Ngl I used to hate text-to-speech voices and thought this guy was using one. But I really liked the content, so I kept watching and found out that this is his actual voice, which kinda grew on me by that point.
I've a theory here. Curtis was a hound, It's stated in the original short story that a hound got away, we could assume that a creature of pure filth that found a way to cleanse itself would probably fear it's brethren and attempt to cleans a space so thoroughly that they can't reach him. Hounds of Tinnalos kill at least in part by draining the blood from their victims, thus the bones and the constant drinking, the inky mark on the ground could very well be a doorway that was opened and let the "doppelganger" or another hound out to hunt. On the other hand Curtis could just have seen into the corners and lost himself to it.
Something I noticed about Reese: There might be a connection between how he was the only one not sick, the first to lose faith, the morse code video, and his seemingly prophetic visions
25:46 Curtis states his "old old him" inhabited a form that is impossible to describe in a language humans can hear. 13:54 The Hounds of Tindalos are beings that are impossible to describe with human words. Does this mean Curtis once was a Hound of Tindalos?
Well he left the building through the window and RETURNED to it so it could be the case in a meta sort of sense. Could also be a metaphor about how in trying to prepare his Children for the return of these monsters, he BECAME a monster himself, which means that the version of himself we see at the end represents some sort of self-reflection. He's looking into the mirror.
And the awesome montage quote of 'Take a good look around you, what do you see? Those who don't know the truth.' Totally want to use that line at some point in a story.
I was pleasantly surprised when I realized this wasn't written by Alan Resnick or O'Brien, meaning the entire Wham City crew is this damn good. Though that camerawork in the last episode was definitely similar to that of a certain tutorial loving young boy.
Great video as always, here's a couple of thoughts: -The water may be because a) water is fairly related to cleanliness, so it's not a big stretch to assume that water is a fairly good hound repellent, and b) water doesn't have any inherent "edges", it is always fluid and so it is the antithesis of Tindalos-esque geometry. -It's kinda interesting that Reece, the child who hesitates to cover his eyes by the end is the very same one who earlier prophecies future events, maybe indicating that he isn't as blind as the other followers. -When Curtis has the children recite that mantra in Cleanliness II, they mention that "the innocent and the prepared will remain", if you think about it, Fanny is extremely willing to follow Curtis and I suppose you could say that Wesley is pretty "innocent", perhaps that explains why Curtis considers them to be his best followers?
ive noticed that in a lot of your videos, you've been expressing insecurities about being seen as someone that forces others to think you're always right/your theories are the absolute truth/etc, and it makes me worried because you've never come across that way to me! are people getting on your case about this? i sure hope not, i think that your ideas are brilliant and super valuable and i'm glad you share them.
OMG ok so I met all of them when they came to Houston and it was phenomenal. But they played the first episode of this series and I got to ask Robby Rackleff why they chose the word bonegrenade and he said there was actually a take they didn't use where he explains that the bonegrenades are used "against breached doorways" so they're like a first response weapon and I thought that was so cool. I am so glad I was able to talk to them about their work and I wouldn't have had the understanding if not for your videos so thank you.
Deer Dossun Sounds like a portable version of a binding circle an occultist would use or a scroll a Daoist Preist would use to bind the undead. If the things actually work, they'd be useful against a Hound of Tindalos. If they work.
@@mysticthemanakete y'all have better overall sketch groups, but the strangest always come from America since we have so many people attempting to become entertainers.
"things you know, things you don't know, things you don't know you know, things that you don't know that you thought you knew, and things you know you thought." you know those things
just noticed that Westley's "contraband" was actually just put beside him after the transition. why would the children get rid of something that is curtis approved
Dogs! A bit of a half thought on the bones and on the last statement of them being too big for chicken bones. ^^; They are about the size of some dog bones and it would make an interesting tie into the whole Hounds of Tindalos thing, Actual hound bones.
worth mentioning for the Lovecraft angle of this in case I missed hearing it in the video: When Curtis is mad at them for being unclean there's a reference in that verse he makes them recite about "shaggoths" which is a direct reference to a monster in Lovecraftian lore that existed far before man and makes you insane to even think of its existence. Food for thought
