I'd like to add another point: you don't have to switch, but could use it along side some other OS. Have an old notebook collecting dust, because Windows got to heavy and bloated for it? Try Linux on it! Great way to play around and learn without much risk.

I honestly think that the Linux community exaggerates the state of gaming on Linux. It's true that there's still a ways to go, but Proton has made gaming better on Linux even since I switched in March 2022. I'm not saying you're wrong, Jay; just that the community in general undersells to newbies the state of gaming on this OS.

It's really only older games with anti-cheat. And in most cases, it _can_ work on Linux, but the developers explicitly blocked it from working on Linux.
The less I say about the incompetence of EA's "solution" even when on Windows, the better.

I think gaming on Linux has been great but it still isn’t in a spot for everyone. The most popular games you can’t even play them. I still have to fiddle with space marine 2 to work and with my controller. Gaming on Linux has come a long way but it still isn’t as easy as windows. Even if a lot of games run like garbage.

@cxz215 I have an AMD laptop and gaming is actually great.
Sure, there's the anti-cheat issue, but I don't play those games with disabled Linux anti-cheat, and almost every other game I tried worked with no problems.
It might be an Nvidia issue, and given Nvidia only recently started caring about Linux because of A.I., I would expect things to only get better.

Con: Limited software available on Linux. Like me, you'll most likely have to learn new software before making the switch. A lot of Linux software can be installed on a Windows machine, so you can take the time to learn it while still using Windows. I did. It made switching much smoother and easier.

Spot on as always Jay. Im in to my second year with linux as my daily driver. The only thing I would add is that linux is a journey, not a destination. At the start there’s a ton of strange stuff happening all the time, all at once on the computer, and it might be a bit frightening at first. But with an adventure's mindset, and the vast amount of documentation on the internet (Like the videos from “Learn Linux Tv”) you will learn to love computers. If not the computers, maybe you fall in love with the dedication and the ethics of FOSS developers, or how some organizations fight for important software licenses that secure future development in ICT, or that some Communities stand up for the implementations if features that track users and is a clear violation of privacy. There’s something for everyone. Even those who don’t want to be a nerd to use Linux 😉

You forgot to mention three major pros for Linux:
    - it doesn't push any shit on you without you knowing that. Like Windows with every small security update brings additional truck of bloatware you deleted last time
    - Linux doesn't collect telemetry on you, doesn't keylog, doesn't mine your data, doesn't mine crypto-shit-coins in favor for some big corporation. Because no one knows what all these hundreds of windows processes are doing, when they are eating CPU cycles and memory. Beauty of Linux as an open source - you can get all the information about what each piece of software is doing on your machine and if you don't like it - turn it off
    - last thing. Linux is very lean to your resources. It's lightweight by default, and if you ever want to, you can even slim it down more. It doesn't eat 3-4 Gb upon startup just because it's there, like Windows. It doesn't need 20 Gb just to be installed

I use Linux to RDP into a Windows computer at work two days at a week (for remote working), and it works great. The application that you need to install in Linux is called Remmina. It uses the Remote Desktop protocol, so you don't need to install anything on the Windows computer, just enable RDP. It works very well. It uses a "system tray" icon, so make sure that you have support for that installed, because it seems that gnome made the poor decision of not having support for it by default, but it has add-ons to bring that functionality back. Or at least that was the last time that i tried it, years ago. I normally use XFCE desktop, where tray icons are fully supported.

@17:14 While Linux isn't perfect and some people put it on a pedestal, some people get really frustrated easily and greatly disparage the OS and publicly and loudly shout about their dislike with the OS without some work into the problems they are having. Some people feel it should be instantly usable without any issues and still do what they were doing exactly as it was with what ever they were using before and that can't ever be the case. To me it could be like driving cars. All cars have a basic function, acceleration, deceleration, windows, lights, but the controls to some features are going to be different from one make to another and because they can't access or control their stereo the exact same way as their previous car they are going to tell everyone the car sucks...

