got to say my friend I've seen a lot of gardening information videos but yours is perfect for me , it's like having a thousand teachers tell you the same thing, but for some reason you only understand the way one of them presents it , well done and please please keep doing them , thankyou so much 👍👍
Hey Stevie thanks so much for your comment really do appreciate your very kind words it means a lot, I certainly will be continuing to produce gardening content. 😁👍
Wow ...at last someone working on a real mature tree. We have 10 x 90 year old trees this size and for the past twenty years I have pruned in the summer with an extra bit of spur pruning in the winter. I have now managed to produce fruiting branches much lower on the trees and my husband takes the height off the top in winter to keep them manageable and reduce the risk of me breaking my neck off the ladder when I do the top growth with the long pruners. I started to do this because it was such a cold job in January plus waiting for dry days when I wasn't working but was never quite sure I was doing the right thing. People kept telling me I would only produce more leafy growth. Now proven wrong! It's a nice job in July/August and I have now taken to some spur pruning at the same time because it is easier to see the ones that need to go. PS We inherited the trees when they were close on 40 years old so I felt brave enough to experiment on them. The apples are as scrummy as ever! 😁 Thanks for the video.
Hey Pauline thanks so much for the comment and your story that's lovely to hear. Thats fantastic to have that many old trees and sounds like you are doing everything right with them for your situation. I also like to take the height out to keep it manageable and encourage lower fruiting buds. Yes it doesn't produce more leafy growth if you catch it at the right time if too early absolutely you will get leafy growth. I sometimes do the same while you are up there you can do the odd thinning out of spurs as long as it's not too drastic, I show this in my newer summer apple pruning video it's well worth a watch if your interested. That's great to hear we can only learn if we experiment and try these things out. 😁👍
Really appreciate this video! We moved into a new house a few months back and it has an apple tree. I'd never heard of summer pruning until my dad told me that the apple tree would need it. I tried to read instructions but it's hard to understand without seeing someone do it. Thankfully I found your video. Massive help.
Hey Mary your most welcome. Yes pruning apple trees has always been associated with being a winter job but you can also prune in the summer and that really boosts the apple crop well done for your Dad recommending it. Really glad this helped you that's why I made this channel, thanks for your feedback means a lot. 👍 Hope your pruning goes well 😁
Hello thanks for the comment your very welcome glad this video helped you. I have a new apple pruning video coming out soon so that maybe of interest to you 👍
Best way to deal with the cuttings - a shreder. The resulting compost from all our shredding provides the growing medium for my hanging baskets which I hang, 2 per tree, out of the branches of the apple trees. It eliminates issues with slugs and snails too and adds a welcome 'extra' layer of colour to the garden. Lovely to get a reply. Thanks.
Hey Pauline thanks for the comment and recommendation. What a great idea to use your apple shredding in hanging baskets in the apple trees. I can imagine it looks great thanks for sharing 😁👍
I am in Western NY, near niagara Falls area. Apples are king in this area, however I had none in my yard. Always loved the blossoms. I now have several crabapple I harvested wild from fields near the shop I worked at. They blossom beautifully and I had a couple spots in the yard in mind for them. I harvested them in late summer at about 7 feet tall. October. I had to cut some of the Tap Root I was nervous about doing. I dug nice size holes for them and a trench for the Tap root the direction it was naturally growing. I watered them often, keeping them wet the rest of the season. I was told they would not make it. I was told they would not blossom the first spring. I watched them defy those sentiments. Life needs a few things, food, water, and care. I am committed to offering them these needs and they respond absolutely well. I am new(ish) to pruning so your guide is very helpful. It is Jan 31 2024 and out I go for my winter pruning. I did watch your winter pruning video. I have also planted, now three years, Mcintosh and Jonathan 3' approx. 95 cm. each. Bought them cheap end of season.. TALK TO STORE MANAGERS!! It pays. So, winter was close I wanted to protect them from rabbits that will eat the fresh bark. I caged around the young trees about a few feet high thinking good enough. Winter came and dumped feet of snow. The rabbits walked on top of the snow a 'girdled' the young trees. They ate all the way around them and quite a bit up. I was told they will die, pull them. Again Life is relentless. I left them until a new shoot grew below the damage. I now have trees back to the original height. It took a few seasons but, again, it takes a lot to kill them completely. Thank you for your time in presenting a very straight forward look at this art of pruning, and shaping.
Just finished my apple tree’s first real winter prune. Looking forward to summer prune and great crop of apples this year. Thanks from Morro Bay California
Hey Cornelia thanks so much for you comment. I can't recommend this pruning technique enough as in a garden it keeps the apple tree shaped yet very fruit productive 😁👍
This is really clear and informative. So many videos show pruning a trained small tree. I've got a large mature tree (60+ years), this video is just what I needed to tell me how to prune it. Thanks!
Hey dominiccox6948 that's wonderful to hear glad it came across well. Thanks for taking the time to comment hopefully I will have more apple pruning videos out in the future 😁👍
I usually watch videos between 1.5-2x speed your the first person I've ever slowed one down for! 😂 What a beautiful tree! In such few words still a lot of knowledge! Thanks again glad I found you!
Hey Sean thanks for the comment much appreciated. It's a really lovely tree I have been pruning for about 7 years now when I first pruned it, it was hugely overgrown with a lot of long bowing branches and very congested. After that very hard winter prune I continued with a yearly summer prune to re build up the fruiting buds (creating spur networks) and I did do one winter prune on it a couple years ago to thin some the spurs out but other than that it's the yearly summer prune. I wanted to keep it neat and well shaped as possible as the path and grass are there but still wanted a really productive apple tree. 😁👍
Thanks good instruction. Our old Granny Smith tree, I pruned it earlier in June and now they have regrown twice as long. Crazy growth. It also flowered and fruited much earlier than last year. So I should now wait a couple more weeks and go for it. Northern California. I definitely need one of the long handled pruner.
Hey GDR thanks for your comment glad you found this helpful. Sounds like if you are able to next year wait until pruning it a bit later when the tips have hardened then it won't put on a second flush of growth so you only need to prune it once 👍 the long handle pruners are fantastic 😁👍
Thx for explaining the buds but I would've like to see you show the 3_5 buds on the tree that you keep, pointing each out so I could see better what you're talking about. Thx!!!
Hey thanks for the comment and feedback I will certainly try to do more close ups during explaining to help in future videos. Glad you found the video helpful. 😁👍
Hello Cherry thanks very much for your comment glad you found this helpful. It's a far easier and more productive way to prune than a heavy winter prune 😁👍
Yes I certainly will do a video on it when I give it a winter prune. At the moment I am keeping it under control and productive with a summer prune every year. It will need a thin out and a reduction prune in the winter at some point so will do a video on it then. 😁👍
Hey Adam, I've just recently started watching your videos, which are very informative and educational! It would be useful if you could state what tools you use (ie. brand & model) in the video description - I would be very interested to know what long reach pruner you were using here, and also the stepladder, as I would like to get these for myself 😊
Hello thanks very much for your support glad the videos help you. I certainly will try to implement that for the future with links to the tools/equipment I use and recommend as there are a lot of bad gardening tools out there which people should avoid. I will do videos on tools I use in the future as well as some tools are tailored to professionals using them every day which the same quality may not be needed for smaller residential gardens. The steps I use are unbranded but are the 3 leg adjustable tripod ladders which are fantastic henchmen is a well known brand for these ladders and the long reach pruner is an ARS cut and hold extendable pruner. Hope this helps 😁👍
Hey Simon, with these cuttings they can be composed straight away as are usually sappy and immature so break down quicker but if you have a small shredder to hand that will speed things up. Alternatively goats love to eat them if you know of anyone with them 😁👍
Hey Ellie thanks for taking the time to watch both videos it will really pay off when you prune your apple tree. It's a lovely tree which is now very productive after doing some heavy winter prunes to start with then following up now every year with just summer prunes. I am not sure of the age at a guess I imagine 60 years old 👍
Hello arthill ah I would love to it's a very satisfying job to do. I will do a video in the future on a mature apple tree renovation winter prune. That was the prunne I did on this tree 7 years ago to get it back into shape and producing apples again. 😁👍
Hello, thanks for the feedback. When I first started pruning this tree I did some very heavy reductions to the branch system and thinning out since then I carry out a summer prune to spur on apple growth as I get a good high quality yield every year. At some point in the future I will be doing another winter prune to thin out some branches but overall I am happy with the tree shape and structure adding a nice feature to the garden. Could you describe how you think this tree could be improved? 👍

