The arc light has another advantage. It is rechargeable. When the duraflame runs out of fuel, you have to replace it, and we all know that matches are limited in number. But the arc light is electric, so you can just simply recharge it, assuming that it has the capability, and it will be good to go again!

if you have butane, you can refill lighters. If you have a solar or handcrank charger, you can recharge arc. If you buy water proof matches and keep them secure, then they might last a lifetime. YOu gotta wonder which will go bad faster under ideal conditions. Inert chemicals that need only friction, an electronic battery that could just leak for no reason ( i hve container of never used batteries that just corroded inside the packaging) or pressurized butane in a canister.

I just started using arc lighters, wouldnt go back, for camping, hiking, backpacking and you need a quick fire fast anything you put between the arcs instantly ignites, depending on how you use and there is a learning curve for proficiency but 100s of lights on one charge

the arc run time is probably a function to preserve the battery life. if they allow the lighter to keep draining it's power, it might overheat or worse. it's possible to make your own or hack one, but you would be going through batteries that either explode or don't hold their charge after a while. if the battery had a higher capacity and any flammable material away from the arc it would probably be able to run longer

Matches are the cheapest and most reliable fire starters of those tested. Only thing the arclighter is good for is if you're having lots of outdoors litting of candles in wind, like parties or alike. And these more modern fire starting techniques, like the dura, ordinary lighter, arclighter etc. have reliability problems which isn't what you want. They go broke, lighter can have gas but won't spark, arclighter aswell is both electrical, mechanical which means it'll stop working, malfunction etc.
There's a good gas lighter though, the old model Bic, if you can get it, that's reliable and durable like nothing else. Found one outdoors while chopping wood about a year back. I knew it wasn't mine and the colour was almost gone from lying in sun and rain for years. Tried it and boom, first attempt it lit and is still going strong.
Here's from a cold and wintery Sweden and 30 years of fire starting, just enjoying the warmth and fire beauty coming from the stove while writing this (lit btw with said lighter above).

Helpful thanks. I noticed you timed the trials but then did not take this into consideration in the final comparisons. I suggest putting the times into your boxes instead of the less precise check marks. The check mark system also seems a bit shaky with the plusses and what not. Seemed like the butane was just as good if not better in most of the tests. Better on cost? You didn't say how many lights the butane had? And I would say matches have pizzazz. They are definitely cooler than the other two. Cowboys used matches. They would never use an arc lighter.

I hope it turns out to be a long term alternative to matchboxes.
Edit- Also, for those match sticks, with time they deteriorate based on climatic conditions. So, out of 250, may be 50 would be wasted(atleast I did) so perhaps you cold also take this into consideration.

Arc light needs electricity. If your power is out and you need to light a candle but forgot to keep your arc lighter charged, it is useless.
I use an arc lighter myself but always have a bic full of butane for back up.
Chances are if your lighting candles, it’s because your hydro went out from a storm or downed line.
Plasma lighters are pretty sweet, but if you are depending on it for power outages… keep a beefy power bank charged with it. The batteries are pretty small in the lighters and the arc consumes a LOT of that power quite quickly. I have to charge mine every three days or so and I am not a heavy smoker.
And while they are quite effective in windy situations they will blow out with a puff or burst of air. So they are not completely wind proof.

  • @kneegrease
    @kneegrease 4 роки тому +1

If you put your finger in the arc of the plasma lighter and get shocked, and that makes it unsafe? I guess putting your finger in the match flame and the butane flame is safer? Note, touching flame or arc, equally unsafe!

It's called wether. If carbon footprint is so important to track, why do these sociopathic psychopaths who are front and center on this BS propaganda, constantly fly around the world in private jets, in which one flight across the ocean puts more into the air than the average human being does in their entire life. It's all about power , control and money. These people , Bill Mr. Eugenics himself gates, Soros, allie gore, Osama Obama, Dicraprio, and many other tyrannical devil worshippers, who always project whatever they are guilty of onto their political enemies. Everything they accuse President Trump and Conservatives of, well you can pretty much guarantee they are guilty if that.

Sometimes our stove top doesn't light so we keep an empty piezo lighter. It doesn't need fuel and the spark has lasted thousands of uses, also, I think it was from the Dollar Store. So... How does that stack up? I even opened it and removed the safety so it sparks very easy. You have to decide for yourself which one is best based on how you use it. The few times I needed to light candles I just lit the stove and used it to light the candles.

I like the fact that you can charge them, my wife will love a couple of these in our bug out bags. We do have multiple solar chargers, so that is a big plus. I love the arc lighters but honestly think they have a huge downside - if you don't use them frequently they basically stop working. So yeah - even in an emergency situation you may go to your kitchen drawer to grab that lighter and it won't work - either the battery can be dead or the contacts get corroded and don't work anymore. If the power is out or you don't have an immediate second option you're out of luck. Guess what - matches and lighter work almost perfectly in that situation even after years sitting in a drawer.

matches have pizazz, also shelf life on a electric light can be iffy. Depending on brand/battery used. I have had complete junk ones that fail quickly, charging port no longer works, or battery is just dead w/ no chance of living again. Not to mention the added concern they may blow up in damaged.
i.e. if going with an electric lighter, buy something reputable and not the cheapest one you can find. (store review scores do not mean much, read them and try to filter out the fake/bought reviews)

In the past I've used both butane lighters and matches to light propane grills in the past. The arc lighter is very similar to the igniters on most modern propane grills. Always be careful when lighting propane grills and make sure the top or lid/cover is up/open. We had a neighbor burn down their house because they tried to light their propane stove with the cover/lid down and all the gas inside exploded. I'm not recommending anything specific here since I can't know the condition or state of everyone's propane grill who reads this comment or watches this video.
