ELKIE BROOKS Don't Cry Out Loud

- It is 40 years since this version of the Peter Allen/Carole Bayer Sager classic charted in Britain for the wonderful singer Elkie Brooks. I know I will be derided by the legion of Elkie fans on youtube for saying so but Melissa Manchester's version is the definitive for me; always has been and always will be, but Ms Brooks brings a different energy and tone to the composition. Unbeknownst to me until now, Elkie's version preceded Melissa's by a few weeks and it reached #12 in her homeland; whilst the Melissa Manchester Grammy nominated turn reached #10 in early 1979. I also didn't realise that neither of these great vocal performances were the original of the iconic song. The Moments released it two years earlier; under the title 'We Don't Cry Out Loud' produced by famed singer Sylvia Robinson ('Shame Shame Shame' - Shirley & Company). This R&B version was not a major hit but thanks to the pair of aforementioned vocalists, 'Don't Cry Out Loud' is a 70's classic; giving the ladies success in their homelands. Here, I have re-laid the audio of Elkie to her TV performance of the song. It's spooky, but in a few of the shots she resembles Melissa Manchester.
Makes me laugh how folk these days make such a fuss about the likes of Adele - it’s almost as though no other singers existed before her……..this is superb!
Yes Elke Brooks is amazing but Adele is too
It's not that, it's just that you're older, one day they will be too
@@relaxingwhitenoises757 I think Elkie is fab. I don’t consider myself old at 29.
@@Jake-jr2zh was I talking about you though? Or was I replying to the initial poster? Jeez
The modern artists really can not hold a candle to the oldies, remember todays lot have auto tune and have to strip to get to the top.
For those of us that know and appreciate music from this special era she was an icon unsurpassed
❤❤❤
Definitely, a unique voice
Todays singers need to listen to the greats from the past like this
This kills me every time I hear it. Reminds me of my soul mate who passed unexpectedly. Until we meet again 🙏
So sorry for your loss ❤
Could listen to her songs all day long.
One of the Greatest unique female singers in the business ❤❤❤
I do

@@angelagardner5230STILL IS I saw her in concert in London two weeks ago she was amazing , she blew the roof off.
Makes me tear. And I’m a strong man. Beautiful.
Not only is she tremendously talented, she is also a decent lovely person. Always loved her songs.
Went to see Elkie and her band at Theatre Royal Brighton last night. What a performance. What a voice. She certainly “has it all.”
Yes I heard she was amazing.
I loved this song. Her voice is timeless. Brilliant song 👋👋👋👋
I can't think of a single thing wrong with this song and this performance. Sublime.
Ellie brooks greatest ever song in my opinion and that musical arrangement is just outstanding, it really is
As close to perfection as you’re gonna get!
Saw Elkie Live a couple of years ago, she was amazing. I went with my Daughter, who said it was one of the soundtracks of her childhood. Have always loved Elkie and this song is one of my favourites
So lucky. Would love to see her. She still going?
This song is so true,if only people would listen,I’m in my late 60’s and still keeping it all in ,I want to cry out loud 😢
If you want to cry out loud then you go right ahead , keeping it in does you no good
Absolutely top drawer ! Her voice is like a top end sports car just coasting along, every now and then you get to hear the power and you just know there’s a lot more in there 🙏
Absolutely spot on description ❤
No music from 60’s, 70’s and 80’s has yet surpassed!
It's certainly better than a black bloke shouting baby girl
I love the analogy of life being a circus, relying on some clown who lets you down. Stay strong and don't let them see they've hurt you
Beautiful ❤
Went to see her sunday she is amazing you must go and see still got it at 79
After hearing this, I can't listen to any other version. She has the perfect voice for this song.
I agree noone sings this song like ELKIE.....
I've heard a few versions. Elkie's is the best I've heard so far.
What an amazing voice and what a great performer ! 😃
I was born in 73....I love thinking back to the songs my dad played in the car when we went out Sunday runs, Elkie Brookes was one singer we loved listening too, really takes me back ❤❤❤
A beautiful version of a great Peter Allen song.
I used to quietly weep when I heard this song as a youngster. Nearly 45 years later, its impact is still the same as it was back then. A truly great song sung by the forever wonderful Elkie Brooks.

It's about time she was given a lifetime achievement award by the Brits, but it wont happen as she's not mainstream or 'cool' enough for them to do it
The best version.
Beautiful voice.tops the rest of them.pure class.
Always loved her voice ❤,and still do,Fantastic.
Brilliant song and performance from Elkie. Have been lucky enough to see her live many times. She is like a good wine and improves with age.
Best version!!!

