They're such simple laws, and if you still have doubts; Use your common sense! Outside of a targeted distraction, if the dog is obedient, focused and calm - it's probably a legitimate, trained service dog!

I used to work in customer service, and I made sure to memorize the 2 questions required by ADA for this exact reason. It's disgusting how people get emotional support animals and try to pass them off as working service animals. This channel has taught me so much about service dogs, thank you so much!

@@skipdar4396 ESAs are protected by the Fair Housing Act, meaning you can own an ESA without additional fees in an apartment without restriction, but hotels are considered temporary housing, and are not under the same allowance in a hotel as a Service Animal under the ADA. However, some hotels will allow an ESA in if they can show good behavior, and more places are allowing ESAs as well. I have an ESA too, but I put a LOT of research into whether or not the hotel will allow my ESA to stay with me.

To each their own. I saw it the other way around and also on both sides. Noone will retain any information the other is trying to provide if both individuals talk over each other. I know this because I too an guilty of doing this because it's how my brain is wired and I try everyday to try to listen and let the other person finish before I say what I want to say. Alot of times I forget if I don't say it right then and there but I've learned neither parties retain the information being provided when this happens.

My first service dog trained herself, it was another service dog/handler team that recognized what Dharma was doing. I them developed her instincts into skills by praising her.
My second service dog Mimi (recently retired, now a pet) was surrendered for destructiveness, aka boredom, she needed a job and was willing to learn. I first worked on basic obedience and then added commands I would need for mobility; the funny thing is dogs will learn from your reactions and mannerisms.
I recently started training on Fritz a year ago, he's doing really good. he's very ball/food motivated when learning.
Look up the access test, although it's not required, it's good to train as if you are required to pass it.

If you said to me "yes its trained for medical" (I'm talking, you know big emergency problems) the only thing I would ask is "if your dog does alert and you have a problem would you like me to call you a ambulance"
Thats all I'd like to know for your own safety and health.
Like if you pass out for 5 minutes, that's worrying for others but might be normal for you. But 10 minutes! If you tell me that will require a ambulance, I'll be straight on the phone. Basically all I'd be asking you is "hey is there any alert I should be aware of in case paramedics are needed?" I don't need to know your health records, they're yours and as far as I'm concerned private information.

I don't understand why owners, managers, etc. are not aware that there is no paperwork for service animals. There is 2 verbal questions and that is it. You can not deny someone due to their service (THAT's SERVICE NOT ESA) animal. Honestly there needs to be some sort of formal training for all business owners and managers put on by either the NDC, NSBA, or the Multi-National Corporations themselves to make sure they know the laws and are staying in compliance with the ADA on service animals. Most of these business owners aren't purposely trying to break the law they just aren't aware, and until an actual person of the law tells them they won't believe what another person says bc unfortunately most of society is untrusting due to the high amount of scammers out there. So while I understand this particular owners/managers initial dilemma that is still no excuse for not knowing the laws, and you should not only comp these guests for their stay, but also be mandated through ADA compliance training. I hope I've made clear through this that although I understand where the owner/manager is coming from that in no way shape or form do I agree or accept their actions and think justly appropriate punitive measures should be taken.

It’s fair enough to ask rhe question as a business owner or motel /accomodation owner. How many people take their mutt in claiming it’s a service dog. Anyone can claim anything. He has the right to find out rhe regulations. Everything worked out in the end, lessons learnt.

      @ServiceDogPaws  29 днів тому

@@tonyhanley9458 that’s the problem anyone can buy the fake certificate and registration.
Service dogs do not legally have anything to show. And business can’t legally ask for it.
If the dog is trained, you should know. Other than that ask two legal questions is it a service animal required for a disability and what task it’s trained to perform. If the animal is out of control or disruptive they can legally be removed.
Now. This service dog retired. My current service dog is graduated from a service dog program. We still do not have stuff to hand out. Because it’s illegal for them to require any paperwork. They can ask their questions allowed by law I stated earlier. And they can remove any dog that’s not trained a misbehaving.
They need to properly educated if they are going to be service dogs welcome and abide by the ADA to be disability accessible. There’s no excuse than pure laziness. Going to the ada.gov website give all the info. Not including the federal law cards I had that he was given

Explain about the situation how difficult & exhausting it was to be locked out of your hotel room for about an hour this is the exact problem you were trying to avoid by booking a room in advance for 2 adults & a service dog. This hotel could have called you via cellphone this could have been handled very quickly with no hotel lock out nessary. This was just a shitty way of pushing around disabled people. Send a letter to all involved + media & find a lawyer in you area that likes to go after businesses that violate ADA laws. Your good at raising awareness about service dogs. But these un-inform employees are getting way out of control staff needs to understand ADA laws if they deal directly with the public.
These owners & employees should stop arguing with patrons listen and understand that refusing to listening you are putting their customers are at risk of getting hurt by passing out & hitting your head. Just my experience,

