This is random recommended to me and I've never watched that anime, but I share the same thought like he does. A World where every individual is equal to each other exists in a ideal World. In our Minds. The real Reality, where you live in, is a ignorant and cruel world. But we humans learned to deal with that. Not even learned, but since the beginning of mandkind it does work in that way.
Problem comes when an incompetent person is on top of the hierarchy and there's no way to change that. The wrong solution is to completely break any form of hierarchy cause you still end up creating a new hierarchy anyways which isn't based on competence
We all might have different starting points because of things like money or social standing, but the reality is.. in America, there is nothing stopping you from succeeding but your own self doubt.
there can't be "equality". just take that each one is different in learning speed, thought processes, live in different regions. equality is rather say as being "same".
He never defines what equal means, which lets us interpretate equality in our own persepctives. I dont really know what is he thinking, but there's a big difference in what we want for the world, and how the world actually is, and in my eyes equality doesn't exist at all, people try to sooth it with love and compassion but "karma" doesn't favor the hardest workers and loveliest, people that know how to play the game of life get that "success"... Anyway, what do you do after you win? You keep looking for new battles? After a while don' t you lose interest in winning? I guess life gets boring, but connecting to people makes it richer
He had me up until said "we live in a meritocracy". Nahhhh not really kid, but that's a very real high school perspective of reality I shared that ideal as well in my teen year that if you work hard you get further in life but that isn't usually the case. The original FMA series had an excellent counter thesis to this very subject when Ed was debating Dante on "Equivalent exchange". That idea truly is a concept to comfort the oppressed and make children do their studies, "people work because they believe it will pay, but equal effort does not always mean equal gain".
You might be misinterpreting what he means by a "meritocracy" and potentially undermined his words due to this and his age. Merit equates to worthiness, particularly the kind deserving attention. Merit is given to the recognized, those who are known to be excellent in some fashion. I believe you're taking his quote to mean that he is saying," all hard work will be rewarded," but having watched the series in its entirety, I can say knowing his beliefs, that is not his belief. This is how I interpreted his words, within the context of the anime and his characterization: human beings are not equal, despite what society might tell you. Although we might start out equal, the actions we take throughout life will inevitably alter our worth in society. Those with the most achievements, those with the most ability, and those who give the most effort will have the power, regardless of character. (the classroom elites). Many might deny it but we live in a meritocracy. This is a cold, logical statement. Far from any well-meant age-old phrase. This isn't only about how hard you work. But the results that come from it. If that fails to sway you, then it would be prudent to understand he is talking about his world, not necessarily ours, a world where academic achievement can directly lead to economic wealth and political power for the most genius of students. (although, that isn't too far-fetched for ours isn't it). Which is the very picture of a meritocracy. Meritocracy: "Meritocracy is a political system in which economic goods and/or political power are vested in individual people on the basis of talent, effort, and achievement, rather than wealth or social class. Advancement in such a system is based on performance, as measured through examination or demonstrated achievement."
Never in a million years will lives be equal. Only in a ideas can lives be equal. Also the question “are all lives equal?” is a very vague and open ended question. Equal in what exactly?

I don't think you guys get the fact the world meritocracy means judging based of skill or abilities now talking about how long or how hard you work for something, its talking about the skills you have. we do live in a meritocracy= where our government judges you based on the abilities you possess.
But this world isn't really a meritocracy, I don't even know the correct world for it. Sometimes you can work all your life and gain nothing and then there's some who do nothing and get everything.
meritocracy means being judged by your abilities not talking about how hard you work or time spent for something. we do live in a meritocracy where we our judged by our skills and abilities.
"Heaven does not create one person above or below another." But the quote doesn't end there. It actually says we're equal at birth, but then gaps appear. That the differences are the result of one's academic efforts, or lack thereof.