Something I noticed in the series that NM didn't mention. In episode 5 about 2-3 minutes in Curtis mentions "the yellow one" normally this could mean anything, but since we are already in the realm of Lovecraft and friends this is most likely a reference to Hastur, or THE KING IN YELLOW as he is often known. Hastur was a dark unspeakable figure, who, in his first appearance before Lovecraft adopted him was a shepard. In other words, this christ figure literally references a false shepard. Also, Nyarlathotep is a well known shapeshifter and trickster in the mythos so that's an easy in universe explanation for the ending doppelganger.
+Jarred Korecky Wow. You predicted the video he made where he face-swapped himself with Shia LeBeouf loool (it's on Instagram, Disney took down the UA-cam one)
I wonder if any of the children (in the universe where this series takes place) has died from overdosing on water in the past. Apparently, if you drink too much water all at once your body won't know what to do with it and your body might shut down. This is why the children in the series and Curtis are so sweaty; they're very close to an overdose.
Jay Bird you'd have to drink about 8 litters in a 30 minute span for it to actually start to threaten your life, And you'd most likely puke it up before that.
Correction NM! Westley didn't get his thingy stolen from him, just knocked out of his hand. It's sitting on his left afterwards. You also never explained anything about "X day" on her calendar.
If it was Fanny, this would probably due to her territorial need to keep her position as the head follower. If Westley was showing off something that Curtis had given to Westley directly and not through her. We see that she says it's as good to have your shoes put on by her as it is by Curtis. She doesn't want to lose her rank.
I don't think someone knocked it out of his hand, i think he placed it down when he lost his train of thought. Not sure exactly why though unless it suddenly shocked him that someone would just interrupt like that.
I also found it extremely interesting how the color blue (that sort of baby boy blue we've seen in Alantutorial) has made its way back into WhamCity once again. It seems like it's a sort of protective or 'clean' color for the Children of the Mirror. Also interesting, how we see Wesley in the more white coverall tunic with the yellow/gold rope tied around his waist at first in the beginning (i think the second episode?) as they go through the woods. And then Curtis is examining him with a light in the way a policeman might give a suspect a pat-down. Later, during the Water Lesson, we see Fanny wearing it. In the intro, Curtis appears to be tying the golden rope around her. She loses it again when they're on the soccer field doing their formations when 'Glen' runs away. Maybe Wesley was once the favored disciple, but then when Fanny arrived, he fell out of favor? Could it be because she's a woman and steadfast in her loyalty, which in cults tends to earn favor from Leaders who want to groom females into being completely subservient to them? It seems to promise something fairly dark in the relationship of disciple and leader between Curtis and Wesley in the past, since I'm pretty certain that was him in the wall space for the intro. How he does one little thing not to the standards of Curtis (whatever that is), and he's cut down with emotional and verbal abuse, remaining quiet and sad throughout the rest of the series.
I really love the creative writing, metaphors and just overall interesting ideas that Wham City and Allen Resnick has in all of their work. It's incredibly inspiring to see their stuff and really makes me want to one day achieve to make some creative thought provoking things like them. And honestly, since I've been watching your videos Nick. I'm really happy to have been introduced to such creative works and learning a lot from your explanations about them! All of the things you've talked about and shown to us have really been opening my night mind :D
Well it's mostly not that hard to do. The majority of the stuff is just random weird shit that gets grittier/darker as time progresses until the shock value starts to blossom. So.... you can do this with just about anything you want. Take a random place like lets say the mall. Have you recording you walking around a regular mall doing mundane things and then after a few minutes have something weird happen like you see a spot of blood on the floor or w/e. Don't react much at all just keep walking as will everyone else. Then just increase the random weird shit to the point the camera starts to get all shaky and wonky and bam you've got yourself a generic weird horror short. Don't forget the weird/awkward but mostly normal voice which gets weirder as time goes on of course.
Sam's luvin if you genuinely think their work is just "random weird shit" and "generic weird horror", which couldn't be more inaccurate, at least you're in the right place -- night mind's videos on their projects provide some well thought out insight into the layers of rich metafictional subtext in each one. alantutorial in particular is stunningly crafted. i can't imagine watching and examining their work and thinking they just threw whatever was "weird" in front of a camera.