Once again when you get upset or loud or swear at a person who is discriminating against you and your service dog it puts you in same company as the person who is doing the discriminating against you. You've got to kill those jerks with kindness . I realized that it is hard to do when you have a anxiety disorder but you make the situation worse when you don't remain calm when dealing with those jerks. As someone who has a medical alert service dog n a anxiety issue you can learn to be better. At 55 I am still learning. I live in Pennsylvania and I do have my dog ID'ed I know it's not necessary but in the long run it saves me a hassle. Considering I have been involved with the service dogs program since I was a little child due to my dad having a service dogs for the deaf, n my uncle being a service dog trainer. Please keep your cool, it takes practice . In Pennsylvania my dog has been tested. By a professional certified service dog program. But I did all of my dogs training , having learned how to growing up with a elite dog trainer as a family member.

Also, any testing/program u have contact with or "tested" ur dog, isn't really "certified" in the sense that the government has accredited them or certified them to test dogs to title them in some way...whether it be service dog title or just being a behaved dog... none of that is accredited, certified, or otherwise by the government in anyway.

Fun fact the dog doesn't have to be marked at all, when a dog is marked that is purely cause handler wants to. Most do for convienence for ourselves tho. All they can ask are two questions. Is that a service dog trained to preform task(s)/work to mitigate ur disability(ies)? And..What task(s)/work is it trained to preform to mitigate ur disability (ies)? After that they can't ask for anything more. You are correct in that the majority are trying to circumvent the no pets rules of the venue.
Yet some people who have a genuine need and are part of a service dog/handler team will buy those fake Ids and certificates because they get bamboozled into thinking it adds a layer of legitimacy and protection to their situation, it's sad that due to a lack of knowledge regarding our ADA rights and laws. and people on disability get scammed out of money they dearly need.
This is why we, as service dog/handler teams need to know our exact rights and responsibilities. (I know you do!!)

Perhaps it varies by state, to which it is important to follow varied laws when traveling. I work in hospitality and as a service dog handler I am well aware of ADA laws -- ESA are not covered by ADA laws as service animals in the state I live in.
Please also note that public safety takes precedence. If an untrained ESA(especially that is appointed as an ESA simply for being the person's pet) poses as a danger due to aggressive behavior or such to the public then it can very well be lawful to have it removed from the premises

@@naie5683 ... I lucked out with Lexi. I was having an anxiety episode when he was placed in my arms at 4 weeks (long story). He crawled up on my shoulder, started licking and purring. He stayed there till I calmed down. Since then he has been my shadow. Yes he is a normal cat, but knows when I need him. We don’t see him as a pet, but as a service cat - ESA. I read up on ADA to know what was legal concerning him and have followed the guidelines.
When I take him to my doctor appointments, he is well behaved. When I get home and take his ESA vest off, he goes back to being all cat. It was weird, the first time I put it o him, his behavior changed, like he knew he was working. His support came natural to him. I have not had to train him. I don’t believe it was luck. I believe God knew what I needed and brought Lexi to me at the time I needed him most. It’s been over two years now.
My next step will be a Service Dog. God willing.

I don't know what to say , if businesses aren't appropriately trained in the instance of someone having a service animal, and do not know the laws , then just have papers to prove it , so businesses will shut up, I think this makes your condition worse, by having to keep explaining, seems like it gets you worked up! States should start mandating , that all businesses be trained i guess, since some don't want to or cannot read the dogs sign, saying it's a service animal! Sorry you keep going through this hun!

There are no legally legitimate proof paperwork for public accommodation access like a hotel. It may shut them up to see something that looks legit, but isn't, but that is setting up the next team to fail after you. That is why the community is highly against those fake IDs/certificates/certifications/Registry/registrations, etc. And not using any form of paperwork to solve such issues.

Part of the problem is that there isn’t much regulation to identify true service animals. I personally think there should be federal certification and ID for service animals and I also personally don’t agree with owner training service animals unless the owner is a certified dog trainer. That being said, I also think insurance should have to pay for a service dog and it’s training. A service dog is no different than my wheelchair. They’re medical equipment. And insurance pays for at least part of the cost of a wheelchair. It should be the same for service animals

      .
This is late but I highly suggest doing better research. Try the ADA which is federal law service dogs and Esa are two different things.
      Th e ADA ststes:
Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Examples of such work or tasks include guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, reminding a person with mental illness to take prescribed medications, calming a person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during an anxiety attack, or performing other duties. Service animals are working animals, not pets. The work or task a dog has been trained to provide must be directly related to the person’s disability.
Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.
This definition does not affect or limit the broader definition of “assistance animal” under the Fair Housing Act or the broader definition of “service animal” under the Air Carrier Access Act.
Service Dogs go through hours to years of training topreform the tasks needed to aide their owners.
Emotional support are comfort companions nothing more they ate not task trained nor are they granted the same rights as service dogs per example. Seevice dogs have public access anywhere. Emotional support dog are only allowed at home abd pet free areas.
