Actually in a sort of perverse way< i'm enjoying the current (2023) era of ML the most.
The price increases in 2022 and the windowless packaging/lowered QC made me dial it way down in terms of ML collecting, and it's been very refreshing. When you're a collector for a given line, you have this mindset that locks you into trying to buy as many of the figures as possible, hence "collecting". But once you're out of it, you are free to pick and choose like an outsider.
ML right now has some of the best figures in its history. The new Black Widow on that highly articulated body is a good example. It's like a gold nugget in a sea of shit, so you just pluck it out and be happy.

Great analysis of the latest years of Marvel Legends. The price value increase , the less deco details , less paints and simplistic molds sometimes, the not so good created windowless packaging and the mcu focus lines did a lot of bad input to the line. I may undeterstqnd that some people want to see what they get on tv or in the movies but comics characters first , back to basis and more fun and somehow they seem to have lost it and as a collector also I seem to have less fun doing so. I collect less and less marvel legends focusing on other lines like G.I.Joe ‘s , MOTU masterverse or even DC Mc Farlane stuff. All seem to have something that is not working the way it used to. The increase of price value of the toys is a great example, you won’t buy so easily a 30 $figure as you used to with a 19 $ figure . You could buy a set for lower price but now box sets at 70 or 80 $ are far too expensive for what we get with that. And we get less details paint in the characters it’s disappointing ( I won t even mention SW Black Series where they have quite zero options with their figures) … it can seem negative but let’s just hope it stands something positive out of this where they will react and provide something new more attractive to the fans we are not just cash machines buying it all with closed eyes we want fun too and lately it seems most of us don’t have that much fun anymore

It was fun hunting for figures back in those days. When you find something like Mysterio, Beast, or Cyclops and Jean 2 pack it feels like treasure in your hand. Now with the quality going down, price going up, and windowless package all the excitement is gone. Bought very few this year and have moved on to GI Joe Classified line.

I think 2019 was the peak. For me, things started going downhill after the pandemic hit. The last wave I remember being truly impressed with was the Super Skrull wave that came out in December 2019/January 2020. I think character selection has been stronger in 2023 than 2020, 2021, or 2022, but value has tanked with less paint, less accessories, and figures going on clearance left and right. I also don’t think you can understate the positive impact an ascending MCU had on the line or the negative impact a descending MCU has had on the line.

@@leyenda6149 I swear I’m not making this up, but Black Tom was my “What happened to this line?!?” moment as well. He was near the top of my most wanted villains list because he was always paired withJuggernaut in the early years of the Claremont/Cockrum/Byrne run, but I remember getting him and thinking “This has got to be the most boring ML figure I’ve ever seen.” Granted, he’s not the most visually stunning character to begin with, but the figure had absolutely no personality. The magic was definitely gone. She-Hulk and Doom, though? Man. Two of the best MLs ever made in my book!