8:16 I swear, that made me laugh. Just how staring dead on, blank faced at the camera, just chugging water in complete silence. It’s genuine comedic gold.
*TO THOSE WHO ARE REGION BLOCKED AND WANT TO WATCH THE SERIES* I have uploaded all 6 episodes to my vidme account. You can go watch them there. vid.me/KillMeKillMe
Fun fact: The actress that plays Fanny, Cricket Arrison, also played the Pink Thing in THHPII. (Sure, Robby Ratcliff plays Tom, too, but he's more obvious)
These guys are such geniuses. Their acting, the surreal writing and dialogue, the camerawork, fucking *everything* is done so well. I hope they keep making stuff for decades!
As always, you've done a very good job presenting your interpretation, Mr. Nocturne. You focused a little more on the mythological components of the cult than I did in my analysis, and that definitely sheds light on a few things. Great job. Keep doing what you do.
I wouldn't be surprised if there is 5 more hidden videos we don't know about yet. Reece said it was a 12 part show and with back around we have 7 of the 12.
Another piece of info that I think you might have forgotten is that Reece mentions doing a show in the dark and in the last episode where Curtis runs into himself outside, it is the only scene that is outside that is in the dark I think. Just a little something. Great video as always.
Dude, no need to walk yourself backwards. We know it's your own investigations and not gospel truth. We also know that you're far better than most at it, that's why we love the videos. :)
I like the obscure Cthulu Mythos (technically) reference; especially as a meta-reference, where it doesn't *have to mean* that in the narrative, the Hounds of Tindalos are real, it's a very good use of established literature without seeming lazy (as many would by just referencing the "default cosmic horror setting")
When I first watched the video where he flips out about cleanliness, the thought of some kind of rash never actually crossed my mind. To me it looked like what continuous intense scrubbing/washing does do your skin, like what Curtis was doing to his gloves but on your skin. Plays a bit into the water theme, but the sick looks makes total sense when pointed out!
Another excellent analysis, Nick. I'm glad to finally be a monetary supporter; I've been watching your videos for almost a year now, and I've never been let down by one. One thing I'm curious about, however, is the section at 29:00. We see that Fanny isn't wearing the regulation uniform that everyone else is--she doesn't have the Children of the Mirror symbol on her clothing. Then they cut away to a new shot, and she IS in the regulation uniform. Fun Easter egg, or weird hint of something deeper?
Matt Cummins I think it looks like some sort of ceremonial robes because you can still see the collar of the normal uniform. (Haven't seen the original videos yet so I'm only guessing rn) maybe it is because she was chosen for whatever she's doing in the video?
She actually is wearing the same uniform, she just has some type of covering over it. If you pause around 29:18 you can faintly see the symbol underneath. This begs the question as to why she is wearing something over her clothes while the others aren't.
While at first it may not seem like it, the channel Silvagunner has an interesting lore and some creepy episodes that need explaining, and I can't think of anyone better than you.
Another wonderful video and interpretation! Also introduced me to The Mirror, which I had not heard of until this video. I devoured the series right away, and like everything else by Wham City, it's amazing and I was left with wanting more - in a good way. Thanks for making me aware to this project, and as always, thanks for your interpretations which are always thought provoking and insightful!
Coming back to this it’s crazy I’ve been watching you for so long, when this came out I was already 2 years out of highschool still trying to figure myself out in an insane world. So much has changed since then I’m no where the same person 6 years ago but my love of the weird and strange has never changed. We don’t have the same skin we did when we were younger but our bones are always the same
I just wanna say, your videos are incredible. I can see the work, thought and time poured into them, and they’ve done nothing but bring me joy. ... Well, besides scaring the living shit out of me.
I was thinking of Parallel Universes when you pointed out the final shot. The Liemons, while being the clever metaphor you pointed out, could just be one slight difference from that universe, along with the strange movements of the water. That set could be from an alternate universe, and the Curtis from that universe may have somehow left his universe, thus the empty set, and entered our universe, climbing out of the same window that our Curtis lept from. The reasons behind this sudden Universe migration are unknown, this may not actually be what happened, but it was just a fun though I had when you mentioned the final shot. But it really doesn't tie in with the rest of the series that much, only those final moments.
