  • Why did it take the Fairy Godmother 19 years to come to Cinderella's aide? I have a theory, so let's talk about the 1950 animated classic.

    If Cinderella had a Fairy Godmother, why did is take nearly two decades for her to show up and help fix Cinderella's life? Was the Fairy Godmother busy helping other people? Does she just have crazy good timing? Or, was she working in the shadows for Cinderella's entire life?

    Maybe the fairy godmother WASN'T around all the time, she just saw what happened and decided that she deserved a little magic as a reward for remaining hopeful, kind and resourceful (these qualities are said to be very valued by fairies) as for the spell breaking at midnight, she tells us (if I recall correctly) that when the bells strike at midnight, the spell will break; in folklore, bells were known for undoing fairy magic, either because they were church bells (and the church disliked the belief in fairies and other pagan stuff), because the bells were made of iron (and iron hurt fairies), because they were marking the time of the human world (wich somehow reinforces traditional reality) or all of the above, in other words, the bells would break the spell regardles of the godmother's desires and she just warned Cinderella of that fact.

      But wouldn't the bells toll at 11 and 10 as well... so every hour her spell would have dealt with the bells I think it makes more sense that she planned it so that Cinderella would be more desirable because she ran away...

    My theory that is that Fairy Godmother always have been there around Cinderella's life, however, isn't able to to materialize because "power of belief" at mature age. At some point, Fairy Godmother give young Cinderella the ability to talk with little animals such as the mices.
    Another thing to point out is that she is a FAIRY. Fairies are usually know as being that have their own goals than others and have decietful nature.

    This time period/world had many women's best prospect of being married off. Fairy Godmother helped Cinderella marry the most powerful family in the land. Running off or fighting her mother would have ended up with her in the streets and homeless or sent to prison. A 'Mulan' of that time would have to live as a boy or become a secret bandit.

      But even if you remove the Fairy Godmother from the equation, Cinderella is perfect to a fault, so she wouldn't steal to end up in jail. Best case scenario someone would see her face and marry her immediately. Worse case scenario someone would see her face and snap her up as a nanny or maid. Either way, her beauty held huge amounts of power to where she wouldn't have suffered if she ran away (there's a reason Tremaine kept her locked up inside and dirty).

    I really don't like when people say Cinderella wasn't a strong female character. She's extremely strong, it takes so much to have to put up with what Cinderella had to. Given the time she really had no other options besides trying her luck on her own which would have likely made her homeless or led her to become a prostitute. Having to live somewhere where you're treated like a slave and have no voice is extremely difficult (trust me..been there) and she takes it remarkably well. She bides her time until the proper opportunity comes along and then quickly grabs onto that lifeboat. She wasn't weak, she was intelligent and brave. Having to put up with abuse doesn't make one weak, but surviving it does make one stronger.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  4 роки тому

      Ummm... I left a physically abusive marriage and slept in my car to get away. So YES it is possible to leave and not become a prostitute or permanently homeless. Leaving is strength because you don't know what will happen. Doing nothing and waiting for the world to save you is absolutely a horrible message to spoon feed children. This "for her time" stuff is nonsense too because it's a movie with talking animals and magic, so it's not historically accurate to begin with. Even a slightly independent woman who spoke back shouldn't be shocking, but Cinderella had to fit the bill for what a perfect woman was supposed to be - pretty and silent.

    • @MoiraMcGill
      @MoiraMcGill 4 роки тому +4

      @@TheFangirlWatches while i get and understand, even somewhat agree with what you say, it's much more complicated than you're making it out to be. While living in a car is considered homeless, it's still a relatively safe shelter and with modern means it can be made to work for a temporary time. Cinderella doesn't have any of that. Even in modern times it would be difficult to leave a relationship where you'd end up homeless, without any shelter, and expect to hold down a job. It can be doable but extremely difficult depending on the circumstances. If you work with people on a daily basis in close proximity then being homeless could cause you to lose your job if you can't keep up with smelling adequate enough and making sure your clothes stay fresh smelling (remember, you don't have access to a bath nor washing units). Perhaps you had friends to help you out during that time so that way you could be presentable for a job, not lose it, and be able to save up enough to get back on your feet, but that's all highly circumstantial. Not everyone will have access to the same help. Cinderella appears to know *no one* besides her step family so who would she have to turn to for aid? Once on the streets during that time, it was incredibly difficult to leave that situation. It may be harder to sympathise with her given out modern means, which we take for granted, but that doesn't mean we should victim blame her for being somewhat reasonable. Maybe if her situation was physically abusive like yours was then she'd have more reason to leave...but they're just making her do chores....and emotionally abusing her. That's something that one can, with good resolve, wait out for the proper moment to escape. As said before, I did the same thing. Was actually weirdly similar to Cinderella's situation, minus the fairytale ending, so maybe that's why i can relate so much. Stuck in a relatively unfamiliar city/town with no one you know, stuck at home doing chores, not able to look for other work due to circumstance, emotionally abused, *no car* nor other back up pseudoshelter...that severely limits options. It's easy to say "that's just an excuse" or "there are other options" when you're an outsider looking in or have been in a similarish situation but with different resources available for you. Sometimes the "other options" come along after a bit. For me, it took about a year of biding my time and planning. It's not like i was just sitting around waiting, and the same could have been for Cinderella (i.e. the points you yourself make in the video regarding why she may have been so optimistic for a while). Don't mistake rationality and strategy for complacency. There are many ways to be strong in an abusive situation, just like there are many types of abusive situations and each have their own solution. Trying to box them into simple answers is like trying to standardise children, there can be a general base but the details differ and as such require different approaches. I'm not saying that biding ones time is ideal nor that one should try and stay with an abuser, I'm just pointing out that it isn't all black and white and each situation needs to be dealt with in a way that is realistic to the specific situation - especially when the person literally has nothing.

