Plus this is probably as close as Superman V Goku 3 we’re going to get for the next while, considering Herc and Wong are the ultimate inspirations for them.
Ok, whoever had the idea of doing a myth battle needs a raise, this was such a cool episode and there's so much potential for more matchups like these in the future.
I mainly just like the unique storytelling style of the fight. Having the fight happen like normal, but with one of the "Legends tell of a..." type of narrator to...narrate some moments of the fight. This style by far makes it unique already, alongside the fact that unlike most incarnations of gods we've had in Death Battle, these two aren't from any franchise but from the very myths all those others are based from. This will certainly be one of the most stand-out battles they've ever done.
This is the most unfair episode ever. In a series called “death battle” they have Sun Wukong… an immortal being who fought the heavens and COULD NOT DIE vs Hercules a mf who died.
Aside from the immortality perk, they weren't that far off in strenght, yes Monkey is a far more versatile character with hundreds of tricks and abilities, but the raw stats were close. Want a truly unfair battle? Look no further than Flash vs Quicksilver, lol. Omniman vs Homelander would also be there, but that battle was specifically designed to be unfair and was more so to see the characters' reactions.
This is definitely one of my favourite recent death battles. Looking at their original myths written centuries ago was such a great idea. I'm a big mythology fan so it was awesome to see although myths brought back into this versus setting. And the animation was Stella as well I love the ink effects and the fact they were literally fighting on a scroll. Really an excellent episode
Yeah I greatly enjoyed the asthetic used for the fight. And the narrator using a ryme scheme for talking, ties in to using rymes for story telling the the old epics.
@@jeffreyherrera5069 the best part even with all the his abilities immortality,s and power too infinitely dupe himself not a single person even doubts or questions when the Buddha absolutely destroyed wukong with little effort
Ha! Frfr. And the best he could do was imprisonment, not actual death. Buddha just went "Well maybe if we put him in time-out long enough he'll hopefully see the errors of his past." 😆
Hercules was strong, but when you have a character based Taoism, Daoism, and Buddhism where stacking immortality is the least craziest or esoteric thing, you're on a whole different level of the divine.
Sun legit took like six different immortality pills. He first learned immortality from his teacher, he then erased his death from "death note" then he ate some divine peaches and ate food and drank the wine of the gods. Then he legit chugged six bottles of indestructible/ everything pills. Then he ate like five baby fruit or something that makes him immortal again.
Out of all the Death Battles they’ve done this year, to me, this takes the cake as the most innovative and inventive so far. I love the amount of clever callbacks they’ve made to the myths for the both of them. And they perfectly captured how both deities would act upon meeting each other.
I love how during the whole fight, hercules was trying so incredibly hard, while sun wukong was laughing and joking around, and still beat the shit out of him.
Yeah that would happen when you put someone who gained immortality 9000 different ways against someone who only gained their immortality when they died.

