Tim Burton's Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Grandma Georgina crochets all throughout the film. It's actually because of Grandma Georgina that I even know how to crochet.

There is a knitted or crocheted garment in EVERY episode of Never Have I Ever on Netflix. It is usually worn by the character Eleanore but sometimes the main character, Devi, has it on.

I was watching a Twilight reaction video (don't judge me, I used to love Twilight as a teenager) and Angela was wrapped in a granny-square blanket at the La Push beach. Made me happy.
3 finger gloves were made in the middle ages with nalbinding. The ones in the clip look knit. The 3 fingers were for more dexterity so they could be work while working or riding.

The blanket at the end of the bed in Virgin River is definitely filet crochet (I believe it’s pronounced fill-ay). And Red Heart super saver grandma- made afghans are the best!!
As a knitter and crocheter, I’m quite sure the mother’s three-fingered mitts in Little House are knit rather than crocheted. The cuffs could be a twisted ribbing or possibly a single colour brioche (I haven’t done brioche yet, so I’m no expert in that).
Now I have to get time stamps for the tv shows and movies that have awesome crochet works in them. I’ll do my best and comment again when I have the info. ❤

Check out the tea cozies in Call the Midwife,too. The midwives and nuns are always sitting around and having tea, when they're not delivering babies, and the teapots have beautiful, authentic period crochet "sweaters."
I've seen patterns from the show and they are all beautiful.
Regarding the hat keeping it’s shape, one method is starching-sometimes multiple times until the desired effect is achieved! If u have ever seen doilies that have a ripple effect like waves, where part of the doily is literally above the surface where it waves or coils, it’s been starched into that structure-there must b other methods-like wire but the starch method is the only one with which I am familiar.

The very first Waltons movie, Coming Home. In the first scene, Elizabeth, the youngest, has THE CUTEST crochet hat and scarf. I have asked several people if they could make a pattern from it, to no avail. There are numerous episodes of The Waltons TV series with crochet in it. One episode shows Grandma Walton trying to teach Mary Ellen how to crochet; another episode shows Erin crocheting Grandma a gift for her birthday.

I'm almost positive that Edith Bunker's chair ("All in the Family") had little white arm covers.
Not sure if they were doilies, or maybe just a crochet edging.

You talking about your grandma and her blankets - finding yarn and making do... I've decided to start recycling my "fit" that I either made or were WIP's and set aside... Cause there is so much yarn on those and as I got better at crochet - they are easier for me to take apart and re ball and re cycle...
Love to you and your kiddos, here is my off the top my head list of crochet in film. Charmed (OG 90's) all three wore crochet but Phoebe wears the most. Hunger games gas a surprising amount of crochet skills even used on hair and of course her cowl in Catching fire 1. In the first movie she trades for yarn when she is at the shop for the pin.
New out is the Munsters from RobZombie, Sherri Moon wears a stunning skull and webs shall. I need that pattern. On the Addams family Mortica is a advid knitter and all actress who play her learn or come into the role knowing how to. Angelica Houston does knit and crochet and she works it in as often as possible to her movies. Mists of Avalon so many yarn goodness in that film. The Lady of Shallot is the original fiber artists poem. :)
Downton abby Daisy has the most Crochet items but you can find plenty of fellow yarn lovers both up and down stairs. Starched Cotton will Stand up Stiff like the hat you featured in this video.
Gone with the wind, ahh the night when Scarlets second husband meets a tragic end. What a great use of the stitching circles as part of the plot.
You would be surprised how many times knitting or crochet ( mostly knitting) in horror movies. I would love to colab on that video seriously I could fill 3 just from horror. Personal favorite is Old Nana in first season of Game of Thrones telling Bran scary stories while knitting. hahaha I giggle every time.
Game of thrones has knitting , crochet, and sewing all through it. Arya's sword is Named Needle in rebellion to her sisters fiber skills.
Bones there is a episode on a plane to Japan where two knitters save the day. Even David Boreanz (sp?) is known to yarn it up from time to time from his Angel days.
As a some times extra on sets I have seen so many actors grabbing yarn and exchanging helpful tips with me. So I highly recommend bringing your yarn to set as it keeps people happy and the creative juices flowing on sometimes 20 hour days. On set of Epix show Graves I can assure you much crochet was going on in the background and Ernie Hudson adored all of us happy yarn workers keeping the set feeling like home.

Eons before I learned to crochet (Jan 2021), the first ever crocheted afghan that comes to mind on TV was the one on the back or the couch on the set of "Rosanne". Lately I've been binge watching some Netflix and noticed crocheted blankets on "Young Sheldon" (in fact Sheldon's mother crochets on the show in certain scenes, while his grandmother knits). I also noticed some blankets on "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina". When you mentioned the actor who appeared on "The Walking Dead" , I thought for sure you were going to refer to the episode where many blankets were used to cover up the children as they slept and used for room dividers. You can see them on Season 10, Ep 12

In the Better Davis movie "The Letter", she is either tatting or making lace with what looks like a tiny steel hook. (Does this count as crochet?) The more tense the drama, the larger her project gets. It's a great vintage film.
I'd have to go rewatch for timestamps but Pretty Little Liars Original Sin has so much crochet, especially the character Mouse wears at least a few pieces plus there are blankets and pillows I think. I was loving it!
In the most recent James Bond movie, a crochet amigurumi rabbit known as "Dou-Dou" features somewhat heavily. Many scenes, after the kid comes into the movie. I can't really say much without spoiling the movie, but Dou-Dou is in the ending and it made me cry a bit.
Crochet hats used to be done w #10 thread (like Aunt Lydia's) then heavily starched (boxed not spray).

