We lost another member of the Highwaymen yesterday, September 28, 2024. Kris Kristofferson passed away at his home in Maui Hawaii. He Joins Johnny Cash and Wayland Jennings leaving only the great Willie Nelson to carry on the wonderful music talent we've all enjoyed throughout the years. These are great men with exceptional talent who live in our hearts and minds forever. RIP Kris, Johnny and Wayland and thanks for the memories!!
It's really amazing that so much talent and masterful songwriting, singing, and production can be combined into one 3-minute song, even if you were unaware that all four lead singers are legends in their own right, and already were by the mid-80s when this was released.
I have had cancer .And i told my wife that this is the song i want to be played , when I pass on . Lucky for me that was 7 years ago and I'm still around and around. 3:22
Johnny's line always gives me a chill.... "and when I reach the other side, I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can - perhaps I will become a Highwayman again. Or I may simply be a single drop of rain... but I will remain and I'll be back again". Damn.
I lost my dad in March. I so so hope he is still around. I miss him endlessly. He had a life long passion for Country. Dolly, George Willie, Johnny and Merle his favourites
Have listed to this song about 1,000 this past month and I can’t skip beginning middle or end, rarely do I like a song that much. When I here Cash’ part makes me want to hope on my motorcycle and just fly.
'...they buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound...' Waylon's voice truly captures the haunting depth of those words. Hands down my fav verse.
Da Wa Bruh I deadass read this as he said “they buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound” btw your opinion is so right Waylon’s voice soothes song like a baby
This verse may have been what attached me to this song for the rest of this life. I just love the visual, historical storytelling patched into a metaphysical shared lifecycle of reincarnation.
The Highwaymen, four of the greatest singers of all time. The very best of the best. We've lost them all except Willie. Keep the tunes coming Willie, we love you dearly. Johnny, Waylon & Kris are now playing & singing for a higher power. We love y'all & miss y'all. Thanks for all the great music & The movie "Stagecoach" an awesome movie & some awesome acting! 😔
@@vaughnl70 I grew up with Johnny Cash. Our household had a lot of different music. Johnny was right beside Dionne Warwick , the Supremes and Chet Atkins and Hank Snow were played right after Stevie Wonder et Al lol
I know it’s silly and I don’t know where it came from but when he gave that sly little grin I started crying. Not happy or sad, don’t know what emotion that was but it was not an emotion I’ve felt before. Of course I take music very literal and analyze every last note sung. Every little idiosyncrasies the performer may have when saying the words. I don’t know what I do without UA-cam and being able to go back and watch these old videos. Good for the soul to remember easier times.
This song was played at my Papa’s funeral. He was a trucker all his life, and often said the likes of Willie and Johnny made his long days driving that little bit easier. When he passed of cancer in 2017, I couldn’t listen this song. Now I come here to listen to this song when I need to feel closer to him. One of the best masterpieces ever written. “Or I may simply be a single drop of rain, but I will remain and I’ll be back again”.
Such a powerful message in one little sentence. I get it, it's part of our beliefs. Bit still, it's a majestic writing, on the part of the writer. (Can't remember who wrote it now, but it wasn't the Highwaymen). Not to take anything away from theor performance. Incredible. I get shivers each time I hear this, or watching it - I get memories,,emotional feelings about my late grandfather, rushing back.
I feel you brother. Some of the people I was closest too listening when this album came out,, are no longer here. Much like The Highway Men themselves.
My dad was in the Vietnam war. He was in the Navy; Later he became a truck driver and had me. I listened to this song when I was 3 or 4 inside his 18 wheeler.... I miss him so much... This song will always be in my heart.
Those last few seconds, when Johnny is singing "and again, and again..." an he gives that little smile of his before his face turns solid always makes me feel sad, but also happy. Sad because we will never get to see him again, but happy knowing he's up there flying his "star ship".
Couldn't agree more. My father listened to Johnny Cash all the time when I was growing up, and I've come to love his music myself. We had the immense honor of meeting Johnny and his beautiful wife when they did a concert in Colorado during my teen years. I'm grateful my mother was there to get a photo of us together. I cherish that photo and cherish having met him. He was truly a class act, a true gentleman, and so down to Earth. This song holds a special place in my heart... always will.

