We Chinese kids grow up soaking up with the story of Journey to the West. So glad someone translated the Chinese ancient tale into English. I still remembered how much I enjoyed reading the book of Journey to the West 西遊記
As someone who has been deeply influenced by the TV adaptation of *Journey to the West* since childhood, my generation has long hoped for a game that could truly bring to life the hero Sun Wukong, who holds a special place in our hearts. Since August 2020, countless Chinese people like me have been eagerly awaiting the official release of *Black Myth: Wukong*. The *Journey to the West* is filled with classical Chinese language and ancient expressions, which can indeed pose some challenges for those unfamiliar with the story's background. However, I hope that this game will help more people understand the true essence of Chinese culture. I encourage everyone to support Game Science in this endeavor.
Call me lazy, I'm thankful someone putting a video like this together, this story is magnificent. It's opening up my view a lot and I would love to visit China in the near future!
Nope because I actually tried to find this on audible and stuff and no dice minus a 40min book which.... I'm just going out on a limb might not be the whole book. Since I usually see it as three sorta thick books together.
Came upon this video while looking for Black Myth Wukong Stories. Best one hands down I’ve found. Narration was steady & clear. The animation was freaking A+ top notch. Beautiful graphics & colors! Looking forward to watching part 2! Great job!!
Chinese mythology mainly revolves around the struggle between Taoism and Buddhism. Sun Wukong's 72 transformations and other abilities were taught by Bodhi Patriarch of Taoism. Taoism used Wukong as a pawn to resist Buddhism, but was finally conquered by Tathagata Buddha. In order to consolidate his position, Tathagata Buddha used Wukong to purge some people in Buddhism, and thus the story of Journey to the West came into being. On the surface, it seems to be an inspirational story of Wukong's enlightenment, but in fact it is a power struggle among the upper class, alluding to the political darkness of China at that time. This is why Journey to the West can become one of the four great masterpieces of China.
Very inspired point of view! Respect! However, I personally think it is slightly hypered the relationship between Taosim and Buddism. Yes, they have clashes and conflicts here and there, but taosim even at its prime is not a national or common belief amtong the public. Unlike Buddsim where the rulers kept promoting and spread out across ancient China. Taosim is like a hidden gem with a much smaller population to practice and follow. I think Wukong is the perfect example to reflect the fusion of Taosim, Buddism, and Confucianism.
There is an often overlooked conversation between Laozi and Guanyin in chapter six of the original novel. Laozi claims that he is the founder of Buddhism and Guanyin didn’t refute. Some people in ancient China held such believe. Laozi who was the founder of Taoism, traveled to India and established Buddhism there, according to the legend. This is of course non sense but a reflection of Taoists animosity toward Buddhism at the time. Buddhism being a foreign religion, became dominate teaching after reaching China and marginalized the local Taoism.
An important point is: it's not just a struggle between Taoism and Buddhism, but also one of overcoming one's ego, passions and insatiable desires - the causes of human suffering that keep man in the cycle of Samsara.
Journey to the West is a great work, not only because of its rich and interesting plot. In fact, behind the scenes, it reflects the struggle between Buddhism and Taoism, as well as the author's satire on politics. In the original book, many monsters are actually pets or mounts of gods, and these gods "accidentally" let them fall from heaven to earth and control different areas, which is why when Sun Wukong defeats many monsters, there are often gods to take over the monsters. The main task of the four-person team is not actually to reach the end, but to reshape the division of forces on the journey. The author does not describe grand scenes such as wars, but indirectly reflects the competition between religions through the connection of small stories. Children and adults read, and different ages will have different understandings, which is why it has become a masterpiece.
That is the reason Chinese dont treat demons as the Westerners way. In short good or bad are in every creatures, whether heavy or hell can be triggered by one thought of youself
I’ve known about sun wukong from god of highschool . This the first time I’ve actually dived deep into his lore. Black myth wukong made want to learn more
The fact so many people are here because of Black Myth: Wukong just shows how impactful a game can be on people. It’s gotten so many people more interested in Chinese mythology, something that’s been overshadowed by other mythologies in the west. We all know Zeus, Odin, Ra, etc. People may have heard of Wukong, but now they’re learning his story and the other interesting characters around him and those engrained in Chinese and Asian culture.
Toriyama(RIP) was like, "Sha Wujing is such a badass demon bandit turned good, I should incorporate him into this manga I'm working on. I think I'll call him Yamcha"
Dude I gotta say that this channel is AWESOME!! I really hope the rest of the journey to the west will be covered completely on here man. Please keep up the good work, your formula works. Perfect content man, great reading and wicked cool presentation. Love it!

