I have a 320d from 2009 with automatic transmission. At 495.000km I got no problems. Before i got the car my grandpa had it. He also got no problems. Everything runs fine. Also the timing chain was never changed. But it’s still in good condition. When the engine is warm we also push it to its limits. On the autobahn we often drive over 200 km/h and so on I am really satisfied with this engine.
As long as its serviced regularly, oil changes are a must, it should run just fine, you can't thrash it as much as the 3.0 but still a very reliable car when looked after
@@mustafamohammad7488 Still first chain at 269500km. A friend of mine also does have a n47 with 240000km on the first chain. I think changing the oil at the half time of the standard Intervall helps a lot.we change arround every 15-17kkm oil instead of the 35.000km the I drive recommends.
I have F11 525d with N47, Love my engine, plenty power, very economical. Mine done 278k km already, but haven't changed timing chain yet. Also my wife has same engine only in 120d, also 310k km and still going strong, timing chain was replaced due to bad previous owner's maintenance.
We have an E91 N47 on 111k miles. I’ve been servicing the oil every 5k miles. Its’s £40 for an oil service and an hour of my time. Fully intend to take it on Nurburgring trips and track days instead of the M5 now and again. Why not... 👍
i got the 118d e87 105kw with like 245tkm and he runs like a beast. Its a proper proper engine if you maintain it regularly (like everything else in life). I replaced my chain on time and i had some sensor/termostat issues in the past but the engine works really fine
I just bought 2008 e91 with N47 engine, guy i bought it from said chain was replaced, I have my doubts, it drives fantastic,after watching your video I'm just going to service every 7k, great video.
Thanks for posting. I've owned my Msport 118d for 5 years with only a one major fault being the Velux rings on rear drive shafts, it's on 89k on original clutch too and still pulls strong. I too had heard nothing but bad things and horror stories about the timing chain, but the I try and change oil and micro filter every 8- 10,000 miles. The engine on idle is quieter than some petrol engines, and pulls like a train from 50 - 70mph and is absolutely one of the best driving cars I've ever owned. So far so good. I also only use Shell V power diesel fuel.
I have a F31 320d and its been brilliant. Unfortunately the chaing and timing system did need replacing. It ended up costing me 1450 euros for a new chain, timers, spanners and everything, so honestly it could have been a lot worse. Appart from that it is flawless even now at 245k. Its a very good engine, its powerful, and its very efficicent.

Great engine except timing change if you replace,after that you will be fine, the engine in great, no vibration like m47,it's silance,very low consumtion and also great power.
Its not bad engine, but you have to be sure few things are ok. I have last model year 143hp n47 117 000 km. Good fuel consumption and i like sound when accelerate. EGR is inspected and they put new part in BMW by GW. Timing chain is too loose already, have to change. But car dealer pays 100% of it.
Thanks for the info. I’ve put a deposit down on a 2012 120d with 31k miles. It has full service history so I’m hoping if I change the oil on it every 6k I should vastly reduce the chances of timing chain issues.
If you know how to maintain a car this is a very reliable engine . I have a friend with an F11 5 series it has this engine 320D and it has 650k KM and its still running great ! Oil changes are made yearly at 10k km, 2nd timing chain which has improvements over the factory one lasted him 350k km.
130k, full service history and only thing I need to do is abs sensors, and two new tyres, no chain noise at all but my cat did blow itself out the back of my car at 70 mph an the m1, can hear a bit of rattle inside there a bit of ceramic or something left in there, but tbh since it did that its picked a bit of power back up

I don't have any rattling noises while cold starting or idling tho. do you know what are potential costs ? whole timing chain(and tensioners) replacement I'm looking at £900? what about just inspection ?