      Cinderella wasn't abused her entire life, only for the last 10 years since her father died. So she knows love and kindness, which means she also knows how she's being treated now isn't right. Cinderella staying only makes sense if she never knew affection, and her beauty would get her easily married if she left home. Even if she didn't find a husband right away, she someone would take her for a maid or nanny just to look at her. People left their homes forever on a whim back then, so staying put is actually less realistic. As someone who was beaten and lived in my car to get away - while still attending college full time - I will wholeheartedly disagree that there are no options for abuse victims. That's only true if you're willing to put up with the abuse because you're too afraid of making a change.

      @@TheFangirlWatches as someone who left an abusive relationship I feel you are being unfair. I am glad you found the ability and path to leave, but not everyone copes, processes and deals the same. I know it is hard looking in, but judging those trapped (physically, emotionally, financially, psycholically, or anyway). Yes she knew affection and love, and knew this was not how she wanted be or felt she deserved, but she was 9 when her father died, a child. I understand the idea of poisoning the step mother, but I also appreciate her not compromising her own values. It is not a perfect movie by any means, but there are no real perfect ways to depict something as horrendous and personal as abuse. Sorry, but a. I agree that the take had a point, especially within the realms of children's media and b. A lot also comes out of how we interact with media with our children. She is in a horrible situation, she preserves herself until finding an opportunity and seizing it, she wasn't "waiting for her prince to come" as is often touted. She had values and she lived them. And that is the context within which the character is discussed with my children, for all her love of the classic disney princesses, a damsel in distress waiting for her prince is not the defining character trait my daughter subsequently identifies, values or seeks to emulate.

    Disney's WISH may tell something about Cinderella's Fairy God Mother

  • @Thrakus
    @Thrakus 3 роки тому

    Cinderella ends up with the soon to be king so she had to wait for her to be of age and him to be of the right age , If she did mess this up she could have been like 6 with the king. They did do live with until of age and still do in some parts of the world but it never works out as the guy never waits like 12 years. but she did give her the talking mice so she was helping.

  • @LunaP1
    @LunaP1 4 роки тому +1

    You may be right about the mice being imbued with magic. They usually speak to Cinderella all the time and she can understand them. In the third movie, they go to the prince because Cinderella is in danger of being sent away permanently. And surprisingly, he can understand them as well. If it hadn’t been for that, Cinderella would’ve been lost and the price would’ve married the wrong girl.

      That's assuming the wand magic wouldn't have worn off before the wedding lol. If it didn't, then that would be solid proof that the Fairy Godmother could have done better for Cinderella.

    I like your theories. Have you ever watched the movie "The Magic Riddle"? It's basically a Cinderella interpretation with other fairy tales mixed in. The step mother has a magic mirror like the queen from Snow White, Cindy befriends a group of dwarves and so on. It is some kind of a parody, but I believe it's well done. Some people don't like it but I loved it as a kid and would like to know what others think about it, no matter if positive or negative.

    They would definitely try to use "Cinderella's magic" at any cost

  • @sunnysidesouffle8348
    @sunnysidesouffle8348 4 роки тому

    I thought maybe she showed up do to opportunity.
    She didn't use magic to change Cinderella's life but gave her the tools to better it herself.
    Due to the time and the fact that it was a small kingdom without many options there was never a good opportunity for Cinderella to escape and live a better life. If she tried she could have been living in poverty or worse. If she tried to marry she would need the family's approval and Lady Tremayne would never let Cinderella marry before her daughters, let alone allow her a prosperous match.
    Now giving Cinderella the tools to win a prince or nobleman at the ball, that family would have a high enough status to take Cinderella away without Lady Tremayne's blessing.
    I think the fairy godmother waited to give her the best opportunity of a good future. But the reason the magic wasn't permanent was because Cinderella had to earn that life for herself with her own merits.

  • @joanahkirk338

    I look at Cinderella as a wish fulfillment story, where the sort of person you'd hope would find a happy ending gets the happy ending. Though certainly at the time Cinderella was meant to be a role model when... you should not be complacent with abuse. I mean, sure, there's not much Cinderella could realistically do to get out of that situation at that time, though that's still not a great example. At least this version isn't, as Cinderella here never really does anything to fight back, that is until the very end when she defies Lady Tremaine by trying on the Glass Slipper, but that's a bit small. It is still a good lesson that you should be a good person despite being in a rough situation, but that doesn't mean be complacent with abuse.