The point you make around 6:57 is something I will, for the first time ever, have to disagree with you on, Mr. Nocturne. When Wesley suddenly is suddenly broken from his train of thought, I do not believe it is because his item has been taken away. If you look closely after the sudden transition, the bag with (presumably a Yo-Yo) that he used to demonstrate his technique with, is still next to him on the bed. That is really my only point of disagreement with you. The bag is next to him, which makes the sudden shift even odder. Perhaps it could be that they are making him bring up the photo frame with the other three members, as opposed to talking about his own item. Though the point of contraband items being taken away is a definitely prevalent, the instance you used with his Yo-Yo being taken away by the passing Child of the Mirror isn't a good example due to the item being right next to Wesley in the next shot. I'm sorry if that seemed a bit scatter-brained to write, I'm a bit out of it today but I did want to highlight the very small error when you talked about the contraband items and such. Other than that, great content as usual ^-^. I hope you have a good night Night Mind!
I was thinking the same thing about Wesley's bag. I thought they took it away at first, as well, then I saw it on the bed. A rare (first?) misstep from our favorite demon-kitty.
Also if you look on Wesley's shelf where the picture frame is, you can see he has a glass of water in a plastic bag. That is a whole new level of neat-freak.
I got the Lovecraft reference without having read The Hounds of Tindalos. There is a short story called Spherical Trigonometry by Ken Asamatsu where the Old Ones have nearly destroyed humanity, but the last three humans on earth live in a capsule shaped bunker that keeps them safe because C'thulu cannot enter in through the corners of the rooms and eat their souls. He gets in anyway, but telling you how will spoil the ending..
The Hands make me think of that creepy thing in Pan's Labyrinth. To me that's a point in the something larger going on side of this. Thanks for the video Nick! You've made me love horror and that's something I never thought would happen.
This is why I love nightmind. He actually does research on whatever series he's doing a video on (and whatever themes comes up in said series) and presents it to us in a neat video that gives us as viewers a new perspective on the source material, which we can choose to pay attention to or not (*unlikematpatcough*). I've been watching your videos since roughly the start of the channel and they've really opened my eyes to certain things in each series that you've covered that made me go "I've never thought of it that way" and I'm glad there's someone like you on here. Keep up the great work!
After watching it I too got the feeling it was related to cosmic horrors. He even hints his old old self was a form incomprehensible to humanity. The old ones use other life forms as vessels for their consciousness to survive past a calamity in a few stories. While the ancient ones also use vessels to affect this dimension. The fear of corners, seems to point to the many angled ones. Though wasn't aware of the contemporary of Lovecraft that wrote a story about angles being doorways. Not sure water was the best choice since it conducts but he may have not taken that into account. And instead thought it would fill up the vessel so nothing could enter. His mistake may have very well caused him and his groups undoing.
Nick, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for this channel and the videos you make. I've been introduced to a whole world of art that I'd completely overlooked before. You explain things thoroughly and concisely with a reverence for the content and creators that enlightens and inspires me. I also want to send thanks to all of your supporters who are able to support you especially financially. I am unable at this time, and recognize that through others generosity we can all benefit. Thank you everyone. Keep doing what you're doing.
I think it's interesting that Wesley's redness appears under his eyes. Much like how the Sculptors eyes were red underneath. I'm sure it's either just a coincidence or, at most, an easter egg. I just noticed it and thought it was worth bringing up.
I can't investigate right now, but it catches my attention that reece says his performance is in twelve parts and there are six episodes in a series about mirrors. I bet there's six more episodes, but where are they?
Reece's funny annecdote is interesting as well if we're thinking about people having doubles/reflections: "I was in this band, uh, for a little while and it was just me in the band. After the band broke up we were like, 'Oh, let's do a… we should do, like, a… performance'. Anyway, that kind of evolved into this twelve volume script, so then I decided to make it… decided to make like, um, just a one-man play." He was in a band where it was "just me" in the band, yet they still managed to break up. He then uses the pronoun "we" to talk about coming up with the performance, later switching to "I" when talking about the one-man play. Does this mean Reece was in a band made of multiple copies of himself?