The point is that with all OSes some things have to work. With MacOS and Windows, despite their flaws and problems the user experience is a lot better overall. There is no surprise that these have bigger market share than desktop Linux. Servers are a different story and Linux shines there. The reality is that most people aren’t looking for a good server operating system or rock solid stability which usually comes with the tradeoff that some things are not supported. Linux was for a long time infamous for hardware incompatibility issues and in my 20 year use of Linux I’ve never found that it measures up to windows or macOS from an average user perspective for the desktop. I’ve always had to tweak, change, configure and so on. On top of the things I’ve to do at work I also have to keep massaging Linux constantly and that is a problem for me. I’ve switched to macOS for work and have never felt better. Most things just work for my workflow and I don’t have to keep dicking around with the configuration of my os all the time.

Thanks for making and posting this vid. I found it most interesting.
You're right about expectations. I'm in the position that my three PCs all run Windows 10. Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, told me that Windows 10 would reach End Of Life in 2025 - but I couldn't have Windows 11 either (not that I wanted it). It so happens that I am a hobbyist composer; and the one application I cannot do without is Spitfire Audio BBCSO Core. This is Windows or Mac only. I wouldn't even dream of trying to run this under Wine or on a VM - it is a real Resource Hog. Sure, there are DAWs for Linux, but I would not be able to use BBCSO Core, so there goes my orchestra. However, the PC that I use for music production already spends 99% of its time offline. I'm just going to keep that machine on Windows 10 offline, and I can still get to use BBCSO Core. Going to 100% offline will not be a big deal.
For my other two PCs, including my Daily Driver, they are definitely moving to Linux. I'm currently trying out distros, booting off USB drives. One problem I have run into is that my printer won't work. It keeps telling me (probably correctly) that it can find no driver for it. That might be because I haven't actually installed Linux yet, I don't know. If I can't get it to work even when I have installed Linux, a possible solution would be to attach it to the offline Windows 10 machine. It wouldn't be as convenient, but it would at least work. If anyone has any advice for me on that, I'd be most grateful.

(I told them that with their attitude, I would replace it with a Brother --- but still have it.) Meanwhile, I upgraded to 24.04 (after numerous attempts ---- 24.04 is buggy still). Neither CUPS or HPLIP worked (ok, printer worked, scanner did NOT) on Gnome - Wayland; but I loaded Unity and it works use-ably under CUPS ( I haven't bothered uploading HPLIP cuz I don't want to ruin what does work.) Windows didn't really doesn't need to have a lot of drivers built into it, since Windows controls market share, drivers either comes with, or can be downloaded, for any peripheral. Like you said, Linux is an afterthought. Printers, for example. HP printers play very nicely with Linux, others like Richo, not so much. I've always had the idea of a basic driver being hard coded in the device, itself and since the connection is bidirectional, you hook up the device, it detects the OS, and installs a "driver", to make it functional. That would take the burden off the kernal/OS, and maybe leaner. But, learning about Linux, dependencies can be an issue.

Great video. I suspect you are correct in the the Linux community is the biggest problem. There are many very helpful people in it but at the same time there are a lot of the intolerant RTFM type. They figure that since they had to figure something out everyone else should.
I think that the second, and possibly could be the biggest, is the number of distributions and customization possible. Most people tend to be creatures of habit. They don't like change. You sit down to two different windows or mac computers and what you see is basically the same thing. You know where things are. One the other hand there is a huge difference between a Linux machine running Cinnamon desktop and Ubuntu. Even the names of equivalent apps can be completely different. Back in the days of DOS and Win3.x there were an awful lot of secretaries that resisted going from Word Perfect 5.1 to the windows version because it was so different.
And you are completely correct that sometimes you just can't abandon Windows entirely. I keep a Windows box available just so I can connect the Boss sound studio to my guitar amp.