Just yesterday, at the ripe age of almost 50. I realized that this song being sung by some of the most outlaw of the country outlaws, is totally about the continuing existence of "ourselves". That the highway man, sailor, dam builder, and starship pilot are all the same entity. Although not knowing what it would be next, it knew it would be. The last verse is so powerful.
My dad was born in 78, i was born in 96 and we were drinking and sang this song word for word and I couldn't help but shed a tear. This song is beautiful.
My 87yr old stepdad who just passed loved this song. Tough as nails old man who was born on a farm in 1933 , never graduated high school , served in the military and got a college degree , became a police officer and then started his own business and was a successful man. Taught me honor and respect and keeping your word. He didn’t take any shit but he made sure Shriners kids were taken care of.
I find it coincidental that in both Nelson and Kristoferson's verses, they remark how they are "still alive/living still," but in Jennings' and Cash's verses, they talk about how they are "still around/remaining;" it is almost as if the composition itself forecasted their deaths - thankfully we still have Willie and Kris with us.
He will be back again, and again...My dad introduced me to this music, and I fell for it, even though we are germans. He now suffers from cancer. And soon he will fly a starship to the universe. But they will always be back again, will always be on our side.
Mine died in my arms at the age of 94 July 2nd 2024. He was the most intelligent and wisest man I knew. 2 days later I was napping on the couch at 10 am sleep deprived. He came to me in my dream the house was as it really is and he was only in his shorts like he used to be while reading in the living room. I remember it like it was so real I stammered “how you died” he hugged me and told me “it’s okay Keir everything’s okay” Then I woke up but I wasn’t surprised or astounded I just accepted that everything is okay and life is how it should be.
That smile of Johnny Cash at the end gave me absolute goosebumps! Wow, what a powerful smile he had! Sometimes words don’t need to be spoke, a simple smile is enough
Dedicated to my Daddy, one of the last true Highwaymen. They just don't make men like that anymore. I thank God for his knowledge, authenticity, memories, stories, and so much more being instilled in me as his flesh and blood. I love you Daddio. I'll always share the love of true Country music and listening to Vinyl. Pure Gold coming from the speakers of our Record Player. We lay his ashes to rest this Thursday April 15th 2021 in the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, overlooking the beautifully majestic Holston River in Knoxville.
This always makes me tear up. I live real close to Waylon's grave,in Mesa,AZ. I live in Phoenix, and once a month (usually, unless I cant get out there) I take the bus out to where he is buried, and lay 4 quarters on his grave, taking up the previous 4 quarters. It's a tradition. He did a song that had the lyric saying that he was "so broke he was 4 quarters short of a dollar." It's to make sure he is never broke
Shiloh, in the song "Danny Boy" the father sings to his son: And I shall hear though soft you tread above me, and all my grave shall warmer, sweeter be. I hope Waylon's grave is all the warmer and sweeter as a result of your thoughtfulness.
My mother-in-law is buried in the same cemetery and we always pay homage to beloved Waylon's grave, as well, when we visit her resting place. Blessings to you.
This song came out shortly after my father died with cancer. He told us that he would always be around. Those words in this song definitely touch my heart each time I hear it.
I lost my dad in 1976, when I was just 3 years old. I see the day that he died as time on the clock and think of him...and whenever I can see the moon in the blue sky on a bright sunny day! He liked to take pictures of the moon in the daytime.
Hello Brenda checkout hans wilhelm here on youtube its about spirituality our soul and is very uplifting. it gives you some strenght in difficult times.🤗
This is one of the most important songs in human history as it documents the labor and pain. The realization the understanding of the energy of the human being.
Four of the best to EVER do Country music... RIP Johnny & Waylon, you're still deeply loved & missed....... .......Be well, do well & God bless y'all 🙏🏼🇺🇸
My Grandfather was in the Air Force. He died 5 years ago, but he's still alive and with me. I'm just sad my kids never got to meet that incredible man.
Willie is the last Highwayman left. 😔 Godspeed, Kris! 😢 You will be dearly missed, but we know that in a way, that like your friends before you, you'll always be around. ❤🙏
It's definitely a great song but it actually has the opposite effect on me, when I usually hear this song I start to hunt players with bounties on their head. Just driving around at high speeds in my dukes of death, I don't like to use the Mark II because that would be too easy and I like to give the Bounty an opportunity to fight back
My husband passed away on the 4th of Oct 2021. And he is a highwayman. A gentle outlaw with a heart of gold with an unfinished task. He was too young to go at 43.
So sorry for your loss. 43 is way too young to go, I agree .. Hope you are doing OK My man died 8 years ago today. The pain eases at times and then can hit again as strong as the day he died.
Sorry for your loss and sumthin about the way u said a gentle outlaw gave me chills. Some people dont understand outlaws. Those who do and who are cant explain but sorry for your loss 😔
I'm an European who has never been to US but I will always remember when I first heard this song while driving a car: every damn word was awakening a deep, almost painful longing and nostalgia for an unknown place I've never been to. And when Johnny sang his lines I burst into uncontrollable tears which lasted for good 15 minutes. It hit me so damn hard. There's something special about this song. It points beyond words.
@@palmwineguy There's some pretty big overlap there, I would say, but folk music isn't necessarily in the same genre as country music. Bluegrass and gospel music, for instance, would both probably qualify as folk music, but not necessarily country music, even though they use a lot of the same instrumentation and technique.
I watch this video over and over. I always come back to it. I love how Cash smiles at the end. Yes sir, you indeed come back again and again every time I listen to your music. Legends never die.
This feels like a genuine thanks to the men that have worked the hardest to get where we are today, from man to man. Thank you and God bless my forefathers for giving me comfort that kings couldn't even enjoy.
My cousin also lost his battle with depression. His funeral was today and they played this song. If I remember right, this was the song he always said he wanted them to play on his funeral. Im sorry for your loss.
Wow, what a perfect video....I remember when the day it hit the radio in Wisconsin... as an instructor at Ft McCoy, it was played around the clock. It left us with a long thought... Thank you for the flash back to 1985
One of my best friends loved this song. He listened to it everyday. Last August he took his life do to depression. We played this song at his funeral. Not a dry eye in the building. He worked for the county highway for 40 years. During the winter we had to clean the roadways and he would always say a prayer over the radio for us. He ended the prayer Everytime with God always watches over the children and the highway men. Hearing this song brings him back to us. We miss you Jocko.
This song was my saving Grace on my first deployment and my introduction to Johnny Cash and county music in general. Because of this song I’m not either in jail and alive right now. I hope God blesses whoever is reading this.
When I first heard this I was like "Come on, where's Johnny"......... "I FLY A STARSHIP" "Ohhhhh, there he is". One of the most distinctive voices ever
My father passed in march of '85, a couple months after that I heard this masterpiece and ever since I find some solace in listening to it... it made me think that my dad isn't really gone, he's just on a new and different adventure and we may very well run into each other again some day.
This comment really touched me. My father passed in December 2022 and I strongly believe that we will cross paths again some day. I still feel his presence beside us when I walk in the countryside with my daughter
@@stevenbacon420 Absolutely. Paths will cross again, and you CAN feel people even when they are gone. Just a matter of time before you will be together again. Until then, enjoy!
Lost my dad 7/6/85 he suffered greatly from the effects of agent Orange and his time as a sniper& tunnel rat. Good God he's missed. My mom never dated she's 66 now has since buried her only son after finding him in his bedroom floor earlier this Year. Overdose.. smh such sadness. Must find a new way y'all we've obviously lost the war on drugs.
I was a highwayman Along the coach roads I did ride With sword and pistol by my side Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five But I am still alive I was a sailor I was born upon the tide And with the sea I did abide I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed But I am living still I was a dam builder Across the river deep and wide Where steel and water did collide A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound But I am still around I'll always be around and around and around and around and around I fly a starship Across the Universe divide And when I reach the other side I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can Perhaps I may become a highwayman again Or I may simply be a single drop of rain But I will remain And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again
This hits hard as we have now lost Kris . His Visage in the clouds is powerful now that he has passed away. In his own way Kris was badass, a rebel who definitely did it his way. Helluva songwriter Sing on, Kris with your fellow Highwaymen Our country poet ❤
Thanks to whomever hit the thumbs up! Amazing that others still love these dudes music! I know my son did… for tattooed across his back, he breathed & lived the “Country Boy”…but sadly, “the bastards hung him in 2022”…But “he’ll be back”! Ride on!
This song is one of the all time best songs to ever be produced … what a power house combo, there’s never been another match up as powerful in my opinion. Timeless.
the only one that came close, IMO, was the Traveling Wilburys. I loved them just as much, and it is bittersweet to listen to them and to these four, because we should have had lots more of their work as a group. Thank God we can access what they DID leave.
The last verse reminds me of my first husband. He was a fighter pilot in the Marines when we met. He died when we were only married 8 months. Til we meet again in heaven, my Dear.
From a longstanding devout Hard rock/metal fanatic, this song is a goddamned beautiful masterpiece in every sense of the word. If it doesn't move you, check your pulse. Shout out to the two fallen Highwaymen: the legendary Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. Original outlaws
I am nearly 50 years old and heard this song for the first time yesterday - I could not control the tears. Such a beautiful yet sad song from legendary men with legendary voices.
Your missing the point, it's about immortality and reincarnation so why would you be sad? 🤣🤣 We are all immortal spirits which is what the song is about!!
I think my younger brother took some comfort from this song before he died from cancer five months after being diagnosed aged 35 in 2002, I think of him often and especially when I hear songs like this..

