- Cold start of BMW 120d E87 with N47 diesel engine at -15°C. At first engine is shaky, that's most likely caused by defective glow plug. Remember to preheat your glow plugs and turn off any additional electric equipment to not drain your battery when starting the engine.
BMW N47 engine can be found in:
1-Series E81, E82, E87, E88, F20
3-Series E90, E91, E92, E93, F30, F31
5-Series E60, E61

Them oil starved cams and pistons and turbo love a good rev on a cold start.
That's why his engine sounds as rough as it does
I was thinking the same thing .
for all of you who have faulty glow plugs or glow plug regulator; I advise you to do that; if you have electricity and a hair dryer in the cushion, then direct it into the suction channel of the air filter, add warm air and your vehicle will start immediately even with faulty glow plugs.
never accelerate after cold start because engine oil is thick. you can damage an engine. it needs heat up on idle while you scraping windows for example
Jonas Jono yes but upto 2000 is ok. If this fault wasn't there there no need to rev but the rev helped the glow plug get to temperature and stop the bore misfiring to overfuel
What is with the Oilpressure at ~800 U/min?
Its literally 2k rpm...
Don't rev it to 2000, don't touch the accelerator. The most piston/cylinder wear in a engine is when it's cold. Just let it sit at 1000rpm, the oil pressure will go up and the engine will warm a bit also.
If you must go immediately and cannot wait to warm, keep it low revs, under 2000rpm until it's warm.
dude cars from the 90's yes you had to wait, these new cars you can drive right away why waste fuel.. Of course don't push it hard before it warms up.
@@DjordjeSrpski gravity was the same in the 90s, so the oil will be on the bottom of the engine and not in the pistons where it's needed. also the oil pumps are basically the same, not really pushing up oil up so fast ghat you can instantly rev it to 2000 or even drive off. it's worse in really cold weather, the oil is thick and much harder for the pump to pump it so it will take much more time than in summer. so no, don't drive off and don't rev it at all if you can!!!
On these diesels if you have to go right away, drive between 1.5-2k rpm and low throttle. Much better for engine then 1.2k and more throttle because the turbo is vnt it regulates depending on throttle position, it will put more stress on engine with lower revs and more throttle

glad it doesnt sound like that on cold start.
This may/june will be doing alot of engine cleaning.
Replacing seals
Cleaning egr
New seals on fuel injectors
New glow plugs
Intake manifold cleaning.
Fan belt.
Coolant
And anything else that i can see on there.
Well, e46 m47n 2.0d with 3 defective spark plugs does not even start at -5 :DD
do you 100% sure this is a glow plugs issue? N47 engine should preheat glow plugs right away you open the door.
I’m pretty sure. Diag scan showed that two out of four were damaged.
@@mrfixpl Do you know if iCarsoft 910 II can show the BMW's damaged glow plugs?
I don't understand this pressing start without the clutch thing. Is it the correct way to do it like that? Doesn't BMW automatically preheat the glow plugs either way?
Dude that is way smoother than my E91 320d when starting from cold, like -10... it really struggles to kick into life after a night out in that kind of temp... maybe it needs glow plugs after having done 210k miles on the original almost everything apart from suspension shockers all round and a coil spring...Having said that I'm sort of getting to the point of thinking at 13 years old it may be time to let the car go to the big car park in the country....
Nieźle mówisz po angielsku. Jesteś Polakiem
Dzięki! Nie jest idealnie, ale cośtam ludzie rozumieją 😅
Do you have any smoke from exhaust
How is it going with your timing chain? Did you had any problems? Do you have any tips how to treat the chain for a longer lifetime? All the best and keep up your excellent work!
Hi! Just checked the chain noise for the second time (first time 6 months ago) and no issues there. I guess that chain either replaced before or it was problem-free from the factory.
If you change oil regularly, you won't have problems with timing chain for at least 200 000miles. And regularly, doesn't mean you follow those insane periods that oil or car manufacturer recommends, you have to do it much more often. Keep in mind, every chain, every part on any car wears out eventually.
Jeśli on trwa, czy samochód w jakiś sposób sygnalizuje to?
Da się wymusić odpowiednim programem diagnostycznym.
