      id like to see a turbine version. i saw a cool jet turbine with empty core thats rotor ran on the outside cowling of engine & blade pitch was achieved by rotating one of the 2 rings they where fixed to forward or back. you could use the ionic wind to combust fuel air mix make a ionic scram jet :P

    I love boomerangs, they have a fascinating history as a primitive weapon and object that was even found on tutankamons tomb. You should try some with 3D printing or making molds to make some of exotic materials.

    You know how superconductors float on magnets when cool? How about creating a small kind of magnet track that has a floating Ionic Plasma Thruster? Seems like a cool idea to me. You can even decorate it like a car or a train. I think it will look pretty cool with the thrusters visible. (I don't have a 3D printer nor have I ever won a giveaway, so if this comment gets the most likes, it would be pretty cool.)

      Желаю вам выиграть, хоть ваша идея и очень не проста в реализации. На данном технологическом этапе суперпроводник требует очень низких температур. Хотя об этом уже писали.

      As for the impossibilities, maybe integza could get a superconductor cooled using liquid nitrogen and use it? Like, if you use liquid nitrogen, then it would stay cool for a long time no doubt.

    Was just watching a Program about a Plasma engine. It will revolutionize space travel time by a factor of 10. The engine uses gas that is energized to plasma by passing a radio wave antennae, achieving 5 million degrees. This plasma is concentrated by magnetic rings to a tight jet while exiting the rear of the rocket achieving 100,000 MPH speeds as opposed to the 10,000 mph of conventional propulsion technology.

    You should go down the corona discharge pipeline and try your hand at Kirlian photography. It looks similar to what you built here but instead of controlling the direction of the corona discharge to create thrust, the corona discharge covers the entire object with the same neon purple color. Combining this with the carbon spray paint and copper coating and you could have a very interesting photos!

      Do you know if is this high voltage module dangeours? It is 400 KV, so I assume you will get a shock, but if the input is 5A at 6V, the output current should be something like 0.3 uA.

    I use to build ion thrusters for spacecraft which works on a different principle but at the same time the concepts here are very interesting for air plasmas. Usually people use microwaves but this has potential as well as redundancy. If points get damaged there are still others. And you can stack rings to create a nozzle effect. It would be interesting to see what adding a ring cusp would do.

    It seems like one of the challenges of reducing the thrust to weight ratio is the fact that you can't miniaturize the capacitor that you are using. My gut reaction is that the tube/ring is undersized for the capacitor and needs to be scaled up to increase the thrust and maximize the overall thrust to weight ratio. Some experimentation may be required to determine the optimal assembly for your capacitor.
    One side idea that I had was what if you had a closed ring with these. Use the thrusters to continually accelerate the gas in the ring. Once up to speed, you would open the ring/divert the flow and allow the gas to flow out a nozzle. The benefit of this would be in situations like space where you need to conserve the accelerant/gas. The downside would be that the thrust would be in pulses. Overall, in space small, efficient bursts of thrust seem to be preferrable over a continuous inefficient flow.

      The real challenge is voltage conversion. There are a few possible solutions. First is to use a ganfet matched to an air gapped transformer with high turns ratio. You could play around with ferrite doping, but core saturation and hysterisis become a headache and I think the most reliable/consistent design will be one designed to go coreless that will fit into the light weight category. Still, the coil profile will become an issue to prevent arcing between windings or into the primary side. This can be done, but there are some differentials we need to consider. We can modulate power three ways. Duty cycle, current cutoff, and voltage. For all coils, for any given current in them, they contain a set amount of energy. By calculating the time constant, we can derive what a half wave looks like. That gives us energy over time for power - the duty cycle being the ratio of time available for energy handling vs the time used. We can modulate power, then, by effectively modulating the pulse repetition frequency.
      The other way to throttle the design is to switch off the fet at a set current that is below the minimum voltage drop. This would not likely be necessary, but may have its applications if a low prf proves problematic and creates sparks or otherwise results in unstable corona behavior at low power envelopes.
      The third way is supply voltage. As time constants relate to the properties of components, not the applied voltage/current values, the power available to the circuit goes up as a square of the maximum voltate it is allowed to be driven at, provided the components can tolerate it.
      Incorporating all of that into a design shouldn't be that hard and then programming it with a profile for the physical drive would allow it to potentially optimize performance according to various scenarios.
      A more novel design would be the use of a standing wave multiplier in a reflex klystron tube with a power microwave circulator (or even direct microwave plasma production) for rectification and re-amplification. This is a novel approach, but it was what I used about 15 years ago in a proposal for a similar project. You might be able to use the same concept with a network of circulators and "resonant cavities" (using wires and innate capacitance to emulate a cavity) to make a microwave reflection charge pump... which is like having a klystron with a different type of headache than those caused by klystrons. Lc networks are basically the same thing but at much lower frequencies. We need high frequency, here, to get the most out of small component values that fit our weight budget.