@@StarWritterSW Nah, his original mythos is older (by like over a thousand years) but in story Herc was like 70-80 when his mortal half died and he ascended to godhood, whereas Wukong lived for hundreds of years before the JTTW even started, albeit he spent most of it trapped under a mountain
@@kinjorex101 he spent 300 years on his own even before being trapped under the mountain with the seal for 500 years. Also the mountain only kept him trapped because the buddha placed a magical seal ontop of it, otherwise he could just snap the mountain to pieces.
An interesting thing is that the '72 transformations" lets him transform into anything. The number means that he has 72 lives to spare, so even if Hercules was able to penetrate the 1000+ layers of immortality that Wu Kong has, he would still have to kill him 73 times before the dude die. So yeah... Hercules has no chance of winning this one.
and one thing not mentioned here is the treasures that Wu Kong wore. Like the armor that literally makes him immune to most attacks (not like he needs it, but still an extra layer of armor) and the boots that literally can make him fly and walk on the clouds (again, he doesn't really need it but an extra nonetheless). and also the ring circlet that was (forced) given to him to follow the monk, that think is indestructible and only Buddha can destroy it (iirc). That's why by reaching enlightenment and became Buddha, Wu Kong also freed himself from the circlet.
And the clones can be anything or anyone. Either matching the opponent exactly or being someone stronger. Heracles never stood a chance in this competition, no matter how many times they run through this battle.
Imagine the insane potential that mythology death battle have. Zeus vs Odin, Ares vs Thor. These matchups would be literally the stuff of legends. It’s like a whole new world
Some gods would be boring though, with their whole thing being 'this god can do literally everything in every moment and can never lose'. That fighting game that Jesus in it was a fun one though.
Well if you think about it that's how Chinese and Greek movies are sometimes you have the narrator reading what's going on kind of creative if you ask me
My favorite part for the stylistic choices for this fight would have to be a tie between the use of what looks to be ink strokes with mostly Sun Wukong’s attacks, and the music.
IRC, it was compared to leaping from one mountain to another, or at least from SWK point of view, and knowing DB theyre going to use two chinese mountains as reference
Between his problem with the Hydra, the Cerberus and the stories about good ol' Hecantocheires, Hercules' reaction to Wukong's multiple heads certainly got a good chuckle out of me.
Don’t forget Greyson! That’s where the idea of Hercules shooting 3 arrows through Sun Wukong’s chest; when he killed Greyson, he fired 3 arrows through his chest to hit his 3 hearts
@@theirishman8537 Oh man you're right! I completely forgot about Geryon lmao Even had exactly 3 of those. Herc REALLY can't catch a break from fighting people who don't die by lack of a head.
"So we're seriously just going to trust Wukong with the peaches of immortality?" "What's there to worry about? He has no reason to eat these. He's already immortal." Sun Wukong: You underestimate my greediness.
less greediness and more pettiness. Sun ate them out of spite in his tale. He did what he could just to irritate the heavens until they gave him what he believed he rightfully deserved, a proper seat in the heavens itself.
HUGE props to Death Battle for trying something new with this one. Sucks that it was a bit of a stomp, though. No matter how strong or tough Heracles could be, Sun Wukong's arsenal was simply infinite in nature. Maybe if he fought Darkseid, we'd have a fight on our hands to talk about.
I mean, this is a dude that has an argument for fighting superman. Both have infinite strength, both have incalculable speed, etc. Superman is written to be the strongest, but Wukong is also the powerhouse in the JTTW. Plus, you know, immortality means being impossible to kill, so 1000x immortality is worse.
@@zqninja3334 All I'm saying is both have carried infinity, both are super fast (I don't know the numbers. but stupid fast), so you would actually need to take a close look. If they do another traditional mythology episode like this, I'd be curious to see Achilles and Baldur go at it. Two people, immune to injury save for one very specific condition each, that'd be an intense brawl.
Well Baldur would most likely win imo, since it'd be a lot easier for Baldur to hit Achilles everywhere until he found his weakspot than Achilles finding out Baldur is only weak to mistletoe, fashioning a weapon out of mistletoe, and killing him with it.
@@Addlexx Yeah, pretty much this. It'd be only a matter of time before Baldur would find some way to strike Achilles' heel on accident and even if it only injured him the first time than Baldur would know where to focus his efforts and he'd beat him to a pulp.
@@Addlexx I think that in terms of "invulnerable mythical heroes", Siegfried would be a fairer match for Achilles than Baldur, since Siegfried's weak point is a lot more similar to Achilles', and can more reasonably be struck in combat
The battle was spectacular and very unique with the ancient narration and the format being like a myth, and never before have I seen a Death Battle that breaks the physical limits that the characters fights in. I mean, c'mon, those 2 were literally fighting beyond the the story they were told in, and cool detail with the zodiac constellations on Hercules' side and the 4 divine beasts from Wukong's side.
Not sure if anyone else said this, but the staff isn't just some random, unwanted pillar. It was put there by one of China's great mythological kings that solved the flooding of the Yellow River. Without it, the seas instantly started raging. Honestly, I'm not sure how they fixed it afterwards.
I didn't have very high expectations for this episode going in, but you guys KILLED IT! I'm so glad you stuck to the original myths instead of all the supplementary material the characters have been featured in since. I really enjoyed the breakdowns, and the art for the battle itself was absolutely fantastic.
I love battles like this, and it’s one of my favorites, because yeah it’s a one sided stomp but it’s still fun and mostly makes sense, I’m still annoyed with that bow feat for Heracles, but it’s light hearted
Actually the Staff is a mystery, it has about 4 interpretations just for its creation and many more for its function. In short like Thoth in Egyptian mythology but with the Tao. Emphasis on ruling because so does the first Chinese mythological emperor.