I’ve got an e90 320d n47 lci 61 plate and had it for 2 years now and the intercooler has just shat its pants which gives me an excuse to buy an upgraded one 🤙🤙. Apart from that it’s been wicked little car been mapped on 125k now
320d n47, 177hp, remapped to 200hp/420nm, 310k km on the clock, no issues, oil change every 5k km. Basically I change the oil and filters every 10k and in between, every 5k km, just the oil :)
@@mrwannamakeyousmile1001 I used the BMW one, 5w30 LL04 but I heard there are counterfeits and last changes I've done them with Total Ineo MC3 5w30 Low Saps, it's a relatively cheap oil and it seems the engine sounds better with it, it may be placebo but who knows, the good thing about it is that it has a QR code that can be scanned to make sure it's a legit product

I have a E91 with that engine and 143 hp, it is really not that strong, but ok and runs great with nearly 400.000 kilometers, when it dies, then comes a chip 320d N47 in the car (218 hp)

I have a little problem maybe you could help, I own a 120d e82 with 70k miles, I have only a little problem a whining noise between 1100 and 1400 rpm that disappears on neutral. The noise happens on all gears. I have lifted the car trying to hear it but strangely did not occur. Do you have any idea ?

my N47 engine (520d 2013) before i bought it had long service intervals (15-25k) fleet car, could i "save" the timing chain wear since i do way shorter oil changes (7-12k) ? (proper warm up, no racing style driving, no immediate switch off the engine after long trips, always OEM quality parts)
Can you hear the chain whirring when you stand next to the passenger side wheel arch? If so, get it done ASAP. if there is no scratchy whirring sound then you're fine but keep your ear open for the sound
Hey man, I like to use castrol edge LL04 0W-30 most people use 5w-30 but 0w-30 gives better protection on cold starts which is when the timing chain is most likely to stretch!:)
See I’ve been looking for a 1 series and the timing chain is throwing me off and convincing me to buy a 2015+ b37/b47 engine model. Not sure... otherwise if there wasn’t issues I’d of got 2014 n47
The best thing about the N47 Is when the chain snaps and your left with a £3500-£4000 bill coz the engine s ruined then you scrap it,thats the best thing about a N47
Just got off the phone to bmw and they say chains have to be changed every 60k which means engine out and new kit installed every 60k l'm writing this so anyone who's considering buying a bmw or mini with the N47 is aware of the fault that it will go wrong the car.

So basically you could tell us nothing good about the N47 engine... only that Bmw have placed the usual service areas under the bonnet, just like every other manufacturer 🤣🤣
@@robbieshaft yes they are, had mine checked 6months ago. The plastic was worn, brittle and bad shape. Got lucky that they did not fall inside. I recommend every n47 user to have these checked. Mine were removed and blanked, mileage 225k km. Did not require reprogramming.
@@TheSpectralus The N47 has the flaps connected to one metal rod across all 4 swirl flaps, haven't heard that much issues with these. More with the M47 which has individual flaps which break quite alot. Either way removing them is quite easy but you lose some low end torque though.

Ive got a 2012 318d, my belt snapped on 125k, snapped 6 valves, i still have the car, but i do recommend doing a dpf delete and remapping it.

F30 316d 2015 mod. with N47, changed timing chain at 140.000 miles ;)
There's a 90 hp version of the 2.0 for the Norwegian marked - it can be chipped to 180 hp by ESS tuning.

Mine has driven 330 000 km now and wil now change the turbo for the first time, timing chain stil not changed

Check its not your air conditioning! sounds strange but mine used to make a noise:)
DriveLife no it’s not aircon it happens both with aircon and off I’m more suspecting rear differential

I use 0W30 myself for better protection on cold starts, 5W30 is fine but just for extra piece of mind I use the 0W30 😃
I use the bmw twinpower 5-30 bc of the timing chain
I have E93d only get 38 mpg & I drive steadily I get 33 mpg out off my 2.8 Z3

Any ideas why I have intermittent boost on My 123d?? No warning lights! Turbo Dont kick in till I’m up and running!
123d are twin turbo if you have no power low down hour smaller turbo maybe going going out

That engine is a nasty engine,m47 is better . The timming chain breaks ,intake flaps break and fall in , the turbo shaft splits in 2 and many more.
Most effected engines between 2007 and 2009. If its looked after ie. Engine oil changes between the bmw intervals then it should be good.
Swirl flaps are not prone to breaking on this engine. The M47 has the bad swirl flaps and need blanking
