I downloaded Pop OS on my Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 laptop and I noticed that the battery life has become an actual seven hours, while it was two and a half hours on Windows 11, I am amazed at the result
I did the same on my IdeaPad gaming 3(running a dual boot). The one i have has 1650 and ryzen 5 5600H. BTW when you are on pop OS do you use the hybrid graphics mode or the integrated one for best battery life?
Love the review!! Been waiting for folks to take a look at this laptop since I've had my eye on it since System76 launched it. For me it almost sounds like a great value for the price. Just unsure if I'd be better off saving some money with a used Thinkpad T14 or T16. All comes down to how much money I'm willing to splurge
Thanks, but this review is really not thorough enough: 1. Battery life test. 2. Performance benchmarks (e.g. geek bench?) 3. Keyboard backlight colors supported? 4. Builtin speaker test/quality? 5. Up/down arrow key size too small? 6. Measure degree of "deck flex" on keyboard; requires pressing the keys with more force. 7. Demonstrate flexibility of outer case. Is it fingerprint prone? 8. Test dual mic/headphone jack, sometimes these have issues. 9. Monitor color reproduction quality? Demonstration of 144Hz mode? 10. Can the system76 keyboard configurator be used with this keyboard? 11. How smooth is the surface of the trackpad?
Thanks for this honest review! I belong to those who like numpads) But I don't really like the big bezels around this laptop's screen. They look a bit outdated. Though there are no other downsides for me.
Just out of curiosity, what's the advantage of such ratio? It's the first time I read about it and I'm a bit confused. Yes, I don't know much about screens, but I do know most content is produced at 16:9 (including UA-cam videos). My camera (professional) doesn't even have 16:10 as an option. So for these videos to fit the screen, you would have to either crop the image or add bands. I'm sure there must be advantages if people are looking for 16:10 on a monitor, I was just wondering what those advantages could be. Thanks!
@@aliskprado The extra real estate is always good, specially on productivity apps like LibreOffice and even DaVinci Resolve. Besides, is a better use of the space than the "chin" below the monitor.
I believe, no computer should come without at least one thunderbolt port at year 2023. It is a big miss for long term usage. Otherwise, it is a very nice computer and wonderful review !
Thanks for the review Jay! Was waiting for this one. If I was in the market, this would be near the top of my list. One thing that sticks out to me is the display size. IMO it would have been great had they gone with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Some people of course prefer 16:9, but that is becoming more and more a dated size. I also agree about the numpad never really liked them. Otherwise this thing looks great!
Personally, I like numpads. Every professional who has to type a lot of numbers prefers to have one. Lack of thunderbolt would be more serious, but I can live without it. What is the resolution of the web camera? 720p?
Do you know if we can install Arch instead of Pop!_OS on System76 machines? I live in France. Do you think that shipping fees will be too high? Thanks a lot for this review!
I might be mistaken, but doesn't the new Pangolin come with a USB 4 Type C port? If that is the case, then you should be able to use Thunderbolt 3 on it, as it's part of the USB 4 standard?
At least it isn't crippled with "windows," but system76 is never the thrifty option. If you don't need portability, meerkat is a lot more system for the price.
What I don't understand is, why does it have 2 fans when only 1 is working and another one is reserved for dgpu but pang12 uses igpu. Does it mean dgpu can be installed in the future?
Hey Jay i can notice that every time you upload a video, you often get only a few amount of views.. and i think that's because the majority of the subjects from your videos are about learning boring things, things that people usually need some patience to understand or like it.. and i'm not really talking about myself because, i like that kind of content, but for the average computer user that can be a little bit overwhelm and heavy to consume, so also i notice that more philosophical or popular subjects on your channel like "10 Things I Wish I Knew When I First Started With Linux" are really interesting to people, and this is just a little suggestion, but.. maybe if you can release a little more softly and less technical content from time to time, you can boost the amount of views you usually have, like The Linux Experiment Channel, he always upload interesting content, but that's because that content is not that technical or maybe difficult to understand.. you know.. just a little suggestion.. your an awesome person, i like your channel anyway
I have been using the pang11 model since onver an year. I wanted to trade-in this one to get the new on but sadly System76 doesn't have such programs. Any tips on where I can get a decent price for the old pang if I were to upgrade to new one.
nice rview I would say there are 3 things that are "wrong" with this laptop in 2023, which I believe is a general rule for every laptop in this age 1. the monitor resolution/size. It should be a 16:10 2. the bezels and the rest of the design feels like a laptop from 2007 3. Touchpad should be a default magnet glass one and not this dive style.
Personally typing on laptops to date drive me insane because the static electricity between keyboard & touchpad make right click menus popup all the time!
Jay is right. It's a grounding problem. Does that error occur in another building too? If yes, then the problem is in the charger. Or by a small chance in the motherboard. Either way, do the troubleshoot and fix the problem.
This is a modern computer. If it doesn't have USB 4 specs or thunderbolt, it should have at least 10 GB speeds. I would have gladly given up 16 of the 32 Gigs of ram. This computer was hyped and I was ready for it until I read the specs. That's why I passed. Just my opinion but I don't think System 76 specked it out, I think the manufacturer did. System 76 is working on building their own now.@@arisoda

Someone needs to do a test. I don't want to buy anything that's been scr3wed around so much its properitary and you can't put a different OS on it.
You can try installing ubuntu mate, it has been very kind to me and my 180$ laptop, making it fast enought to do anything on the daily with only 4GB of RAM and a Celeron processor, including playing minecraft with parsec thru my main rig off the wifi chip
I got burned by System76 selling me a piece of crap Galago Pro based on a Learn Linux video that recommended it and said the crap touchpad wasn't important. The only way it is even usable is if you disable the trackpad all together and carry around a mouse with your "portable." Never again will I buy a System76 laptop. And never again will I act on advice from this channel. If these people are capable of shipping such a defective device I want absolutely nothing to do with them. Their laptops are a fraud. You can do everything with a Lenovo chromebook that gives you a Linux terminal and it will cost you 1000 less. Their operating system is great and I love the Meerkat. Their laptops are crap. You would be well advised to turn your back on System76 and walk (don't run) away. If they keep pulling this kind of bullshit, they won't be around long. That will be a real loss.

In my humble opinion, anyone who pronounces Gnome properly deserves some love. Yours appreciatively, a British person.
I don't get why so many people dislike num pads. They're the best way to type in numbers.
Loved your comment on pulling $15 from your fast food budget to get the bigger drive.
Love the FFVI footage ❤ and the food budget commentary 😂
Glad you liked it!
The number pad is a major selling point to me.
When I got my current laptop I passed on several laptops becuase they didn't have the num-pad.
Fantastic review! I am in the market for one, and this may have sealed the deal for me.

If possible can you also take a look at thinkpad T14 AMD ? as considering around that price the T14 is also a very solid option tbh
I would love to! But that would require Lenovo to send one to me, and they've been completely unresponsive every time I've tried.🙁

I’ve never experienced that, unless the power cord wasn’t properly grounded. That’s not normal, definitely something else is wrong.

There's no need, Libre Office is included by default and has apps that take care of those use-cases.