I really love this episode! The ink trails, the narrating! And how the "arena" opens up just like a scroll. Everything fits these legendary epics from the ancient time. It gives me the feeling of listening to grandpa telling these stories when we were little kids. Absolutely amazing! After thinking about it, this is probably my favorite episode!
That had to be one of the most pure and enjoyable DeathBattles to date. The presentation was perfect between the scroll world and narration. Truly felt like a battle of Gods.
The funny part is, Heracles went to the underworld to rescue the soul of his best friend's wife. Hades is actually a caring person and was touched by Heracles' wanting to help his friend BUT he could have done the same with his wife and kids. And didn't.
Hades wouldn’t have let him leave with his own family as it would have been a selfish desire. Risking the wrath of Hades for his _friend’s_ family however is a selfless act, as Heracles doesn’t get any direct benefit, unlike getting his family back
That was probably the most creative deathbattle to date. Using mythological characters and not just comic/manga fictions. I was definitely noticing the inspirations for dragonball and goku.
Wukong is basically if all Shonen fanfiction were made canon for one character. Heracles is basically "Hey what's the coolest thing somebody whos ridiculously strong could do?".
This fight was as mythical as I wanted and expected. Having Sun bounce off the top of the scroll and unfurling it more made me burst out laughing. A great fight that I’ll probably come back to in the future. Also that next matchup sounds hype as hell

Now that you've opened the gates of ancient mythology, you've got to do Odin vs Zeus. Though a match up like that should probably be reserved for a season finale.
How about Zues vs Ra? Both are "Sky Fathers." Odin is missing the "Sky" bit, but all three are also warriors. Just Ra and Zues have "Sky"-like elements though. Ra is more associated with the Sun, and Zues storms & lightning, but the "Sky" nonetheless. Odin vs Athena would be interesting. Both are war gods, wisdom gods, and gods of craftsmen; Odin more of poetry and magic, while Athena is of weaving, architecture, and defensive weaponry. Both are seen as strong, but not the strongest. (Odin being surpassed by Thor, his brother, and one of his son's, if i remember correctly. Athena being surpassed by Zues and Heracles.) Thor vs Heracles/Zues would be interesting - though i think the Greeks take that one... In Ragnarok, Thor dies to poison, and Heracles has plenty. And, Zues is Zues. 🤣
I think Karna VS Achilles would be great battle. Both of them are some of the strongest mythical heroes of all time. Karna has a weapon called Vasavi Shakti, which is so powerful that it’s basically a world ending nuke from mythology, but Achilles has a shield made by Hephaestus that is said to be able to create an entire world to defend against attacks. The two are extremely great heroes and I think they would be a perfect matchup.
@@x-omnistar-x9602 Achilles’ shield depicts celestial objects on it but it’s just an image, I don’t think it actually creates them mid-battle. Oh, and his heel kinda ensures a world-destroying nuke would take him out.