      Well, obviously, I would insist genius, but my adult IQ scores don't quite hit genius (though I suspect my IQ in gradeschool was over 140 - they brought in some people to give me special tests - so, either extremely smart or extremely dumb and subjected to an experiment where I was told I was pretty smart to see what happened - which I like to pretend is the case for comedy's sake at times).
      I have ambitions to one day create a range of videos on this and to build designs to demonstrate various principles. I'm not there, yet - I can't really focus on projects and hold a day job well, but am getting a business or two set up so I can manage my income/time ratio a bit better, and do some of those types of videos.
      I do appreciate that you don't just jump to turbo encabulator assumptions, though. We live in a society that has been so competitive that word salad is everywhere - both from a "I know things" standpoint and from corporate jargon that uses many words to say nothing when not trying to convince you that sodomy with a metal file is fun and enjoyable.
      If you want an example of one thing I was talking about - look up reflections in variable frequency drives. Because of the difficulty in matching impedance in practice, using VFDs in real world solutions, the higher frequency switching used to create the descrete steps of a sinusoid propagate and reflect off of the coil of the motor, creating return voltage spikes which can be higher than the source voltage. This is the same basic principle of a klystron except it uses resonant cavities along a traveling wave tube to enhance the effect. You can often emulate transmission line lengths by using cpacitors and inductors, so it may be possible to use transmission line with attached lc tank circuits to emulate a klystron at lower frequencies than what is practical for a klystron. At some point, annequlibrium is reached between power in, component loss, and transmission despite impedance mismatch. We are using the lack of impedance matching to build up enough voltage so that what goes through the mismatch equals power in.... with potentially unacceptable conversion loss - but it's possible it could be more efficient than a boost, buck-boost, flyback or similar converter as those are usually only 85% efficient at best, and at these conversion ratios tend to be in the 60% range. That would be a lot of resistive loss for a set of resonant lc networks, so it might be competitive.

      @MrFunkyPunkie Since water (at least salt or sea water) is conductive, the high voltages get shorted, there is however a related technology called MHD thrusters that does work under water for stealth drives. But its basis is not ions but electrolysis and magnetic fields

    I think quite an interesting model using this would be to attempt to hook the thrust rings in series, where you could potentially have a whole chain of thrusters powered off the one power source until the electricity lost it's ability to arc through the air. Maybe even with each ring getting larger. This might help to increase efficiency and thrust, and adequate testing would be cool to see along side various iterations of the series hoops. It may also look cool having multiple chained with multiple arcs. As for use of the thrusters I think attempting to make a glider would be a cool use!

    You should construct a Magnetoplasma thruster, which uses magnetism and plasma to create thrust (Plasma is the fourth state of matter, in which atoms lose their electrons, resulting in a high-energy, ionised gas). You can develop a highly efficient and possibly powerful propulsion system by controlling the plasma using magnetic fields.

    You could try to build a mini rollercoaster track for a small levitating train, using a type2 superconductor for the train and magnets for the rails.
    What would make it really cool is the fact that it could go on loops and upside down since a type2 superconductor actually locks it in place in the magnetic fields on the y-axis(height)
    The superconductor would need to be cooled periodically but it would still e be VERY cool and fun to build

    Make the emmiter out of a thin wire mesh. Bonus points if you can coat it with cvd diamond coating. Make the collector into a kind of reverse rocket nozzle with a spike in the middle. This way you maximise the surface area for a minimum of form drag. If you are seeing corona discharge , the electrodes are too close.

