  • This video is to try and help Crazy D. He has a Case with a bad Mag. Its easy to install a 12 volt coil and get really powerful spark. We hope this helps.

You know, I've managed to work all these years on old tractors and stuff and keep my knowledge of magnetos at a minimum !! I DO have several daily drivers that have good hot mags and am lucky for that. But this is a good remedy for one that has failed. Its getting pretty hard to find guys to rebuild them anyway. Thanks for providing me good info on making this work !!

Hope it helps others. When I was pretty little my Father had a David Bradley garden Tractor. It had a model Z Brigg's engine. The coil went bad. And a new one cost over $50 way back then. My brother was working on it. And Him and Dad rigged up a coil on it. made a battery box for the battery. That battery was as large as the Briggs engine. Thats the first time I seen a mag ignition converted to a battery sparked .

This could be taken one step further...
Wire the points to trigger a switching transistor, or a common "junkyard" ignition module.
The solid state switch takes the high-current switching duty away from the points, they will last almost indefinitely. Also, since the points aren't switching the coil directly, a modern "hot" non resistor coil can be utilized.

Yes and that would make it more efficient. And would be worth doing if you where actually working the tractor for many hours at a time.

Thank you for showing us how to do this! I've heard a couple of Old-Timers talk about something like this but they didn't want to share the details. That's alright how many magneto thing tonight we're going to own. Now that I own three tractors with Magneto's, I guess we've answered that question of owning something with a magneto. Contractor has been started in 15 years. Another tractor I know it's a magneto. It quit running and has lost its spark. So thank you and I'm saving this one for my library. Also thanks for letting me know about crazy Dave I used to watch him regularly and somehow got off the schedule. I'm sorry to hear he's having difficulties. Purple wave probably be pretty good to him. I hope that his sale turns out good for him.

We converted the Mag on a H farmall more than 60 years ago. And I have done quite a few over the decades. Most mags just get marginal with age.

We had a great weekend. And did not do anything that require us to mix the lime in the coconut and shake it all up!

That's like getting someone to stick there tongue to a little 9 volt, you can get them to do it once. Lol. Have a good day

Back when I was a teen I had a buzzing model T coil. I would charge up condenser's. and leave them laying out. Eventually some one would pick one up and get a good jolt.

Of course the coil connections assume it's a negative ground system.