There are many hidden meanings of the novel: 1. it is indeed a superhero novel from 1500s in China. 2. Wukong is a metaphor of the writer himself, the transition from a free willed and capable young man , strive hard to become a servant in the official administration system (unlike western blood based social structure, China had a channel for bottom level, especially scholars to climb the social structure ) 3. it was also a book full of sarcasm mocking the religious battle between the local religion Taois, the 2 imported religion Buddhism and Persian Zoroastrianism) and how those religions integrated.
@Ttyumbra there are many hidden meanings up to audience's imaginations. E.g. 1. The final part of the book introduced yellow eyebrow who is quite powerful, and he pretended to be Tathagata Buddha. But he was actually a servant of Maitreya Buddha. And his final punishment was not death, but to be sent back to Maitreya. This leads to conspiracy about the hidden political fights within Buddhism. 2. There are several example appears in later parts of the book that, powerful Yaoguai not being punished, due to their relationships with powerful figures in Taoism and Buddhism. But the Yaoguai without strong backgrounds gets harsh punishments for lighter crimes. 3. Wukong calls Bajie " you dummies" "pig" in the early stage, prior to the encounter of the ”6 ear macaque" who appear to be the same looking as Wukong, who also seem to have learned the similar skills as Wukong. It raises question : who taught him the skills and why? After the death of 6 ear macaque, Wukong in the book never called the piggie "dummy" anymore, but calling the name "bajie" 4. The Tang Monk has 4 disciples : Wukong the wild monkey to whom Buddha wants show englightment, Waking(Bajie) the boar who used to be a god in Taoism system, and Wujing who used to be a servant in the celestial court(Taoism), plus a horse who was transformed from a dragon . Why did Jade emperor allows these 3 non Buddhism figures to join this journey along with Wukong, and whether was sent to spy. 5. Why Jade emperor did not request stronger Taoism gods( from his own religion) to control the monkey, but turned to Buddha. 6. Those above were inteprrtsted from conspiracy angle, and these are just a few of the many. But they are also a lot of analysis from traditional perspective that are worthy to learn. Such as : who is the Tang Monk, the endings of the 4 disciples , each Yaohuai's origins. Who saved the Tang Monk when he was a child.
@@Gurd-f2zThe final metaphor is to satirise the government and the emperor. The satire of religion can be said directly, and there is no need to write a book implicitly. If a person speaks out his dissatisfaction with the government and the emperor, he and his family will be punished, so it is necessary to write this book full of metaphors to create characters corresponding to people and political struggles, power relations, and corruption in reality.

Journey to the West is based on the real journey made by a Buddhist monk who traveled to India to seek marerial about Buddha . The novel is considered as one of four main masterpieces of Chinese literature.
The "Western Paradise" in the novel should not be India, but Tibet or Dunhuang. Ancient Chinese people yearned for the mystery of mountains, while India was a plain. It should have been impossible to cross the Himalayas at that time.
I just found that the Journey to the West and Lord of the Rings resemble to each other a lot. Both are a fellowship journey to somewhere, while one was to fetch Buddhist scriptures and the other was to destroy the ring. The most important characters in both books are the most vulnerable member in the team. Both of them are very kind-hearted, innocent, sometimes so naive that can even be easily tricked to turn against their own fellowships. Despite the other team members were so powerful that they could’ve made journeys a lot easier, they had to protect their most important character march to the destination.
The difference is, no matter how many times you read the Lord of the Rings, the good are still the good and the evil are still evil. In the Journey of the West, Gods are Gods when you read it at 10, Gods are Demons when you read it at 20, and Gods & Demons are all just Humans when you read it at 30. At the end of this Journey you do indeed achieve peace with the world, but not a magical world you imagined at 10.
Lord of the Rings is so focused on the sin of the greed for power and trying to destroy it while struggling with the temptation whilst Journey to the West is a story of enlightenment where you find yourself feeling like you've gained some wisdom by the end. An almost 500-year-old story inspired by the journey of an actual monk is hard to compare with one that is barely 100 years old
We, Vietnamese 🇻🇳 Chinese language faculty university students are slowly watching this "Chinese drama" episode by episode 😅 Support this channel & playing "Black Myth: Wukong"! ⛽⛽