Trwa jakieś 20-25 minut. Odbywa się w czasie jazdy.
Nie jest sygnalizowane.
Mr fix please help I'm trying to open the green menu in my 2009 Audi A4 Avant but it won't show up and yes I have tried holding the setup and car buttons
Did you enabled it first with diagnostic tool?
Ten dźwięk silnika to problem ze świecą żarową?
Czasem mój N47 klepie w podobny sposób podczas przyspieszania na 2 biegu.
Czy to problem z wtryskami?
I changed all 4 glow plugs on my 120D, but it still starts shaky and hardly in cold. I had codes before changing: "1th, 2th glow plugs" and "4th glow plug communication", now after changing, i still have "1, 2 glow plugs". Any ideas?
I believe that there's a glow plug module which can also be faulty.
It was module, I changed it, all faults gone.
@@Alteriukas before you Change is it any smoke when you start the engine?
@@vitormendes3310 glow plugs is white / grey smoke.
Change the module or glow plug control unit, which situated just below the throttle body. Very easy to change.
Wouldn't a defective glow plug produce an engine check light & fault code?
AFAIK:Opel/Vauxhall - yes.
BMW, Volvo, VAG - no.
mr-fix Thank you. I need to check mine then.
Check my video about Carista. I tested in on my E87 and found a glow plug code on a specific cylinder.
mr-fix Did you get like blue ish smoke from exhaust when first starting up which disappears after 10 seconds?
No. No smoke at all.
Bluish is most likely engine oil directly from piston rings, leaking turbo...
mr-fix but if that was the case wouldn't the car be continually giving off blue smoke rather than only on cold start which only lasts for 15 seconds max?
not if piston ring expands with temperature and seals the gap.
I have blue smoke right after a cold start, but it dissappears after about 5 seconds. i have no dpf and in my case it is completely normal. that is diesel which was not completely burnt, especially by defective glow plugs.
Dominik Lösl does your car hesitate when you first turn it on (the engine rev move back and forth when ur engine starts)?
Hej wam.
My bmw 1 series 118d 2008 has the cold st at r issue white smoke comes out of the exhaust and rough idle revs up and down, could that mean I hafto change my glow plugs ?
did you find the problem causing that to your car?
@@rokasmisiunas5753 Did you? I have the same problem now
You need to wait between 30/60 secondes
Any timing chain problems with this engine ? What year was this car ?
It was 2008. No timing chain problems what so ever. Was running factory chain last years when I sold it.
mr-fix how many miles when sold ? How often did you change oil ? Thanks
total: 210kkm,
oil change once a year, usually around 15kkm-20kkm.
Hey. How would the car react if all glow plugs are not working? How long will the car still crank? Since this is a start button, thats why I am asking.
If engine is not starting within 3 seconds, there's something wrong.
If the engine is cold (like winter cold) and glow plugs are not working, most likely engine will start after 5 seconds but it will be rough, it will work on a single cylinder at first, there will be some amount of grey smoke from the unburned diesel. All of those symptoms should go away after 30-60 seconds, but before that happens it can damage you engine and transmission mount. If it's really cold you can drain your battery flat before engine starts.
mr-fix I have to crank for 1min 30seconds when its about -5c. The battery handles it good, no drop in cranking power. But Its of course not good for the starter.
I'm new to BMW, but I think that there was an issue with the glob plugs module. Bring some attention to it on your next service.
I had broken glow plugs module, so noone of 4 glow plugs were working, in cold winter it cranks 3-4 sec then u have to reset the button and up to -10 it starts roughly but in my case, cleared in 5 secons (all cylinders were lit after 5 sec), below -10 C with my kinda weak battery it wouldnt start at all, even after long crank
You shouldn't rev it like that cold, how come you have so many subscribers with such bad advice?
I was young and stupid.
@@mrfixpl fair enough
@@mrfixpldid the car sustain any damage?
no.
Pozdrawiam :)
Bad sound on start.my m47 163 ps sounda much better on cold starts
Be a defective engine before you know it
When u hear that very clicky noice you should change glow plug
Are you sure ? How long glow the plugs ? 20 seconde?
This is tragedy, diesel sucks... Only 6 cylinder gasoline ;)
