@runtothemovies Hey ladies. Awesome reaction as usual! This was one of the movies that inspired me to join the US Marines! That and a lot of mornings of GI Joe b4 school! Gotta love the Arnold lines.... So cheesy but so iconic! Upgrade and Man From Uncle I think you guys would love! Keep up the great reactions and love! ❤🤍💙💛
My boys are 17 and 18 but I have done my best to educate them about pop culture that predates them, music, TV and films and if nothing else, I have instilled in them an interest to seek out media of interest to them on their own.
I've always loved it how Commando is both a good action film on it's own, and a good "affectionate parody" of the 80s actions genre. Kinda what My Name is Nobody did for spaghetti westerns.
The fact that Abby didn’t recognize Arnold Schwarzenegger made me feel so sad for her and love her even more at the same time. Commando epitomizes so much of what made action movies in the 80s so f’n awesome. This film knows exactly what it is and runs with it. Commando started out as a screenplay written by Joseph Loeb III. He’s actually one of the most prolific comic book writers of all-time who wrote stories for Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Captain America, Daredevil, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer to name a few. This explains why Commando has a lot of over-the-top superhero elements embodied by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who by this point had become an action movie super star thanks to his roles in Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator. To answer Abby’s questions, Arnold Schwarzenegger did have a stunt double, especially for the scenes when Matrix swings across the mall like Tarzan, and when he gets hit by Sully car. When Matrix is dangling Sully over the cliff, you can just barely see the safety wire attached to his leg holding him up. The director, Mark L. Lester, originally wanted Arnold to dangle David Patrick Kelly (Sully) without any technical support. Even though he was incredibly strong, Arnold thought the idea was crazy and refused to do that. Vernon Wells is the Australian actor who played Bennett. Unfortunately he wasn’t as big of a star compared to Schwarzenegger. Before Commando, Wells was best remembered for his role as Wez in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981). Yes, Matrix ripped out the seat in Cindy’s car so that he would have room to hide his massive frame while still keeping an eye on where Sully was going. No, the warehouse at 30:01 is owned by President Arius (Dan Hedaya) to supply weapons for his army. Remember, Arius is the Latin American dictator who explains a the beginning that Matrix was responsible for overthrowing him from power. Now he intends on launching a coup to retake power using those weapons to arm his loyalists and mercenaries. I’m sending all the love in the world for you ladies! As for other great 80s action films, I would definitely recommend the Running Man, Conan, Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Road House, Red Dawn, Big Trouble in Little China, Batman, the Goonies, Willow, Legend, and the original trilogies for Mad Max, Rambo, and Indiana Jones. 🫶🏻
@@brianjones7907 Thank you, those are great films. I didn’t mention Predator because I know they’ve seen it already, but I realized that Abby hasn’t seen Escape from New York. In fact, if she hasn’t seen it, Abby should definitely watch Robocop as well!
Abby definitely needs A SPECIAL SET OF SKILLS if she didn't even know Arnie or what he looked like before this. She needs an action movie marathon. 1 week, 16 hours a day. 😂
This was filmed during the time when Arnold and Sly Stallone were always trying to one-up each other in their films. Commando came out the same year as Rambo (First Blood 2). If you had a kill count of 50 the other would make a movie with a kill count of 55, same for explosions and flexing shots. It was a great time to be watching over-the-top action films.
Just FYI, this movie came out months later in the same year as Rambo: First Blood Part II. I read the ending of this movie was rewritten last minute to try to outdo what Stallone did near the end of Ramdo, once the director (I think it was the director) watched the movie, Rambo, in theaters. When Chris Hemsworth talked about his recent action movie, Extraction 2 (both Extraction movies are top-tier action definitely very-well worth seeing), he said the director referenced a lot of Schwarzenegger films. Hemsworth said he told the director, "We gotta do the Arnold Commando shot!".
Fun Fact: Arnold's daughter will eventually grow up to become Phoebe on Charmed. And appear in a rather provocative move called "Embrace of the Vampire" and in a show from 1995 called The Outer Limits: Season 1 Episode 16; AND also in the movie "Poison Ivy 2: Lily."
Bennett, the psycho with the mustache, was in the Road Warrior, where he was a psycho with a Mohawk And I really enjoy when you guys laugh at the crazy carnage scenes, it's the whole point with these over-the-top action movies
"Escape From New York" starring Kurt Russell would be a good action movie for Abby, and I think Toy would enjoy it without having to look away very much.
A years before "Commando" came out, I was at a really cool surplus store in Portland, and a kid about 13 or 14 years old asked the owner where the secret room where he kept all the guns was. I guess that was popular urban myth.
