What do you use to record your bass? I'm thinking about uploading my own covers and most mics don't pick up bass or if they do it sounds like crap, especially when vocals are added into the mix. All I have right now is a Toshiba Satellite (pretty ghetto compared to a Mac or homemade desktop).

when i plug my headphones in my amp to play my bass i get a lot of static.. would a compressor help to reduce the static and make it sound clearer?