      No, it really doesn't seem very difficult. All you really need is to just gradually fill up the balloon until it floats with the payload attached then let the air out little by little until it becomes neutrally buoyant so it doesn't float away. After that you tie off the balloon and by the time that happens it will be a little less than neutrally buoyant so it's good to go (you probably don't want it lighter than air because bye bye blimp).

      Do you guys remember those swimming air sharks that were popular a few years ago? They were pretty easy to get neutral, just fill it so it rises then add a small amount of clay to weigh it back down. They had a weight that rolled forward or back to adjust the pitch, and you could “swim” up even if you were just under neutral.

    I believe the reason why the 3 thrusters were not going faster in the water is because the board they were on top of was now almost fully submerged which caused more drag when moving, hence slowing it down
    Basically the system needs to be much lighter to for it to work

    It would be interesting to see the effects of air pressure on the thrust of the ionic engine, ie. running in a vacuum or pressurized chamber.
    Also, it might be worth mentioning that ionic engines produce a bit of ozone, so a well ventilated area is a good idea.

    *You again!* I invented a plasma thruster more advanced than what's out there. It's based on the induction motor I invented which is the most efficient and advanced induction motor on Earth and capable of generating effects far beyond just motorizing machines. *My emitter-motor-amplifier has some incredibly complex operating modes and can be digitally controlled, or analogous, by the use of an H-bridge.*
    It can also simulate elements and elemental molecules meaning if you're running an electrochemical process to generate a particular material, my motor can simulate a gas of a particular temperature, flux structure, density and energy state. *SUPPOSEDLY, there are functioning systems relative to what I'm talking about and the claims are that you can insert chemical sources A and simulate chemical sources B with an emitter like mine and thus, you're then able to convert material A into what it normally produces when it actually is combined with material B, but by simulating it they're able to exclude it and still get the desired material.*
    What I invented is so very simple and yet so highly advanced and sophisticated I personally believe if we were to scavenge the documents seized by the government from Nikola Tesla's estate, *my motor would most certainly be in there.* The plasma thruster I've invented from it can be used to literally build a light saber granted slinging it around like a movie is a bit much. Relative to that though, I'm also certain it can be used to invent quantum batteries and sophisticated solid-state computers by orienting the formation of picoscale structures when grown or formed in a vacuum oven that M.I.R.M. is installed in proximity of to like a laser, insert precision field dynamics in subatomic particle mass simulation that causes the formation of said material to follow it's magnetic trail.
    It means nano materials and now, pico materials should be able to be manufactured by literally anyone and the cost of such a machine would be in the thousands of dollars, not millions or billions. *This year, I'm going to build a vacuum forge so I can crystalize materials together absent of gas and while discharging any gas emitted while M.I.R.M. runs a digital algorithm so that subatomic particle charge pattern causes the materials baking and crystalizing inside to form a highly specific lattice architecture.*

    I wonder if this design would be improved by the addition of the "vortex plasma" effect. Basically the back ring would be replaced by a donut shaped magnet with the plasma encircling the center like a plasma propeller. It would increase the weight a lot but for a boat style setup, like your test, it would be interesting to compare thrust difference, if any.

    Have you ever considered making the copper part a cone shape. One that would force the air to compress as it is pushed through. This might give you a higher velocity.

    That airflow looked a bit turbulent. I wonder if you could improve it even further by adding some spiral ridges or rifling on the inside of either the nickel tube or the copper tube (or both), so that the air twists around into a spiral as well as being blown through.

    What if you made thousands of smaller thrusters in a cluster all wired in parallel and you could even control the thrust vectoring electronically down to each individual minithruster cell. A giant honeycomb shaped cluster of cells might be able to accumulate larger forces.

      i would attempt to use 2 transformers for 3 thrusters, it would be just a little lighter, but the transformer also wont be doing as much work if there was only one of them running 3 thrusters

      A hovercraft needs so much more thrust and pressure. Ion thrusters have very low (specific) thrust. I mean you could put it on top of a hovercraft being floated by a fan, but then you may as well power the whole thing with a fan.

