This man has made my whole life much much richer than it ever could have been had he not come into the world. Thanks John and I'll be looking out for you when my own time comes along.
When I was 18, back in the late 90s, I got to see Mr Hartford live. I'm so grateful because he went to Heaven a couple years later. It was hilarious when hjm and the band played The Hokey Pokey as a young adult lol hehehehe ❤
I've always loved John Hartford, from the first time I saw him perform with Glen Campbell on Glen's Good Time Hour. I got to see him perform, right at the edge of the small outdoor stage on Navy Pier at Chicago Fest in about 1978. He performed solo and joined with Sam Bush and the New Grass Revival. i took some great 35mm photos of that show. As a musician myself (guitar, classical guitar, lute, etc.) I have much admiration and respect for John. May he rest in peace. Amen.
@@ilovemypugdog He looked all right. I had no idea that he was ill at the time. I took a video of him performing a few tunes on banjo and fiddle right there in front of me. He was just wonderful.
They absolutely don’t make them like that anymore! Love that man and miss him terribly! His music, talent, voice, and storytelling changed me deep inside forever, and my life is the richer for it. A legend.
Sorry 1lawman...it is the TWILIGHT of Galena, IA. Capt. John was very good friends with the late Capt Dennis Trone who built and owned the boat...and as a passenger of the baot and a friend of both these late rivermen I can assure you it was filmed on the TWILIGHT.
He just had a way of getting out of himself and just wanted to give to other people. Golly gee Ned as a friend of mine used to say..., Nevermind they'll never be another like him,... Hell,. We owe it to John to carry on with his songs,.by gum, Mississippi,.
@@michaeltreadway5420 ... If that was the PBS documentary related to Oh Brother Where Art Thou, yes, but not in a while. Thanks for the reminder. I wish public TV had filmed John the one time I saw him solo in person, late 1970s in Hartford Connecticut's Busnell Park, a couple of miles from Mark Twain's house and in the shadow of those "tall buildings" he sang about unhappy folks working in.
"They just won't play, just won't play, just won't play, just won't play, just won't play, just won't play, just won't play, just won't play, just won't play, just won't play, no more!"

Thanks for sharing that, man. I agree with you, he certainly can make me smile when life throws us around.

The world is a grayer, duller place without John in it.
Johnny was also the finest of all the riverboat captains, if you notice, he never takes his eyes off it... what an amazing guy!
Applies to any Pilot or Captain anywhere in the world. I speak from 21 years experience as a sea Captain and 36 years as a River Pilot

This is priceless footage, thanks.
I had the pleasure to see John Hartford perform on the Julia Belle Swain in 1989. What a joy!
Did he appear healthy? I read he had lymmphoma at that time.

I will never get tired of watching John Hartford talk about river boats.
thanks for the glimpse wish i could see him work the wheel for the whole interview.
One of my favorite musicians my whole life, I just never knew it.
Talking to the old people.... He's not one of them as he is and will always be timeless..... His spirit is hovering over that river.
He was about the best there was!
I could listen to him sing or talk for eternity!
(If I'm really good... maybe I will.)
How cool was this guy? So glad I saw him perform. Rest easy, great man.
This might be my favorite cover of one of my very favorite of John's songs. Thanks for doing such a nice job with it!
I hope those people realize how lucky they were to be there for that performance.
A true American treasure. They hardly make them like that anymore.

Like a car starting up on a cold morning...😂

During the Video, John said he is on the Twilight. I really enjoyed this video, would have liked to seen more.
Thanks!

Where do we get the rest of this PBS film? Was it national or local in Kentucky, Missouri or Tennessee? What was the title and year? Please?!
Bob that's a great question Sir. I'm on the hunt now. Have you seen "Down from the mountain" performance at the opry?

I think he's on the ghastly propeller driven Twilight vs the beautiful steam powered Julia Belle
Steam is better for powering aereo planes.
thank you
Steam Boat Stuff 🎶🎵🎶

Rubber bow> rubber pencil
They'll warp and they won't be good for anyone

One of my biggest regrets in life is that I never went on one of the John Hartford Riverboat cruises......
I very much wish the powers that be at UA-cam would bring back "Banjoes, Fiddles, and Riverboats"
