Yeah, I'm curious to what David would say or other great bassists out there. I have muted the E string with my thumb once in awhile, but it doesn't always seem necessary. Leaving my thumb up was a habit I started out with and probably would have stuck with if my Dad/teacher didn't tell me otherwise.

i've been playing guitar now for a number of years and i would like to take up bass (mainly for songwriting purposes). right now i've been considering getting an epiphone thunderbird (i would get gibson but it's out of my price range tbh) and was wondering if it the right way to go?
My teacher keeps bugging about how I should keep my left thumb on the back of the neck *at all time*. And yet most of the masterful players I see often rest it on the E string? Is that helpful in any way (to mute the E string perhaps) or is it just some kind of lazyness?