"How'd you get harassed?" Indeed. That word has these days become so overused. Were you *actually* harassed, or did someone say mean words to you over the Internet?
Alan Resnick and Lovecraftian cosmic horror all in one! This is my favorite episode yet! It is possible that Curtis is just a lovecraftian character. Perhaps he took that mysterious drug and saw time from the fifth dimension, just like in the story. With the forbidden knowledge he went mad and started a cult. It all adds up.
I think there's something else that, while kinda small, adds more to your explanation regarding the stage: When looking at the sketch, it looks very similar to a design for a specific type of theatre, known as "theatre *in the round*". This is a style where the audience surrounds the actors, and in order to make an entrance or an exit, they have to go through the audience. Effectively, the actors are trapped onstage. So, not only do we have a connection to the round theme, but there's also the idea of being trapped, which Curtis is doing to the other cult members. We can tell not only because it's a cult and that's typical cult behavior, but in the series itself when Glen tries to run away and gets chased by everyone else (there's your explanation for who that missing friendship bracelet belonged to). This may be drawing a lot from a little, but considering one of the members of Wham City is Cricket Arrison, who is an active playwright and involved in the theatre space, I doubt that this was something they hadn't heard or thought of in some form. And it gives the series an even more solid meaning, which is always nice, isn't it?
I know, I wish I could meet the guy. I mean, I appreciate his work a lot, especially how he represented the character of Alantutorial in that series. I'm actually autistic myself, and while my case isn't as severe as Alantutorial's, it still feels debilitating and scary to look at the outside world and all this stuff that I thought I'd be ready for by now but I'm just... really not. I can't imagine what an autistic person losing their mother at such a young (mental or literal) age must have been like, considering how close I am to mine and how supportive we are of each other.
Alright you sold me. I'm going to watch the playlist first then get back to you. I know if you're covering it, i'm probably in for something good. I love the time and research you put into everything. Thank you so much! :3
I love how every time I find and watch a wham city comedy video; I walk away both entertained, and I have multiple headaches from how many questions I'm asking after viewing. Please, Wham City, don't change your style, it's perfect.
19:01 My educated guess is that this is a variant of a talisman in the follow-up to Long's original story, "The Hound" by Lovecraft. In that story, a cursed amulet of Jade in the form of one of the Hounds was stolen from the grave of a ancient sorcerer. This in turn led to a hound killing both grave robbers. My personal guess is that the bone statues are designed to do the opposite of said amulet and serve as a means of protection instead of a curse. Indeed, the original Jade amulet may have possibly served as a talisman which the sorcerer used to protect himself from and/or to control the hounds. However, it had the opposite effect on grave robbers that knew not how to properly handle or use the device.
something that stood out for me that you never mentioned (either because you didn't notice or didn't find it relevant) was that every episode had a new fourth child that was never seen again in the next episode, and they were always the least enthusiastic about the activities. this stands out the most in the water episode, with the fourth guy not being able to keep up with the physical activities and seems to be downright spooked by it as he starts backing off, only to have the rest of them start yelling at him and then chase him.
Just came back to this video, and just realized the tie back to Reece, and the first video, he specifically says he was the only person in his band, but uses 'we' to describe the band. Makes me wonder if he was being literal. That there were multiple Reeces in that band...
Night Mind, Wham City Comedy, and IFC? Wow this is amazing! Your insight was detailed and great as always, but one of my greater concerns was with the fourth Child- always changing and never as devoted. Also, I think the name Children of the Mirror has a double meaning: the first being what you offered, that followers become mirrors of a narcissistic cult leader, and also that the followers ARE the children. He is the mirror, reflecting this 'truth' of the cosmos. Great video :)
Fun fact! Just found out that Cricket Arrison, the woman playing Fanny in this was also the pink bedsheets creature in this house has people in it.
i was wondering where she was!