You have an awesome reading voice, love the work you've put into the video you've put together, as your were explaining everything I was thinking about one of my most favourite shows when I was a kid, the 1978 series of Monkey, gosh I loved that, I'm trying to hunt down that show on DVD now, oh that Wu Kong game is absolutely incredible I'm blown away by the attention to detail, I'm going to cook up some Chinese cuisine tonight for tea I'm really in the mood for that, I'm also hungry for more stories like this, subbed man, love your work 😊
Thanks to Blackmyth Wukong, I remember reading about the monks trying to poison them on one of the bosses lore sheets on chapter one. The small-bodied big-headed final boss. Pretty interesting.
I just wanted add my thanks for an excellent series of videos summarizing Journey to the West and have recommended them to others. This is the best summary I’ve ever seen, and kept me glued to the television eagerly awaiting each new chapter. I also really liked the stylistic art that you chose to accompany the videos as it helps keep track of the content. After finishing the series and truly enjoying the videogame Black Myth: Wukong, it made me wonder if there are other pieces of Chinese literature that extend the story of Sun Wukong. Do you know if he appears elsewhere? I have heard there is a side story novel Xiyoubu about Wukong that takes place between chapters 61 and 62, and it would be great if you could do a summary of that novel as well. Is there anything else?
This would be a epic two part movie! Part 1 the birth and beginning of son wukong till he imprisoned foe 500 years . Part 2 son wukong journey to the west!
Western TV series 10 years ago would be good. Western TV series today, they will give u a black skin gay WuKong, a rainbow BaJie, a shemale transgender Sha WuJing, and a hefemale transgender Tang ShanZang, and they have X party every night, including the white loong horse.
I can’t wait for you to have all 4 parts up so I can show my wife. I’m getting the new game we’re all talking about and it will be cool to have her know the backstory before we play
Grew up watching the 1970s Japanese TV series. Then watched the 1960s Chinese cartoon. Finally read the English translation of the original Chinese novel in the 1990s.
Everyone should watch this Chinese movie : Xuan Zang (Original title: Da Tang Xuan Zang) : release date 2016. This movie has the same theme as Journey to the West, with lots of beautiful background scenery!! This movie is also available on UA-cam.
So, the journey to the West is basically a journey from China to India? There are a few mythical creatures in this game and story that can be counterparts to mythical creatures found in India's myth. That's such a cool piece of info and adds more intrigue to game for me
And the monk in the story existed in Chinese history, he walked from China to India in Tang Dynasty and brought back Buddhist Sanskrit sutra back to China after 18 years , he spent the rest of his life translating the sutra into Chinese. One famous translation is the "Heart Sutra" that many Chinese Buddhist still recite it as their daily practices
China's Classic of “Mountains and Seas” is also very fascinating. It contains both evil beasts and auspicious beasts, as well as many romantic stories.
I've always liked the Monkey King, though I didn't know anything about Xi You Ji specifically then. A couple of years ago, my (Chinese) girlfriend had me watch the 1986 CCTV broadcast Xi You Ji series. I'm also currently in book 3 (of 4) of the revised editions of The Journey to the West books. And yes, I can't wait to play Black Myth Wukong 😆
I'm buying the game next pay, but the biggest complaint I saw was people saying that the game didn't explain the story very well. Glad I found this to get some context for the story.

Journey to the West is based on the real journey made by a Buddhist monk who traveled to India to seek marerial about Buddha . The novel is considered as one of four main masterpieces of Chinese literature.
And is my favorite story of all time

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I appreciate the hard work and effort put into this work. I am moved by the journey to the west tale and its characters. Truly, thank you!
Thanks for the insights into Wukong’s lore! Immersive Translate made understanding the connections to Journey to the West a lot clearer.
Thank you for this magnificent production. The illustrations, and the pictures are absolutely marvellous.
A fantastic classic. Before I learned to read, my grandmother told me stories of Wukong. A truly legendary tale. ❤
This is dope..dope art..dope narration..just DOPE..thank you
Nice channel, gonna subscribe, you have many great videos about Egypt, China and many others.. really good
This is so well explained, I feel like I know what’s going on in the game now! 😅 I can appreciate the story alot more bc of this video.
Bravo my guy, definitely watching the whole series! Excellent work 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Glad you enjoyed!
Watching after finishing the game. Missing points are getting linked. Great video, thanks 👏👏
Excellent though not easy interpretation , very beautiful and colorful characters illustrations ,thanks so much 🙏🙏
I am probably one of MANY who is here because of Black Myth Wukong. But I loved the video and the channel. I can't stop now. On to the next.
You have an awesome reading voice, love the work you've put into the video you've put together, as your were explaining everything I was thinking about one of my most favourite shows when I was a kid, the 1978 series of Monkey, gosh I loved that, I'm trying to hunt down that show on DVD now, oh that Wu Kong game is absolutely incredible I'm blown away by the attention to detail, I'm going to cook up some Chinese cuisine tonight for tea I'm really in the mood for that, I'm also hungry for more stories like this, subbed man, love your work 😊
Appreciate the support! And that old series is still one of, if not the best version out there. None of the remakes measure up.
@@MythicalArcana completely agree! 👌
BEAUTIFUL N AWESOME WORK OF ART. CONGRATULATIONS WELL DONE.
You've earned a like and sub, great content here