It is, sounds like you and your father had a wonderful moment in time.
A unique and deep moment for sure.
Hell yeah man, That’s sounds like a good time to me. Having a drink with tha pops.
these moments we will cherish forever.
I promise you that is a memory you will have the rest of your life. Hang on to those!!!!

Rest in peace Kris Kristofferson. Legends never really die. You and your fellow highwaymen shall never be forgotten
That’s a really good point dude
Well now that is quite the connection. Hmmmm

He would’ve been 80 today.
But he is still alive.
And one day I’ll be riding by his side again.
I miss you Dad.
He is still alive.
❤❤ love for you
He will be back again, and again...My dad introduced me to this music, and I fell for it, even though we are germans.
I remember it like it was so real I stammered “how you died” he hugged me and told me “it’s okay Keir everything’s okay”
Then I woke up but I wasn’t surprised or astounded I just accepted that everything is okay and life is how it should be.
Same here my dad also would've been 80 on July 15th but past away in 2015 miss him very much
Thanks for everything, Kris!

@@palmwineguy There's some pretty big overlap there, I would say, but folk music isn't necessarily in the same genre as country music. I was a highwayman
Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five
But I am still alive
I was a sailor
I was born upon the tide
And with the sea I did abide
I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico
I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
But I am living still
I was a dam builder
Across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around
I'll always be around and around and around and around and around
I fly a starship
Across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again