"good for arnold still being alive" LOL WE LOVE YOU ABBYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY Special Set of Skills has been called!!!!!!!! Find someone who looks into your eyes the way Toy looks into Arnold's at 6:28 and never let them go. 😍
David Patrick Kelly (Sully) had a wire tied to his ankle when Arnold held him upside down, you can actually see the wire. 48:00 he screamed like a banshee 😂😂
The familiar Abby squeak at 43:29 !! 😀 I was supposed to comment on something else as well, but I'm old. Hopefully someone else had the same idea as me and has already written it. 😀 Thanks for uploading! Greetings from Sweden
Now I remember!!! I laughed at how Abbys worst nightmare was to be in a portapotty with a bear outside trying to push it over! But then I thought about it.... What would one really rather do, lie around in other peoples poo, or just give up and have the bear nibble your guts out? It's a tough one!
The estate used for the final act is the Harold Lloyd Greenacres estate, which silent film star Harold Lloyd built in the 1920s and lived in until his death in 1971.
5:58 Hey, Toy and Abby, the actress who played Arnold's daughter in this movie, is Alyssa Milano When they were on break from filming this movie, Arnold was pretty protective of her and he would actually help Alyssa with her homework while onset
In the 1970's there was a sitcom called "The Odd Couple". One character made a joke about classical music composers. As he was leaving his joke went, "As a famous composer once said, I'll be Bach!"
Another reactor decided to rationalize Matrix's incredible strength by making it her head canon that Matrix had been part of an experimental program by the Army to recreate Captain America's super soldier serum. I liked that idea.
You two are fantastic 😂 Great reaction. Arnie was THE MAN in the 80s. You have so many great "classics" to look forward 😂 Can't wait to see your reactions.😃
Abby should watch "Lethal Weapon" starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Solid mix of action, humor, drama, and character development. ditto for "Die Hard" starring Bruce Willis.
Excellent suggestions. We're planning on having Abby watch Due Hard. We already have two reactions to it for Christmas in July, with Hannah, and then Tori and Toy.
@@RuntotheMovies Yayyy! Sine you're doing Christmas in July, consider "Violent Night" starring David Harbour and John Leguizamo. The film makers said they wanted to do satirical Christmas movie that people who actually like Christmas would enjoy, so it's violent and funny yet genuinely heartwarming. Also, I think it was the "Toy level of bad stuff happening" in that the brutality and grossness are just enough for her to enjoy without stressing her out.
Ok, first of all, it's kinda sweet that Abby was new to action films. I have no gauge for how that is because my sister had my brother's and I watching action and horror films long before we should have. I would say a rough definition of the action genre is a film where the meat and potatoes of it are heavily action packed with loads of stunts or explosions. Lol
The little girl is Alyssa Milano who would go on to be a pretty big deal in more than a few television series in the 90s. She has talked about how nice Arnold was when they were filming this, having a real fatherly vibe with her - he even helped her with her math homework at one point.
The porta potty with a bear scenario cracked me up hard. As I was laughing I wondered why suitcase guy chose to involve himself in the mall ruckus. He could've calmy walked out of the mall. I've seen this maybe a hundred times, who knows. I think it's the purest action movie.
The guy who played the role of Sully...i remembered him most when I was a kid in another film enitled, Dreamscape. He co-stars in this sci-fi fantasy with Dennis Quaid. David Patrick Kelly knows how to play the role of a sleazy bad guy. But he's probably best known for his brief taunting scene in The Warriors.
“I’ll be back” was originally from the terminator. When he’s at the police station. It was a funny moment from the cyborg when it wasn’t supposed to be funny, so I can only assume that’s why it became famous.
The 1980's were also the time of the first 3 Rambo films. ("First Blood" was the first Rambo film from 1982). Very similar battle violence. But the battle scenes in Commando keep reminding me of Charlie Sheen's comedy film spoof of "Rambo II" called, "Hot Shots Part Deux" (1993). I think he was also spoofing Commando as well. All the films are worth checking out. Movies back then rocked! Never a dull moment.
@@RuntotheMovies Try Arnold's another movies .. like ( The running man ) ( last action hero ) ( Twins ) ( Junior ) ( Eraser ) Please put them on your list.
A special set of skills most definitely! The 80's were the best, except for the cold war and shoulder pads but everything else was great! Another top reaction, thanks.
Abby & Toy Man, who plays Bennett is Vernon Wells from Australia. Vernon often plays bad guys such as Wez in Mad Max 2: Road Warrior with Mel Gibson and of course as Bennett with Arnold in Commando. His Wez' character is a homicidal biker giving Mel's Max hell in the wasteland of Australia.
