I have a 320d from 2009 with automatic transmission. At 495.000km I got no problems. Before i got the car my grandpa had it. He also got no problems. Everything runs fine. Also the timing chain was never changed. But it’s still in good condition.
When the engine is warm we also push it to its limits. On the autobahn we often drive over 200 km/h and so on
I am really satisfied with this engine.

Thanks for posting. I've owned my Msport 118d for 5 years with only a one major fault being the Velux rings on rear drive shafts, it's on 89k on original clutch too and still pulls strong. I too had heard nothing but bad things and horror stories about the timing chain, but the I try and change oil and micro filter every 8- 10,000 miles. The engine on idle is quieter than some petrol engines, and pulls like a train from 50 - 70mph and is absolutely one of the best driving cars I've ever owned. So far so good. I also only use Shell V power diesel fuel.

I have a F31 320d and its been brilliant. Unfortunately the chaing and timing system did need replacing. It ended up costing me 1450 euros for a new chain, timers, spanners and everything, so honestly it could have been a lot worse. Appart from that it is flawless even now at 245k. Its a very good engine, its powerful, and its very efficicent.
