall but the oil from the head I think leaks oil and goes too water pump and fucks the seals
@M T I cant disagree
@@ramon_noodles7125 I'll stick to my MK4 GTI with 182,000 miles and still going. Rock solid German schnitzel
@@Ghostblaze1 I wish I could afford a mk4 r32 that my dream schnitzel right there😂😂
I bought a 2012 mk6 GTI and threw on the Revo stage 2+ ECU, KO4 turbo, Revo Big Brake kit, Revo intercooler, Revo intake, and had the 14 spokes off the mk5 GTI with Nexen N5000 plus tires on it.
That Eurobeat intro though!
That is not Eurobeat, more like dance or trance techno style, sonds good though, but this is some Eurobeat right here for you: ua-cam.com/video/GxrSNht8Q7w/v-deo.html

"How many miles to gallon does it make?"
THIS GOLF: "No"
This car is not thirsty compared to a lot of other cars on the market lol. STI or Speed 3 quite a bit worse.
Bought one in the summer of 2020 in CA. $7,200 with only had 85K on it! Recently drove it from LA to MA and it was amazing. Love this car!
Why didn’t Yuris’ buddy just buy a 4 dr GTI?