Legends were fun because they produced the most character variation and the price points were reasonable when they ranged between 14.99-19.99. Once they breached the $21.99 the value was no longer there. Im glad my kids were young and got to play with these figs during the peak of the line. I didnt buy 1 ML between 2020-2022 and just bought my first legends last week on clearance for $9.99. Will only purchase ML on sale or clearance prices. I rather purchase an import fig nowadays. 2019/2020 is the best IMO. 80th anniversary line: one of the best like still not the best versions of spectacular/classic characters IMO definetly best part of 2019. X-men 20th anniversary, finally after so many years fox movie x-men and really cool rerelases, first appearance of retro spider-man wave, BIG Haslab Sentinel, some deluxe figures, war machine, punisher on motorcycle, Monster Venom, really cool mcu 2packs, movie venom and first appearance of one of the best ML bodymolds of all time, Venompool. Absolute carnage still the best one by hasbro, retro x-men first time, Best dr doom still, and super skrull.
But I was really tempted to choose 21/22 cause continuation of retro spider-man line and maaaan what good figures we had: Lizard, sandman, rhino, symbiote spidey, animated series Venom, shocker, hammerhead etc. But mainly: Spider-man 60th anniversary line. Man that was one of dream come true, after almost perfect retro spidey we finally got BEST Spider-man of all time the RyV one with really cool spinneret, amazing fantasy, Animated series spidey, japanese, silk and ock, iron spider, knull and best venom of all time . Second best venom from 3pack XD, Mojo what a cool deluxe, VHS x-men and best tiger stripe wolverine of all time AGAIN XD. Marvel legends 20th anniversary such a cool line, hulk cool upgrade, perfect captain america except shield but f it. Iron man which was fine and after 20 years Finally Toad ! Beast with labcoat. cool single releases jigsaw, baron zemo, Modular Iron man turned into capcom/cartoon I love it, The best daredevil by far in this scale, GORR I was really hyped (still have to get him tho XD)
2022 is like second best ML year IMO. but Hobgoblin disappointment I still can't forgive them about this one. Man I was so pissed. and 2021 which wasn't that bad that was wave of villains: Thanos, MODOK, Ultron, Lady Deathstrike,. A wolverine 5pack. Finally battle damaged wolverine, cool omega red upgrade, cyber etc.., IRON MAN Wave modular, iron heart, stealth, cool baf goddamn ursa major and infinity saga wave was really fine I liked it. Surtur, Quicksilver, Final battle thanos and iron man, iron monger, such a good iron man mark 3 finally, warrior endgame thor.
So I can say last 4 years were so good, and I wouldn't put a cross on 2023, still it Didn't end and we did get so cool figures:
animated ock with finally freakin bendy wired tentacles, now green goblin which looks really dope for me, BLOB, Ronan, Extremis Iron man , Ultimate cap technically even better one than previous, 3 Movie spider-men and there is still no way home wave waiting for us, Avengers anniversary line is SIC. Iron man model 1, PERFECT Black widow and hawkeye, Ant man, destroyer, first appearance hulk and banner, still really liked New Gamerverse Peter Parker that's what I expected and I got it only pissed cause no full sets of hands. Joe Fixit, Really like they rerelased gladiator hulk, now newly announced deadpool and bob. I think this year has more to offer and there are still cool things waiting for us.
okay that's enough I said what I wanted XD

With the exception of the new Hawkeye and Black Widow, there's really no need to keep collecting the same characters again and again. Now it's really about getting the last c list characters such as Karnak or Star jammers. I think what has needed to be done has been done. Factor in the cost and shenanigans of Hasbro and im done.

I would say when they priced hiked ML to Twenty-two dollars with out advancing there bodies and the repeated using old bodies for new characters and not getting rid of pin’s and not completing teams promptly, as well as QC issue’s with poor painting and dry brushing issues,as well as repeated re-issues’s of the same characters over and over we didn’t need that many Wolverines, Cap’s, Iron Man, Thor’s etc , etc with out progressing the line so I say after 2021

Personally, 2014-2018 was peak legends. Every wave was a banger then. Oddly enough, I think it went a little downhill after TRU closed. That was always where I got all my legends at. Never had any issues finding any of the figures till they closed. That was also a time when marvel legends were decently priced and came with a decent amount of accessories. Nowadays, we’re lucky to get alternate hands with figures. I saw tarantula today, and I wanted him, but put him back because he’s $25 with 0 accessories. I still love legends, but the rising prices, reuses, and little to no accessories has hindered my love of them.

Never had to worry about chasing things I couldn’t find, scalpers, or sellouts.

After my brother and I collected all the Toybiz characters we could ever want. I was not impressed with Hasbro's take. They did not have the paint or sculpt detail I was used to.
The thing that got me into modern Marvel Legends was a review Shartimus Prime did of the Tiger stripe Wolverine. When I saw how well it scaled with the other figures, it had my interest.
When Jubilee was announced, I had confidence Hasbro was going to make all the 1990s X-men. SO I think the Caliban Wave is my favorite year. The fun I get from collecting Hasbro Marvel Legends is team building figures that are all in scale with each other.