And then there are his abilities to see through illusions, disguises and transformations, manipulate the wind, part the waters, create barriers, summon gods, walk through fire unharmed, survive underwater, pass through metal and rock, walk on Solid Clouds, freeze any kind of creature, including demons and gods, or make them fall asleep, have horses listen to his every whim, learn new spells with just a few glances and the bare minimum of instruction and open any lock. Wukong also has great knowledge of medicine and his 72 transformations actually allow him to take the form of anyone and anything, including growing extra body parts and transforming other objects by spitting his blood on it. Wukong can go as far as turning objects into living beings and then using them as puppets (though they lack souls. Movement and speech needs to be programmed into them). According to the story, the scorpion's sting caught Wukong by surprise, and so he was stung by it. The scorpion demon's poison did hurt Wukong and leave him in great pain and suffering, but he couldn't die due to his immortality and indestructibility. He can't die but he was still pretty much incapacitated by the poison. It was those situations where you wished you were dead to end the suffering, but you couldn't due to you being immortal. So his usually useless party members had to go seek help to remove and cure the poison. After curing the poison, Wukong managed to beat the scorpion demon in the end, this time being on guard against the scorpion's stinger and removed it the first chance he got.

Can we all just appreciate the unique setting for the fight? Taking place on the scroll the story is written on, and both combatants being so powerful that they affect the scroll itself. Finally panning out in the final moments of the fight to see their heavenly personifications holding the scroll. Beautiful
I'm a huge fan of mythology but I never thought this would ever become a reality. It was really ironic because I was watching Journey to the West with my family the other day and this showed up. Not to mention I've read about Greek mythology and Hercules my whole life. The fact that this video was created is truly amazing.
Of course the only difference between mythology and an active religion is whether the number of people that actually believe it is 0 or not. Though honestly I'd rather have them analyze tall tales like Pecos Bill and Paul Bunyan, at least that falls into the domain of "no one ever believed this was true". People once believed in the myth of Hercules.
Wukong has way too many haxs to fight anyone. He is almost impossible to defeat. So many layers of immortality mixed with all the different skills it's just way too much.
As someone who grew up with Journey to the West, that myth is actually pure crack in the variety of powers and feats. When I heard it's Heracles he is fighting, I knew there was no way. Heracles' myth is just way too grounded by comparison.
just on his physical strength alone there should be absolutely no way that Sun Wukong could ever hope to beat Hercules. being that he literally held the "sky" up in the cosmology of greek mythology the sky represents the universe itself. absolutely no where in journey to the west do they ever give Sun any physical feats close to this. buddhist cosmology also has the universe and the heavens as smaller than they really would be,. in chapters it says he can jump to the edge of the heavens (referring to the geographical heaven he was in and only that heaven) in buddhist cosmology the heavens are anywhere between 4 and 9 cubic miles. and in chapter 7 page 92 it literally states the max he can jump is 36,000 miles.
Wukong held up actual conceptual infinity (32 realms [stated in video]) and jumped to the end of the universe in one leap (he did two because he stopped somewhere along the way to pee)
Also he has Hundreds, Thousands, MILLIONS of IMMORTALITIES , 7 types of immortality, so if 1 arrow kills one Greek god (1 immortality), then he would need (5 other types of pre-Buddha Immortality +1000 peaches [to lowball] +5 pills [assuming 1 gourd =1pill])= AT LEAST 1010 TIMES, His arrows barely move ~90x the speed of light, while Wukong can move OVER 16 ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE FASTER
This might be one of the most cool and interesting fights deadbattle has done, the whole scroll visual and narrator made it really cool and stand out to be honest

An interesting thing is that the '72 transformations" lets him transform into anything. The number means that he has 72 lives to spare, so even if Hercules was able to penetrate the 1000+ layers of immortality that Wu Kong has, he would still have to kill him 73 times before the dude die. and also the ring circlet that was (forced) given to him to follow the monk, that think is indestructible and only Buddha can destroy it (iirc). That's why by reaching enlightenment and became Buddha, Wu Kong also freed himself from the circlet.