In fact, installing and using Linux for common tasks is quite easy nowadays, and a lot of hardware is supported, but some stuff won't work, including some very popular hardware. That's the consequence of the small amount of users that the Linux desktop has. Because of that, hardware and software makers aren't interested on investing resources in Linux compatibility (or just publishing technical documents for others to implement the drivers, in the case of the hardware).
Like most things, the first one to make a successful product wins most of the market, and that was Windows. Mac avoided the issue by only running on their own hardware (and didn't miss the opportunity for vendor-locking their users). Linux can't build their own systems, but there are some bussiness that sell Linux systems, like system76, choosing supported hardware.
As some linux distributions are able to run from a USB drive (Ubuntu, for example), it's not hard to check if the hardware is supported.
Of course, it's hard for it to be easier than getting a Windows or Mac laptop with the OS preinstalled. It's like buying a computer like it was a toaster, ready to use. Now, when your Windows computer "burns" most of your resources to spy on you, or takes forever to install updates, that's not nice either. So it's a choice that everyone should consider.

The only thing I would argue is gaming. Thanks to Valve and their Proton compatibility layer, almost every game on Steam is one-click install. The only games that will not run are those with kernel level anti-cheat and that isn't Valve's problem. And it's not just NVIDIAs nowadays, AMD GPUs have also issues. Who cares about Internet, graphics, or CUDAs nowadays?

      2nd I have AMD Ryzen 7
Is it worth it to change my windows to Linux?
3rd how easy is to get hacked? I don't want my steam and gog accounts to get hacked.
I genuinely want to change my windows to Linux due to bloat ware and Microsoft become more and more invasive while losing the protection of our data and info

    • @sunbro9744
      @sunbro9744 2 місяці тому

@@Aki-kh2qe-StreetKidZZZ 1.Yes, it's true that games are developed with Windows in mind and don't natively support Linux. However, things have improved **a lot** in recent years, thanks to tools like Proton (part of Steam Play), Lutris, and Wine. These tools allow you to run many Windows games on Linux, often with little to no issues. Single-player games usually work well (Steam makes it really easy), but it can vary depending on the title and how old it is.
I'd recommend checking out ProtonDB to see how well your games run on Linux. Some games might still have issues but thanks to some commands, you can launch games quickly.
If you use Lutris, the install scripts from lutris' site help to install old games with overhaul mods (I could play Silent Hill 2 Enhanced Edition thx to those).
      2. AMD has good Linux support. In fact, the open-source drivers for AMD graphics cards have also gotten much better, and performance is comparable to Windows in many cases. If you're using an AMD GPU, you'll likely have an easier time with Linux than someone with an NVIDIA card. You still have to be careful about package dependencies but they are easily available on Lutris' github page.
If you're tired of Windows' bloatware and data-collection practices and not locked down by specific software you can make the jump. I'll advise to get yourself accustomed to Linux via a virtual machine or a dual-boot beforehand.
      3. Security-wise, Linux is generally considered more secure than Windows, but that doesn't mean you can’t get hacked. It’s about good practices:
      - Keep your system updated.
      - Avoid downloading software from untrusted sources.
      - Use strong, unique passwords (use a password manager like keepassxc and make passwords with commas in them).
      - Get used to not highlight a text fully when you copy-paste (Leave the 1st and 2 last characters out for example).
      - Learn how to use UFW or Firewalld
      4. If you're up for it, take some time to learn basic terminal usage. Eventually, you'll find yourself needing to use it, and while it might seem daunting at first, mastering a few commands can be incredibly rewarding. There are countless tips and tricks available, and even writing a few simple scripts can save you tons of time. In my case, I was able to organize efficiently years' worth of family photos and videos with just a few scripts, turning what would have been weeks of work into a weekend project.
BugsWriter on YT was an inspiration for some terminal pratical use.
I'd recommend testing out Linux Mint or Ubuntu first, so you can try things out before fully switching.

The lack of support from software and hardware makers are the consequence of the small amount of users that the Linux desktop have when compared to Windows. But the good news, is that the support will come if the number of users increases. I recommend to everyone that is sick of Windows wasting most system resources on spying you (the so called "telemetry"), or waiting what it feels like hours for updates to finish installing, to try Linux. Maybe you can't switch 100% of the time to Linux yet, because some of your hardware or software isn't supported (and you don't find any open software alternative that works for you), but you will be surprised of how efficient is Linux on resource use when compared to Windows. Lots of tasks can not only be done in Linux, but they can also be done faster. You can start by trying it with a "live distribution" that runs from an USB drive, or even a virtual machine (but obviously won't run as fast as on "bare metal" in this case). Or maybe you have a 2nd computer, and you want to try Linux there? Dual booting is also an option, but it can have it's complications.
Windows benefited from been the first user-friendly GUI OS, so it took the market, and users tend to keep using what they're used to. But i think that Windows deteriorated over time, and corporate greed took in, and is looking more and more "distopic", while the Linux desktop had made lots of improvements, and is ready to be used for any kind of users. Nowadays installing Linux and using it for common tasks like internet browsing is very easy, and efficient. So, why not to dedicate some of your time to try Linux? It will benefit you with a faster, efficient system that won't be spying on you, and all of that for free!!