Great video as always, here's a couple of thoughts:
-The water may be because a) water is fairly related to cleanliness, so it's not a big stretch to assume that water is a fairly good hound repellent, and b) water doesn't have any inherent "edges", it is always fluid and so it is the antithesis of Tindalos-esque geometry.

If they work.

just noticed that Westley's "contraband" was actually just put beside him after the transition. why would the children get rid of something that is curtis approved
Thanks, just had to search through the comments to make sure I wasn't the only one who caught that.
Dogs! A bit of a half thought on the bones and on the last statement of them being too big for chicken bones. ^^; They are about the size of some dog bones and it would make an interesting tie into the whole Hounds of Tindalos thing, Actual hound bones.
surprised he didn't mention the ever changing fourth child of the mirror
I think its just supposed to show that the cult is bigger than just the main three
worth mentioning for the Lovecraft angle of this in case I missed hearing it in the video: When Curtis is mad at them for being unclean there's a reference in that verse he makes them recite about "shaggoths" which is a direct reference to a monster in Lovecraftian lore that existed far before man and makes you insane to even think of its existence. Food for thought
honestly nick could read me a very graphic description of roadkill and i’d be in a state of absolute bliss. his voice is just soothing

I wonder if any of the children (in the universe where this series takes place) has died from overdosing on water in the past. Apparently, if you drink too much water all at once your body won't know what to do with it and your body might shut down. This is why the children in the series and Curtis are so sweaty; they're very close to an overdose.

@@firebomb5510 Bad day?
Correction NM! Westley didn't get his thingy stolen from him, just knocked out of his hand. It's sitting on his left afterwards. You also never explained anything about "X day" on her calendar.
I think fanny knocked it out of his hand
If it was Fanny, this would probably due to her territorial need to keep her position as the head follower. If Westley was showing off something that Curtis had given to Westley directly and not through her.
We see that she says it's as good to have your shoes put on by her as it is by Curtis. She doesn't want to lose her rank.
+Dee Cipher it's _almost_ as good to have Fanny put on your shoes (I've been re-watching WCC a lot lately heh)
Thanks for the correction! I would say instead of a full 'step' away from Curtis. I would say she's a half step. So, she's only slightly below him.
That's what it's all about, Nintala. Thank you!
Sam's luvin good thing wham city/resnick's work is absolutely nothing like that.
You misspelled completely somehow
Sam's luvin if you genuinely think their work is just "random weird shit" and "generic weird horror", which couldn't be more inaccurate, at least you're in the right place -- night mind's videos on their projects provide some well thought out insight into the layers of rich metafictional subtext in each one. alantutorial in particular is stunningly crafted. i can't imagine watching and examining their work and thinking they just threw whatever was "weird" in front of a camera.

As always, you've done a very good job presenting your interpretation, Mr. Nocturne. You focused a little more on the mythological components of the cult than I did in my analysis, and that definitely sheds light on a few things. Great job. Keep doing what you do.

Such a wonderfully creepy series!

This comes out a day after Poppy announces "I'M NOT IN A CULT'. Hmmmm....
She *is* the cult.
Amelia Bee coincidence?! I think not!!
"Damn, I'm so glad to be in Poppy!"
I noticed that too.
Also if you look on Wesley's shelf where the picture frame is, you can see he has a glass of water in a plastic bag.
That is a whole new level of neat-freak.
Pheonyx Jay Sure, taking things from others is a show of power, and can be done as a means to quarantine contamination

Thanks for the video Nick! You've made me love horror and that's something I never thought would happen.
What it sorta reminds me of is 'two by two, hands of blue'.
Thanks Nick! The husband and I can't wait to leave the office - we always look forward to gathering around the tv when a Night Mind video is uploaded.

Reece's funny annecdote is interesting as well if we're thinking about people having doubles/reflections:
"I was in this band, uh, for a little while and it was just me in the band. After the band broke up we were like, 'Oh, let's do a… we should do, like, a… performance'. Anyway, that kind of evolved into this twelve volume script, so then I decided to make it… decided to make like, um, just a one-man play."
He was in a band where it was "just me" in the band, yet they still managed to break up. He then uses the pronoun "we" to talk about coming up with the performance, later switching to "I" when talking about the one-man play. Does this mean Reece was in a band made of multiple copies of himself?

Alan Resnick and Lovecraftian cosmic horror all in one! This is my favorite episode yet!
It is possible that Curtis is just a lovecraftian character. Perhaps he took that mysterious drug and saw time from the fifth dimension, just like in the story. With the forbidden knowledge he went mad and started a cult. It all adds up.

Am I the only one who keeps making a mental connections to Alan Tutorial with the performance by Alan and the constant blue???
I think there's something else that, while kinda small, adds more to your explanation regarding the stage:
When looking at the sketch, it looks very similar to a design for a specific type of theatre, known as "theatre *in the round*".
Allen looks like such a sweet man.

I honestly don't pay attention to what you say but your voice is something else 10/10