    Hello,
    I have an idea for a future video that builds upon this one, but with a few alterations. What if you were to construct a tube with two rows of vortex generators on the inside? The first set would feature spikes for the negative charge, while the second set would consist of positive charges. This might potentially reduce the airflow within the passage, but it would also decrease the wake area, enabling a more precisely directed outflow. Additionally, there could be a benefit in terms of reduced drag on the surface of the tube, as it should be the fastest. Furthermore, there would no longer be anything directly in front to impede the flow of air.
    You could potentially combine this with an inner tube to induce the inner non-ionised air to follow the outer, faster ionised air (similar to a Dyson "bladeless" fan).

    I was looking forward to you lining them up in sequence to see if you can get the air velocity to increase as it passes each ring. Might have to create some openings just ahead of each ring so that it can pull more air into the stream.

    For your next video try to make an acoustic or sonic thruster. There are videos of machines that use ultrasonic sound to levitate drops of water so maybe that principle could be applied to creating thrust?

      Есть технология - плазменные двигательные панели, расположены в виде круглых зон по периметру и на днище летательного аппарата, а плазменный импульс создают ячейки в виде микрорельсотронов. Если на рельсовые контакты подать электроток, индукция разгоняет искру замыкающую контакты до космических скоростей. Понятно, что импульс, создаваемый рельсотроном, можно использовать не только для выстрела, но и для движения. Поэтому достаточно давно на космических аппаратах устанавливают импульсные двигатели, которые в нужный момент выстреливают плазмой для перехода с одной орбиты на другую. Есть статья в журнале МАИ «Абляционный импульсный плазменный двигатель». Но такие двигатели крупные: струя плазмы возникает при сгорании пластиковой заглушки между электродами. А у двигательных плазменных панелей, где соединены вместе мини-разрядники ячеек (как у плазменных телевизоров), там рельсотроны уменьшены до размеров шариковой ручки, собраны в плоские панели, которые по конструкции напоминают плазменные панели телевизоров. Расстояние между контактами незначительно - до 1 мм - перемычкой между ними становится искра разряда. Работают ячейки синхронно: стреляют струйками плазмы - искрами электроразрядов, ускоренных силой индукции. Скорость большая, количество рельсотронов в панелях доходит до сотен тысяч - суммарный двигательный импульс в итоге огромен! Разряды идут с мегагерцевой частотой, каждый импульс ударяет о воздух, который завихряется в тороидальные кольца. Эти двигательные панели используются для летательных аппаратов в атмосфере: снизу и по движению создается импульсами плазменных панелей столб кольцевых вихрей - так и летает... В вихревой струе, за счет вращения воздуха, падает температура - влага из воздуха вымораживается снежинками, на которых искрится свет, созданный электроразрядами панели. Получается некий «твердый луч», который при покачивании аппарата изгибается за счет искривления траектории отлетающих вихревых колец. Впрочем, эта технология совсем не супер. Летают они быстро и маневренны - из-за легкости аппарата, но от импульсных плазменных двигателей - СВЧ излучение. Грузоподъемность низка. Радиосвязи нет. Узкая ниша применимости - редкие шпионские миссии. Сейчас вообще уже неактуальны. Потому и рассекречивают...

    Improvement ideas:
    1. Find out how those modules work and make one without the heavy epoxy . Beware that some internal wires need a thin plastic coat to avoid sparking . Alternatively just cut away some of the resin from a module but leave the part that protects the circuit .
    2. instead of 3DP plastic, try tissue paper . It's thin and lightweight . Or maybe only coat the outside of a dissolved 3DP support to make the plating sit on nothing at all .
    3. Use the less rare hydrogen for the balloon, remember the hindenburg disaster was probably the outside coating catching fire, not the gas .

