I love this dress too. Just a few changes, I would add a bedazzled choker necklace and make the folds of the dress a little bit sharper maybe add some wiring to the skirt so they stand out more. I would also add a train and have the dress be a dark shade of purple like in the promo photo.
When my dad and ex-boyfriend found out that Billy was the "Fabulous Godmother" the question they asked me and my mother (Respectively to who they were asking) was why Billy Porter was the Fairy Godmother. My mother told my dad "Because in 2021 if anyone was going to be the fairy godmother, Billy Porter makes 100% perfect sense, and you better not let your daughter hear that, she loves billy porter." And I told my boyfriend: "First of all he's the FABULOUS godmother, not "fairy" that's too generic for Billy Porter. Second of all, he's radiant, and amazing so, of course, he's the Fabulous Godmother! It makes perfect sense!" Along with a long tangent about how amazing Billy Porter is. We called my parents later that day and before my ex ould warn my dad, he asked the question and they both had to hear my very long tangent about how and why it makes sense. My mom told my dad, "I told you so." after I was done.

I somewhat agree, but I also somewhat disagree. Gender is a category that is hard to define in certain things like entertainment. RuPaul is a drag queen, but he's a cis-gender gay man. He still goes by the title of Queen or Mother, but that's because it's drag and he's known for drag. For Billy Porter, he's known for blurring the lines of gender in dress and performance, but he's not specifically known for drag, so that's why it might be a bit more confusing with him instead of with RuPaul. Plus, Billy Porter has a beard while Ru doesn't, and Ru might look more natural in a wig, but seeing Billy without a wig to signify "godmother" might be also confusing.
However, just looking at this movie as an adaptation and not a remake of the original Cinderella movie (especially with all the pop songs), anything goes at this point. This rule definitely applies to Broadway when men can play women's roles and women can play men's roles simply because it's theater. A black Ariel, Elphaba, or Elsa is just fine on stage and is even accepted as a nice change. Yet, cinema isn't quite the same as the stage, so I can understand why you aren't keen on the change. But just keep in mind that this isn't a remake of the Disney original so it's not required to be exactly the same in every aspect. Hence, the slim, black man instead of a corpulent, white woman.
As for the role title of "Godmother," I agree that that's a bit confusing when drag is not part of the expectation and isn't associated with Billy Porter as much. Thus, "Godparent" would do wonderfully, and that's exactly what Billy Porter is working towards in the next adaptation, according to the video description. I'm not so sure about "Godfather" since that would invoke an image of a man in a suit when Billy is a man in a dress, so I would think Godparent would be better of a description.

ORRRRRR (Which is probably likely) there is an effort being made to normalize this behavior for whatever reason. Casting a man to play a fairy godMOTHER is weird and simply incorrect. Billy can be Billy, that's completely fine. However, leave the kids out of the gender bending BS. They have a hard enough time remembering how to spell their names and count to 10.