    • @MissCaraMint
      @MissCaraMint 4 роки тому

      The problem with saying that Cinderella has a bad message about abuse is that there are small things Cinderella herself does do that rebel against her step family. Things like rescuing the mice. It very clear that Cinderella is rescuing them from traps and the like, and it's not like she puts those out herself so we must assume that one of her step family does as there are no servants as far as we can see. The sisters are too silly for that so it Must be Lady Tremaine herself. If so that really shows that there is more going on than just Cinderella cleaning or dreaming. She is deliberately defying her step mother. Then she actually has the courage to go to the ball even when she's been not just banned from going but has been utterly humiliated just a short while earlier. This is a girl who has very very little choice about the situation she is in, but the minute she get's a chance she does rebel, and is rewarded for doing so. First the mice she's been secretly saving make a dress for her, then when she sneaks out defying the abusers wishes she is able to meet someone who can hep her out of her situation all together. She is the one to barge into that room where her step sisters are trying on the shoes and announce that she want's to try it on, again taking a chance, and succeeding.

  • @amaliapursell
    @amaliapursell 2 роки тому

    But! What if she is actually the prince's fairy godmother. He is royalty, more likely to have contact with fairies a la sleeping beauty. She finds him a girl of good breeding who doesnt act like the other aristocrats, and arranges for the magic to wear off right in time for him to get rejected, knowing he is used to attention being lavished on him.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  3 роки тому

      I can see trauma with her dad dying and her life getting flipped upside down, but I'm not sure if abuse is present. They make Cinderella a servant, and it sucks, but, until the end, I don't recall anyone locking her up or trying to hit her. In fact, Cinderella is the one who stole from her stepsisters knowing it would set them off (okay, REALLY it was the mice, but who's going to believe that mice did it?). And she does fight with the girls several times, which shows she's not afraid of anyone other than Lady Tremaine.

      Yves Forbes Flores There’s a theory that says that she’s the Blue Fairy from Disney’s Pinocchio (albeit older). In the remake, it’s theorised that she was the one who cursed the Beast in Beauty and the Beast because she approaches Ella in her darkest moment disguised as an old lady, tests Ella and shows herself when she shows her personality.

  • @tourmaverse
    @tourmaverse 4 роки тому

    If the life action remake is any indication, then I think the fairy godmother was watching over her, but only came into action, when she was truly needed.
    A friend of mine also had a theory, that the fairy godmother arranged everything, like making the stepmother evil via magic spell in order for all of the things in the movie to happen for potentially her own entertainment.
    (I have to say the latter one is a bit of a joke theory though.)

  • @oneheckofabanana2016

    The Godmother is just a stupid ass pull. They should just have made Cinderella solve the problems herself with her friends. I like that she made a dress, then got it ripped up by her sister, and then had the animals make another dress for her. It made sense that they would do that without it being too predictable and it makes it seem earned because the animals helped her because she always took her of them. But that Godmother just shows up out of thin air and was a total ass pull, seemingly just because Disney always wants paranormal phenomena in their movies.

    The biggest question I have about this movie is instead of creating more work for himself and going around to each house in search of Cinderella, why didn’t he just call everybody back to the castle and have each person try it on? Also wouldn’t it have made more sense to look for the person who has the other slipper instead going around having each person try on the one that he currently had? Like I said it just feels like the prince was creating more work for himself with this plan. Also, why were the slippers the only thing that didn’t disappear when the magic wore off?

    • @kristinahuchison2511

      Probably thought there was more than 1 pair of that shoe. Plus back then women had custom made shoes for such events that specifically fit them. It also would’ve been informal to have all these women corralled back into the throne room just to find the right girl.
      My biggest gripe is the prince doesn’t actually go out himself to find her, literally left it up to the Grand Duke instead and doesn’t even give a physical description to help narrow the search either, as obviously shown in Cinderella 3. Heck the Grand Duke and King even saw him choosing her! And the Grand Duke saw her as she fled! How the f*ck he didn’t remember she was a blonde at the very damn least. When he sees her trotting down the stairs he simply sees that she’s the most beautiful woman he’s seen thus far instead of saying “Its you! You’re the one dancing with the prince!” 🙄

    Could it be possible that as well as what you said she had other god children to help as well. Plus she could be the reason Cinderella can understand the mice it could have been her blessing to Ella maybe lady tarmaine or one of her daughters is another god daughter of her’s and she was doing a killing two birds with one stone by having lady tarmaine and lord tarmaine(?) meet so both of said god daughters could have a complete family.

  • @hyenacub
    @hyenacub 4 роки тому

    Cinderella was just a little kid when Tremaine began being abusive if I remember right--I would like to hope the fairy godmother did not choose to not interfere right away when there was a child being abused. Maybe her attention was not brought to the situation until the day she intervened...maybe it's just as simple as that.

    Remember the Fairy Godmother's magic is temporary. So sending her off to magically live a better life wouldn't work. She could only open up the path. Cinderella had to do the rest herself along with keeping the other slipper safe. Which allowed her to get picked as the prince's new bride.
