To me, de'l Monaco, is the ideal tenor voice - he could sing anything in the lyric-dramatic repertoire. His timbre was that of pure diamonds. With Corelli, he rules the Olympus of tenors. Not even Jupiter could be bored to perform every night - so fortunately, among his tenor sons there were two immortals!
Both probably made the world of tenors of that time complete, overlapping a bit and one overtaking the other... they were the Tenors of the Golden Age...

I cannot let this go away. Both Corelli and del Mónaco had the most beatiful voces in their categories, but anytime I hear Corelli, I find his pronuntiation very tough as well as his phrasing less than approppriate. And for del Mónaco, I've never heard anything alike a diminuendo performed by him. And I'm a deep opera lover, singer myself. I cannot stop thinkink than an inconditional love to a singer really stops you from learning and loving something on every tenor that has something good. I mean, di Stefanos's diminuendos, pavarotti's vocal technique, everyone has something to offer, except for a bunch of current ones :(

Commentare del monaco non e' difficile, per quanto riguarda Otello, forse l'unica opera che lo rappresenta, avrei preferito lo interpretasse Franco corelli, ma purtroppo chissà. Del monaco voce troppo squillante, non male, tuttavia eseguiva troppi acuti, timbro sempre uguale, dritto come un autostrada. Per dare un idea, un abbinamento che gradisco di timbro riguarda il violino e il violoncello magari condito con l'aggiunta della viola, queste tre sfumature le aveva corelli, capace di dare effetto alla voce e non di urlare come facevano e fanno certi tenori.

I think this must be the greatest recording of Fanciulla ever - Del Monaco, Steber, Guelfi, Mitropoulos, even greats like de Palma and Tozzi in relatively small roles. What more could one ask for?
No one sang Puccini like MDM. When Kaufman sang this Aria it was so bad and sad. It's like day and night Mario Del Manoco was born to sing Puccini.He had no equal so much passion in his voice something truly fantastic. Arnold Bourbon Amaral

Ho ascoltato del monaco in diverse interpretazioni, dunque, questo tenore, pur cercando delle affinità, personalmente lo ritrovo meglio nell'otello, sebbene rimango dell'idea che se lo avesse interpretato corelli, chissà! Poi devo aggiungere, un melomane vero, meglio ancora se musicista anche appassionato, capisce meglio la differenza di voci e di stili, del monaco voce bella, ma squillante come una tromba e dritta come un autostrada. Si provi invece a sentire corelli nella stessa interpretazione, in ch'ella mi creda libero e lontano, ascolti attentamente le due voci o timbri, poi capirà il senso

Unico trio che rivedrei sono, frazzoni, corelli, gobbi, quelli erano benedetti, aggiungo che la frazzoni, diceva, Minnie per rappresentarla, bisogna fare scintille, altrimenti fanciulla e'destinata a fare fiasco, corelli, un dio, gobbi, lo sguardo, quel viso in grado di dare al pubblico una certezza.
Lui ha dedicato tutta la sua vita alla lirica quando si è ammalato disse con Giuseppe Di Stefano che andò a trovarlo ( quando non potrò più cantare io morirò poco dopo accadde una perdita immensa per il mondo intero
His voice is much more beautiful than Corelli's could ever be even after Corelli studied with Lauri-Volpi. Bigness is not more beautiful. In fact, I sing Grieg's 'I Love You' (youtube.com) better than Corelli. He has no finesse with lyrical art songs. del Monaco was a little hammy in his acting but he is the greatest dramatic tenor of ALL TIME!. I heard him in my favorite opera, Andrea Chenier at the old Met in 1958. His voice is not only emotional but very big. In the lyric roles, I love to hear Gigli with his exquisite floating pianissimi. Surprising though Gigli does beautifully in Andrea Chenier and Pagliacci on records. Bjorling was a disappointment on stage. I couldn't hear his beautiful, brilliant voice at the old MET in 1957. Cavalleria was not his forte anyway. I enjoyed him on records. The tenors that I can't stand are Jonas Kaufmann who sounds constipated, and Rolando Villazon who has a lovely sound but not a good vocal production and can't sing high notes. I can't watch his facial expressions or his hammy concerts. He sings 'Non ti Scordar di me' with Bocelli and Katherine Jenkins. He yells his way through and spoils the performance. I heard of Jussi's live performance is not as big voice as recording, the machine loves his voice, I guess. Villazon was lyric full of passion and charms before 2005 or around, too popular and pushed too high too wide... used to be the season opener of all big houses...Back to the start, I agree totally that MDM is super here than those other popular names.