Saw "Aunt Lydia", got Handmaid's Tale flashbacks. I know the Aunts got names of products that women used to use on purpose, but being Czech, I don't have any emotional reaction to that because our brand names would be different.
Also, in Practical Magic - Nicole's sweater could be both knit or crochets and there are crochet & tunisia stitches that can resemble knit.
It is fun spotting crochet in media. Immediately, I want to make what I spot. Wednesday Addams wears the cutest crochet and the patterns are starting to show up. I'll start noting crochet in media and let you know because it is so much fun.

Thank you for making me squint at the screen to try and figure out crochet stitches. I agree with your assessments of the LHOTP hats - uuugly. lol I notice crochet and knitting when I watch TV. I see the pieces on the backs of couches a lot or folded up for snuggling during cold weather. This was very entertaining. ❤

The show “Martin “ has a granny square blanket on the couch at Pam’s apartment and the show “heels” the main actress (singer)wears crochet poncho I think and you can find a few things throughout the show.
I'm just making a c2c blanket i was interested how many stitches I made. With my very rudimentary math skills, it's about 10000.

Look at the British crochet sites and mags, there is usually a tea cosy pattern in them. I've seen ones to die for but I don't have a tea pot!

Grandma crochets a lot, and there are at least two scenes with dialogue that mention her crocheting. John Boy talks about how much she loves it, and Grandma wants to teach Mary Ellen. In Terms of Endearment, there’s a granny square Afghan behind Shirley McLean when she’s calling her daughter long distance. 3. The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix. I was obsessed with her crocheted green hat. I still want to figure out how to make it.

This was a great change of pace video. I have noticed crochet projects in a couple shows myself. "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" on Netflix the episode is Kimmy vs the Reverend. Chris Parnell's character, "Junior" had on a crochet top, and I had to take a screen shot so I could try to recreate it, which I did. Also in episodes of Moesha where Niecy, played by Shar Jackson, had on some nice crochet tops. Season 5, episode 10 - the Thanksgiving show you can see the sweater after about the 10:15 mark. Season 5, episode 6 at 7:51, classroom, she has on a tank top. Season 5, episode 20 at the 6:50 mark she is wearing a pink poncho. I need a tutorial on all of these please and thank you. I have screen shots, but I can figure out the Thanksgiving poncho.

There is SO much crochet in Orange Is The New Black and it totally makes sense too, these ladies are in prison, theyve got PLENTY of time to crochet lol. It was so fun to watch that show after i started crocheting because i was able to point out 'hey thats crochet'

I recently watched the Mexican film ‘Like Water for Chocolate’, and the lead character crochets at around the 13 minute mark. I was watching it with English subtitles, which translated the VO to say knitting. But she’s definitely using a hook.

I think in the book it says that she knits but the prop people probably didn't know the difference.
As far as the hat in Northanger Abbey, I can only guess at the shaping. But I learned to crochet in the 60s from great aunts who had some of those old vintage early 20th century patterns. They would use heavy starch to shape hats. It was beyond my patience at that age to do the fiddly shaping but it was also used each time a ruffled doily was washed. I just let mine flop. But theirs were kept perfect and they still wore some of those fancy hats occassionally.

It might be starch or it might be lined with horsehair trim or buckram, both were used for stiffening.

I don't have time stamps (it's an awesome, must see movie anyway) but the afghan in "Seeking A Friend For the End of the World" is *amazing*!!! I can't seem to remember any others ... Everyone always knits in movies/shows.

As for the crochet in Northanger, it definitely looks like crochet on my tiny screen. Considering the openness of the pattern, that must have taken a huge amount of starching to keep its shape and/or the crochet may have been just a cover over something much stiffer. Not sure how historically correct the bonnet was, but it was a far cry more attractive than the 1970's version of 1870's crocheted hat. 😆

I don’t have a time stamp for this for obvious reasons… the movie No Time To Die (yes, James Bond!) has a crochet blanket in the opening scene in the house of the little girl and her mother before the bad guy comes and kills the mum.
I love this idea! I had a similar idea months ago that I never pursued, inspired by that blanket in Orange is the New Black, only I had wanted to try to make patterns of crochet I found in horror movies. I'll be looking forward to you covering that genre lol. I can't help but see crochet, even in animated films

There is an episode of New Girl with a Crochet Club. I am blanking on the episode but I know it is in season 1 and the guest star is Lizzy Caplan. I think it's Season 1 episode 11 "Jess and Julia" BUT I know for sure you can type in New Girl crochet scene on UA-cam and it will pop up. I love it because you see someone struggle with crocheting and then Jess makes her feel better about it. Saying she made something. It's sweet.
Also it is a cartoon but this year Bluey had crocheting in the episode Curry Quest. It is at the very beginning of the episode.

I haven't seen the movie in a long time and sorry, I don't have time to watch it to get a time stamp but there is a large square granny for an afghan in Independence Day that shows up at least twice. If I remember correctly, it is a peachy color and cream or white.

Filet crochet is pronounced as fill-ay crochet. It's pretty fun, but I'm just not fond of using crochet thread as most filet patterns call for.

Stranger Things and Midnight Mass on Netflix are full of crochet, too much for time stamps! Also, the epic afghan on Breaking Bad is shown throughout the series.