Such emotion in her voice, Elkie is one of the most underrated performers , why are her songs not covered? Cos no one can do them justice I think

Brings back such sweet memories!
Simply the greatest UK female singer ever... and a proper singer too...Just cause you dont sing slushy pop doesnt make you not worthy.
What a voice!
Just love this! Incredible songwriting and performance 😊
Who wrote this song??. Is Elkie Brookes still performing do you know?. Regards.
@@johnrosenbaum8730 apologies as didn’t mean to press the thumbs down icon! It was written by a guy called Peter Allen who wrote for a number of artists but had a career himself in Australia. The lyrics were by Carole Bayer Sager. I saw Ellie perform twice and have to say she was brilliant but doubt if she will ever tour again as she is now 78 years of age.
@@derekbrockguitarist2559 thank you for your reply, didn't realize her age, but she has quite a catalogue of work to listen to, gorgeous voice. ♥️
@@johnrosenbaum8730 she has indeed. I love Lilac Wine, Fool if you think it's over, Sunshine after rain...... All great songs 😊
My favourite version of this song.
Just flawless
Fabulous vocal 😎👍
How come such a beautiful voice and singer has escaped my notice for so long? When I first heard 'Running for the Future', I was sure it was Bonnie Tyler!
Elkie has been in it longer than Bonnie.and IMO a much better singer.
@@Jake-jr2zh Totally Agree she's a league above Bonnie Tyler
🎉 thank you
What a voice loud clear beautiful
Wonderful Voice
That voice , gets the hairs standing on back of my neck .
Mum loved this x I miss her x
She is just so brilliant ❤
One of a Kind🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
A great song sung perfectly by the queen of the blues.
What? 😂
@@superamandaYes she’s know as the British Queen of the Blues.
My favourite voice.
Along with Marvin Gaye.
Hope someone is creating Ellie Brooks Musical stage n movie, a truly most beautiful lady love from Wilma n Family.🎼🎵🦉🏴🌈💗⭐🎸🍺🍾🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍
Absolutely what a great singer and song 🎵 PHIL MAGUIRE MEATH IRELAND
Sheer class
Baby was Peter Allen's sister, the song writer's autobiographical story (the great Carol Bayer Sager's co-wrote it). Peter Allen's career/life much later became a Broadway Musical "The Boy from Oz" starring fellow Aussie Hugh Jackman! Melissa Manchester excelled in those alto-range mellow yet emotionally powerful money notes that led to all those great hits. She was a backup singer for Barry Manilow in the early 1970s.
that is something I never knew. I am into connections from past to present and present to a little bit of future so love this. thank you Mark
Elkie does it better IMO
Carol Bayer Sager is so talented.
Class
Also the late Joe Longthorne sang this beautifully!!! It’s here on UA-cam!
When our music industry had the best talent. What's happened these days SMH
Her haors lovely on here reminds me of my trapeeze ma 💕 ❤️
My hubby all .. 😢😢❤❤❤❤

Got to see Melissa perform this at the Great Peace March send off 3/1/86. Elkie does a great cover of this classic.
Elkie had a Uk hit with this before Manchester.
Old one ✋ x 🤔😢

Couldn't agree with you more Simon.😊

Absolutely
Second only to No More the Fool.
Beautiful song and how adele would like to sound lol
I actually came here because of schitts creek when Roland is blasting this in the motel. Decent song though.
Check out the Melissa Manchester recording which is the one used in 'Schitt's Creek'. :)
i was a baby boy was.nt allowed to cry
saw her with robert palmer in vinegar joe
Interesting tremolo in her high voice.
Jane Lee.... this one is for you. xx
DAVID CAN YOU TURN THAT MUSIC DOWN PLEASE?
We do but no one listening
Don’t think we should hold our feeling 🤔 or hide them mental health
Don't forget this was the 70s . You didn't discuss your mental health especially if you were male - it was seen as being weak
💏💃
David, could you turn that down, please?
Fantastic vocalist 👏 along with Alison moyet well before Adele came along
reminds me of pinning my middle finger on room door....
Hey she kinda looks like Teela Na.
Torhild Nigar, you clearly plagiarised when you wrote I Evighet. The first line of the chorus of that song is identical to this one.
Uncle John xxx M
Look for vinegar joe
Clas
Lovely version but this is Melissa Manchester’s song.
It’s NOT a Melissa Song.
The vocal is not in since 🙈