Toy & Abby Woman, flight attendant, who helps Arnold's Matrix is Rae Dawn Chong. Rae is the eldest daughter of legendary stoner/comedian, Tommy Chong. Backstory of her involvement of Commando is that her father and his comic partner, Cheech met Arnold when he came to California from Austria for bodybuilding. Arnold became good friends with Cheech and Chong.
From what i have read, a sequel was written but Arnold didn't want to do it so the changed the lead actor and a few details and the end result was Bruce Willis in die hard. Win win for movie fan's
That big black guy that did all the killing in the opening scenes of the movie is Mac from Arnold Schwarzenegger's Predator movie. Played by Bill Duke. -OG
A pure, hardcore action extravaganza. From Joel Silver, producer of legendary franchises, Lethal Weapon and The Matrix. Arnold's next iconic role after The Terminator and 1 of 2 films he did in 1985. Alyssa Milano's (Jenny) made this movie while on the sitcom, 'Who's The Boss". The beginning of Arnold in quinessential action mode and defining his legacy for the genre. Plenty of shoot outs without reloading, outlandish explosions, unbelievable kills and one liners galore. Arnold was friends and rivals with fellow icon Sly Stallone. They always tried to outdo each other. Same year, Sly was in Rambo:First Blood part II and Arnold was in Commando. The CONTRA video game series by Konami was influenced by both with the characters resembling John Matrix & John Rambo. RIP to Bill Paxton (Intercept Officer) and composer James Horner. 2 other good films from director Mark Lester is Stephen King's Firestarter (1984) with Drew Barrymore and Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991) with Dolph Lundgren & Brandon Lee.
Many dont know this but there is an Bollywood COMMANDO version that has a sequel to it, the action is very cool even though they speak Hindi in the movies and Hindi actor very fit and does much of his own stunts as well. Last time I heard his a defense instructor.
@25:36 - Alas, what you have yet to realize is that there are SEVERAL editing mistakes in "Commando". One of them being the wire that you can see attached to Sully's leg as Matrix holds him and then there's the miraculous body work repair of the driver's side of the Porche.
22:52 It does seem like a Tarzan rope swing to do! I recommend watching George of the Jungle if you like stunts like that. The stuntman had to rope swing off the Bay Bridge.
IIRC the gun he's using during the estate attack with the ammo belt wrapped around his forearm is usually mounted on helicopters/on a tri-pod....I do know it's not meant to be a handheld weapon.
Ok, you guys have GOT to check out "Tango & Cash". It's the last action movie of the 80's! And it was so over the top, it makes "Commando" look like a boring church sermon.
Here's the bizarre thing about the two leads in this movie. The actress is Rae Dawn Chung. She helped a waiter, an unknown actor (Chris Pratt) get his first acting job. And years later he ended up marrying Arnold Schwarzenegger's Daughter. Believe it, or Not.
In 70s and 80s military surplus stores would buy from military through auctions requiring them to have a contract with DOD. In this manner clandestine operatives or contractors could get whatever supplies were needed then after the mission or operation was over the after-action report would explain what they got and from who, then DOD would reimburse the surplus store for loses with a little extra for hush money. The instructions are attached by a metal wire look for those if new, if refurbished plastic tie strap loop.
Do you know who Alyssa Milano is? That's her playing Arnold Schwarzenegger's young 10 year old daughter. Today she's 51 years old. And yes, Arnold is still very much alive at 76 years old.
Arnold is NOT dangling Sully over the cliff. The director wanted him to do that but Arnold was not comfortable doing that. And when Arnold lifts up the phone booth, he actually could do that a real booth but they built one out of balsa wood for the shot.
Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in this after Red Sonja and before Raw Deal. More movies of his I recommend for Abby include Conan the Barbarian, The Running Man, Red Heat, Twins, Kindergarten Cop, Total Recall, Last Action Hero, True Lies and Eraser. Sylvester Stallone starred in Rambo: First Blood Part 2 and Rocky IV the same year as this

"You don't know about that...." As somebody who remembers pay phones, hell, land-line phones, thanks for the solidarity, lol.
43:23 - The reaction to the sawblade. lmfao!
Robs a weapons store -> Doesnt even get handcuffed by the police...🤣🤣
The 80s.