Now that you've opened the gates of ancient mythology, you've got to do Odin vs Zeus.
Though a match up like that should probably be reserved for a season finale.
I think it would be cool to see Loki vs Hermes or Loki vs Dionysus
Athena being surpassed by Zues and Heracles.)
Thor vs Heracles/Zues would be interesting - though i think the Greeks take that one...
Ares vs Tyr would be cool
@@x-omnistar-x9602 Achilles’ shield depicts celestial objects on it but it’s just an image, I don’t think it actually creates them mid-battle. Oh, and his heel kinda ensures a world-destroying nuke would take him out.

Although Sun Wukong actually has uncountable more feats and gimmicks that aren't mentioned, and having personally grown up from asian folk lore, I'm just deeply impressed that Death Battle actually nailed 齐天大圣's lore right on the head. Definitely wasn't expecting that!
Munchkin: Sun Wukong's abilities are utterly over the top.
Small list of examples: Flying on either a magical cloud or by turning somersaults that propel him several tens of thousands of miles with each turn, changing into 72 different shapes, being able to change his hairs into different shapes (such as dozens of miniature versions of himself to help fight), see through illusions of all sorts, Super Strength, can't die due to a mixture of having crossed himself out of the Book of the Dead and eating immortality substances before being baked in a divine furnace, and is able to see for miles. Add in Wukong's indestructibility plus his ability to fly across the Earth with a single somersault and you've got the most bizarre/awesome set of powers in classic literature

No one can beat Wu Kong. Only God himself can beat Wu Kong in our religion. God as in *Buddha, Allah, Yahweh, Jesus Christ and etc.**Wu Kong's power touches both fiction and non-fiction. He is equal to that of God *Our Father* that is from Christianity.

Herucles got rekted badly. Why did they even bring of Hercules? He wasn't even close to the power of Wu Kong. They should had done *Hercules vs Achilles.**Both are Demi-God of Greek background whose power are more plausible to battle against each other.
I didn’t even think about the downsides of being so indestructible and immortal like that. That really puts a new perspective on things.
@@sunwukong1279 That's actually also a thing in Herakles' myth. One of his Hydra blood arrows strung Kheiron/Chiron, the immortal centaur and teacher of heroes, who survived, but was in such agony that he gave up his immortalty so he coul die.
Certain myths also hold that the shirt of the centaur dipped in Hydra blood didn't kill Herakles, but it basically melted a lot of his flesh to expose bone, and he was in such agony that he created his own funeral pyre to burn himself alive.
Isnt that what happen to Prometheus was sentenced him enternal torment, he cannot die?

Of course the only difference between mythology and an active religion is whether the number of people that actually believe it is 0 or not. Though honestly I'd rather have them analyze tall tales like Pecos Bill and Paul Bunyan, at least that falls into the domain of "no one ever believed this was true". As someone who grew up with Journey to the West, that myth is actually pure crack in the variety of powers and feats. When I heard it's Heracles he is fighting, I knew there was no way. Heracles' myth is just way too grounded by comparison.
Semi-grounded.
There’s just no way anyone can lift the sky unless they are like Heracles.
just on his physical strength alone there should be absolutely no way that Sun Wukong could ever hope to beat Hercules. being that he literally held the "sky" up in the cosmology of greek mythology the sky represents the universe itself. absolutely no where in journey to the west do they ever give Sun any physical feats close to this. buddhist cosmology also has the universe and the heavens as smaller than they really would be,. in chapters it says he can jump to the edge of the heavens (referring to the geographical heaven he was in and only that heaven) in buddhist cosmology the heavens are anywhere between 4 and 9 cubic miles. and in chapter 7 page 92 it literally states the max he can jump is 36,000 miles.
Yeah, Chu Chulain would have been a better choice as Herc's opponent. Both thematically and in terms of powers.
This might be one of the most cool and interesting fights deadbattle has done, the whole scroll visual and narrator made it really cool and stand out to be honest
When they started numbering all of wukong’s immortalities I knew that it was over for Hercules
If they do more mythology death battles, they should do Jormungandr vs Apophis. A giant sea serpent who fought Thor thrice vs a giant cobra who wants to devour the sun.