It’s been almost a year since I bought a figure and since 2021 I have not completed a single wave. But I moved on, there are other lines that make your money’s worth, just my humble opinion, Hasbro’s Marvel Legends isn’t that for me anymore and it’s sad because I used to love this line. Instead of peak years, we should consider peak pricing. When you could get an entire wave plus a BAF for under $100, there is definitely value there. Even if you didn't care for 1 or 2 figures, you still had value because the BAF.
Then Hasbro got greedy as well as stupid. Stupid because of the decision to remove the window. Greedy because not only did they go up in price, but they also gave us fewer paint apps, fewer accessories, all on repainted molds.
Couple those issues with the fact that they keep giving us the same characters over and over again or just characters that no one really wants.
You release X-men teams all in their swaggy blue and yellow. You even give us Forge. The question is....how and why do you give me Forge but not Bishop or Cable?
Hasbro just has some really bad people making the final decisions. For the $22-$28 bland, boring, and overly priced Legend figure, I'd much rather take that money and get a highly detailed, original sculpt via Mythic Legions. No nostalgia, but still cool!!

I got into collecting action figures in mid 2020, and I'm 100% pro DC over Marvel if I could only choose one. I not only missed out on some of those first McFarlane figures, but by the time I got into Legends (mid 2021), it obviously seems from the perspective of a longtime collector that I literally got into it right at the start of the decline. I managed to get some older figures loose, but most of my nearly 100 Legends figures are 2020 releases or newer. I'm pretty happy with what I've got. I've managed to get most of the characters I wanted, but watching videos like this, and seeing how horrible Hasblow has been to us really makes me glad that I could more or less get in on the ground floor with a new line of DC figures, the characters I'm far more invested in. I do think McFarlane has been making better figures since day one, but his is an ever improving line. With more modern bodies closer to the nice Japanese imports and Legends seemingly stuck a decade in the past, combined with Hasblow's near evil business decisions, it wasn't hard for McFarlane to easily surpass them as the best manufacturer of superhero action figures. Much better sculpt and textures, larger scale for easier handling, more solid construction (less gummy), now with more accessories and alternate parts, less reuse, keeping prices down (barring some Collector Editions, literally six figures), less figures required for BAF, and a very quickly expanding character roster have made me overwhelmingly happy I got into action figures at just the right time.

I suppose no matter when you enter a hobby, you will always be "1 year too late". For a lot of people, some of these new figures are their first one of that character. I have a list of figures I'm waiting for in Legends, but when I look at what's coming out soon, I'm infinitely more excited about McFarlane DC than Legends. They've really fallen hard! Hasblow really is pricing their customers out, and to higher quality toys. Why not just pay the difference and get a far superior S.H. Figuarts for better articulation, build quality, and extra goods?

Not always perfect but they were willing to give us updated characters we needed from the Toybiz era along with new characters in the line. Sadly I think the pandemic and licensing created excuses to charge as much as they could for as little effort as they can do. And seeing other companies deliver more in the past couple years hasn’t helped Hasbro either.

The popular characters have been made at this point. Wishlist are much shorter nowadays so Hasbro has now resorted to super deepcut characters and newer modern characters and modern costumes for characters we have less attachment to. MCU characters are also being put in costumes no one asked for just to sell another figure. Hasbro has now resorted to forcing less desirable reissued figures into multipacks with a figure you want. 2022 and 2023 have too many examples of this. All of this is on top of the price hikes and inconsistent pricing as well as less accessories and paint. At this point, Hasbro's best offering and value is G.I. Joe Classified. Enjoy Joe's while it lasts because sooner or later, that to will also have the same fate as Marvel Legends.
