Luciano Pavarotti (1935-2007) sings Dick Johnson's farewell aria, "Ch'ella mi creda" from the final act of Puccini's opera "La Fanciulla del West". This piece was the final encore on Pavarotti's September 23, 1973 recital at UCLA's Royce Hall.
His "Ch'ella mi creda" sounds much more pitiful and felt than the other tenors. A sad regretful tone to it. Rest in peace to the great Luciano Pavarotti

@@redgrapeskins If you go CD store or searching, most of his stuff was done at 3 tenors era and in late 1980's. That is the point of my comments. He was not this sound at those famous time of 5 million viewers site.

I heard Pavarotti five years later, when he gave a recital in Milwaukee.
Not the largest tenor voice I've heard in person. (That belonged to the great Jon Vickers, whom I heard as Florestan and Parsifal in Chicago.) But Pav's voice was then so vibrant, so finely focused, that you forgot he was singing in a hall where the acoustics do not always flatter unamplified singers --
Hard to find a better voice than his. Thank God we have his recordings forever.
His addio is one of the greatest ever heard,no wimping out at the end of aria

Pavarotti is said to have stated that, before singing an aria new to him, he'd first listen to how Jussi Björling sang it, then practice it accordingly. The likeness is uncanny.

It's unfortunate that he put on so much weight so that most of his singing was in concerts rather than in opera performances.

Todd Tolson As my personal and humble opinion, Pavarotti was the best tenor that ever lived. I ask because there seems a lot of this where people don’t put their opinions but rather other people’s. Cheers.
He was not the best tenor ever lived!! You can't say "yes he was"! I could name tens better!! Caruso, Gigli, Lauri Volpi, Mario del Monaco, Corelli, Giuseppe Anselmi, Mario Filippeschi, Aureliano Pertile, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Francesco Merli, Alfredo Krauss and the list is so long. Are you kidding me? What you call "popular belief" is mere marketing, money that reach millions of people and direct their taste. Maybe it would be a good idea to dig a bit more on the opera subject before banging such a statement based on poor knowledge. Popular belief says Justin Bibier is one of the most excellent singers ever lived as numbers say so. Come on man, you can do a lot better than this. Having said that, all respect for Pavarotti, but the best? not nearly
Pavarotti was marvelous when he was young and had so much energy when he sang 'Che Gelida Manina' so beautifully. He sang too many tough dramatic tenor roles all over the world and raising money for many causes. His exciting lyric voice suffered from overwork as many wonderful tenors suffered like Carreras and De Stefano who sang roles they were not suited for. Philip Tropea tenor
I am not musician, but I sensed the difference long ago, his voice was much less pleasing than early ages, but most recording was done obviously during mass campaign ages, he did push opera into the public domain and the top diplomatic role of operatic singing. But you think it was due to his stretch himself into bigger heavy roles?!

Really? Pavarotti sang 10 Cheniers in 1996 at age 61, 5 Aida's in 1986 at age 51and 5 Aida's in 2001 at age 66. He sang 10 Ernani's in 1983 at age 48, 6 Turandot's in 1997 at age 62. I think you're mistaken
@everyday tenor I never stated that Pav was a dramatic tenor. Yes, Pavarotti was ''never''a dramatic tenor. My point in my last statement was, LP took on the heavier roles as he aged or as an older tenor. Even in his 40s his middle voice became broader and as you say, he did manage the heavier roles. He sang 2 ''I Pagliacis'' at the Met in 1994 at age 59, so there was hardly a cost to him in singing I Pagliacci. His repertoire grew as his voice matured or broadened in his mid 40s. It's always interesting when a tenor does something outside of his repertoire, as Del Monaco and Corelli both sang Lucia. MDM singing Boheme, Gigli and Bjorling singing Radames. Enjoy

Technically so perfect but cold. Just my two cents.
I think Pav had to work a little bit to be warm, and the nature of his voice seemed aloof at times, but still a great lyric tenor.

Pavarotti is lyric tenor in nature.. his early work sounds better, but it is far from dramatic tenors like Mario.
MDM is truly fantastic in this aria, but the greatest ever in this aria is Mario Filippeschi.
MDM yelled inappropriately through songs and sang cluelessly at times. A powerful voice but not nice to listen to. Like a power pitcher that can only throw a fastball and walks 10 guys a game.

Domingo’s voice is wooly and unremarkable. He’s a great musician but a mediocre voice. No comparison to Pavarotti.

Pavarotti never sang the role on stage, but that doesn't mean he can't sing the aria...and sing it very beautifully indeed. AND, I would add that he sings it far better than 99% of the "pseudo-tenors" posing as Dick Johnson today.

Pavarotti is lyrical, Giacomini is dramatic.
Filippeschi completely destroys Pavarotti in everything on this aria. And it isn't the only aria that he totally outclasses him.

guido greco I know Meastro Corelli was magnificent, Maestro Del Monaco too. My favorite Italian tenor is Giuseppe Giacomini, though. He, a spinto tenor too.