Back when I started with Linux (Early 2000s) this was very much the case, but thinking back over the last 5 years I can't think of a single Wifi or GPU component which hasnt been supported by OSS / kernel drivers or, in the case of Nvidia, vendor drivers.

depends on how new the laptop is.
Old laptops should generally work fine, new ones generally don't. That's due to hardware driver issues, new hardware, have new drivers, that haven't been integrated into the linux kernel yet, hence the issues.
I guess some laptops might have unique hardware, causing the drivers to be niche, and thereby escaping Linux driver integration for longer, or perhaps even indefinitely... But again, the older the laptop is, the higher the chance it works with linux.

I used to wish Linux would become as popular as Windows is now. However, in recent times, I've worried that such could one day actually become a reality (I'd settle for being slightly inferior to Windows in terms of popularity... that said...). Recent events (don't think too hard about this, I'm mostly referring to stuff within the realm of my personal hobbies not necessarily something more all-encompassing) have shown that the vast majority of people just prefer things that work, are (somewhat) boringly monotonous, and/or prefer chasing trends at the expense of freedoms and options. And, to be fair, understandably so: not many people care to take that time when such involves taking up a lot of the (already dwindling) number of free hours we have available (especially given that computers are soo utilized in the modern day and learning a new operating system is not a trivial endeavor). As such, the Linux world's strength, despite its minuscule size, is actually very special. It would be quite saddening to see it become like Windows because soo many people who just don't care about what makes Linux special (just that they're escaping Windows) come over and dominate/chain the Linux world with apathy and/or drunkedness for the newest, flashiest things that led them here to begin with. And just to be clear: I'm not saying that I'm free of such apathy and deunkedness (ESPECIALLY in other areas of my life); I'm just saying that (even with the little time I've been apart of this space) it'd be a shame to see it corrupted at the expense of becoming more popular (all with the hope of, perhaps, being granted the seemingly all-important blessing of Adobe, Activision, and the like). I think I'm quite content with Linux not being in 1st place as well.

As a user standpoint linux give you control but do you need it to be bothered and work against you and be in the way when require you to take control instead to be able to do stuff that operating system supposed to do. Its like being a fidget spinner with benefits. You need an obscene amount of work to linux just work for you and not you work for it instead compered to windows. Too many things not work out of the box like windows does after installing drivers and pre prerequisite software. No surprise for the low percentage userbase on desktop, people prefer to do stuff that they want instead of building configure everything to be able to do stuff sometime you cant even configure stuff even if you stand on your head and tear out all of you hear because what you want to do is not "supported" (hacked to work). You always have to duct tape things instead use proper factory stuff. Very few people proud of that, good for them. You can disagree with me but the numbers do not lie, with that insane gap between the two, you would be in to wrong to do so. In an industry standpoint If you want a server with server applications, Linux 100%, except workstation management in an enterprise where windows is still the winner with AD, intune, SCCM etc. you cant find anything close on linux that can handle windows workstations also. The great thing about Linux is you get to be in control. The worst thing about Linux is you have to be in control on anything even those you do not want and you do not need to be. Not supported hardware or software, at the end of the day no matter the reason its always the user who have to deal with the end result. Its good to beat the drums but eventually people on average falls flat when they try linux as a desktop because its not meet the expectations they had from their previous OS. The linux distro creators, good folks, they need to change their mentality and band together and create clear walls how things should work by default and work on THAT ONE linux desktop experience and not expect that every guest will have to change their mentality for each band of flavor. The fragmentation and entitlement and the very same thing in the software that have been praised by the linux community is what that tears it apart and make it unappealing to users and developers. Probably the underlying problem that linux not meant to be a desktop and mentality have been carried from linux (server) to linux (desktop) instead of making the mentality from windows (desktop) to linux (desktop). The way the branching is what makes it wrong. If your take-away from this that linux should take away the control, then you missed the point and you are part of the problem why linux is falling to capture most of the market especially with as bad opponent as microsoft is with windows and apple with macos. Linux desktop needs to be became an entity instead of being a nomads separated scattered, weak and unappealing. They need a strong leader that pull them together if they want it or not and make them a strong functioning nation to be able to take over anything or even something.