Wow a stunning monster of a tree 😍
Hey, thanks yes it's certainly a nice old one you don't often see these anymore 👍
Brilliantly delivered, extremely informative, and to the point. A pleasure to watch.

Hey Srw_cricket thanks for the comment it's a great pruning combination then you can just do a summer prune every year. All the best with it 👍

Mushroom shape ❤❤❤
Thanks for noticing, that structure works really well for an old apple tree, looks good in a garden as well 💚🍄👍
Like the ladder! Do you burn these cuttings or can they be composted?
Hey Simon, with these cuttings they can be composed straight away as are usually sappy and immature so break down quicker but if you have a small shredder to hand that will speed things up. Alternatively goats love to eat them if you know of anyone with them 😁👍
That’s a really nice looking apple after it was pruned. The trunk is very big. How old is it?
Hey Ellie thanks for taking the time to watch both videos it will really pay off when you prune your apple tree. Oh, please come and prune my 5 trees. They are mature and so out of control.
Hello arthill ah I would love to it's a very satisfying job to do. I will do a video in the future on a mature apple tree renovation winter prune. That was the prunne I did on this tree 7 years ago to get it back into shape and producing apples again. 😁👍

😁👍
pardon me please but thiw tree is not properly structured you should prune drastically in the winter too much branchew one on the top of the other.
Hello, thanks for the feedback. When I first started pruning this tree I did some very heavy reductions to the branch system and thinning out since then I carry out a summer prune to spur on apple growth as I get a good high quality yield every year.
