  • Can life drawing help us break free from harmful beauty standards? What does an artist really think when they see a naked body? Artist Gail Reid explores how art can foster a positive body image and celebrate the diversity of humanity in all its wonderful forms.
Gail is a professional figurative artist, using traditional materials and methods to create contemporary work. She often has clients model in her Bristol studio and her work has a strong focus on identity and embracing every wrinkle and line that truly makes us unique.
Gail's work has been displayed far and wide and she was even a semi-finalist on Sky Arts “Portrait Artist Of The Year 2023”. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thanks Gail for an inspiring talk. I could relate to your every word. I kinda fell into life modelling when I was 57. Having spent a lifetime being terribly self conscious and being uncomfortable in my body at last I am able to celebrate my uniqueness through taking my clothes off. It is great to be appreciated - life drawers are THE most friendly bunch. Of course I still have moments when I ‘hate’ parts of me particularly my ageing belly but I quickly shake that off. I love and celebrate my ‘best’ parts - I am terribly fond of my bum! And funnily enough I love my knees. I appreciate my body in a way I never used to. I have a confidence I never had. I am passionate about natural hair. If you secretly feel like life modelling I would say go for it. It’s an experience like no other x

Wow, excellent talk. So moving from this Morris minor. Who unfortunately still feels like he needs a panel beater and respray sometimes. Been , what nearly 4 years since my attempt at gladiatorial pose. Never regretted it for one moment , a path walked with a great artist and brilliant human being. Could only have been better if it was live, so many thanks. And keep going. Fantastic.

It was from Mango. I had to get Size XXL, which a) wasn't in the store, and b) says alot about their sizing system.