    I can see a couple of improvements. Obviously the way you created the high voltage is easy, but like you pointed out heavy. Diy it and it will save weight.
    Second, you showed nicely how the air molecules just get smacked into the general direction you'd want for thrust, but a lot just also get smacked up or downward. More air guiding material is required. For the air on the outer side of the ion discharge youd need another tube guiding the molecules. The same on the inner side, but there you have to keep in mind the the only source is through the inner side of the pointy metal part from which the electrons shoot out. Both these would benefit from a lightweight air guide.
    And lastly, the air guides can be set up in such a way that you could make use of the venturi effect. Sucking in more air due to creating a negative air pressure since the air will be force into the air guides. This will increase the amount of air molecules being accelerated and therefore more thrust.

      in real zeppelins there is a small airfilled baloon inside the helium/hydrogen baloon.
      function: if air is blown into the little baloon it makes the Z. heavier, if air is released it becomes lighter.
      This way none of the buoyant gas is lost.

    Hey, great video. Take that design and using the same principle design of a jet engine, have smaller and smaller thrusters in an axial pattern, so each thruster speeds up the air flow of the last. The final one leading to a nozzle, I bet it will produce pretty high air flow

    That's pretty impressive effect from a home gamer design, neat. I wonder if you could augment the nozzle, maybe do some circuit trickery to make a higher potential at the exhaust vs the inlet, stretch and shrink it a bit accordingly for more net thrust. Man it's going to be fun when room temperature superconductors become a household item.

      @@paradiselost9946 since there is no resistance in the superconductor, I would expect electrons to pass more freely through the circuit, obviously the breakdown voltage of air remains the same. At the same time I'd expect the superconductors to not heat up from the flow of electricity, which should keep convection currents from reducing local air density or otherwise being a detriment to the ion wind. As to the Meissner effect that goes hand in hand with superconductivity, I'd be curious to see what can be done by playing with the magnetic field too since the plasma behavior can be affected.

      @@blackbeardthepirate7467 the resistance of the circuit itself is a tiny fraction of the overall performance. other than a few small losses to run the circuit, the majority of the work is done in that ionisation gap.
      just as the gap and potentials are limited by physical constraints, so are things like transformers... inductances.
      a superconductor may be able to flow a "current" with no losses, and produce a strong magnetic field... but that field is still limited by the saturation point of the core, and the superconductor itself.
      the inductance is still limited by physical dimensions.
      what happens is more like the superconductor in these magnets is just a closed loop on a core. you magnetise the core with a regular conductive winding. the "current" induced in that loop of superconductor, as evidenced ONLY BY ITS MAGNETIC FIELD, remains "perpetually"... or as long as we have had a test running for, at least. you cant chop into it to measure anything. cant pierce inside it to measure anything. cant probe its skin to measure anything... all you can do is basically throw iron filings at it and say "wee, we have an electromagnet, a solenoid, that uses absolutely no power..."
      do you know steinmetz? to maintain a magnetic field requires no power. only to CHANGE it. to maintain the current flow through the wire producing the magnetic field, on the other hand... that uses power and dumps it as heat. get rid of it, what do you have?
      powerful magnets for cheap... just gotta keep them cold.
      overdo the magnetic excitation, and the superconductor gets... non-super. ohms law dictates for zero resistance... an infinite potential with zero current... or infinite current at zero potential... or zero of everything... or nothing... whaaaaaa.? ohms law isnt always 100% applicable, though...
      to throw the original "superconductor" a ring of mercury, into a circuit... you still have the contact potentials of the rest of the circuit as it has to connect somewhere. at BOTH ends! you still get a differential between two materials. you still get a junction, with altered thermal and electrical characteristics. (i have no issue with that concept being used in some type of transistor thingy though... develop that, you may thank me for your nobel prize later ;))
      you cannot say, simply plug a super cooled rod of mercury or lead into a fuse socket and say it shows no resistance... they dont work like that.
      you definitely cannot do it with a solid ceramic material that has no useful physical properties besides the same ones shown by certain materials already... that are not superconductors.

      SpaceX use ionic propulsion on their StarLink satellites to position them, so it's definitely a practical means of thrust.

      @davidkelly4357 The thing is its practical in space since any movement stays constant since there is no natural resistance against a free floating object such as a satellite. On earth you have gravity, wind resistance and friction. All need to be taken in account to make it practical on a planet with an atmosphere and a strong gravity