☺️🙏 lovely depiction of Sun Wukong!
Ah thanks pretty much wanted this one
Thanks to Blackmyth Wukong, I remember reading about the monks trying to poison them on one of the bosses lore sheets on chapter one. The small-bodied big-headed final boss. Pretty interesting.
Black Myth Wukong will be the Game Of The Year a real GOTY
Rebirth has it clutched gotta be swinging for the fences to dethrone rebirth
It’s a good game but not GOTY
Man i love the lore, made me feel some type of way...❤
Wow. What a superb start of a complicated mythology. The drawings, music, details are all outstanding! Will keep watching the rest.
🤔 I want another Chinese drama of this version 😀
I do too! but it'll never be the same as the old one with the shitty special effects. that was a simpler time
请搜索《西游记》
Came here from the masterpiece Black Myth Wukong amazing story 👌😃
Can't wait to get my hands on Black Myth Wukong
thanks for your hard working.
Gotta get ready for my journey, need the backstory so all will seem familiar
An HBO Game of Thrones style 'Journey to the West' would probably be massive on American television. Especially since the success of the video game.
Nice Video with cool pictures
Great history china 🌿🌱💚
Not history, but mythology.
@@heeroyuynewtype both really
Such an amaziing game!!!
This would be a epic two part movie! Part 1 the birth and beginning of son wukong till he imprisoned foe 500 years . Part 2 son wukong journey to the west!
11:40 from beginning to this point to get an understanding of the story before you boot the game
I think u did a great job, excellent narration and excellent art work ? Not sure wut to call the pics in the background, but very cool
Doing my research to get ready for Black Myth Wukong 🧐
In my country, we watch Journey to the West (1986 version) as kids, and also other anime versions. It was a good series for us at that time.
This is The best story ever made. I want to see a western tv series true to The book. It would be a dream come true.
They will probably make a mess of it. There are enough tv series and movies made based on this in Asia.
@@IA100KPDT i have seen some of them. But i want The complete story in one series. But yeah i agree with you. They would prob destroy it.

They need to make an episode for this legendary story
Grew up watching the 1970s Japanese TV series. Then watched the 1960s Chinese cartoon. Finally read the English translation of the original Chinese novel in the 1990s.
This video changed a lot of elements from the actual story
One famous translation is the "Heart Sutra" that many Chinese Buddhist still recite it as their daily practices
black myth wukong is how you do a faithful adaptation right honoring Chinese culture the right way
Im definitely gonna buy and read this book lol
Prepping for the Wukong game. This has got to be the nerdiest thing I've done today lol
😂 But in here for it all..just shows how powerful games can impact us on this journey of life
Im here coz of Sun Wukong...The Great Monkey King !!!
The great sage equal to heaven 🙌🏻
China's Classic of “Mountains and Seas” is also very fascinating. It contains both evil beasts and auspicious beasts, as well as many romantic stories.
Very very good video. thank you.
Goid job. Short and sassy!!! .Thank you. The pronunction and the characters' names could be improved tho. ❤❤❤
Ty for this content
I've always liked the Monkey King, though I didn't know anything about Xi You Ji specifically then. A couple of years ago, my (Chinese) girlfriend had me watch the 1986 CCTV broadcast Xi You Ji series. I'm also currently in book 3 (of 4) of the revised editions of The Journey to the West books. And yes, I can't wait to play Black Myth Wukong 😆
I'm buying the game next pay, but the biggest complaint I saw was people saying that the game didn't explain the story very well. Glad I found this to get some context for the story.