Many vendors, especially the cheap chinesium parts, which are popular because they are cheap, frequently fail to support standards at the hardware level (firmware). Though they frequently self report that they are compatible. They then work around this by modifying their drivers on Windows. Things appear good on Windows even though its broken hardware. The driver does the right thing by working around the hardware bug and this makes users believe it's quality hardware.
On Linux, they support the standards wherever possible and if the hardware reports it communicates via a standard or defacto interface, it attempts to do so. Without driver exceptions this, of course, creates incompatibilities. When this is pointed out, for whatever reason, users complain this means Linux users are snobby; because the correct answer is it's usually bad/cheap hardware.
The issue is almost never Linux but poor quality hardware or hardware specifically created to create lock in with Windows. Remember, M still pays companies to not support Linux.

The main problem is with multiplayer games, and namely competitive games that rely on anti-cheat that isn't supported on Linux, though even that should improve with time. You can dual boot or use a spare computer for those, if you really want to play those games and you'll be good to go.

Linux isn’t a silver bullet, but it is great if you know what you’re doing. Of course, it’s not for everyone, and that’s totally fine.

I have seen some pretty toxic forums, but there are some good ones that actually have members that try to be polite and help newer users. (I can't say new users because those distros aren't beginner focused, but they do exist.)

I’m going back in to IT to support Linux. For the casual user, Linux is good. Especially Mint. Printers are still an issue with Linux, though. In Mint I was able to connect to Windows shares easy enough, so that’s good. i.e. file sharing is good.
Once again: The casual user and small to medium businesses (SMEs) should go Mint. Ubuntu Server is wonderful.
I delve back in to domains again this week: L2WD & W2LD. I did L2WD twice. Not very hard. So an SME needing a centralized file server using a WD, should be good to go.

The only problem with Mint I currently have is their ridiculous behavior with Flatpaks that aren't verified. It feels against the grain for such an otherwise good distro...

Jay, for people who are security conscious and do not want to be spied on, the Linux kernel is the only choice....
Which distro that person chooses to use, that is up to them, in Linux, if there is an application running that looks suspicious to you, you can kill it.... (Within reason)
In windoze not so much, chances are, you are taking your whole system down because of how tied in that "process" may be.
Not only that, but, recall will now be actively running inside of windoze explorer as well....
So, not only are you going to be watched on the desktop but your files are going to be snooped around in as well... I got out 3 months ago, there are some applications that I just had to let go, for others there were alternatives and I even got some software on linux for free use, that I would otherwise have had to have paid for under windoze...
Linux is not perfect, and, there is a learning curve, but, it beats the hell out of a draining and taxing OS that is quite frankly nothing but an overpriced software bully that is continually spying on you.....

I do some games because I like to script and otherwise Mod them. So, it's good practice but in moderation. I do that all on Linux, even with some games that were developed for Windows. It depends on weather strictly forbidden proprietary libraries/software were used in the development or not.

Yes, games can use too much of our time if we aren't careful. I don't think that they are a waste of time but they are addictive and can use too much of it.

No real cons for the average user. As long as the system is compatible and peripheral devices work, you can watch media, browse, shop, do banking, mails, write essays etc. and play 1000s of games through Steam. Let's hope the recent MS BS pushes more people in this direction. Dual boot is the way to play. The thing is, in my view, throwing a fit over a specific "game" not working is childish, when there are 1000s of other options. The ProtonDB database of working games is vast and expanding. Considering that Windows is now a breach of privacy, this is such a small sacrifice to make.
