I was thinking the same thing. It took me a while to figure it out but I think it's because the new designs are lacking the thief aspect to them. All the canon theives tend to wear dark (or darker for Ann's red suit) clothes with little that dangles off (exclusiving small things like Yusuke's tail and Makoto's scarf) Akechi was a major exception to this, and that was because he was meant to stand out, he was the star of the show, a public figure compared to the theives so he's all white. A lot of the new theived are here in bright colors and almost casual clothes
This is exactly how I'm feeling with these new characters. I would probably like them if they were their own in P6, but squeezing them further into the P5verse just makes them forgettable to me.

Yeah, P4 and P5 allude to Personas being a very rare ability that the majority of people don't possess while P3 outright states that even fewer of the small minority that do have the potential are able to realize/manifest the power of a Persona. 16+ persona users is A LOT by lore standards and there's a reason the games usually cap it around 12. Having 16 new characters on top of old ones makes it feel a lot less rare and not as special as the previous games made it out to be.

Best guess Sumi is a single target slash DPS with high crit stats, Sophia is bless healer, Zenkichi is slash DPS with self raising stat skills/passives, Toshiro (with Erina/Ernesto) as gun support.

If these translations i looked up are to be trusted, only 4 of these are real, the rest are some copied cogntions based off people the protagonist interacts with in the real world, with the exception of the OG Phantom Thieves, because you know, fan service.
i think is was great add some social links to become phantom thieves too, like: mishima, the doc, maruki, maybe sojiro in some way lol and iwa(? (like my dude shoot whit a rocket launcher haha)
Some of these designs look kinda unfinished, like they should be concept art, not the final 3D rendered models. I mean look at 2:46, 3:45 or 6:17, those look boring, something's just missing here. On the other hand, 0:57, 4:57 or 5:24 look really nice and creative. I wonder if there were different artists working on the character designs o.o Edit: The Persona designs look cool though
