Repairing the VDO speedometer of a Porsche 944

- The video gives you a step by step tutorial how to open and how to close the fully mechanical VDO speedometer of a Porsche 944 mark 1. In the actual case, a shaft was blocked by corrosion, leading to a gear turning on the shaft. Some oil helped to bring the shaft in operation and the gear was glued on the shaft.

Thanks! I needed this to see how to reseal an old VDO clock. The larger (110mm) speedometer was simple to reseal but the 75mm clock is much more difficult. An extra thank you for the English subtitles.
Thanls for the video! I haven't managed to do this job myself, even though, I've bought a small gear for the tacho. Now I know how I should have done this.

Very nice work, but is it really necessary to compress the housing so much to put it together? And, as these can be so problematic, would it not be possible to modify them to come apart more easily in the future? I've heard that resetting the trip odometer while the car is in motion is what breaks the gears most of the time. That's a design flaw!
Hi, you are right, maybe it'd s good idea not to close the speedometer in the original way. The next repair is coming for sure. The people here will tell you the same story not to press the reset of the odometer while the car is running. I not sure if this is true or a myth. But I follow also the advice. Greetings, Jürgen

in my case, and many others it seems, the problem is the shaft and odometer gear (5:19) (the ivory colored gear that is driven by the white worm gear) gets shifted inward away from the worm gear to the point it is no longer driven by it, sometimes the gear is loose on the shaft, in my case the whole shaft moves, easy to push it back but then what caused it (pressing trip reset while moving?) some put a spacer in there to prevent, the one in video is not aligned very well either, he got the gear locked on the shaft but what if the whole shaft moves (as it does often)? I think a spacer behind the gear to prevent the whole thing from moving is also wise

failed after 13.6 miles, further investigation revealed the metal wheel/gear at the end of the row of digit wheels had loosened on the shaft, if the worm gear spins the shaft gear (the often broken one) and the shaft is spinning and still no digit move then likely this metal gear has slipped on the shaft, it isn't supposed to. I took it all apart (by hacking out a bit of plastic to allow the shaft to pull out the side, then I remade the whole thing but roughed up the inside hub of this gear and used a touch of epoxy, we'll see what happens, reference; ua-cam.com/video/lTORETMYKaw/v-deo.html
I had to make a new shaft (I actually put a bend in the original!, oops) roughed up the area on the shaft where this metal gear rides, put a dap of epoxy in it assembled, then ran it it via a drill and an old speedo cable while it set up (didn't want to epoxy anything else, it all works, the needle is jumpy (was before too, worse now I think, that's a cable thing most likely) since I had to remove the shaft I reset the odo to 0, actual mileage unknown, no reason not to start over.

Dein Holznegativteil ist eine gute Idee, nur das Zuhämmern finde ich nicht so schön. Bei VDO sprechen die ja vom Zurollen. Aber in manchen Werkstätten drehen die das Instrument und führen rechts am Umfang der Dose einen Hebel mit Druck auf den Ring und verschließen so das Instrument. Man kann auch statt des „Flacheisen-Hebels“, ein Kugellager am Endes des Hebels montieren und damit daraufdrücken an den sich drehenden Ring.

Hallo, erste Hand ist in der Tat eine tolle Sache, gibt es fast kaum noch. Die Wartung im Porsche Zentrum sagt eher, dass immer nur das Nötigste gemacht wurde. Vorteil wäre, wenn alle Rechnungen vorhanden sind Dann weiß man genau. was schon mal gewechselt wurde. Ob sich der Kauf lohnt, musst Du selbst entscheiden, die Freude am Porsche kann groß sein, die Kosten sind es sicher. Viele Grüße, Jürgen

Hallo, man sieht, dass das Zahnrad einen Schlitz hat. Ich konnte leider nicht klären, ob dieser Schlitz original war, oder ob es sich um einen Riss handelt. Ich habe mir die Geschichte mit der Lupe angeschaut. Für einen Riss erscheint mir die Fläche zu eben. Viele Grüße, Jürgen

alles gut und schön aber das gelbe Ritzel ist gebrochen und muss ersetzt werden. Diese bekommt man bei Ebay. Kleber kann tötlich für das Zählwerk sein und sollte niemals benutzt werden auch das ankneifen der Ritzelwelle sollte unterlassen werden. Ein neues Ritzel sitzt vollkommen fest.