Yes at this point in his career Arnold did his stunts. He was a six time Mr. Olympia, Mr. Universe etc. obviously as he aged he had stuntmen
Abby & Toy
Man, who plays Bennett is Vernon Wells from Australia. Vernon often plays bad guys such as Wez in Mad Max 2: Road Warrior with Mel Gibson and of course as Bennett with Arnold in Commando. His Wez' character is a homicidal biker giving Mel's Max hell in the wasteland of Australia.
Toy & Abby
Woman, flight attendant, who helps Arnold's Matrix is Rae Dawn Chong. Rae is the eldest daughter of legendary stoner/comedian, Tommy Chong. Backstory of her involvement of Commando is that her father and his comic partner, Cheech met Arnold when he came to California from Austria for bodybuilding. Arnold became good friends with Cheech and Chong.
36:05 This marked the second of three interactions that Bill Paxton had with Arnold Swcharzenegger on film.
From what i have read, a sequel was written but Arnold didn't want to do it so the changed the lead actor and a few details and the end result was Bruce Willis in die hard. Win win for movie fan's
Die Hard 2 , "the one at the airport"
Vernon Welles (the mustachioed villain) was also the bad guy in The Road Warrior.
Run To The Movies Truly Such A Awesome Video Today!!🔥🐐🐐💎
This girl went on to be in Charmed! Yes it is a great house, famous silent comedian Harold Lloyd's estate in Beverly Hills, you see it in many movies.
That big black guy that did all the killing in the opening scenes of the movie is Mac from Arnold Schwarzenegger's Predator movie. Played by Bill Duke. -OG
Decades later, and I still have yet to figure out why Sully screamed out "OOH-LA-LA!!!", as he fell.
😹
A pure, hardcore action extravaganza.
From Joel Silver, producer of legendary franchises, Lethal Weapon and The Matrix.
Arnold's next iconic role after The Terminator and 1 of 2 films he did in 1985.
Alyssa Milano's (Jenny) made this movie while on the sitcom, 'Who's The Boss".
The beginning of Arnold in quinessential action mode and defining
his legacy for the genre.
Plenty of shoot outs without reloading, outlandish explosions,
unbelievable kills and one liners galore.
Arnold was friends and rivals with fellow icon Sly Stallone.
They always tried to outdo each other.
Same year, Sly was in Rambo:First Blood part II and Arnold was in Commando.
The CONTRA video game series by Konami was influenced by both with
the characters resembling John Matrix & John Rambo.
His daughter is Alissa Milano
17:25 he was the head guy with the hat on who cleaned up John Wick's house after John killed all the hitmen.
They used squibs in the 80s, blood packets that explode on queue (animal blood).
IIRC the gun he's using during the estate attack with the ammo belt wrapped around his forearm is usually mounted on helicopters/on a tri-pod....I do know it's not meant to be a handheld weapon.
grew up watching this movies just like waTCHING thereaction. hi abby
Thanks so much for watching with us!
I knew a big guy with a little Austin Healey once, and he really did have to remove the driver's seat and drive from the back seat.
Omg I haven't seen this movie in forever!
Ok, you guys have GOT to check out "Tango & Cash". It's the last action movie of the 80's! And it was so over the top, it makes "Commando" look like a boring church sermon.
Abby and I have reacted to that! 😍😍😍😍 check it out 😊😊❤❤❤ we loved it
Here's the bizarre thing about the two leads in this movie.
Amazing reaction, and of course, "Special Set of Skills" XD
I like that she knows what her mum looked like as a kid but not a clue who arnie was 😂
Do you know who Alyssa Milano is? That's her playing Arnold Schwarzenegger's young 10 year old daughter. Today she's 51 years old. And yes, Arnold is still very much alive at 76 years old.
Great reaction ladies 😊Abby need to see Rambo movie’s
Arnold Schwarzenegger is attached to star in Commando: Retribution, the sequel to 1985's Commando.
Arnold is NOT dangling Sully over the cliff. The director wanted him to do that but Arnold was not comfortable doing that. And when Arnold lifts up the phone booth, he actually could do that a real booth but they built one out of balsa wood for the shot.
Toy, you were being a dirty bird and constantly THIRSTY!! Looking at Arnold like he's a giant pork chop in his speedo. 😆🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you got me! 😁😁😁❤❤❤
Wish I was arnold 😂
Abby is such a sweet summer child of innocence 😅
21:52 That is the most random thing she said. :D
During is earlier body building days ,Arnold serves in the Austrian army.itvwas rumored he drove an army tank into a lake.
Sylvester Stallone starred in Rambo: First Blood Part 2 and Rocky IV the same year as this
37:56
Technically, Abby, the "Boat Plane", as you'd called it, is a seaplane
